Pondicherry Travel Guide 2024: Best Places to Visit & Things To Do
Welcome to your ultimate Pondicherry travel guide for 2024! This guide is designed to help you explore the best places to visit and things to do in this charming coastal town. Whether you’re planning your first trip or returning for another visit, Pondicherry offers a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. Let’s dive in!
Tumblr media
History of Pondicherry
Pondicherry, often referred to as “Puducherry” or simply “Pondy,” boasts a rich history that dates back to ancient times. The town has been influenced by various cultures over the centuries, from the Romans and Greeks to the Cholas and Vijayanagara Empire. However, the most significant period in Pondicherry’s history began with the arrival of the French in the late 17th century.
In 1674, the French East India Company established a trading post in Pondicherry, which eventually grew into a thriving colonial settlement. The French influence is still evident today in the town’s architecture, cuisine, and overall ambiance. Walking through the streets of the French Quarter, also known as White Town, feels like stepping back in time to a French colonial era. The grid-patterned streets, colonial buildings, and vibrant bougainvillea-covered walls add to the town’s charm.
Pondicherry remained under French control until 1954, when it was formally transferred to the Republic of India. Despite this change, the town has retained its unique blend of French and Indian cultures, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts.

Kyrgyzstan for MBBS - A Great Option
Tumblr media
Beyond affordability, Kyrgyzstan boasts universities like Kyrgyz State Medical Academy, Osh State University, and Jalal-Abad State University, renowned for their quality education and modern facilities. These institutions equip students with exceptional training through a comprehensive curriculum and cutting-edge resources, preparing them for successful medical careers.
For many students with dreams of a career in medicine, the path to becoming a doctor can be challenging. Competitive entrance exams, high tuition fees, and limited seats in medical colleges can pose significant hurdles. This is where studying MBBS abroad emerges as a compelling option, and Kyrgyzstan stands out as a particularly attractive destination for several reasons.
Affordability and Quality Education:
One of the most significant advantages of pursuing MBBS in Kyrgyzstan is the affordability factor. Compared to Western countries or even some Asian nations, the cost of medical education in Kyrgyzstan is considerably lower. The total program fees, including tuition, hostel accommodation, and living expenses, typically range from INR 20 to 32 lakhs (approximately USD 25,000 to USD 40,000) for the entire duration of the course. This makes it a realistic option for students from middle-income backgrounds who might not be able to afford exorbitant medical education costs elsewhere.
However, affordability shouldn't be misconstrued with a compromise in quality. Kyrgyzstan boasts several universities recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India, ensuring the medical qualifications obtained are valid for practicing medicine back home. These universities follow international education standards and employ qualified faculty to deliver a comprehensive MBBS curriculum. The medium of instruction is primarily English, eliminating the need to learn a new language for international students.
Simplified Admission Process:
Another attractive feature of MBBS in Kyrgyzstan is the streamlined admission process. Unlike the highly competitive entrance exams required in India or other countries, admission to medical universities in Kyrgyzstan is generally based on a student's academic qualifications (usually class 12th marks in the science stream) and eligibility criteria. This reduces the pressure of intense test preparation and allows students with strong academic backgrounds to secure admission more readily. Additionally, many universities offer hassle-free visa application processes, further simplifying the journey for international students.
International Exposure and Modern Facilities:
Studying MBBS in Kyrgyzstan provides valuable exposure to a diverse international student community. Sharing experiences and learning from peers from different backgrounds enriches the educational experience. Universities in Kyrgyzstan are well-equipped with modern infrastructure, including laboratories, libraries, and hospitals, ensuring students have access to the latest technology and resources for a well-rounded medical education.
Focus on Practical Training:
Medical universities in Kyrgyzstan place a strong emphasis on practical training alongside theoretical knowledge. Students have opportunities to participate in clinical rotations and gain valuable hands-on experience in hospitals during their later years of study. This practical exposure prepares them better for the realities of the medical field and equips them with the necessary skills to excel in their careers.
Safety and Cultural Experience:
Kyrgyzstan is a relatively safe country with a friendly and welcoming populace. The cost of living is generally affordable, providing a comfortable standard of living for international students. The country boasts a rich cultural heritage with stunning natural landscapes, offering a unique experience beyond academics. Students can explore the beautiful mountains, serene lakes, and vibrant cities, broadening their horizons and enriching their time abroad.
Things to Consider:
Before embarking on this journey, it's essential to consider some factors. While the MBBS degree is recognized by the NMC, students need to pass the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) upon returning to India to practice medicine. Additionally, adapting to a new culture and environment can require some initial adjustment. Thorough research on the chosen university, accommodation options, and local customs can ensure a smooth transition.
Conclusion:
For aspiring doctors seeking an affordable, high-quality MBBS education abroad, Kyrgyzstan presents a compelling option. With its combination of affordability, well-recognized universities, a simplified admission process, and valuable practical training, Kyrgyzstan offers a stepping stone to a successful medical career. The international exposure, cultural experience, and focus on practical learning further enhance the appeal of studying MBBS in this beautiful Central Asian nation.

The life of a international student
Being an international student is exciting you get to learn different cultures and experience the world but its a hard transition to move from one country to another. I sometimes compare it to going to a boarding school in high school but now you are soo far away from home. I learn at Parul university in India and I would say I have experienced a mixture of good and bad.
One of the things a struggled with when I arrived from my home country Zimbabwe back in September 2022 was the weather. India is hot and humid the air smelt different. I had imagined that India would be cold and cool something similar to where I am from. I soon learned what the moon soon rains look like and the hot summers which reach 45+ degrees celcius.
On my journey to India I did not travel alone I came with a few of my country mates whom i did know. The experience was exciting and a little bit stress full but we made it to Mumbai my first destination. The airport is beautiful and we soon made our way to the train station. I remember it was raining so we saw some good scenery
living far from home can make most of us feel lonely but with time you make new friends and they become you new family, it is important to create meaning fool friends because it is helpful. Hindi is a very tough language to learn I would suggest anyone to learn it. It makes communication with locals easier and simpler and soo far I have had a good time in India. Despite the heat I would say people should come visit India to come experience good food and beautiful places India has to offer.

SRINAGAR, India — Weapons left behind by U.S. forces during the withdrawal from Afghanistan are surfacing in another conflict, further arming militants in the disputed South Asian region of Kashmir in what experts say could be just the start of the weapons’ global journey.
Authorities in Indian-controlled Kashmir tell NBC News that militants trying to annex the region for Pakistan are carrying M4s, M16s and other U.S.-made arms and ammunition that have rarely been seen in the 30-year conflict. A major reason, they say, is a regional flood of U.S.-funded weapons that fell into the hands of the Taliban when U.S.-led NATO forces withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021.
Most of the weapons recovered so far, officials say, are from Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) or Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), both Pakistan-based militant groups that the U.S. designates as terrorist organizations. In a Twitter post last year, for example, police said they had seized an M4 carbine assault rifle after a gunfight that killed two militants from JeM.
Militants from both groups had been sent to Afghanistan to fight alongside or train the Taliban before the U.S. withdrawal, said Lt. Col. Emron Musavi, an Indian army spokesperson in Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir.
“It can be safely assumed that they have access to the weapons left behind,” he said.
Government officials in Afghanistan and Pakistan did not respond to requests for comment.
Kashmir, a Himalayan region known for its beautiful landscapes, shares borders with India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China. A separatist insurgency in the part of Kashmir controlled by India has killed tens of thousands of people since the 1990s and been a constant source of tension between nuclear powers India and Pakistan.
The year opened in violence as Kashmir police blamed militants for a Jan. 1 gunfire attack that killed four people in the southern village of Dhangri, followed by an explosion in the same area the next day that killed a 5-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl. At least six people were injured on Jan. 21 in two explosions in the city of Jammu.
While the U.S.-made weapons are unlikely to shift the balance of power in the Kashmir conflict, they give the Taliban a sizable reservoir of combat power potentially available to those willing and able to purchase it, said Jonathan Schroden, director of the Countering Threats and Challenges Program at the Center for Naval Analyses, a research group based outside Washington.
“When combined with the Taliban’s need for money and extant smuggling networks, that reservoir poses a substantial threat to regional actors for years to come,” he said.
A trove of weapons
More than $7.1 billion in U.S.-funded military equipment was in the possession of the Afghan government when it fell to the Taliban in August 2021 amid the withdrawal, according to a Defense Department report published last August. Though more than half of it was ground vehicles, it also included more than 316,000 weapons worth almost $512 million, plus ammunition and other accessories.
While large numbers of small arms that had been transferred to Afghan forces most likely ended up in the hands of the Taliban, “it’s important to remember that nearly all weapons and equipment used by U.S. military forces in Afghanistan were either retrograded or destroyed prior to our withdrawal,” Army Lt. Col. Rob Lodewick, a spokesperson for the Pentagon, said in a statement.
The Defense Department report also pointed out that the operational condition of the Afghan army’s equipment was unknown.
Questions around the weapons being used in Kashmir were raised in January 2022, when a video of militants brandishing what appeared to be American-made guns was shared widely on Indian social media. Though the origin of the weapons in such cases can be difficult to verify — some may be modified to look like U.S. weapons, while others may not have been manufactured in the U.S. — the Indian military says it has recovered at least seven that are authentic.
“From the weapons and equipment that we recovered, we realized that there was a spillover of high-tech weapons, night-vision devices and equipment, which were left by the Americans in Afghanistan [and] were now finding their way toward this side,” Maj. Gen. Ajay Chandpuria, an Indian army official, was quoted as saying by Indian media last year.
Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Gov. Manoj Sinha said the government was aware of the issue and that measures were in place to combat the infiltration of U.S. weapons into Kashmir.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and have taken steps accordingly. Our police and army are on the job,” Sinha, the region’s top official, said on the sidelines of a news conference last year at his official residence in Srinagar.
Kashmir police official Vijay Kumar also said authorities were fully capable of countering the militant threat.
“Our forces are tracking down militants on a daily basis,” he said. “We are constantly upgrading our equipment and have the latest weaponry at our disposal.”
The militant groups JeM and LeT could be buying U.S. weapons from the Taliban in Afghanistan, where the United Nations says both groups have bases, or through smugglers in Pakistan, said Ajai Sahni, an author on counterterrorism who serves as executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management, a think tank in New Delhi.
Militants will struggle to get the upper hand, however, without more advanced weapons that have greater firepower but are more difficult to smuggle into the region, Sahni said.
Schroden said that although he had not seen substantial reports of U.S.-made weapons left behind in Afghanistan appearing outside of Kashmir, it would not be surprising if they eventually began turning up farther away in places such as Yemen, Syria and parts of Africa.
“I suspect there hasn’t yet been enough time for these weapons to percolate out that far,” he said. “It’s also possible that the Taliban have held tightly to most of them thus far as part of their efforts to consolidate power and seek legitimization from the international community.”
Beyond weapons, the Taliban’s victory in Afghanistan gave an ideological boost to radical militants in Kashmir and elsewhere, said Ahmad Shuja Jamal, a former Afghan civil servant living in exile in Australia.
Such militants, he said, “now see in clear terms the political dividends of long-term violence.”

Healing
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and caught up in the chaos of daily life. From work deadlines to family obligations and social events, it can be hard to find a moment of peace. However, finding inner peace is essential for our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Here are some ways to find peace in the midst of chaos:
Practice Mindfulness Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and focusing your attention on your thoughts, emotions, and surroundings. By practicing mindfulness, you can learn to let go of distractions and worries and find a sense of calm in the present moment. You can practice mindfulness through meditation, yoga, or simply taking a few deep breaths and focusing on your breath.
Take a Digital Detox Technology can be a significant source of stress and distraction. Take a break from your phone, computer, and social media to disconnect and recharge. Instead, spend time in nature, read a book, or engage in an activity that brings you joy.
Simplify Your Life Sometimes, the chaos in our lives comes from having too much on our plates. Simplify your life by prioritizing your commitments and focusing on what’s most important. Say no to things that don’t serve you, delegate tasks to others, and make time for self-care.
Engage in Physical Activity Physical activity is a great way to release stress and tension from your body. Find an exercise or activity that you enjoy, such as running, yoga, or dancing, and make it a regular part of your routine.
Connect with Others Sometimes, finding peace in the midst of chaos means reaching out to others. Connect with friends and family, join a support group, or seek out professional help if needed. Talking to others can help you gain perspective and find a sense of community.
Practice Gratitude Gratitude is the practice of focusing on the positive aspects of your life and being thankful for what you have. Take time each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for, whether it’s your health, your relationships, or the beauty of nature. Focusing on gratitude can help shift your mindset and bring a sense of peace to your life.
Set Boundaries Boundaries are essential for protecting your time, energy, and well-being. Learn to say no to things that don’t align with your values and goals, and set limits on how much time you spend on work, social media, or other activities.
In conclusion, finding peace in the midst of chaos is possible, but it requires intentional effort and self-care. By practicing mindfulness, simplifying your life, engaging in physical activity, connecting with others, practicing gratitude, and setting boundaries, you can find a sense of calm and balance in your life. Remember that finding peace is a journey, not a destination, and it takes time and practice to cultivate inner peace.

Day 7 : Vivana Culture Hotel - Mandawa
15th March 2023
Woke up to the sound of peacocks clacking and birds chattering, I forced myself out of bed and into the front of our tent and managed 20 minutes of exercise. There was a cool breeze whistling through the branches of the trees surrounding the encampment and there couldn’t have been a nicer day to do some jabs and crosses.
Dharmendra sauntered up along the path with some chai for us around 7.30am after which we had some breakfast with Rangmala for company.  I petted and played with her for a while trying very hard to avoid her trunk evacuations, however she got me anyway, blowing out a stream of mucus that covered my face and glasses. It was no bother, I just washed my face a hundred times before sitting down for breakfast.
We then re packed, throwing everything into the suitcases, all order has gone and everything was stuffed into both cases on a first come, first served basis.
Jagdish was waiting for us at the Sanctuary gates and we piled into the Toyota and settled back, opened a bottle of water and relaxed for the ride to Mandawa.
There really wasn’t much to see, we mostly travelled on the motorway and only passed a few towns towards the end of our journey.
We turned into an unkempt, neglected, dusty road and bumped our way along it, avoiding the many cows and dogs that found their way in front of us.
It has been a very long, dry spring in Rajasthan and the dust has got into my every crevice, everything I touch has a certain crunch to it and there is a fine sheen of granules on every surface.
The dust swirled around us and even though the windows were closed I could taste the grit in my mouth and could feel the dust inside my trainers.
Finally we arrived at the Vivana, two fells were sitting idly about probably shooting the breeze but the moment they saw us they both jumped up, picked up an instrument and began wailing some tune.
The door was large, but we stepped through a smaller one and into the most beautiful courtyard, dimly lit and hanging heavy with incense.
Vibrant fresco and murals depicting Hindu gods, flowers and animals surrounded us, I stood for a moment and enjoyed the feeling of pure joy at being there.
We quickly checked in and were led to our room and on opening the door were amazed to see how modern it was, a “ four poster “ bed, walk in shower, however the only nod towards the Indian culture was the seating, a raised platform, covered in a mattress and cushions  scattered about it. Who needs a chair when I could lounge on something so comfortable.
Just as I was relaxing, we were off again to meet our guide in Mandawa at 4pm, a bit late to start a tour but I didn’t really think we would that long, after all it was only a walking tour of the town, mainly to see the fresco’s adorning the outside walls of the buildings.
We were met by a personable young man who confirmed the tour time was around 2 hours and with that comforting thought buzzing around in my head we were on our way.
The town is derelict, half the buildings are either in a state of disrepair or just falling down. The Main Street is a dusty, dirty 10 foot wide road that is home to stray dogs and cows, bulls, and small thin shops on either side.
These shops are  held together by corrugated sheets balanced together, rather like a house of cards and were stuffed into every nook and cranny, every available space was taken by one entrepreneurial business or other .
On we walked, stopping every so often to admire a dilapidated building with a faded picture of a god or cow or train painted on its walls.  Some of the Haveli, which are the traditional style of townhouse in India, were open to us so in we stepped,  admiring its faded grandeur, we were informed that a lot of them were being renovated into hotels. Our guide told us that there were 25 hotels in a town of 18000 people, the reason for this was  because of the many festivals held and also because Mandawa had become a filming location.
We trudged on, walking up this street and down that one, avoiding the potholes, piles of rubbish and pools of water.  The one thing I did notice was that there were no hawkers pushing stuff in my face, in fact everyone largely ignored us, we got a few interested glances but that was all.
It was 6pm and I started making “ I’m tired “ noises but the guide took no notice and by now each building looked the same, each fresco looked the same and each description sounded the same.
I think the final straw that broke me was when after 3 hours on my feet, feeling hot, sweaty, dusty and fatigued, our guide took us into an art shop. It was obvious from the start that this was a ploy to get us to spend some money, however, much to his dissatisfaction we didn’t and in fact Tony made it clear we now needed to get back to the hotel.
So another long trek ensued, by now it was dusk and in the twilight the population of Mandawa came out in force, men were sitting in huddles and smoking, children played  in the street, ladies covered in colourful saris or burka were shopping, their rattan bags overflowing with local fresh produce.
I don’t think I appreciated any of this, I just wanted to sit down and take the weight off my feet because knowing my body well, I knew I would end up stiff as a plank of wood in the morning.
We finally got back to the hotel at 7pm just in time for dinner and the obligatory puppet show, which wasn’t a patch on the one in Jaipur, but we watched and clapped anyway.

My Education Part 3 What type of yoga do I teach myself? At the moment I teach a yoga mix based on my experience from the teachers I learnt from and based on the needs of my clients. I learnt yoga all over the world. My first encounter with yoga happened in 2010, in Ukraine, Iyengar yoga. In this style of yoga one uses lots of props - objects to help you improve your poses, such as blankets, chairs, belts, block, bolsters, etc. When I moved to Mexico I started practicing vinyasa yoga which is a flow of yoga poses, restorative yoga which is more slow paced and therapeutic, Iyengar yoga and Ashtanga yoga which is a sequence of certain yoga poses done in specific order. I also tried Yin yoga, and Bikram yoga. The type that resonated with me the most were vinyasa and restorative yoga. Once my practice became more deep and committed, I went to India in 2013 and got my 500 hours Yoga Teacher Training certification in Hatha yoga which is a classical one. I was a beautiful experience to learn yoga from its birthplace and to deep dive into its roots, philosophy, and practical aspects of it. I have attended vinyasa yoga, alignment, Iyengar, yoga for runners workshops in Mexico, Europe, and India. When I came back from India I decided to take another teacher training course in Spanish - to learn Western approach and to practice Spanish more to be able to teach yoga in Spanish in Mexico. So, I embarked on another yoga journey with Dharma yoga student TJ Jackson. Dharma Mittra is a Brazilian yoga teacher who lives in New York and who developed his own style, from my perspective a well structured mixture of ashtanga and vinyasa yoga styles. Oh, and of course Kundalini yoga! I practiced Kundalini yoga, too. I’m not certified as a Kundalini yogi however there was a time in my life when for solid 2 years I was a dedicated follower of it. I went to meditations with Guru Dev Singh in Mexico, Harijiwan Singh who came from LA to Mexico to give a gong meditation which was absolutely mind blowing, and I have visited quite a few White Tantras in Mexico and the US. My personal approach in yoga is to be open and learn from every teacher and student who I meet with. #yoga https://www.instagram.com/p/CngpLszLiN4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
