Turkey and India are at odds over a proposed initiative introduced by India, the United States and the European Union at the G20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi on September 9, 2023. The initiative seeks to establish a substantial economic corridor linking Europe with the Middle East and India via rail and sea routes. It aims to connect India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan, Israel and the EU through strategically placed shipping ports and an extensive railway network.

Excluded from this corridor, Turkey openly expressed discomfort with the initiative, which it believes undermines its role as a trade hub and favors Greece and other regional competitors. Instead, Turkey supports China’s expansive Belt and Road projects.

Ankara is also advancing the realization of an alternative route, known as the Development Road, which aims to connect Europe and the Middle East through Turkey. “We say there can be no corridor without Turkey. The most suitable route for traffic from east to west must pass through Turkey,” said Erdogan on his return flight from India last year.

Erdogan said they are discussing a corridor that goes from Iraq, Qatar and Abu Dhabi through Turkey to Europe. The corridor is a 1,200-kilometer (745-mile) transportation route comprising railways, motorways and pipelines. It will stretch from Iraq’s Faw Port in Basra to the Turkish port of Mersin and is estimated to cost $20 billion.

Turkey’s anti-Indian policies have prompted New Delhi to seek alliances with countries where Turkey faces challenges in its neighborhood, such as Greece, Cyprus and Armenia, in order to send a message to Ankara that it is prepared to play hardball. As a result, security, military and intelligence cooperation among India, Greece, Cyprus and Armenia has been significantly enhanced in recent years.

Suzuka in April Feels Wrong

So, this weekend F1 will race at Suzuka. Suzuka is an amazing circuit, the esses at the beginning of the lap, trying to take Degner 1 as fast as possible but knowing the gravel trap is right there at the edge of the circuit, and then hard on the brakes for Degner 2, under the bridge, and up and to the right into the hairpin where Kamui Kobayashi seemed to overtake just about everyone in 2012. The only problem is, Raikkonen's 2005 charge (admittedly I was too young to properly enjoy that but it's literally the back to front challenge meme in real life), Kamui's 2012 podium as a Japanese driver, even Vettel's heartbreaking sparkplug failure in 2017, not to mention the historic Prost and Senna collisions...all of those happened at the end of the season, or close enough to it anyway. This year, Suzuka is in April, the fourth round of the 2024 Formula One season.

Now of course, there's a reason for this - the geography of an increasingly bloated F1 calendar - but first, let's just establish why the Japanese Grand Prix being at the end of the season is so important.

The first Japanese Grand Prix, held in 1976 and 1977, marked the first time a world championship race was held in Asia, and it was the finale too, the place where the championship would be decided. The 1976 race in particular, covered in the excellent 2013 movie Rush, saw Niki Lauda pull into the pits in dangerously wet conditions - this was the same year as his Nürburgring crash - which allowed James Hunt to charge up the field and seal his only world title.

The first Fuji trip would only last two years, but in 1987, F1 would find its home in Suzuka. It was the penultimate race - Adelaide, Australia was now the finale - but nevertheless, Suzuka was still the place where titles were decided. In 1988, Senna came from behind in the wet to beat Prost, in 1989 Prost would close the door on a charging Senna in the Casio triangle on lap 47, taking Prost out. Senna cut the chicane rejoining the track, got disqualified, and handed the title to Prost. In 1990, Prost now in a Ferrari, got a better start than Senna's polesitting McLaren, but Senna's wouldn't give an inch, and they didn't even make it past the first corner this time. Senna would seal the 1990 title. And it continued, Senna over Mansell in 1991, Hill over Villeneuve in 1996, Hakkinen over Schumacher in 1998...it was the track where history was made.

That being said, it's position in the calendar started to change as F1 expanded its Asia-Pacific presence from just Suzuka. From 1987-1995, it was paired with the Australian Grand Prix at Adelaide, in 1999 and 2000, it was paired with Malaysia, and from 2004-2008, it was paired with China. After that, the calendar more or less formed two flyaway blocks, with Australia-Malaysia-China-Bahrain at the beginning of the season, and a Singapore and Suzuka towards the end, paired with an everchanging host of flyaway races that included Abu Dhabi, Brazil, South Korea, and India. In 2009, Suzuka was the third to last race, come 2011, it was fifth to last.

The real blow to Suzuka as an end of season race, however, was the emergence of an American block of races late in the season. It started with Austin in 2012, and by 2015, we had Austin and Mexico back-to-back followed by Brazil, making for three western hemisphere races in a row. Las Vegas in 2023 made a fourth, with Abu Dhabi having long ago bought the season finale slot. All of this means that, in 2023, there were a whole two months of racing after Suzuka.

Thus, figuring that history is dead, F1 has decided to move Suzuka to April, so that, much like 2004-2008, it's back-to-back with the Chinese Grand Prix. Which means F1 will now have Baku and Singapore as a doubleheader in 2024...yeah.

For something meant to cut down on F1's travel related CO2 emissions, they really did just decide to make the entire circus fly over the entirety of the Asian continent in a week. Good job.

What the race does succeed in, however, is reminding us of the last time F1 raced in Japan in April, the 1994 and 1995 Pacific Grand Prix. A rare moment of two races in the same country for F1, when in addition to the end of season trip to Suzuka, there was an early season trip to the T1 Circuit in Okayama. It's a pretty neat track, I've raced it on Ride 4, probably better for bikes than cars though.

So yeah, not much for the environment, but it does remind us of an obscure race nobody has ever heard of, so there is that.

India and the Untied Arab Emirates inked a trade deal on Tuesday to connect the subcontinent with Europe via ports in the Middle East.

The deal was announced during a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Abu Dhabi, where he met Emirati President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

“This would build on previous understandings and cooperation on this matter and foster India and the UAE cooperation furthering regional connectivity,” India’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. …

The 24th EU-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting follows up on the EU-ASEAN commemorative Summit of December 2022, during which the EU pledged to mobilise €10 billion for connectivity projects in ASEAN by 2027 under the Global Gateway investment strategy. Already €4.2 billion is being engaged.

To emphasise the centrality of ASEAN in the EU Indo-Pacific Strategy, ASEAN Foreign Ministers have also been invited to participate in the EU’s 3rd Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum, to be held on the same day.

Global Gateway is the EU’s positive offer to reduce the worldwide investment disparity and boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems.

The Global Gateway strategy embodies a Team Europe approach that brings together the European Union, EU Member States, and European development finance institutions. The EU project is ambitious. It is intended to help ensure, that it, and not China or the USA will gain dominance. This is strategically interesting in that Europe is not intending to spend as much as China, but by being more selective about where to spend its funds, it will mainly fill in ‘gaps’ that it expects will benefit it the most. Notice that North America is NOT part of the connectivity plans.

Furthermore, unlike the Chinese plan, the European one involves infrastructure around data and communications technology.

The Bible shows that economically as the “daughter of Babylon,” Europe will rise up in this century–(cf. Revelation chapters 17 & 18)–and this Global Gateway project is another step in that direction.

Consider that while China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) itself will face various obstacles, it looks to be supportive of some biblical prophecies as roads normally work two ways. China is connecting to Asia, Africa, and Europe, hence this also connects Europe to Africa and Asia, including China.

Since the Bible teaches that it will be Europe that will dominate world trade, the BRI and Europe’s Global Gateway look to be ways that Europe will get access to markets in Asia and Africa. Roads work both ways. Furthermore, Europe has a long history of trading with Asia and Latin America and is biblically prophesied to continue to do so.

Consider that the Bible teaches the following about an end time European power:

Now we all know that Europe has its own currency–a currency that some see as the logical replacement for the US dollar for world trade. Now, let me add that less than a decade after the above was published, the WCG publicly announced that Eastern Europe would also be part of this European power. And within a decade of that, Eastern European nations began to officially join in with what has become the European Union (more in Eastern Europe have also applied to become members of the EU). And, in population, the European Union already is actually much larger than that of the USA. The Global Gateway project and the EU’s support of the G20 connectivity goals are steps intended to help Europe rise up. And, yes, most Americans are “asleep at the switch” to what is happening.

EU’s Global Gateway, Trade, and War?

The European Union announced that it planned to spend €300 billion ($340 billion) in a program called ‘Global Gateway.’ According to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen it is a “true alternative” to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, also known as the Silk Road Project. Both the EU and Chinese projects will improve road, ports, and/or other infrastructure to connect with Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Will this result in increased trade for Europe and Asia during the time of the Gentiles? Will Babylonian Europe dominate trade for a time? Will devastating war hit Europe with Russian and Eurasian involvement? Would infrastructure these projects are involved in be used for war? What about preparation for Armageddon? That said, while the USA supported and praised the new connectivity initiative from the G20, the connectivity does not really connect the USA.

The Chinese and Europeans are building infrastructure in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Asia, like roads and ports. India is also involved.

A Landmark of Harmony: PM Modi Inaugurates BAPS Temple in UAE

BAPS, the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, undertook the construction of this magnificent edifice. Founded within the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, a Vaishnav sect of Hinduism, BAPS has a global presence with over 1,550 temples worldwide, including renowned landmarks like the Akshardham temples in New Delhi and Gandhinagar.

The genesis of the Abu Dhabi temple traces back to a vision articulated by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of BAPS, in 1997. The temple’s towering height of 108 feet and sprawling dimensions — 262 feet in length and 180 feet in width — captivate visitors with its imposing presence. A striking Wall of Harmony, adorned with 3D-printed motifs and multilingual inscriptions, commemorates key milestones in the temple’s construction journey. The temple’s surroundings, adorned with 96 bells paying homage to Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s legacy, resonate with spiritual reverence and cultural significance.

The inauguration of the BAPS temple underscores the ethos of inclusivity and openness. Like all BAPS temples worldwide, it welcomes visitors from diverse backgrounds, fostering dialogue and understanding across communities.

Beyond its architectural splendor, the temple epitomizes a narrative of collaboration and unity. PM Modi's Historic Inauguration Ceremony at BAPS Hindu Mandir Abu Dhabi

14th February 2024, is all set to be a historic day for India in the context of its Middle East relations: on this auspicious day of Basant Panchami, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will be inaugurating the BAPS Hindu Temple, also called the Swami Narayan Mandir, in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. 

This is the first Hindu temple in the UAE and also one of the biggest outside India; that in itself is sufficient for one to be overawed. However, this was not something that happened on the spur of the moment; it had been in the works for quite a while, since 1997. 

In 1997, His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, President of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) visited the UAE and prayed for a temple there that fostered unity not just among religions but cultures and countries too. 

Over the better part of the next 2 decades, BAPS members met with officials of the UAE government to thrash out the possibility of bringing to fruition Swami Maharaj’s dream. 

Then, in 2015, 2 important things happened; Shri Narendra Modi visited the UAE – he was the first Indian PM in 34 years, after Mrs. Indira Gandhi, to go there – and the government of the UAE provided, through the Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the required land for construction of the temple in August. 

Mr. Modi openly appreciated the decision of the UAE government, and both the Indian and UAE governments handed over the task of overseeing the project to the BAPS Swami Narayan Sanstha and Mandir Limited on 10th February 2018. The consecration ceremony – Shila Pujan – was completed on 11th February 2018 and BAPS members, in the presence of Swami Maharaj and members of the Indian and UAE governments, laid the foundation stone on 20th April 2019.

Built at a total cost of over Rs.700 crores, the temple has 7 towers representing the seven Emirates of the UAE. It is set to be a marvel of architecture that has been built keeping in mind the practice followed in ancient times: for instance, there are no steel or iron reinforcements in the construction; it has been done entirely using stone. 

Another major feature in the BAPS temple has been the use of fly ash in the concrete mix – this ensures the replacement of approximately 55% of the cement therein – to ensure eco-friendliness and a reduction of the carbon footprint. The presence of over 300 sensors at different levels ensures the availability of live data about physical factors like temperature, stress, pressure, and also seismic events.

All the years of hard work are set to bear fruit now, once PM Modi – at the invitation of BAPS members and His Holiness Brahmavihari Swami (who was recently awarded the GOOD Fellows award by SWFI Chairman, Mr. Lakshmi Narayanan) – inaugurates the temple on 14th February. He is also set to address the Indian community there at Zayed Sports City to commemorate the event.
