Took these snaps of this unusual looking building in North Yorkshire, England in 2021. It is - or was a microwave relay station disguised as a farm building. Last winter (22/23) high winds caused a little damage. A local resident has kindly given permission to add their post damage photos to this blog.

Car culture is pretty bad but honestly in my experience bike to work culture in the United States is even worse.

They'll post videos of themselves biking past traffic and caption it "look at all these sheep, they're too fat and lazy and stupid to realize biking would make their lives a million times better, that's the only reason why anyone wouldn't bike, there's no other reason." One million upvotes and I'm barely exaggerating

Have you tried not being out of shape? Have you tried not living in a hilly area? Have you tried not being anxious about being hit by cars? Have you tried not being disabled? Have you tried not getting sweaty on the way to work? Have you tried being able to afford an ebike? Have you tried not loving to destroy the environment? Why do you love spending money on gas for no reason?

God forbid you're a beginner and want to use biking to get in shape and want to start learning. If no one taught you how to ride a bike growing up you're pretty much fucked unless some organization offers a class on the very very very basics of biking. I was lucky enough to get to go to one and it was filled with people who were so so excited to learn how to bike and clearly desperate to talk to someone who wasn't an absolute snob about it. At least car people will usually offer to give you a ride when they find out you don't drive instead of trying to systemically knock down all your "excuses" for why you don't bike

I try not to be That Guy who makes fun of people in warm and temperate climates when they can't handle an inch of snow. I do actually understand that if you don't have the infrastructure for it or experience driving on it, that's enough to cause problems.

But sometimes I catch myself being dismissive. Like this morning when I saw a headline about heavy snow in the UK and just instinctively assumed we were talking a couple inches. And maybe some places that's what it is, but the numbers given for higher altitude areas? That would be enough snow to keep me trapped at home for a while here, too, and we DO have the plows and salt and populace who know how to deal with snow and ice.

Stay safe out there, everyone. If temps are below freezing and your pipes aren't well-insulated, make sure you leave a faucet dripping to prevent them freezing and bursting, okay?
