You could fry an egg inside my car lately. I park outside, so the sun is always shining through the windows, heating up the interior. The peeling purple tint that was installed poorly in the mid-90s doesn't do much against it. As a result, every time I climb in, I basically scorch my hand on either the steel shift knob, the exposed metal of the worn-out steering wheel, or the exposed metal where my seat cushion used to be but currently is not.

Now, I want to warn you before we go any further. Although I did say you can fry an egg inside my car, I don't recommend doing so. For one thing, the egg is going to get a lot of microplastics inside it, and possibly a little bit of ash from the turbocharger burning off all that leaky oil. That's not really "health code," and I've got enough problems with bylaw as it is. It's a metaphorical egg, okay?

There were a lot of ways that I tried to solve this problem, but by far the worst was attaching a roll-out canvas cover. I stole it from an RV dealership, because I felt that the needs of the many (myself and everyone who has to interact with me) outweigh the needs of the few (the owner of the dealership.) Any idiot could tell you how this was supposed to work: I'd unfurl the awning and put it in a position that blocks the sun.

Unfortunately, physics has a thing called "wind." If you're not familiar, wind is so powerful that entire countries cook their toast using it. In my case, the canvas made a sort of white-trash sailboat sail. What's worse, the sail clapping against the body of my car sealed up all the giant rust holes through which the wind usually blew harmlessly through. With those two phenomenon combined, and also the parking brake I have that doesn't exactly work, my car blew down the street and well away from my house.

Normally, I would have been excited about being able to cover 40 miles without using a single drop of gasoline, but it's not nearly as much fun for your car to crash through a house when you're not behind the wheel at the time. I ended up telling the police some bullshit about it being a prototype autonomous car, which gave me enough time to cut the awning loose and escape while they looked up which billionaire was involved in funding it.

That said, the interior was nice and cool. All that brickwork I blew through did a fantastic job sinking the heat. Another success!

Learning the train lines that would take him to Shujin Academy was a little difficult. But thankfully, there'd been a few people willing to help him find his way. Akechi was grateful for this, giving a small bow and thanking the people for their help.

He wished he'd had the foresight to bring an umbrella, though, as it started to gently sprinkle. Before long, it started to outright rain and he ran underneath the awning of a store to get out of it. Without an umbrella, he couldn't exactly head to the school without getting drenched.

Getting his phone out of his pocket, he checked the forecast. Of course it was scheduled to rain for the next hour. That was just his luck, wasn't it?

Late on the first day of school. Honestly, he couldn't even begin to imagine how he'd explain this to Sakura-san.

If only he'd known beforehand and not expected it to be sunny all day...

Another Shujin student walked over under the awning, dusted herself off and pulled off the hood of her jacket. Long, fluffy twintails poofed out and caught Akechi's attention. Blonde hair? That was really, really rare to see. Her skin was a bit like porcelain, and she was very pretty-looking.

But he didn't stare, knowing that was rude. Instead, he hoped to wait out the rain. At least, until he was offered a ride alongside the girl who had waited under the awning... by a man who he didn't know. He knew better than to get into cars with strangers, but he wished the girl hadn't.

....And that he had the foresight to stop her before, because she looked upset as the window rolled up and the car drove off... just as someone ran up.

Another Shujin student, by the looks of his uniform. Akechi briefly looked at his own uniform, which wasn't the Shujin standard. They had told him it'd take a week for the new uniform to get there, so they'd given him a temporary pass to wear his old one.

"Damn it! Screw that pervy teacher!" The student said, sounding outraged. Akechi raised a brow. Pervy teacher?

Unbeknownst to him, his phone had recorded that in the strange app that had installed itself on his phone.

"A pervy teacher?" Akechi asked, putting his phone back in his pocket. "That man in the car?"

That got the student's attention, and he turned to look at Akechi with a look asking 'are you serious right now?' on his face. Yes, he was serious. He didn't know anything about the teachers of Shujin, hence why he'd asked the question.

"Yeah, that 'man in the car'." Came the response, though it sounded like the student was pretty bitter about it. It was pretty subtle, but the tone of his voice said it all. He didn't like that man, he was bitter about something.

"Now I'm even more glad I didn't take him up on his offer for a ride." Akechi was a little relieved. Who knows what would've happened if he did? He studied the student a bit more. His slouch, the way he carried himself, his hands in his pockets... and he noted the way he kept most of his weight on his right leg. As if something was wrong with his left.

Defensive. Brusque. Standoffish. Like a wounded animal who was trying to keep itself from getting even more hurt. This student had been hurt, and he was lashing out... wasn't he?

To prevent more hurt. To protect himself.

"He offered you a ride?" The disbelief in the boy's voice made Akechi laugh a little. "What's so funny?!"

"I suppose it's because I was an unfamiliar face to him." Akechi responded. "Ah, I apologize for laughing. The disbelief in your voice was kind of funny to hear after how you complained about the pervy teacher."

The look on his face at that point made Akechi smile a bit. The utter confusion was kind of cute, in a way. If only it wasn't marred by the defensiveness of the boy's stance and the way it faded after a few seconds.

"You're not a student at Shujin, are you?" Came the student's question after a few moments.

"Yes, I am. I don't get the uniform until next week, given my transfer was so sudden." Akechi admitted. He watched the boy's expression a bit more. "I wouldn't be down this pathway otherwise."

As the student was about to answer, a wave of lightheadedness hit Akechi. Putting a hand to his head, he wondered what that was about. He heard the boy muttering something about a castle, but didn't question it.

After a few more exchanged words between the two, mostly Akechi asking the boy if they could go to the school together since he didn't know the way, they both headed off towards Shujin...

Not knowing what was to come.
