What is a Secure Enclave?
Secure Enclaves: The Powerful Way to Make Data Secure by DefaultExecutive Summary
A major threat to enterprise IT already exists inside your organization: insiders. While most enterprises already take steps to protect systems from end users, credentialed insiders with unfettered access are even more dangerous, and this is not limited to employees. Third parties, including employees at cloud providers, are often to blame for insider breaches. Nation-states and other bad actors, can also present credentials that make them look like insiders.
Current methods and technologies to prevent IT insider threats have had severe limitations. Now there’s a new approach being implemented by nearly every major hardware and cloud vendor. Secure enclaves provide a comprehensive, more secure solution that protects data, applications, and storage from insiders and third parties — on premises, and in both private and public clouds.
What is a Secure Enclave?
A secure enclave provides CPU hardware-level isolation and memory encryption on every server, by isolating application code and data from anyone with privileges, and encrypting its memory. With additional software, secure enclaves enable the encryption of both storage and network data for simple full stack security. Secure enclave hardware support is built into all new CPUs from Intel and AMD.
Insiders: The Threat No One Wants to Talk About
Until now, most cybersecurity efforts have focused on controlling network access by outsiders or end users. The greatest harm, however, is likely to come from insiders — system administrators, network architects, system analysts, developers, and site reliability engineers — who often have authorized access to data, networks, and applications. They may misuse or abuse their access to steal or damage sensitive data. Breaches may also occur unintentionally due to lax security protocols. It’s estimated that 43% of all breaches are committed by insiders — both accidental and intentional.
Probably one of the most infamous examples of intentional insider breaches is the case of Edward Snowden, a Booz Allen contractor working with the NSA. In 2013, Snowden, stole nearly 2 million intelligence files in what is considered one of the biggest thefts of US secrets in history. As a system administrator and architect, Snowden had unlimited access to NSA systems, and he was also able to access files from other sites, including those of other countries.2 The incursions continue to occur. In 2019, two Twitter employees were charged with spying for Saudi Arabia by accessing information on Saudi Arabian dissidents who used the Twitter platform.
Prevention Not Detection
In today’s environment, enterprises can never be sure all threats have been detected and handled in a timely manner. Moving to prevention changes the focus from chasing malicious acts that have already occurred to maintaining secure resources and networks.
To ensure enterprise security, protecting data and applications is not sufficient. Memory and networks need to be protected as well. This protection should include not only on-premises applications and data, but also operations that run in both private and public clouds. While today’s approaches protect data at rest and in transit, data in use has not been properly addressed, because it is the most complicated and difficult state to protect.
The Confidential Computing Consortium was founded in 2019, under the auspices of The Linux Foundation, to address this problem. The consortium’s goal is to define and promote the adoption of confidential computing — specifically to protect sensitive data within system memory. More than 20 industry leaders have joined the group, including Alibaba, Anjuna, ARM, Baidu, Facebook, Google Cloud, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Red Hat, Tencent, and VMware.
Secure Enclaves Deliver High-Level Hardware Security
Secure enclaves (also known as Trusted Execution Environments or TEE) are at the core of confidential computing. Secure Enclaves are sets of security-related instruction codes built into new CPUs. They protect data in use, because the enclave is decrypted on the fly only within the CPU, and then only for code and data running within the enclave itself.
Introduced by Intel as Software Guard Extensions (SGX)6, secure enclaves are based on hardware-level encrypted memory isolation. AMD now offers similar functionality with its SEV technology, built into Epyc. By the end of 2020, secure enclaves will be supported by nearly every server and cloud platform, including Intel, AMD, Amazon AWS (with their new Nitro Enclaves)7, Microsoft Azure8, VMware, Google, Docker, and Red Hat.

Installing a virtual PC application with Mac OS X
Since XCode only runs on Mac OS X, you’ll need to be able to simulate an installation of Mac OS X on Windows. This is surprisingly easy to do with virtualization software like VMWare or open source alternative VirtualBox.

You’ll also need an installation disc for Mac OS X. You can purchase this online from the Apple Store or, if you already own a MacBook, iMac, or Mac Pro, you can use the install disc you received with your computer.
Once you’ve installed VirtualBox, open the application and choose to install Mac OS X Server 64 Bit. Provide the virtual computer with at least 2GB of RAM (if you have more than 8GB of RAM, choose 4GB+) and more than 30GB of hard disk space.
VirtualBox will automatically configure the operating system, but you’ll still need to make a few changes manually. Open the Settings menu and carry out the following changes:
On the System tab, uncheck Enable EFI
On the Processor tab, select at least two CPUs
On the Display tab, increase the video memory to at least 128MB
Installing Mac OS X and booting your virtual machine
Install Xcode For Mac Mojave
Finally, you’ll need to download a Hackboot boot loader to install OS X. You can find a Hackboot install file by searching Google – in this case, you’ll need Hackboot 1 and Hackboot 2, as well as your OS X disc, to complete the installation.
Select your Hackboot 1 disc image, and then start the virtual machine. Your virtual machine will boot, and you’ll see an OS X screen. Using the menu at the bottom of the screen, launch the disc drive that contains your OS X installation disc.

From here, you’ll need to follow the installation instructions for Mac OS X. It takes several minutes to install the operating system. Once the process is finished, you’ll need to switch off your virtual machine and change your boot disc.
Reopen VirtualBox and, leaving all of your other settings the same, switch your boot disc from Hackboot 1 to Hackboot 2. You’ll boot into a screen with two icons. Select Mac OS X and press Enter to initiate the Mac OS X boot sequence.
During the Mac OS X configuration sequence, you’ll need to enter your Apple ID. This is necessary for downloading the XCode toolset later, so make sure you enter a valid Apple account when you configure your operating system.
Installing XCode on your Mac OS X virtual machine
Once you’ve configured your Mac OS X virtual machine, installing XCode is relatively easy. Before you install XCode, you’ll want to configure your virtual machine to your preferred resolution and settings using the System Preferences menu.
Is this your first time using Mac OS X? If you’re a PC user, finding your way around in the new interface can be a challenge. Enroll in Using Mac OS X for Windows Users to learn the basics of the OS X interface, from the Dock to features like Spotlight.
From here, installing XCode is simple. Open the App Store application from the dock and type XCode into the search bar. You might need to reenter your account details, or enter them for the first time if you didn’t do so during Mac OS X configuration.
Navigate to the XCode app and click Install Now to download it. If you don’t have an Apple account, you’ll need to create one in order to download the XCode toolset for your virtual machine.
XCode is quite a large application, and downloading it could take anywhere from a minute to several hours, depending on your Internet connection speed. Once your download is finished, open Applications and click XCode to launch the installer.

Once the installation process is complete, you’ll be able to use XCode within your virtual machine to program apps for Mac OS or iOS. You can also download other Mac apps to use on your virtual machine, although they may not run smoothly.

It is undeniable that open source technology is widely use in business. Companies who lead the trend in IT field, such as Google and Microsoft, accept and promote using open source software. Partnerships with companies such as MongoDB, Redis Labs, Neo4j, and Confluent of Google Cloud are good examples of this.
Red Hat, the originator of linux, the open source company, firstly launched an investigation into the “The State of Enterprise Open Source” and released the investigation report on April 16, 2019. This report is a result of interviews with 950 IT pioneers around the world. The survey areas include the United States, the United Kingdom, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific region, aiming to understand corporate open source profiles in different geographic regions.
Does the company believe that open source is of strategic significance? This is the question that Red Hat first raised and most wanted to understand. The survey results show that the vast majority of 950 respondents believe that open source is of strategic importance to the company's overall infrastructure software strategy. Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst said at the beginning of the survey report, “The most exciting technological innovation that has occurred in this era is taking shape in the open source community.”
Up to now, the investigation has continued to the third round, and the results have been published on February 24, 2021.

Travelling the Latest Features of Google Cloud VMware Engine

Google recently had the exceptional chance to meet several of you at Google Cloud Next in San Francisco and VMware Explore in Las Vegas. A recurring theme from these discussions is the requirement for a cost-efficient, safe, and non-disruptive approach to the cloud, particularly for VMware-based workloads, which are frequently at the center of your IT infrastructure.
One of the quickest ways to lift and convert your current VMware estate into Google Cloud is with the Google Cloud VMware Engine. With special features like a 4 nines uptime SLA in a single zone, 100 Gbps of dedicated east-west networking, native VPC integration, and more, VMware Engine is an enterprise-grade platform. This post summarizes recent and new features that will let you move your VMware workloads to a VMware platform that is built for the cloud and use them there.
Versatile new ve2 node platform
The ve2 node platform from VMware Engine will be available with a variety of customizable CPU and storage configurations, along with high memory, allowing users to optimize their TCO with the best configuration for their business. Ve2 nodes will handle huge cluster sizes of 32 nodes and 100+ node private clouds based on next-generation CPU (3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors with DDR4 RAM and all-NVMe storage. They will also keep up their 4 9’s SLA for uptime in a single zone. Stretched private clouds will also be offered for greater availability.
Google initial node type in this new family is called ve2-standard-128, and it comes with 25.6 TB of NVMe raw data storage and more than 2.7X the RAM (2048 GB), 1.8X the CPU (64 cores, 128 hyperthreaded cores), and 1.3X the storage compared to other nodes.
Added areas for greater reach
Google global reach has grown to 19 regions over the past year, with the most recent additions being Tel Aviv, Turin, Santiago, and Delhi.
Optimizing TCO for environments with a lot of storage
HCI designs have a constraint that Storage Only Nodes get over by allowing you to expand storage without having to pay for computing. This reduces TCO and greatly improves infrastructure optimization to better meet workload requirements. With the same 4 9’s of uptime SLA for the cluster, Storage Only Nodes offer a less expensive way to increase the storage capacity of a cluster without adding cores or memory.
In response to storage-intensive situations, recent enhancements also include support for Google Cloud Filestore as datastores and Google NetApp Cloud Volumes for in-guest storage. As an NFS datastore with Google Cloud VMware Engine, Filestore High Scale and Filestore Enterprise have received VMware certification. Infrastructure as Code automation for private cloud provisioning operations is made possible by recently provided Terraform support for PC CRUD operations.
The VMware networking design and experience in VMware Engine are becoming even more straightforward as a result of networking advancements. It dramatically simplifies the process of creating a linked VMware Private Cloud while supporting a variety of networking topologies with zero-config VPC peering during private cloud creation and extending the restrictions on the number of peerings allowed. Enterprise demands will also be met in a straightforward and elegant way with the addition of native Cloud DNS functionality for bi-directional DNS resolution for both administration and workload resolution.
Users will be able to programmatically manage their Google Cloud VMware Engine environments with more functionality delivered via Google Cloud API and CLI, including API/CLI functions for managing the new networking model, network peering, external access rules and external IP service, consumer DNS, and more.
Customers who use the full Google cloud console experience for GCVE may manage their VMware Engine environments without having to open another tab. Additionally, you would use the log explorer to view logs.
Increasing control and transparency to improve security
New security features have been implemented to VMware Engine during the past few months.
Ability to integrate our platform with fine-grained (per-action) access control for activities made using the API or CLI. In addition to basic roles, you can choose from preset roles and custom roles. These predefined or custom roles have more precise permissions to carry out particular tasks that only pertain to VMware Engine. You may control access control more easily and adaptably in this way. The same rules will apply when using the console once it is made available.
To lower the danger of data exfiltration, you can build a security boundary for your VMware Engine resources using VPC Service Controls. The service boundary restricts the exporting and importing of resources and the data they are associated with outside of the perimeter that has been set. You may now attach VMware Engine services to a fresh or pre-existing VPC Service Controls perimeter thanks to VMware Engine’s support for a VPC Service Controls guided opt-in and policy export.
Support for ESXi log forwarding and the activation of auditable processes with client-controlled access elevation on customer workloads increase system transparency.

Austin: the hub of the American Tech in full steam
More than a month after Amazon’s thundering abandonment of its famous New York HQ2, Jeff Bezos’ group will expand to the Texas capital Austin. According to the Austin Statesman, the e-commerce giant will create nearly 800 jobs in its technology hub in the city. The new positions, which are expected to focus on software and hardware engineering, scientific research and cloud computing, will be added to the more than 6,600 jobs created by Amazon.
A thousand of these positions have been created over the past four years, said Tery Leeper, general manager of Amazon’s Tech Hub in Austin. He also assured that Amazon’s plan to expand its operations in Austin had been underway for several years and was not influenced by the cancellation of its HQ2 in New York in mid-February. It should be noted that the Texas capital was on the shortlist of 20 potential cities for the group’s second headquarters, before being ruled out for the (temporary) benefit of New York, and Arlington, Virginia. The group should not benefit from any financial advantages for this extension, one of the points of tension that derailed the New York case.
Festival Tech, Silicon Hills
Austin maintains its image as an American Tech hub with the South by South West, its annual festival that has been mixing music, cinema, and technology since 1987. The 2018 edition brought together a total of nearly 309,000 people. An event that has undoubtedly contributed over the years to the establishment in the city of companies such as Facebook, Google, Samsung, Dell, Walmart or Comcast, which have opened main offices or technology hubs. Silicon Hills, the technology cluster of companies in the Austin metropolitan area, also hosts offices of Advanced Micro Devices, ARM Holdings, Cisco, eBay, ESO, IBM, Indeed, Intel, Silicon Labs, Texas Instruments, Oracle Corporation, and VMWare.
There is no doubt that Amazon is looking to take advantage of the city’s technological dynamics. Its Tech Hub in Austin is one of the group’s 17 North American Tech Hubs, a network of development centers also located in Seattle and Virginia. To support these new jobs in the Texas capital, Amazon will expand into new 44,000 square meter offices that should be completed by 2020.

Mr. Leeper highlighted “a strong pool of technical talent” in Austin, as well as a “dynamic quality of life” and a “vibrant city.” The city’s population, which also hosts the headquarters of Whole Foods Market, an organic supermarket chain acquired by Amazon in 2017 for $13.7 billion, is gradually approaching the million mark. But its metropolitan region, which includes five counties, has more than two million.
Amazon’s decision to expand to Austin reflects the growing appeal of technology companies to the Texas capital. In December, Apple announced a $1 billion investment to open a new campus in Austin. It should house 5,000 initial employees and will eventually be able to accommodate up to 15,000 employees. The site, located almost one kilometer from the existing apple brand premises in the city, is also intended for engineering centers, but also R&D, finance, sales and customer relations. Apple, which has been present in the town since 1992, had until then employed 7,000 people there. In 2016, the Cupertino firm opened its Parmer Campus there, with an investment of $282.5 million.
