JINJER's TATIANA SHMAILYUK Celebrates Seven Months Of Sobriety
Vocalist Tatiana Shmailyuk of Ukrainian modern metal frontrunners JINJER is celebrating seven months of sobriety.
On Saturday (July 15),the 36-year-old singer shared a new mirror selfie on Instagram and she captioned it: "#7monthssober today. Let's see how far I can get".
Last December, Tatiana spoke to Radioactive MikeZ, host of the 96.7 KCAL-FM program "Wired In The Empire", about how she met her husband, former SUICIDE SILENCE and current P.O.D. touring drummer Alex Lopez. She said: "I met him through Internet. Of course, he was a famous person in the heavy music industry. So I liked him. And then it kind of happened that they [SUICIDE SILENCE] invited us to be a support act for them in Bratislava, Slovakia back in 2017. So I was, like, 'Well, that's destiny.' We took a picture together after the show. And then we started chatting through Internet. It was not very consistent talk — once a month, once every three months, short [messages]. And then we were talking about us, JINJER, coming to the States, and at that time it seemed impossible to come here, because, oh my God. [Laughs] And a year after, in 2018 I think, we went to the United States supporting CRADLE OF FILTH. And he came to our show to say hi and stuff. And then here and there, that's how it happened. So I think I made it happen. [Laughs]"
When Radioactive MikeZ noted that she was the "aggressive one," Tatiana clarified: "Not aggressive, no. I just was more enthusiastic. You know what I mean. Sometimes women have to do the first step to get what we want. [Laughs]"
Tatiana also talked about what it was about Alex's appearance that first drew her to him. She said: "Yeah, I felt like he looks like me, but like a male version of me. We're both shorties, brown eyes, brown hairs. I love Mexican culture, and he's full-blown Mexican."
Asked how she likes living in Whittier, California, where she shares a home with Lopez, Tatiana said: "Well, I like it because it's in the middle of everything — 30 minutes to downtown L.A., 30 minutes to Laguna Beach, 30 minutes to another beach to another beach and another beach, and then an hour to Big Bear mountains. So it's the perfect location. But I don't go out much because, honestly, I didn't find anything to go out to. [Laughs] And I have a lot of work to do, so I'm just sitting there chilling in the house, enjoying the sun and hummingbirds flying here and there. So, [it's] pretty cool. I love California in general — it's a beautiful place. I don't think there's a big difference between [Whittier] and another small town somewhere in California."
JINJER will embark on its own headline tour following the band's support dates on DISTURBED's 2023 "Take Back Your Life" trek with fellow special guests BREAKING BENJAMIN. The headline trek kicks off on September 7 in Huntsville, Alabama, making stops across Canada and the U.S., including Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto and more before wrapping up in Vancouver on September 25. Several of the tour's stops are produced by Live Nation.
JINJER played its first live show since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on June 10, 2022 at last year's edition of the Greenfield Festival, which was held in Interlaken, Switzerland. The concert took place just days after it was announced that JINJER had been given permission from authorities to leave their war-torn nation and tour Europe as ambassadors of the country.

Between the lakes
There’s a town in Switzerland called Interlaken, meaning between the lakes.
It gets hoards of tourists annually and is home to many gaudy souvenier shops.
I got there hoping to catch views of the Jungfrau mountain and maybe even to take the train up it and the equally famous Eiger mountain.
Tumblr media
Alas it wasn’t to be as the clouds and rain came in
Tumblr media
and I was stuck in the town without much to do as I didn’t want to buy any souvenier cow bells,
Tumblr media
'Swiss Army' knives
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or overpriced unknown 'Swiss’ watches.
I did have a few Swiss moments in the town in spite of the weather. Walking alongside the greener than green river
Tumblr media
I heard a sound that confirmed I was in Switzerland, real cow bells, on cows.
Another day on a beach on Lake Brienz at 12 noon I hear one church bell in one direction ring out the hour.
Then a church in another direction starts off as well.
There’s no one around and I feel, yes, I’m in Switzerland.
After a couple of days with no sign of the weather improving I move on to the nearby little town of Leissigen, on the other lake, Lake Thun.
The hostel there is in a century old house, the former summer house of the inventor of Ovaltine, Albert Wander.
The house, complete with creaky floorboards and original fittings is a nice break from the uniformity and industrial style of many of the other Swiss Youth Hostel Association buildings.
The weather in Leissigen is no different from Interlaken, but it doesn’t have too many souvenier shops.
It doesn’t have any actually.
There isn’t anything going on a drizzly Sunday evening when I take a walk down the only street in town.
A hotel and a small restaurant look like they might be open, that’s about it.
The following morning there’s a Swiss family in the breakfast room. The husband tells me about his camping holiday in Ireland 10 or 15 years before.
After arriving in Dublin on a busy bank holiday weekend from the west of Ireland, he and a friend went in search of accommodation.
No accommodation was to be found.
He said a landlady’s face went white when he suggested to her that they might camp in a city park.
She told them to go to Dublin airport and sleep there instead.
I leave for Luzern the following day.

Aigle Castle - Aigle, Switzerland
Tumblr media
Our entire reason for visiting this location was to visit a castle, so here we are. Today we are going down to Aigle to visit the Aigle Castle (pictured above). We took the tram down and walked the short distance out to the castle. The little town of Aigle was practically deserted as we made our way through the streets. We passed this pictue-perfect church along the way:
Tumblr media
We arrived at the castle gate, purchased our tickets for a self-guided tour and off we went.
Tumblr media
The gang at the castle entrance.
Tumblr media
Some of the old wine barrels, made specifically to fit into this room. Notice the old barrel taps on the back wall.
The first part of the tour is an exhibit of old winery equipment - can’t tell you what all of these items did, but they were heavy and manually operated:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next part of the tour took us through different rooms, along with a wine museum/education area.
Tumblr media
Wine hall.
Tumblr media
Not sure why this door was shaped this way, perhaps it was just decorative.
Tumblr media
The floors and doorways were interesting and beautifully designed.
Tumblr media
Chair-back carving in one of the rooms.
There was a room full of old bottle labels from the Aigle winery. They had chests of drawers that you could open, each drawer had multiple old labels on display. Here are a few samples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was also a room for learning a bit about wine - aromas and colors, etc. (pictured below):

We then roamed around the upper balcony of the castle, giving us great views of the surrounding area:

The courtyard, where we entered the castle.

Tumblr media
The terraced hillsides that surround Aigle, if you look closely at the clump of trees near the bottom center of the picture there is a lizard shaped out of the white rocks.

Some examples of the beautiful paintings on the castle walls are pictured below:

Post-castle group picture (I think Doug was dreaming about a cold beer!). Time to find some place to eat!
As I noted earlier, things were pretty quiet in Aigle. We struggled to find a place to eat, fortunately, Rachel and Tyler found a place that fit their needs. However, the Doug and Dan wanted a beer and wanted to sit outside - which was not an option at the place Rachel and Tyler picked. So they stayed there to get their food and we wandered back to a little pub we had seen earlier. I grabbed a table outside and the guys went in to order. It took them a while and when they came back out, they said “We ordered, but we aren’t exactly sure what we are going to get!” The staff did not speak English and we did not speak French/German, but the guys thought they had ordered beers and a couple of pizza-like dishes. We all had to laugh when 4 beers were delivered to our table and 3 flammekueche - all of which were delicious! Rachel and Tyler arrived just in time for Tyler to enjoy that extra beer!

Beer and flammekueche.

One of the pretty, deserted streets of Aigle.

A very cool neighborhood in Aigle. The apartments were connected by wooden, covered walkways over the streets.

On our way back up to Leysin, the sun came out and we had a spectacular last view of the castle and the surrounding countryside from the tram. Tomorrow we head to Interlaken for a couple of days.
