Stressa to Wilderswil-
After some more Matt and Becca running, we had a delicious breakfast buffet at the hotel (we had been looking forward to it after mostly staying in rental apartments without breakfast thus far). Then took the kids back to the playground and lake to burn some energy before the next train ride. We then lugged our gear on the slight uphill back to the train station and boarded a train that turned out to be bound for Frankfurt, but would only take us as far as Spiez Switzerland. We rode through the alps up valleys and through some large tunnels while listening to An American urologist and interventional radiologist couple next to us give some American students college advice. We kept our mouths shut until the "fancy" doctors got off the train, then Becca chimed in with her advice as well. After a couple short hops on local trains we arrived in Interlaken west, just in time for a downpour to start! We caught the 105 bus as instructed to find our place, but noticed it seemed to have arrived early, the driver told us he was going to another town first then Wilderswil but we sat on the bus glad to have a dry place to hang out. We went on a brief tour of the suburb of Matten, before looping back to the train station, then setting out for Wilderswil, where we were staying. Ellen and Randy got off one stop before us for their nearby hotel and we found our airbnb with only slight difficulty. We were pleased to find one of the continuously running delicious cold drinking water fountains that they have all over Switzerland outside our place and the kids were excited to find snails all over in the grass of our yard due to the rain. Our place was great with a large living room dining room/very well stocked kitchen on the lower level and a bathroom and communal sleep area upstairs with 5 single beds and one double bed. After unpacking the kids did some exploring and were very excited to find a nearby park with a big slide built into the hill. Matt also thought it was cool that the park had a communal indoor building complete with fireplace. We then made dinner in (with dessert of sour worm flavored popsicles!) and headed to bed tired after 2 big travel days but excited for some Swiss exploring in the days to come.

Between the lakes
There’s a town in Switzerland called Interlaken, meaning between the lakes.
It gets hoards of tourists annually and is home to many gaudy souvenier shops.
I got there hoping to catch views of the Jungfrau mountain and maybe even to take the train up it and the equally famous Eiger mountain.
Tumblr media
Alas it wasn’t to be as the clouds and rain came in
Tumblr media
and I was stuck in the town without much to do as I didn’t want to buy any souvenier cow bells,
Tumblr media
'Swiss Army' knives
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or overpriced unknown 'Swiss’ watches.
I did have a few Swiss moments in the town in spite of the weather. Walking alongside the greener than green river
Tumblr media
I heard a sound that confirmed I was in Switzerland, real cow bells, on cows.
Another day on a beach on Lake Brienz at 12 noon I hear one church bell in one direction ring out the hour.
Then a church in another direction starts off as well.
There’s no one around and I feel, yes, I’m in Switzerland.
After a couple of days with no sign of the weather improving I move on to the nearby little town of Leissigen, on the other lake, Lake Thun.
The hostel there is in a century old house, the former summer house of the inventor of Ovaltine, Albert Wander.
The house, complete with creaky floorboards and original fittings is a nice break from the uniformity and industrial style of many of the other Swiss Youth Hostel Association buildings.
The weather in Leissigen is no different from Interlaken, but it doesn’t have too many souvenier shops.
It doesn’t have any actually.
There isn’t anything going on a drizzly Sunday evening when I take a walk down the only street in town.
A hotel and a small restaurant look like they might be open, that’s about it.
The following morning there’s a Swiss family in the breakfast room. The husband tells me about his camping holiday in Ireland 10 or 15 years before.
After arriving in Dublin on a busy bank holiday weekend from the west of Ireland, he and a friend went in search of accommodation.
No accommodation was to be found.
He said a landlady’s face went white when he suggested to her that they might camp in a city park.
She told them to go to Dublin airport and sleep there instead.
I leave for Luzern the following day.

A celebrity sighting on Seneca Lake
By Jonathan Monfiletto
Tumblr media
Seneca Lake drew the Public Universal Friend and their followers to settle what is now Yates County and led the Society of Universal Friends to become the first permanent, non-native group of people to establish a community west of the modern-day Utica-Rome area. And ever since then, the Finger Lakes region has attracted people of all kinds for a variety of reasons; in particular, celebrities of different types and sizes have found refuge in waterfront properties along the 11 lakes.
I am well aware of all this, of course, especially the celebrity thing. I have heard the tales of Rod Serling and his family staying in their cottage on Cayuga Lake and visiting the nearby village of Interlaken, and I recall – from my days as a weekly newspaper editor – the stir created in the community by reports that Derek Jeter had purchased a mansion on Skaneateles Lake. Then, there are the many well-known people, again of different types and sizes, who are well-known locally for their residences, both permanent and season, around the region and along the lakes.
Yes, I am well aware of all this; however, I was not prepared when someone called asking me to find information about Crystal Eastman and her whereabouts in Yates County history. OK, I now know a little more about who Eastman was, which I will get to very soon, but at that point I had never heard of her. I assumed she was some sort of a relative of the woman calling, and the woman was looking for more information about her relative. Unfortunately, as I told the woman, I found little evidence that connected Eastman to Yates County. Searching our database of digitized newspapers, I uncovered just 10 mentions of Eastman in Yates County newspapers, mostly from the personals sections.
However, searching the NYS Historic Newspapers website (www.nyshistoricnewspapers.org – a wonderful resource for any genealogical and topical research within the context of New York history), I uncovered more information about Eastman and realized just what a celebrity she was in her day – quite a stalwart in the labor rights and women’s rights movements in the first quarter of the 20th century. It also appears she wasn’t from Yates County but did hail from elsewhere in the region, having grown up in Canandaigua and Elmira and then being buried in Canandaigua in her family plot upon her death.
Yet, a few of the references to Eastman in the Yates County newspapers read like reports of a celebrity sighting in the area, while others do account for her noteworthy professional career. Her biographies on Wikipedia and Find-A-Grave describe her as an antimilitarist, feminist, socialist, and journalist, having earned her law degree from New York University, received her master’s degree in sociology from Columbia University, and graduated from Vassar College in 1903. Both biographies note her roles within the fights for women’s suffrage and labor justice, both as an outsider and an insider (for example, she served on a New York State commission on employer’s liability and industrial accidents and drafted the first worker’s compensation law in this capacity). Meanwhile, her mentions in Yates County newspapers highlight her visits to the area – perhaps to see relatives and stay at their cottages.
An item under a column titled “Glenora” in the August 4, 1909 edition of the Dundee Observer notes, “Miss Crystal Eastman is spending her vacation at the Eastman cottage,” indicating she was related to the Yates County branch of the Eastman family. On September 5, the newspaper reported Eastman had returned to New York City. It is interesting to look at other newspapers to see what else was going on in Eastman’s life around the time of this excursion to Seneca Lake. In December 1908, she was admitted to the bar as a practicing lawyer with two other women in a class of 134 students. In May 1909, she spoke at a meeting of the Woman’s Trade Union League about her recent study of cases of 500 men killed in industrial accidents. Calling the federal employers’ liability laws “painfully inadequate,” she noted she found little provision made for the families of these men – putting the United States on par with Russia in this regard, she said. The next month, the New York governor appointed her to a committee to study employers’ liability and the causes and effects of unemployment in the state. The month after she returned from Glenora, she appeared as a speaker at the Greater New York Woman Suffrage Convention at Carnegie Hall. In March 1910, she testified – along with other notable people on either side of the women’s suffrage question – at a hearing of the New York Legislature on whether to give women the right to vote statewide.
The April 26, 1911 edition of the Yates County Chronicle and the April 28, 1911 edition of the Rushville Chronicle carried identical announcements of Eastman’s engagement to her first husband, Wallace Benedict, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Listing Eastman as of Elmira, these reports seem to show Yates County residents would have been interested in the whereabouts of this relatively local person. Around this time, she continued to advocate for fair labor laws and practices – such as a nine-hour workday for women – through her work with New York State. After her marriage, it appears she moved to her husband’s home state and championed the cause of women’s suffrage there.
On March 3, 1913 – as reported locally in the Penn Yan Democrat – Eastman took part in the Woman Suffrage Procession as one of four horsewomen forming a relay into Washington, D.C. to herald the progress of the procession. That October, she was added to the staff of the Federal Labor Commission and continued to advocate for workers, women, and working women. This included, according to the June 2, 1915 edition of the Penn Yan Express, a stint in charge of the saleswomen’s bureau for the Maxwell Motor Company as the automobile manufacturer sought to employ women to sell its cars to other women.
Around this time, she also took at least two more trips to Glenora – first as Mrs. Crystal Eastman Benedict, of Milwaukee, according to the June 30, 1915 edition of the Dundee Observer and then, after her divorce and remarriage, as Mrs. Crystal Eastman Fuller, of New York, according the newspaper’s August 8, 1918 issue. Interestingly, newspapers in the intervening years highlight Eastman’s denial of alimony from her first husband as her way of asserting her independence and self-sufficiency. She felt women should show their ability to support themselves by rejecting assistance from their ex-husbands. At the same time, as the Great War broke out in Europe and eventually the United States joined the conflict, Eastman became involved in the Women’s Peace Party and its activities and events. The group opposed that war and any war or militaristic preparations for war.
Of course, there is much more – and always more – to say about Eastman’s life, times, and work, as I have discovered in my brief research of her. For example, she was recently celebrated locally for her role in co-authoring the Equal Rights Amendment. This is just a glimpse of her through the lens of Yates County newspaper coverage, with a celebrity sighting on Seneca Lake.

Wilderswill to Albert Heim Hütte
Becca motivated early for a final hike/trail run in our awesome surrounds while Matt lazed about and tried to get kids to eat leftover food (bacon was easy, other foods harder). We were low on milk so he also made a big sacrifice and instead had his morning espresso with the leftover ice cream we needed to get rid of (and a delicious affogato it was). We eventually got everyone packed and closed up shop at our awesome Wilderswil airbnb and set out on a journey with at least 5 separate fairly closely timed connections with limited alternative options that had Matt nervous as he had planned it and didn’t want to let the fam down. Step 1 went smoothly as our bus arrived on time and conveyed us to Interlaken west on schedule, arriving at 9:30 AM. We then had only a short line at the ticket counter to use the bag transfer service (for only 12 CHF per bag, Swiss rail (SBB) will transfer your bag to any other railway station in the country so long as you give then 48 hours to do this). This was perfect for us as we had 2 nights of huts, so we had consolidated all we needed for 2 days into the twins’ two hiking packs and made Oli’s bag the snack bag, then crammed all our remaining possessions into Matt, Becca and Emily’s bags, which we checked to pick up in Zurich 2 days later (hopefully it works!). The first train arrived on time but departed a few min late due to people being slow loading bags on, but we made it the one top to Spiez and smoothly transferred to our next train where we had the option to transfer either in Visp with a shorter time window but less walking or Brig with more walking but also more time. We opted for Visp and ended up making the transfer easily and also being the only people on the train at first (it eventually got sort of full at brig). this was a slow local train to Andermatt where you could pull down the windows to open them and everyone was doing that as it was super hot, but this made it very loud in going through tunnels as the sqeualing of the wheels was reflected back into the train. We eventually made it to Oberwald with a few minutes to spare. Then after Matt briefly panicked when the station was under construction, found the bus waiting for us at an alternate stop and got on that, we then rode for 3 stops and made our final transfer of the day again (in Gletsch) smoothly, again with the new bus waiting right where it should be several minutes early. This bus took us over the famous Furka pass location for movie car chases and was fairly exciting. Both busses had clown horns of sorts that they would blast before going around switchbacks and henry correctly described the sound as “dad messing up playing the saxophone”. We arrived at our goal stop outside the remote Tiefenbach hotel right on schedule. Matt again found himself thanking the swiss transport gods who helped us smoothly transfer from bus to train to train to train to bus to bus all well organized and in sync (not to mention the cheap/easy bag drop and transfer to zurich!)

Day 20 - June 11, 2023: Zermatt to Interlaken
I woke up early in the morning to an absolutely gorgeous day in Zermatt. Not a cloud in the sky. I wanted to do one last load of laundry for the trip and I wanted to get the clothes in at 7am when the washers opened before anyone else. The entire hostel is sharing one washer and dryer so it’s nearly impossible to get the machine, especially with so many families staying.
I threw my clothes in the washer and went down the the scenic viewpoint to catch some completely clear views of the Matterhorn. Not a cloud in the sky to obstruct it. Only problem was the sun wasn’t high enough in the sky to light up the valley yet for a good photo. It was still beautiful though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made an executive decision that I needed to do Matterhorn Glacier Paradise before I left. I considered trying to squeeze in a trip to Randa for the suspension bridge but I figured it would be too much. I ended up being completely right. I had breakfast, finished my laundry, packed up, and checked out. Luggage storage was limited but the lady at the front desk let me store my luggage in a locker in the ski room, which was just fine. Everything is unlocked for the most part in Switzerland so that’s very helpful with limited reception. It’s a very safe place and you need money to stay in Zermatt so people generally don’t care to steal anyways. I still lock up my items to be safe though.
By the time I made it out of the hostel at 10am, the light clouds were coming so I had to hurry. You never know when the weather will change. There was construction going on at the ticket booth area so it was a bit confusing trying to get a ticket. There’s also a lot of stops, such as in Furi. I eventually figured it out with the ticket office and off I went! There’s 3 stops and switches on the way up. The first is in Furi for general hiking, the second is moving towards the top of the mountain, the third is at the top of Glacier Paradise. The views were spectacular! I even had a rare sighting of mountain goats on the mountain. I tried to get a video but I don’t think they can be seen. One of the best gondola rides I’ve ever done. It was unbelievable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glacier Paradise was truly incredible. I honestly thought it was more impressive than the top of the Gornergrat. You’re basically at the top of a glacier that you can walk around and can even ski or snowboard. I also watched an excursion of people climbing Breithorn. There’s also an ice palace dug into the glacier with ice sculptures and a slide. It was really incredible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I eventually made it back down to my hostel after stopping at the top for lunch. The altitude was over 12,000 feet and I was feeling it. I’ve learned from this trip that some food and hydration typically help. Soup with bread and alcohol-free beer worked tremendously well. I’m becoming a big fan of the alcohol-free beer when I’m dehydrated or dealing with altitude sickness. It works much better than mineral or vitamin water in my opinion. I caught a train around 2pm and slowly made my way to Interlaken.
Interlaken is another confusing place, there’s two stations for the city and I had to get off at West, not the main station of Ost. I’m staying in a private room at the hostel and the hostel a bit off the beaten path. I’ve heard it’s extremely difficult to find affordable housing in Interlaken because there’s so few hotels and Airbnb places to stay so the prices are generally outrageous and very limited. I really felt like I lucked out. I have a single bed, a sink in my room, and even an air conditioner. However, Europe, especially Switzerland, has cracked down on air conditioners and you can’t control the temperature setting. It’s stays around 73 degrees at all times.
I had dinner and walked around the town a bit. I went to an Italian restaurant that was unbelievably beautiful inside. The weather was nice though so I chose to sit outside instead. Google Sapori and you’ll be amazed by the inside of the place. Stunning. The town is overall quite nice but I was expecting both lakes to be closer in sight for some reason. I eventually got back and couldn’t get my blog to work so I chose to go to bed instead.

“Det är svårt att hitta en plats att inte gilla i Schweiz.” This means “It's tough to find a place not to like in Switzerland." Unquestionably one of the most alluring nations in the world, Switzerland has enchanted visitors with its breathtaking grandeur of the Alps mountains, sweeping valleys, glacial lakes, delectable chocolates, and picturesque locations. It is an accomplishment that Switzerland has been a peaceful nation for more than five hundred years. Many artists and thinkers sought sanctuary in this nation of peace during the wars and instability.
The Alps in the south, the Jura Mountains in the north, the bustling center of Geneva, and the calm areas of Bern are just a few of the scenic wonders that make Switzerland's towns famous. Additionally, the nation is well known for its premium goods including cheese, chocolate, and timepieces. Switzerland is a picturesque winter holiday location that is highly recommended for a visit, in addition to its natural beauty and extensive history. Here is a carefully picked list of the top spots to meander around on your next trip, no matter where you are in the nation or learning about a new city every week.
5 Best Cities In Switzerland
We've compiled a list of Switzerland's top destinations, from Interlaken to Geneva, that have long drawn tourists from around the globe.
Interlaken
Tumblr media
This tranquil metropolis is one of the most well-liked places to visit in Switzerland and is a picture-postcard location. The iconic mountains known as "Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau" make up the Interlaken tourism hub. The Interlaken region, one of the top cities in Switzerland, is known for adventure sports and offers a wide range of activities. Traveling through the tunnels is a voyage through both nature and history. Beautiful views of the surrounding Alps glacier world and the Eiger north face may be had from the two tunnels.
2. Zürich
Tumblr media
The thriving city is frequently referred to as "the Portal to the Alps" because of its proximity to the mountains. Zurich is well known for being efficient and clean in addition to being a famous tourist destination. In the past ten years, Zurich has become well-known for its cosmopolitan culture, nightlife, gastronomy, and some of the top restaurants in the world. All of Switzerland's major corporations, media outlets, and the nation's financial center are located in Zurich, the nation's financial center. Additionally, it is well known for its Swiss chocolates, which you can discover when visiting the city.
3. Geneva
Tumblr media
In the far southwest of Switzerland, in the Geneva Canton, is the city of Geneva. The Jura Mountains to the west and the French Alps to the east encircle the city, which is located on the shores of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), the largest body of water in the region. Mont Blanc can be seen beautifully from Geneva's downtown, which is roughly an hour away by automobile. The city, a commercial hub, is only two hours by plane from most locations in Europe.
4. Lausanne
Tumblr media
The capital of Vaud and the fourth-biggest city in Switzerland, Lausanne is located on the northeastern side of scenic Lake Geneva, the largest lake in western Europe. The city has a long and remarkable history that dates back to when the Romans lived there and camped nearby in Vidy. Since then, it has developed into a bustling tourist destination and the location of numerous important organizations, including the International Olympic Committee and the Federal Tribunal. Lausanne has several important institutions, including the Olympic Museum with its fascinating museum, the Olympic Center with its fascinating museum, and the Ouchy area with its vibrant cafes and well-known gourmet restaurants, in addition to its picturesque old town with its narrow alleys, boutiques, and cafe life.
5. Bern

From its medieval Old Town to urban swimming in the Aare River, from its city's variety of attractions to its government buildings and Parliament, Switzerland's frequently ignored capital features a wealth of modern and historic treasures. The government and legislative chambers of Switzerland are also located in this city. Bern, the intellectual hub of Switzerland, is a tranquil location to unwind and enjoy a leisurely vacation. The place is a favorite of serious intellectuals, especially Albert Einstein. Its cafés and charming neighborhoods are perfect for relaxing and learning from the modern masters. Interaction 23: Jungfraujoch
Sunday morning found us up bright and early to catch our bus. We had booked a day-trip to Jungfraujoch through Best of Switzerland Tours. Jungfraujoch translates as “maiden saddle,” and it is the glacier saddle connecting two peaks of the Bernese Alps: the Jungfrau and the Mönch. It’s 11,362 ft above sea level and referred to as “Top of Europe”.
I lost count of the number of tunnels we went through. Having lived my entire life in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, I’m no stranger to tunnels, but the Swiss have holes in their mountains like they do in their cheese. Our guide explained that they felt the work and expense of tunneling was worth it to maintain the beauty of their country’s landscape. I heartily agree.
The bus made a brief stop in Interlaken, a resort town built on a narrow stretch of valley between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. We had enough time to walk through the town and purchase some chocolate to tide us over until lunch.
Tumblr media
The cloud cover obscured the tops of the mountains. In clear weather, you would be able to see Jungfrau through the valley on the left, and that’s where the bus headed as we continued our journey.
As the bus moved through that pass, we started climbing on twisting roads. I was continually amazed at the way small villages were tucked away in the mountains, and small farms dotted the steep slopes. Our guide explained that there are a lot of small farms, each one having as few as 40 animals. In the winter, the farmers don’t have much farm work to do, so they supplement their income by taking jobs at ski resorts and restaurants.
Eventually, we reached Grindelwald where we boarded the Eiger Express aerial cableway—a gondola with seats for about 20 people. The 15-20 minute ride took us a fair way up the mountain to the Eiger Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. Then we switched to a cogwheel train that took us the rest of the way up through a tunnel that was excavated by 400 Italian men over 16 years.
Tumblr media
When we reached the Top of Europe complex, a combination of tunnels and buildings, and the highest train station in Europe, our guide first directed us to the elevator that took us up to the Sphinx observatory. It’s one of the highest observatories in the world and houses the Global Atmosphere Watch’s research stations.
Tumblr media
That’s Mönch behind us. The photos don’t do it justice.
It was literally freezing out there, so once we had our fill of photos, we went back inside and toured the ice palace that was carved out of the glacier.
Tumblr media
Then we got to walk out onto the glacier itself.
Tumblr media
This shot is looking back up at the Sphinx observatory with Mönch beyond it. The next shot is Jungfrau in the opposite direction.
Tumblr media
We really needed to warm up, and we had seen just about everything, so we finally decided to have a very late lunch… with a view!
Tumblr media
The trip back down to Grindelwald was by a series of cogwheel trains that provided fantastic views of the mountains, even if they were largely obscured by clouds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I couldn’t do anything about the reflections in the window, nor could I refrain from trying to capture the landscape as we descended. The bus ride back continued to provide breathtaking views.
Tumblr media
We got back to Zurich late enough that most of the restaurants were closed, so it wasn’t so bad that we ate lunch so late. What a day! I wish there had been less clouds to contend with, but if I never get to visit Switzerland again, I feel I got a decent summary view.
