Practice 1:
Assignment 2, Concept Art - Human and "Inhuman"
. Blog post 02
Here are some sketch analyses based on the interesting design points summarised in the previous blog.
A.Making the human organism grow like a plant
Tumblr media
B.Integration of diverse organisms
Tumblr media
C.Use of shape language
Tumblr media
D.The human figure and the Uncanny valley
Transformation process between human and inhuman
Tumblr media
I'll be applying these interesting design points to my concept design.
My final design was inspired by the horrific creatures of the Cthulhu novel "The Shadow over Innsmouth" that were mutated by the local humans. These creatures are a combination of human and sea life.
My character has a graphic representation of the letter D, emphasising the tension of the character, with the two main design centres being the shoulders and the head, next to which I have placed directional 'octopus tentacles'.
shape language:
Tumblr media
The character's toes are  tangled together, giving it a twisted and awkward look.
final:

This is all for now, thanks for reading.

An overview of the work of illustrator and designer Milton Glaser during the 1960s and 70s
From 1954, when he co-founded the legendary Push Pin Studios, to the late ’70s, Milton Glaser was one of the most celebrated graphic designers of his day, whose work graced countless book and album covers, posters, magazine covers, and advertisements, both famous and little-known. Glaser largely defined the international visual style for illustration, advertising, and typeface design and interest in his legacy continues unabated, with modern creatives acknowledging his influence; for example, in 2014 Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner enlisted Glaser to design the ad campaign and branding for the show’s final season.
His renowned work garnered solo exhibitions at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Creator of the iconic 'I ♥ NY' logo and cofounder of New York magazine, Glaser received numerous accolades and lifetime achievement awards. Across thousands of works across all print media, he invented a graphic language of bright, flat color, drawing and collage, imbued with wit. This collection of work from Glaser’s Pop period features hundreds of examples of his design that have not been seen since their original publication, demonstrating the graphic revolution that transformed design and popular culture.

the psycho duke and i - play-human & ianna kim
(i really wish this one had a more, ah, elegant title because i need you to walk with me here)
cw: stalking, familial abuse
a young woman wakes up in a book as the neglected sister of the heroine who will be kidnapped by a dangerous foreign duke during the war, and resolves that being kidnapped in her place would be better than continuing to live with her abusive family
the couple: for him, it’s destiny; for her, it’s out of the frying pan, into the fire. obsessive ml enjoyers this one is all yours. she has a fearless, blasé attitude about her situation that contrasts nicely with his intensity.
story & setting: it’s an industrial revolution/late 19th c. noir thriller about politics, lost royalty, and the looming threat of world warfare. due to her desire to escape via the kidnapping, she becomes attached to him and is dragged into the centre of an international power struggle. it is so much more than just “wuh-oh, i’m engaged to a yandere?!” and i feel bonkers talking about it
the art: i think the cover doesn’t do justice to the incredible Vibes. the colour palette is dark and oppressively muted to match the dire political state, and the composition reminds me of graphic novels at times. the characters are fragile, sketchy, and almost alien. it wouldn’t be the same story without it

Reports from organisations such as UNHCR, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, journalistic investigations, and numerous testimonies from the victims themselves tell of torture, rape and threats in the detention centres of Libya, a country with which Italy has made agreements to control departures; extremely degrading conditions in camps in Greece and Bosnia, where overcrowding, lack of medical care and assistance put the lives of the most vulnerable at risk; the disproportionate use of force and repeated incidents of actual torture by the Croatian police against asylum seekers at the borders with Serbia and Bosnia; situations of illegal detention of migrants in several EU or EU-funded countries, violent rejections along all borders of Europe, and de facto suspension of the right to seek asylum.
