Ok but something with Into the Kaiverse where Smith still ends up befriending the ninja as a civilian and then we get a scene like-
Lloyd keeps his gaze low as he walks through the city. The fewer people that notice him, the better. He doesn’t need to get the attention of another person with a vendetta against his dad.
For a brief moment, he glances up, just to make sure that he’s going in the right direction- but then he notices someone there that he’d be happy to talk to.
“Smith!” He calls, half-jogging over to him.
Instantly, Smith is staring at him- he thinks, anyway. The bulky sunglasses make it kind of hard to tell.
Smith tilts his head slightly, an unreadable expression on his face. He cocks an eyebrow, and Lloyd feels some of his excitement fading.
“It- it’s me. It’s Lloyd.” He can feel his smile dropping as he waits for a response. Does Smith not recognize him? What-
“Oh!” Smith stands up a little straighter, and Lloyd feels an odd chill go down his spine for reasons he can’t quite explain.
“Lloyd,” he repeats, a tone that the blond can’t quite identify in his voice.
“Yeah,” Lloyd nods, feeling a wave of relief hit him at the recognition. But then he frowns, a new thought hitting him. “Uh, are you okay? You look really pale.”
Smith looks down at himself for a moment before returning his gaze to Lloyd. He opens his mouth, looking like he’s going to say something- but then a new voice speaks up.
“Lloyd! Hey!”
Frowning, Lloyd turns to look at the speaker, because the voice sounds familiar, but that wouldn’t make any sense, because-
Smith comes up to him.
Smith.
Who’s already standing right in front of him.
Flinching, Lloyd takes a step back, gaze flickering between the two. What the heck? How can there be two-
Smith- the new one- stops in his tracks as he looks at the one in sunglasses.
The first one freezes too, and Lloyd feels an odd tension rippling between them as they both stare at each other.
It stretches on for a few moments, and Lloyd quickly decides to speak up.
With a nervous laugh, he backs away from the guy in sunglasses. “Heh, sorry. I- I mistook you for my friend.”
Not-Smith tilts his head again. “What a funny mix up,” he smiles. But… there’s something off about it. Lloyd can’t quite put his finger on what, but something about him is just… uncanny.
“Ha, I guess it is.” Smith speaks through gritted teeth, and Lloyd almost flinches at the sudden tight grip he has on his shoulder.
“But the two of us were just leaving.”
There’s another spark of tension that flickers between them. “Oh? I’m sorry to hear that.” Not-Smith’s smile takes on a new quality that’s even more indecipherable than before. “I would’ve loved to stay and chat.”
Smith’s smile is clearly forced. “Yeah, well, maybe some other time. We’re kinda busy right now.”
Lloyd glances between the two of them again. Yeah, okay, the guy in sunglasses seems a little weird, but to be honest, their entire friend group looks like that from the outside. And the guy hadn’t seemed upset when Lloyd introduced himself, so… maybe he’s not all that bad?
He glances at Smith for a moment before he speaks. “Well, I don’t think we’re actually all that-”
The grip on his shoulder tightens to the point where it’s borderline painful. “We’re busy,” he repeats, voice firm. There’s no room for argument, and… wow. Smith looks intense. Even more than he does when he’s dealing with Chen. What-
“Goodbye.” Smith practically snarls the word out. Tugging on Lloyd to signal that he should follow, he walks away.
His eyes stay firmly pinned on the guy in sunglasses.
Lloyd quickly follows. Glancing back at the guy, he catches a glimpse of a cocky smirk before he turns away, adjusting the sunglasses for a moment as he heads off.
The moment he’s out of sight, Smith visibly relaxes. He quickly turns to Lloyd, concern that’s borderline panicked on his face as he looks him over. “Are you okay?” He demands.
Lloyd blinks. “Y- yeah?” He glances off to where he last saw the guy for a moment. “Why do you ask?” A sudden realization hits him, and Lloyd feels himself tense.
“Do you know him or something? Is he- is he dangerous?”
Alright, since Lloyd’s the green ninja, his version of dangerous is probably a lot different than Smith’s version, but it would definitely be better for him to know- especially if Smith is still at risk.
Smith hesitates for a few moments before he speaks. “Or something,” he settles on. “And… well. If you see him again, go find the others and give me a call, okay?” There’s still visible concern on his face as he glances back after where the guy was. “I don’t want you anywhere near him,” he admits.
“Why not?”
Opening his mouth, Smith looks like he’s about to say something- but then he stops. After a moment, he breathes out a low breath and just pleads, “Lloyd, please just trust me on this, okay? You shouldn’t get too close to him.”
For a moment, Lloyd feels a protest forming- but then it dies in his throat as he sees the look Smith has.
He looks… scared. There’s so many emotions mixed, and none of them are good, but that’s the one that stands out the most.
Slowly, Lloyd nods. “Okay,” he agrees.
Visibly relaxing, Smith sighs. “Thank you,” he smiles, but the action is still kind of strained.
And Lloyd just… lets it go. This is clearly something he’s stressing about, and pushing it probably won’t help.
He’ll just have to ask Zane to look into it.
Or something even worse where Smith doesn’t show up and Bizarro Kai takes advantage of the confusion-
OOOOOOOO YESSSSSSSS THIS WAS SO COOL!!!!

That Time At Least Four Kais Met
So uhhh I was thinking about how cool a crossover between @sunnylighter ’s awesome fic series ‘The Grass is Always Greener’ and @kittydemon9000 ’s amazing fic ‘Same People But Not Really’ would be and then I realized that the Kaiverse AU exists so… uh…

——————————————————
This day had officially gone weird, and there was one thing Buddy thought he was familiar with, it was weird.
Buddy knew the multiverse existed. The proof of it was walking next to him on Garmadon’s volcanic island after one of their shared body-guarding classes. If you would have told him he’d be taking security classes from Lord Garmadon with an alternative version a week before Lil’Loyd had crash-landed in their realm, he would have first laughed and then offered you a hug to see if you were alright.
And yet, here he was.
Spike was just explaining to him that one move he hadn’t managed to figure out in class when a portal ripped into existence in front of them. Now, that wasn’t actually that uncommon; between the Ultra Dragon and Meowthra, travel between the two realms was remarkably smooth. The unusual part about this specific portal, however, was how much smaller it was compared to when one of the two giant creatures travelled.
A figure flew out of the portal, stumbling in the sand before regaining his balance He slammed into Spike, shoving Buddy’s counterpart out of the way with a sharp growl and taking off in a sprint in a random direction Buddy recognized as the way to the underwater glass tunnel connecting the volcano and Ninjago City.
Buddy stood there blinking as Spike yelled after the figure. For a moment he could have sworn the mysterious newcomer had looked a little like Spike, but with glowing red eyes and a paler, almost washed-out look to him.
But before he could get far in his train of thought, the portal rippled with new shapes, and Buddy’s brain promptly stuttered to a halt.
The first thing he recognized was a dragon- a big, red, freaking dragon that was NOT Ultra, with multiple people riding on their head and back. The second was that there was some kind of knight, and some kid that looked like the Kai-version of Lil’Loyd, and someone that vaguely resembled an Oni from that one book Buddy had read, and a guy with a headband and staff that Buddy had the strangest feeling he should recognize, and some bewildered guy that looked vastly different from the rest of the group and had some kind of… slug slinger? , and-
The dragon skidded to a halt, promptly launching one of the people off their head. The person catapulted into the sand- or, well, he would have, had Buddy not been standing in the way.
When the sand and dust cleared from his eyes, Buddy found himself staring into the eyes of… himself? And not in the ‘this guy is like Spike’ way, but in the ‘genuinely looks like me with the scar on the same side and hair styled like a really cool flame (NOT A BUNCH OF BANANAS, SERIOUSLY, NICK JAY?). The doppelgänger sat up with a groan, then looked down at Buddy. His face split with a wide smile.
“No way! Finally a Kai that looks like me and not Smith! You- are a Kai, right?”
Buddy nodded, too stunned to speak as he noticed that the rest of the entourage looked much too similar to him and Spike (mostly Spike, honestly) to be coincidence.
The doppel Buddy whooped and pumped one fist in the air. “Yes! I’m not the only one who knew this hairstyle was fire! Smith, hey Smith!” He craned his neck to look at another Spike-like Kai climbing off the dragon and hurrying over. “This realm’s Kai is like me!”
Smith- oh, like Kai Smith, clever- stared at Spike, who stared back. “Red? I think there might be two Kais in this realm.”
Red- for the red ninja, also clever- looked over at Spike and deflated in excitement slightly before shaking it off. “Still cool! They’re like us!” He turned back to Buddy. “Hi, I’m Kai Smith, so are most of them behind me, call me Red!”
Buddy sat up, starting to grin. He couldn’t help it, honestly. When it came to multiverse shenanigans, he’d learned to roll with it. “Kai Smith, but you can call me Buddy. That’s also Kai, but you can call him Spike.”
Red snorted. “The hair, right? Smith’s is the same.”
“It’s not that bad!” Spike protested. Smith just looked resigned.
Red helped Buddy up. “Sorry about crashing into you. It’s a little hard holding onto Drake’s - he’s another Kai, by the way- horns when he hits the breaks. Mer and MK have gotten flung off once or twice. Elias got flung on when we crashed through his dimension for a few seconds and accidentally dragged him along- he’s not exactly a Kai, but we had him fill out the checklist and it lines up.”
“The checklist?” Buddy asked, only really registering the last part of that sentence.
Smith was the one to speak up this time. “Some kind of connection to fire, spiky-ish hair, a found family, pushing aside your trauma and insecurities for the sake of protecting the people you care about- don’t scowl, Spike, we compartmentalize and you know it, it’s not healthy-“
“He’s a hypocrite,” Red whispered to Buddy. “He gives Smith Advice™️ to everyone but himself, which is ironic, considering he technically has by giving it to me. Trust me: you got a problem, Smith can fix it.”
Spike interrupted Smith’s lecture. “Moving on, other than the obvious, who are you all and why are you here?”
Smith shot him a brief glare- they would be returning to the Smith Talk™️ later- before explaining.
Buddy and Spike listened to a shortened story of how Smith had been wished into Red’s realm by his world’s Garmadon. The conniving lord had thought ahead about his attempts to escape and return home and had sent along an evil clone of Smith as a glorified babysitter, an arrangement neither Smith nor ‘Aki’ were happy with. When they got to that part of the story, Spike winced. “Yeah, I remember the clones. Ouch. Not a fun day of fights.”
Buddy looked at him with curiosity- he’d never had to deal with evil clones, and with the exception of Aki, neither had Red- and listened to the rest of the story. Apparently Aki had stolen Red’s world’s realm crystal and it had shattered during a fight, dragging Aki, Smith, and Red into another realm and allowing them to hop between dimensions. Smith and Red had been chasing Aki across the multiverse and gathering other Kais along the way, hence the small army.
Aki’s latest escapade had apparently led the group here, with Aki having run off after bumping into Spike.
“He’s headed toward the tunnels.” Buddy realized at the same time Spike said, “If he makes it to Ninjago City-“
A four-letter word that Buddy would not be repeating in front of Lil’oyd rolled over the beach. All heads turned toward where the glass tunnel entrance was.
Red and Smith both took a step back in sync. “What is that??”
Buddy smiled in relief and waved to the giant demon cat that padded out of the tunnel. “That’s Meowthra! She’s friendly as long as you don’t threaten either Lloyd or point the Ultimate Weapon at the city.”
Squirming in the hold of the big cat like some disgruntled kitten was the very angry original figure who had burst out of the portal. Aki, right, that’s what Smith had called him.
One of the other Kais (the normal looking one, like he had no elemental powers and instead had a- WAS THAT A GUN?- strapped to his belt) let out a long-suffering sigh. “I hate alternative dimensions.”
Meowthra plopped down on the beach next to the group, eyeing the dragon Kai (Drake, Buddy would later learn the name of) like she would Ultra. This squad (group? Gaggle? Flock?) of Kais better be ready to be kittened by her. It was easier once you got it through your skull that it was inevitable.
“Well, we don’t have to worry about him getting away for now,” Spike said. “Once Meowthra grabs you, there is no escape.”
The evil clone hanging above them continued to swear and kick up a hissyfit.
Red put one hand on his forehead to shade out the sun as he looked up. “What should we do with him?”
“How about you buttheads explain first?”
The entire group whirled around. Drake started growling, the normal-looking Kai flinched but ultimately looked tired and used to it, and the other Kais made various noises of anger and defence.
Lord Garmadon took a sip of his ‘World’s Worst Recently Remarried Dad’ mug and crossed two of his arms, unfazed. “One of you nerds better start fessing up before the press finds out and throws more fuel into the cloning theory fire.”
So yeah, all in all, a very weird day, if Buddy had to say so himself.

Wait but for Into the Kaiverse, you mentioned them collecting more Kais, right? What other Kais would they collect?
Because idk if it’s what you have in mind but my brain is screaming ‘AUS’ at the top of it’s lungs so it’s just like-
— Modern no power au Kai who lives a normal life and is horrified by all of this crazy stuff that’s suddenly happening
— That Dragon Kai au you have so Kai’s a literal dragon and everyone else is like ??????? while Dragon!Kai is trying to figure out why there’s ‘Hunter’ versions of him-
— Based off of the previous one, maybe some kind of Oni Kai au (because then they could clash while the other Kais freak out and have no idea what to do)
— Some au where Kai is/was turned evil (and is possibly keeping that a secret so he can use the others to take over ALL the Ninjagos)
— Medieval au where Kai’s like a knight or something (idk if it would be funnier for it to be fantasy where he knows about magic or normal where he doesn’t and is screaming “WITCHCRAFT” the whole time-)
Again I have no idea if that’s the kind of thing you’re thinking of but I’m just finding the idea of really confused and VERY different au versions Kai trying to work together hilarious-
And the one thing they all have in common is that they all love their little brother Lloyd
Okay so, short answer: Yes
Long answer: JHERSBFHJDRBGHJDBFH Y E S
okay so I actually was thinking of just. Mishmashing some of my AUs together, at the very least Merlopian Kai and Smith Swap Kai, but I like your idea a lot better.
Though quick idea for how I kinda wanted all of it to really start going. The short with Aki was sort of a prologue for the AU idea, that he was there in the world and wanted to make things difficult as well as wanting to find a way to essential stop any kind of realm travel, which as you can imagine would raise a few issues. At....some point during SPBNR Aki’ll end up getting his hands on this realm’s equivalent of a Realm Crystal or possibly another Relic but was stopped by Smith and Red(M!Kai), starting the whole issue. I am leaning toward another kind of relic, maybe something that binds to the user however since Aki is a clone it counts Smith, so maybe at some point they end up accidentally breaking it in half which allows Smith+Others to chase after Aki.
Anyway, onto what you’ve just brought up: I'll talk about them in order, and because why not let’s say that’s the order they get picked up in.
Love the idea of Modern Kai, assuming he still meets the team but through different circumstances. Maybe he still works in metal working, but yeah he’s very confused when someone looking like him only with paler skin and glowing eyes steps out of a freaking portal only to get tackled from behind by two other people who look weirdly like him. When he gets picked up they eventually decide to nickname him Nep, short for No Elemental Power
Next, I vote Merlopian and during the S7 time skip. This one actually happens because the three chased Aki, but lost him once they came through the portal. They decided to try and seek out this Universe’s ninja to see if they can help, which they do their best. All three of the Kai’s are like “You go into water?? Willingly????” They just call him Mer.
Next up, Dragon Kai, but with a slight twist. I was actually thinking of making an au of that au where Kai….never actually tries to go back to Ninjago and instead just vibes in the First Realm. He’s aware he’s different from the other dragons, but has no idea he used to be human, nor that he has a human family. So yeah. Lost Dragon.
ANYWAY HOW HE JOINS! When the Squad comes out of the portal, they at first think they’re in some kind of Post-Apocalyptic Type Universe which freaks them out a little bit, especially when they’re captured by the Hunters. However, similar to S9, Smith pulls a HTTYD and befriends the captive Fire Dragon, who is, you guessed it, this universe’s Kai. Once they find out he’s sentient, they end up throwing around names to call him and eventually they settle on Drake.
Next up, Oni Kai! This is technically also one of my AUs, but I’m just not finished with the info dump. Drake almost goes ballistic and they don’t know why for a while until he reveals himself as an Oni. He and Drake don’t get along very well but decide to put aside their differences since the fate of the Multiverse is at stake. They end up nicknaming him Willow, short for Will-o-wisp since his fire is….a little weird. Namely it’s purple and he can chose whether it burns people or not, and when he does want it to burn there ain’t nothing putting it out.
Next up, Smith Swap. Smol Kai go Brrrr and they all adopt him immediately. However, him joining the squad….didn’t happen in the best of ways. It was actually an accident. You see…..Aki may or may not have taken him hostage and stolen The Destiny’s Wish……y e a h.(his nickname is Ember because smol fire)
But then, they actually aren’t able to go after him immediately because while trying to get him back Smith got pretty hurt and Willow and Mer are tying to figure out their next move and then Drake had shifted back during the fight and is having a small identify crisis since his memories still aren’t completely back and it doesn’t help that Nya’s angry and Nep is freaking out and Red is trying desperately to hold them together and yeah it’s just a mess.
So it’s 2 weeks before they’re able to actually go anywhere, and that’s only because Smith ignored the doctor’s advice and only took the minimum rest period but the others all made him swear to take it easy and that they would handle all the fighting.
So they jump into the next universe to get him back, which is now the Medival one. For this one magic does exist but only a select few can do it. Medival Kai, who they eventually called Ruby because of reasons soon to be explained, is not aware he is one of these users.
However, let’s rewind a bit to when Ember and Aki first came here. Aki ends up causing quite a bit of issues since “hey this place is magic rich, they’re bound to have some ways to seal off all the realms” and thus ends up trying to kidnap several magic users of various kinds. Medival!Jay, Zane and Nya were actually among those captured.
Ofc, this extremely pisses off Ruby and starts taking steps to get them back. They know where his base is, but because Aki is coercing Ember by threatening the hostages(specifically Nya) there are some higher tech defenses which they don’t know how to counter. It also doesn’t help that Aki put vengestone everywhere so they can’t have magic users destroy the defenses.
That’s when the Kai’s show up.
Understandably the Medieval’s are suspicious, however they really want to get rid of this jerk. So they do and Smith is really upset he’s stuck on planning. It goes pretty well, they get the magic users, Ruby finds out “hey you have powers,” however Aki still gets away.
Now, this is getting really long, so I’ll do the next(and probably last) bit in another post

Shogun entered the *insert bounty dock thing* to see an identical version of himself arguing with the ninja.
It was Aki. Shogun barely thought about as he launched forward, tackling Aki to the ground.
"You," Shogun snarled, "we had a deal."
"That we do, but," Aki said ,clearly grinning under the mask," I haven't broken it. You just said not to hurt them."
"What are you getting at," Shogun asked, getting off of Aki and leveling him with a glare. The ninja watching the exchange were sure that glare could melt a wall.
"Oh I'm not getting at anything, I was just reeeeeallly bored."
Shogun stared trying not to burst at the seams.
"You. You were bored," Shogun said deceptively calmly. Shoguns hand was twitching towards his sword.
"Yeah man, it's kinda like a game," Aki said the grin turning into a feral smirk. Shogun drew his sword in the same second that Aki did and they leaped at each other, matching blow for blow. The ninja were watching in confused fascination as there was apparently a person that could match Shogun in combat.

into the kaiverse but aki gets colored contacts or smthg and gets in his ‘shogun’ gear to do stuff and convince the m ninja to not trust the real one anymore (possibly talking trash about lloyds civilian identity)
shogun becomes confused abt why they dont like him anymore and he asks what he did and they cant say its about lloyd bc he has a secret identity so they just glare & dont explain
it takes smith way too long to realize that it was aki and when he does he just loses it kdhdkjfk
OOOOOOO
OOOOOOO
THAT'D BE REALLY FUN AND CHAOTIC!!!!
And I have a very nice, very angsty idea that expands on that, if you don’t mind.
See, Aki is, for a lack of a better word, very very bored. Garmadon’s minions don’t give him any challenge, he can’t go picking fights with the ninja because of his agreement, and fighting Smith is just way too risky.
So he settles for a different past time. Toying with Smith’s life.
After all, his agreement was only that he wouldn’t hurt them. Never promised anything about, say, destroying Shogun’s relationship with them.
So yeah. Thus starts Aki occasionally posing as Shogun whenever he can and generally causing chaos.
Meanwhile Smith has no idea what’s going on. Suddenly the Ninja are much colder toward him, talking to him less and being less inviting during training sessions, but no matter how many times he asks they just won’t tell him what’s up.
And honestly it’s starts messing with him. He starts second guessing every interaction, very word he’s ever said to them, desperately trying to figure out where he went wrong and how it fix it.
But, one day Aki finally slips and while going on about something, mentions having first met Lloyd in the middle of the day when he bumped into him.
However, Lloyd knows that’s not true. On one hand, he could just be lying.
But on the other, and accounting in Shogun’s confusion….. they start to suspect something’s up.
Eventually they end up comming Shogun to instead of meeting them at the base to meet them at a warehouse. He’s very confused, but he does.
Imagine his surprise when he walks in....and sees them arguing with another Shogun.
You see, they actually told Aki to meet at the warehouse in person, however then they asked Shogun via the comms. Now both Shoguns are here.
And Shogun immediatly realizes what was happening this whole time and he. is. pissed.

Petition to name the evil clone Kai ‘Aki F. Aker’ (I tried to find a synonym or antnum for Smith and all I got was Iron so a word scramble is the best you’re gonna get. M!Kai also needs a nickname now for the Kaiverse
sjehrbgfhdfbhfb okay Smith would totally name him that out of sheer spite
M!Kai might end up being called Red, since that's his code name when working with his universe's ninja

Hey, I've been thinking...
Would anacondrai general!Kai jion the other Kai's un the Kaiverse? And if so.... How would he join?
Unfortunately no he won’t be joining however
If he were to join, he would probably be the most responsible. Dude had to take care of Ten children with not too much outside help. Also if they were just hanging around, he’d go on about them and their accomplishments since he’s a Very Proud Dad.

Y’know, if Aki happened to get really bored, he could reveal Smith’s identity by taking off his hood in front of the others
Yeah, but that would end his fun early, plus it would cue Smith in.
His idea of fun is playing for as long as he can, leading people on and misdirecting him, then when he starts getting bored, letting them figure it out and watching everything go up in flames(sometimes literally)

Ok I think I’m just too obsessed with the whole Bizarro thing but based off the last ask, consider:
Aki getting captured by Garmadon (kinda like how Shogun does in the normal spbnr) except he is having absolutely n o n e o f i t. He’s just as smart as Smith, so he also has the thought of how fighting right away won’t help, but as soon as he gets the chance-
He both can and will start an actual volcanic eruption, feeling especially gleeful over how it destroys all of Garmadon’s base and forces (and even some of Ninjago City in the distance).
Ok it’s after midnight where I am now sorry if I’ve been weird I’m going to sleep now shdjhfh
IDFHBVHJFDBGHF NO WAIT YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT-
Aki is Smith, just take away his morals and care for human(or other) life. And Smith's already Very Not Happy with Garmadon, so if Aki was there.....
Who knows, maybe it would even be enough for Garmadon to maybe possibly agree to a truce to take him down.....

Sudden thought: would Aki go find M!Garmadon? Would he tell them the ninja’s identities?? Would he work for M!Garmadon? Or would he try avoid working for him and maybe end up actually being magically forced to do it because the Megaweapon created him specifically to serve Garmadon-
There are so many possible things that could happen with him being there-
Aki doesn't end up going to M!Garmadon, most because there's enough difference between the two that Aki sees them as different people.
Aki actually thinks M!Garmadon is a massive joke, with his ocean themed everything and the way he prioritizes dramatics over actually taking over the city. He actually spends most Garmadon attacks fighting Generals just because he's looking for someone to fight
