On a scale of 1-10, how tragic is it to be greeted by the sight of your family having the time of their life with your perceived Replacement after you just crawled your way out of hell trying to get back to them?

Prompt 232
Once more thinkin of These Series of AU/Prompts, where the Class pulls a Tiamat. Becomes Giant Hydra Dragon. But with some inspiration from @radiance1's Blob King AUs. Specifically also the dragon ones.
Now, the nine of them are admittedly far older than they once were. Far older than most of the people outside the cage they were tricked into all those years before, exhaustion seeping into their bones as their ectoplasm was siphoned away.
Yet no matter how much the GIW drains away- if they're even called as such anymore- they never run out. If anything, at least from what they've noticed, unable to do much of anything else in this pit, this tank of green and red, they seem to be making more.
Their recollection of being separate, of having separate bodies have long since slipped away in exchange for keeping memories of their families and friends long gone now. Perhaps they're in the zone, as ghosts, but perhaps not.
Days feel like both seconds and years, words falling away as their Core hums as one. Sometimes a Blob ghost manages to find its way inside- the trap designed not to stop things from getting in, but to prevent them from leaving.
They always disappear whenever the ecto is taken away, not having enough to continue holding on to a physical form. But... the blobs don't stay gone. Their own ecto brings them back, tiny forms almost mimicking their own.
It's something to distract them, something to actually do besides growl at the figures beyond the barriers around them. The blobs don't speak, don't make more than squeaks, but it's something. Almost like dozens of toddlers floating around, becoming more and more draconic in shape with every siphon.
Do their captors realize, they wonder, how they've made them all stronger than they were even before? Do they realize what they've done, creating this loop of ever-growing power?
No, Star giggled, pink and gold scales shimmering as she bobbed her head in amusement, Paulina's darker purples following.
They don't know, Wes agreed, dark amusement echoed by both Sam and Dash, fangs flashing amidst the liquid. The trap would not be able to contain them for much longer, they all knew. They could feel it, how the siphon stuttered with every run.
It wouldn't be long now. They had waited three hundred years for the chance to escape- they could wait for a few days more.
...
Though they won't complain about an early prison break if those alarms are anything to go by.

The missing Arthurian knight - rediscovered in 2019
Well the title is a slight lie - the missing knight wasn't rediscovered in 2019, it was earlier than that, but he didn't became public until 2019.
Tumblr media
So what's this "missing knight" about? Well as the title says. There was a knight part of the Arthurian myth, and he had been missing ever since the Middle-Ages, and he was only recently rediscovered.
Or rather, to be exact - there was an Arthurian novel centered around a knight that existed and was a famous and well-known part of the Arthurian literature in the Middle-Ages, but that completely disappeared, and was forgotten by culture (as much popular culture as the scholarly one). Until very recently.
This rediscovered novel has been a hot topic of all Arthuriana fans in Europe for a few years now - and yet I do not see much talk about this onto this website, despite Tumblr being a big place for Arthurian fans?
So I will correct this by doing a series of posts about the subject. And this post will be the first one, the introduction post presenting to you "Ségurant, le chevalier au dragon" ; "Segurant, the knight of the dragon". A French medieval novel part of the Arthurian literature (hence the "chevalier au X" title structure - like Lancelot, the knight of the cart or Yvain the knight of the lion from Chrétien de Troyes), the reason this story was forgotten by all medievalist and literary scholars is - long story short - because it never existed in any full manuscript (at least none that survived to this day). It was a complete story yes, with even variations apparently, but that was cut into pieces and fragments inserted into various other manuscripts and texts (most notably various "Merlin's Prophecies").
The novel and the Knight of the Dragon were rediscovered through the work of Emanuele Arioli, who rediscovered a fragment of the story while looking at an old manuscript of a Merlin Prophecies, and then went on the hunt for the other fragments and pieces scattered around Europe, until he finally could compile the full story, that he then published in 2019, at the Belles Lettres publishing house, in 2019.
Arioli reconstructed the text, and translated it in both modern French and Italian for scholarly and professional editions (aka Honoré Champion in France, a reference for universities)...
Tumblr media
... But also for a more "all public, found in all libraries" edition - the famous 2019 edition at Les Belles Lettres.
Tumblr media
And not only that, but he also participated to both a comic book adaptation with Emiliano Tanzillo...
Tumblr media
... and an adaptation as an illustrated children novel!
Tumblr media
Finally, just a few weeks, the Franco-German channel Arte released a documentary about the reconstitution and content of this missing novel called "Le Chevalier au dragon: Le roman disparu de la Table Ronde". (The Knight of the Dragon - The missing novel of the Round Table). The full documentary is on Youtube in French for those that speak the language, here. And in German here for those who speak German.
Unfortunately there is no English version of the documentary that I know of, nor any English publications of the actual text - just French and Italian. But hey, I'll try to palliate to that by doing some English-speaking posts about this whole business!

anyone else feel like the thawfest episode of rob could've worked better w astrid and snotlout's conflict instead of hiccup?
like ik hiccup has his 'nerd gets a moment to level the playing field w his jock bully' thing but its lowkey painful that astrid gets nerfed. i'm sure she was champing at the bit to beat snotlout just as much as hiccup
instead she got to be hiccup's moral check + cheerleader, even though she's primed to be:
1. a 'lousy winner' (i'm certain in usual circumstances she would uphold viking honour or some such code but can you imagine how frustrating it would be to lose by a hair's breadth every year against snotlout?!) (this is not to diss him i'm just thinking of astrid's view of him)
2. easily capable of competing with him and getting a step-up with dragons introduced (seriously how did one boring loop win against a balance walk)
3. have a rivalry with snotlout (jorgenson v hofferson hatred)
4. emotionally intelligent enough to realise winning is less important than supporting her friend

What if, instead of engaging with the work in a normal manner, I made a self-indulgent AU that is not only a gigantic outlet for Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon references, but also something I'll only ever be able to make random doodles of and never write? Wouldn't that be fun?
And yes, this whole premise is mostly so I can give Hiccup, Heather, and my favorite villains cool outfits while they're stressing out over politics and wars and supernatural nonsense. No, I know no bounds.

Au where the ASL brothers somehow get stranded on an abandoned forest island and it’s a lord of the flies situation but not really where they just become half feral and rely on each others. Horrifying bonus points if it’s somehow the island Luffy trained on for two years. And they are just impossibly strong before either, a. Getting found by someone or b. Setting sail themselves and they bite every marine they meet.

In the Libber super hell au how does Kai find out that libber is jays mom
It’s canon that this fact is not common knowledge so is it just that In this au Jay told the others and they believed him even though he didn’t have proof.
And if Kai didn’t already know I’m wondering what happened for that to be brought up in a conversation
Did libber do something that reminded him of Jay and he pointed it out
Or did libber assume that the current lighting ninja was her kid and asked Kai about him
It just that Something like that seems like a sensitive topic I cant imagine it would be something she talks about casually
you are correct in assuming that jay hasn't told the others in this au! only nya, pixal, and zane know; nya knows from skybound and zane and pixal know from the ending of prime empire. jay doesn't actually mean to keep it a secret, he just forgot that the others don't know in this timeline and nya, zane, and pixal all assume it's a sensitive topic and so they don't bring it up.
once libber realises that kai is a part of the ninja, she assumes that kai knows her son as she can successfully predict that he would've been recruited by wu too if ray and maya's kid was. particularly since they're both elements of creation. in her years in superhell (sorry im going to keep calling the netherspace that), she's spent countless hours imagining the kind of person her son might grow up to be, hoping that he would be ok without her, and now she finally has the chance to get some answers and closure. she's not exactly going to pass the opportunity up.
for a moment, kai can't figure out who she's talking about since none of his teammates have a missing mother to his knowledge, and he only makes the connection that it's jay when libber prompts him about lightning powers. the following emotions are shock, then confusion, then embarrassment at every time he's labelled jay as the token guy-with-no-family-trauma (a title that jay was fine with accepting). after that, i do believe that he might hold a little anger on behalf of his brother, wanting libber to justify her abandoning jay and wondering why jay's biological father, who very much wasn't in superhell, wasn't there for him either.
kai possibly also uses libber to displace some of the emotions he felt about his own parents' return that he wasn't able to properly express at the time with wu's disappearance and the expectation that he would be joyful that they're back. this puts a slight strain on their dynamic at first, but libber quickly gains his trust.

"He hides the true reason behind their creation well. Our brothers don't see it nor does my father, but I do. I know he's questioned what happened to the 2nd and their legion. Those questions led him to learn many things apparently, so much so that he had these "Iron Dragons" created not just for siege and Frontline breaking but out of fear. Fear of the legions being turned onto him and his people. So he created Astartes meant to fight other Astartes. Learning in the war games we all took part in, learning various ways to combat his own allies, to fight his brothers if need be..." - Horus to Abbadon

Httyd AU
So! Ghosts are nowhere near an Unknown Threat.
In fact, Ghosts and Creatures of the Realms have been attacking the Human World, preforming Raids on Amity Park, and stealing valuable objects and human food for just as long as they have been around. And they have been around for a while.
They first came into the Human Realm centuries ago, and so far Humans have been able to adapt.
Ghost Hunters are some of the most respected members of the Community. There are many different groups of them, and of these Groups the Fenton Family has always been one of the most famous and well credited of the lot.
They have been Hunting Ghosts since the days of their Ancestor, Jackson Fenton-Nightingale, who was the first of their lineage to change from Witch Hunting to Ghost Hunting.
In the modern age, Jack Fenton and his wife Maddie Fenton are some of the most respected Hunters in Amity. They have captured and killed more Ghosts and Realms-Beasts than anybody in the History of their Family. They have pioneered the new age of Ecto-Tech, bringing better and more effective weapons to the masses. They have singlehandedly managed to contain the Ghost Threat to the State of Illinois, and Amity Park in general. They are truly some of the Greatest Heroes of the Era.
The same cannot be said for their son.
Daniel Fenton has always been, well, Lacking, when compared to his Family.
He didn't inherit his Father's natural Musculature, nor his Mothers Prowess in Martial Arts, and while he is definitely an extremely intelligent boy, he does not measure up to the Intellect that the other members of his Family often achieve.
Even his sister, Jasmine Fenton, shows more promise than he does, and she isn't even a Ghost Hunter. Instead she devoted her life to becoming a therapist who can help those who have been affected by Ghost Attacks.
But Danny? He has never really showed much promise. He is definitely eager to prove himself to his Parents, but he never manages to help out in the field. Most of the time he even makes it worse.
And for Danny? It's infuriating! He has spent all his life trying to live up to the legend of his Family, trying to become a worthy Son. But he never succeeds.
He has made Tons of Inventions to help defeat Ghosts, but they were all thrown out because they were Non-Lethal. They always said that any Ecto-Weapon worth the materials it's made out of should end the Ghost before it has a chance to escape, so capturing them without killing them would be worthless.
But he wants to prove that his efforts are not in vain, if not to his family, than to himself.
So one night, as a particularly nasty Ghost Attack is going on, he rushes outside with a Weapon of his own Design. It was a Stun Gun, designed to hit the Ghost with a Beam of Pure Paralyzing Energy that would render it Immobile for hours. It was slightly large and bulky, but it still worked. At least, theoretically it did. He hadn't had a chance to test the Stun Gun yet, hence his little adventure.
He ran to the edge of Town, and tried to find a Ghost worth capturing.
Blobs? No, they've been caught before. Catching one wouldn't earn him any praise.
Skeleton? Those are a single tier up from Blobs, and not by much at all. Definitely not.
Ecto-Pus? Maybe, but it wouldn't be too useful for learning anything since it can't speak.
Spirits? They are the manifestations of Human Emotion, stronger than most other types of Ghosts, and they are suspected to be Intelligent. That's a good choice, it would probably be the best choice.
But there was one better. An Ancient.
The Ancients were the Ghosts that had been around for Centuries, possibly Millenia. They are Ghosts that are so Old, they have developed true Intelligence. Nobody had ever managed to kill an Ancient, they were too strong. The Ancients are the most Deadly, most Powerful, most Dangerous of all Ghosts.
If Danny managed to Capture one? He would skyrocket to Fame! He would be able to sit at the Lunch Table with the A-Listers, the town would stop seeing him as a disappointment, and his Parents would be so Proud of him! They might even come out of the Lab outside of Ghost Attacks to spend time with him!
So, he sat at the edge of town, watching the Portal that had opened up about a Mile outside of the City. He needed to be ready, in case an Ancient showed up.
Hours passed, and he was getting sleepy, when it happened.
"Ancient!"
The scream of warning came from his Radio, tapped into the Ghost Watch Channel used to keep track of Ghost Movements during attacks.
He looked at the Invasion Portal, and saw it. It was Humanoid, about 7 ft Tall, wearing Dark Plated Armor, with a Flaming Green Sword at its hip. Trying to stare into it's Face felt like staring into an Abyssal Void, with 2 pinpricks of Red denoting where its Eyes would be. The same Red Eyes all Ghosts had.
"Retreat! Retreat! The Fright Knight has emerged from the Invasion Portal!" Came the warning from his Radio. In the distance to his right, he could see the few Hunters who had been keeping watch on the Portal run to the safety of the Town.
Shaking off his fear, Danny rushed to his Target.
The Fright Knight was the most Feared of the Ancients, nobody had ever survived an encounter with it. There were even Rumors that it was the Leader of the Ghost Attacks, the coordinator.
And Danny knew that his Stun Gun wouldn't be enough to beat it. Not yet anyways.
So, instead of running directly to the Fright Knight, he ran to the small Open-Air Worksite that held his Parents' most Ambitious Creation. An Artificial Ghost Portal.
Years ago, his Parents had realized something. They couldn't stop the Invasion, because the Ghosts could never be cut off at the source. The Portal they used to enter the Human Realm was always a Natural One, it always closed after a few hours, so they had no chance of entering the "Ghost Zone" without immediately getting cut off from the Human World. Thus, they couldn't exterminate the Ghosts at the Source.
But what if they had a Stable Portal?
Then, the Humans could invade the Ghost Zone instead of the Ghosts invading the Human Realm. They would get an Edge in the Centuries old War.
But the Portal didn't work yet. They had been working on it for years at this point, but they had had absolutely no luck in making it functional. As an unintended consequence however, they realized that the Portal Frame was capable of generating Large Amounts of Energy, and it soon became the towns most Powerful Power Plant. It basically powered every home in the City, and powered the Shields that were put up above the Civilain Shelters during Ghost Attacks.
And Danny needed it.
His Stun Gun wasn't powerful enough to defeat the Fright Knight yet, but if he retrofitted it to draw on the immense power of the Portal Frame, it might be enough.
He rushed into the Open-Air Pavillion thay housed his Parents Portal Frame. It was an Immense Creation, semi-circular in shape but large enough that an entire Army could be comfortably Marxhed through.
He ran right to the center of the Device, pulling open a Panel in the middle of the Floor and fiddling around with the Wires for a minute.
It only took a short while before he had the Energy of the Portal Frame retrofitted to power his Stun Gun.
He raised the Weapon, and carefully aimed at the Fright Knight, still walking towards the Town.
He pulled the Trigger. And Everything went wrong.
The Gun didn't fire. Instead, he felt a rumble come from the Machine he was standing on, as lights began to light up on the edges of the Portal Frame. Somehow, he had accidentally rigged the Portal to attempt its activation Sequence when he tried to fire his Weapon.
Obviously, the Ring of activating lights had attracted the attention of the Fright Knight, and it had begun to move in bis direction.
In a panic he tried to fix his mistake. He moved around a few more wires, and tried again, and more lights turned on. He tried again, and suddenly a high pitched sound began to play around him.
He tried one more time, and help his heart leap with joy as his gun finally began to power up. He looked up to see where the Fright Knight was, and felt his elation drop in an instant when he noticed that it had already entered the Outdoor Lab Space.
The next few seconds felt like they took hours. He felt his heart stop as the Fright Knight began to rush forward. It was about to reach him.
Then, his Gun pinged to tell him they it was ready, and he pulled the trigger.
The world around him erupted in green Light as the beam from his Stun Gun fired out with much more force than it was ever intended to handle. The Beam of Light was so wide that it completely encompassed the Towering Fright Knight's form.
But at the same time as the Gun fired, the Portal finished it's attempted activation sequence. And the World turned green for a different reason.
Danny felt billions of volts run through his Body as the Portal activated, his screams being drowned out by the sound of Reality fraying at the seams as the Portal attempted to push through it.
But ultimately the Portal failed. It turned off, just as it was about to break through to the other side. The sudden burst of energy also seemed to affect the Stun Gun, as it blew up at the same moment the Portal turned off.
Danny was launched out of the Portal Frame, landing in the center of his Parents Outdoors Lab, unconscious.
It took nearly an hour before his Parents arrived, looking to investigate the sudden Portal Activation and Explosion. Whatever had happened caused a blackout throughout the entire Town, shutting off Ghost Shields and inciting panic throughout the City, meaning they had to wait hours before they could investigate.
They found Danny laying unconscious in their Lab, and called for someone to help him as they worked on getting Power back to the Town.
When he woke up, Danny was Reprimanded for his actions that night. Nobody believed him when he said that he had beaten the Fright Knight, and since communication went down with the Power, Nobody could confirm that the Fright Knight had actually been pushed back. It was far more likely that nobody had seen it after it entered the town, and it had left with the others when the Portal began to close.
But Danny knew what had happened, so the first chance he got, he escaped out into the woods surrounding Amity Park and began searching for his Target.
It took hours of searching, but eventually he found the Fright Knight, laying on it's side in the dirt.
Danny was elated at first, he had captured am Ancient! But then he took a closer look. He didn't know why, but for some reason he felt odd about the Ghost. He felt confusion, but not his own. Relief, but coming from somewhere else. Hope, but coming from Him. The Fright Knight.
In that moment, he didn't know why, but instead of dragging him back to the City or further restraining him, Danny pulled the Knight up into a sitting position, feeling it would be more comfortable like that.
He turned around for a moment to see if anybody was around, but when he turned back he was met with a terrifying sight. The Fright Knight was standing up, towering over Danny. He looked up to see it's face, and saw that it was glaring at him with an unrestrained rage.
Danny cried out when he was pushed to the ground, landing against a Rock, looking up in terror. The Knight took out his Sword, and before Danny could cry out in fear, it plunged the Sword down.
Into the Boulder next to Danny's head.
When he finally opened his eyes, the Knight was gone, leaving only the cracked rock next to his head and a sense of lingering terror.
In that moment, Danny only felt on things register in his Mind.
Where it's eyes always Green?
...
This got a little out of hand, but I hope you liked it.
The idea is that Ghosts have been attacking the Human Realm for Centuries, raiding the Villages to steal valuables and Human Food, terrorizing the world for years.
Hunters like the Fentons managed to contain them in Illinois, more specifically Amity Park.
Danny is Hiccup in this. He is the wimpy weak little kid that nobody respects because he doesn't live up to his Family Legend.
Fright Knight is Toothless, but instead of helping Danny learn how to ride Dragon, he helps him learn to use his newly found Ghost Powers. (Because I included the Portal scene for a reason, he became a Halfa and seeks out Frighty when he realizes hat he had Ghost Powers. He's kind of the only option after all)
If you didn't guess it, Pariah Dark is the Queen Dragon. He used his power as Ghost King to control every Ghost in the Zone, forcing them to raid the Human World and bring him offerings. He isn't obsessed with taking over the world, he is obsessed with being seen as a God, and Gods need to get Offerings.
When Danny hit Frighty with the Stun Gun, he knocked the Mind Control out of him and Frighty was freed.
From then on it would follow some similar story beats to Httyd, but also different.
Maybe the other Movie's could introduce other Characters? Maybe Freakshow is Viggo from the 2nd Movie?, or Vlad is Grimmle from the 3rd Movie? The Plots could fit as well.
If you want it to be DpxDc, you could say that the JLA thought the situation in Amity was handled and didn't think they needed to assist.
When they learn how bad it actually was they are freaked out. Especially since this was a Centuries Old Conflict that has been happening since before America was even founded.
What do you think?

One of the many, many dragon AUs lurking in my docs.
-----------------------------
Dick wakes up to pain.  The memory of pain, and the throbbing hyperawareness of too-sensitive skin, like he stayed too long in the sun.  He shifts, and his skin feels stiff, but it doesn’t prompt the shrieking agony that Dick remembers distantly, so he weakly pushes up on an elbow and blinks open his eyes.
Gleaming, golden light dances around him, glittering like he’s inside a jewel, and Dick is lying on fur so soft that it barely irritates his painful skin.  His clothes—well, that is a cause for alarm, he’s wearing what looks like a cotton shift and nothing else, not his boots or belt or pack in easy sight and—
Dick raises his head to take in the full enormity of where he is, and is unable to comprehend it before a blur of scales and claws slams into him.
There are claws raking across his skin, flashes of burning-throbbing-pain dancing up and down his chest, and he can’t breathe.  He only realizes he’s flat on his back when the dark scales filling his vision disappear, and he can see the cave’s shadowed ceiling.
There’s a low, rumbling growl cutting over familiar high-pitched squeaks, and it’s enough to make Dick snap upright again.
It’s the big dragon.  The orange-and-black one.  Incredibly, the massive cave only makes him look bigger, his scale dwarfing the piles of—of gold and jewels and trinkets and luxuries piled high around him.  He has a much, much tinier dragonet in each wingclaw—one orange and black, just like him, and the other mostly gray with a head of yellow-orange scales.
The third dragonet—all black, the one from the egg Dick rescued, scampers free from behind the bigger dragon’s legs and makes a beeline for Dick.  The large dragon’s growl sounds louder, but the dragonet plows into Dick—ow, ow, fuck that hurts—and Dick curls protectively around him before anything else can happen.
The big dragon’s eye narrows.  A puff of smoke comes from a nostril.  Dick clutches the pile of wriggling limbs tighter, and ignores how each movement sparks fresh pain in his trembling limbs.
The last time, he got flamed alive.  He’s not sure how he’s still breathing, why the skin down his arms is the pink of newly healed and not the black-white-cracked-red of dead.  He’s shaking so hard it feels like he’s been dumped in snow, his heart pounding in his ears, his body warring between the desire to run and get away from danger and the sheer, terrifying certainty that it won’t make a difference.
The two dragonets escape the big dragon as well and shoot for Dick, flying ungainly and essentially collapsing on top of him.  Dick ends up on his back again, biting through his lip to avoid shouting at the fresh wave of pain, but staying perfectly still as the dragonets crawl over him and curl on top of him.
They’ve left his face free and Dick can see the moment the big dragon appears into view and bends down.  Dick stops breathing, eyes screwed up, but at the lack of heat he opens them.  The dragon is close enough to touch.
:Enough: comes the snarling echo as the dragonets all hiss :Get off of him, now.:
He delicately catches a dragonet with a wingclaw before lifting them off of Dick.  The dragonet protests bitterly, shrieking in affront, but the big dragon ignores them and picks another one off.
It takes Dick a startlingly long moment to realize that the dragonets are his.  They’re—they’re his babies, his eggs, and no wonder the dragon attacked him if he thought that Dick was—Dick lowers his gaze to the remaining dragonet in his arms, and up to the large dragon.
:Idiot human: broadcasts loud and clear into his head.  The dragon looks supremely unimpressed.  :Where did you think the egg came from?:
“You could’ve just explained that,” Dick croaks out, because the dragon had flamed first and not asked any questions.
:I don’t explain things to egg-stealers: the dragon bristles in outrage, stirring all three dragonets into hissing, and Dick can’t help the instinctive reaction to curl up at the weight of fury.
No flames.  No heat.  Dick cracks open an eye, and when he doesn’t see imminent sign of attack, uncurls further, loosening his grip on the black dragonet.
The dragonet doesn’t care, he merely pushes further into Dick’s grasp, like an indolent cat.
:Grant: comes the echo inside his head.  The large dragon lifts the left wingclaw, and then the right.  :Joseph.  Rose.  And my name is Slade.:
“They’re nice names,” Dick dares to venture, “and nice children.”
Slade gives him the flattest look he’s ever seen a dragon wear.  The two dragonets in his grasp are struggling in impotent outrage.  Grant is nearly blanketing Dick, sprawled out with a sense of smug satisfaction.  His siblings aren’t pleased.
The squeaking grows louder and Slade snarls—the sound is loud enough to reverberate in Dick’s bones.  :He is not your mother: Slade snaps, :I don’t care what Grant told you.:

Thinking about my 'Nadders being able to mimick human speech like parrots' concept again but with a slightly darker take on it?
Deadly Nadders are a fiercely loyal species and are social, so what if when they perceive a threat to their flock they gradually learn to lure people away using human voices (likely the sounds of children or people calling for help) to either A) if you're lucky, just get tricked into walking to the edge of the forest/area so you don't find them, or B) get lost in the woods so the Nadder can spineshot you out of sight.
I also think Changewings could do something similar considering their gaze is hypnotic (in the comics didn't Hiccup get hypnotized by one and almost walked off a cliff?)
