Fuutarou Uesugi is a talented high school student who faces challenges. Because of his aloof demeanor and reclusive behavior, he has no friends. He discovers that his struggles are far from over after failing to reclaim Itsuki's favor.

Fuutarou and Maruo burying the hatchet

I honestly liked this scene more than I thought I would have. It concludes a story thread throughout the narrative - Fuutarou and Maruo’s conflict - and it also uses it as an opportunity to answer a persisting dramatic question that wasn’t relevant to the narrative but was still left unanswered - what happened to Fuutarou’s mother? -. Plus, it shows how much Fuutarou wants to make peace with Maruo by putting aside his usual haughtiness and even expressing vulnerability to Maruo by opening up about his mother and admiration towards Maruo and his own father (who we barely see Fuutarou interact with) over the love they all have for their wives. It’s a side to Fuutarou we rarely if ever saw throughout the series and is very good to see before it ends.

The Quintessential Quintuplets Dub Impressions

Ok. So I meant to do this with Magical Girl Spc-Ops Asuka when that Simuldub dropped, but I never got around to it because of work, but I’ll do it now with Quintuplets, mostly because this was the one I was waiting on.

Show Summary: Japanese high school student Uesugi Fuutarou has achieved excellent grades but leads a difficult life otherwise: no mother, no friends, and a father struggling with large debts while Fuutarou and his younger sister Raiha often go hungry.

An opportunity presents itself when the rich Nakano family arrives in his school and Fuutarou is hired as a highly-paid tutor, but he discovers his five charges — charming identical quintuplet sisters of varied personalities — have in common zero interest in study and abysmal grades. Some of the quintuplets are against having an unknown male in their apartment, but Fuutarou's diligent tenacity gradually convinces those girls to reduce their attempts to have him poisoned or arrested, and to advance in their studies.

Moreover, through a flashforward, it turns out that Fuutarou will marry one of the sisters, but, during his tutoring, all of them fall in love with him. So, who will ever be his bride?

Show Thoughts: Four episodes in and I can safely say I’m enjoying the show so far. Fuutaro kinda reminds me of Hachiman from Oregairu (which is always a good thing) and the Nakano sisters each have enough personality to tell them apart from one another. 

Now on to the cast:

Josh Grelle as Fuutaro Uesugi: Our hapless protagonist. Honestly I shouldn’t have been surprised that Funi’s resident “King of Harems” Josh Grelle got this role (His second this season when you add in Date A Live 3). That being said, while I love Grelle and he did a good job as always, I think I would have preferred Adam Gibbs a little bit more because he kind of fits how I picture Uesugi sounding in english. Hell since Uesugi’s seiyuu (Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) is Kirito in SAO, it would have been amusing if Funi could have gotten Bryce Papenbrook to play him.

Dani Chambers as Raiha Uesugi: Jesus, that hair. Fuutarou’s little sister. Not much to say here since as of now she’s mostly the token cute kid, but more Dani Chambers is always good. She really broke out as Chise in Ancient Magus Bride, and she sounded good here so I’m looking forward to more Raiha in the show. 

Jim Foronda as Isanari Uesugi: Fuutarou and Raiha’s father. He didn’t have much to say in the first episode, but he sounded fine. Haven’t heard much of Foronda despite him being around for a while so I’ll be looking forward to his performance if Isanari gets more lines.

Jill Harris as Nino: Jill Harris playing an aggressive, slightly uptight, tsundere? I can practically hear the Black Clover theme playing in the background. Jokes aside she sounded fairly good here, and captured Nino’s personality pretty well from the get go. 

Felecia Angelle as Miku: I’ve always like when Angelle played the more kuudere, stoic, type characters (Sayaka from Keijo and Mero from Sanakrea immediately come to mind). Her voice just seems to naturally lend itself to that archetype and Miku is no different. Another good perfomance.

Tia Ballard as Itsuki: The “main” girl of the harem since she is the first one Fuutarou meets and she gets the most lines. There were times when I thought Tia’s voice was a little too mature for her, but for the most part she was pretty great.

Bryn Apprill as Yostuba: My second favorite of the sisters. At first I didn’t know if it was Apprill or Megan Shipman, but thankfully twitter sorted that out for me. I forget sometimes that Apprill has good range since Yotsuba sounds nothing like Ai from Zombie Lan Saga (who Apprill also played). I could hear her channeling a bit of Nene from New Game, which is fine given Yotsuba’s bubbly personality. Though I am hoping that there will be some moments where Yostuba gets a little more serious since Apprill is great at those moments as well.

Lindsay Siedel as Ichika: Best for last. My favorite of the sisters, who also happens to be voice by one of my favorite actresses. This was pretty much perfect casting in my eyes (or rather ears). Ichika is pretty much the leader of the group and Seidel gives her the mature voice that she needs while also keeping it playful during the more comedic moments. 

All in all the casting for the show is pretty good. Everyone fits and the interactions feel genuine. I don’t know who the director is as of now, but judging by this first episode they did a good job. I look forward to watching the rest of the dub.

Fuutarou’s Father, The Quintuplets’ Stepfather and The Quintuplets’ Mother

Not sure if it’ll be important at all, but it turns out Fuutarou’s father, Isanari Uesugi, and the Quintuplets’ stepfather, Maruo Nakano, used to go to school together explaining how the two of them knew each other, which was a major catalyst to the series as their relationship got Fuutarou’s job as the Quintuplets’ tutor.

Anyway, my speculation is that Maruo and Isanari were students to the Quintuplets’ mother, Rena, based on the fact that Maruo was said to be younger than her

Rena describes him as her fan when explaining him to Quintuplets, similar to how she had a fan club back when she was a teacher

And I’m pretty sure that’s Isanari in this flashback of when Rena was a teacher
