The Covenant (2006)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
The Covenant is a laughable attempt to give us the teenage boys’ answer to The Craft. It’s not the exact same movie but it feels like what you’d get if you replaced the goths with jocks. Filled with useless characters, a confusing mythology, horrible performances, lacklustre special effects and a dismal script, I suspect those watching will fall into one of two camps: those who will be bored to tears and those who will find it unintentionally hysterical.
The American town of Ipswich was partially founded by five families of witches. In modern day, their descendants possess magical abilities which manifest on their 13th birthday and grow stronger until they “Ascend” at age 18. At their strongest, they can bend the world to their every whim - but each use of their powers will cause them to age. Caleb (Steven Strait), Pogue (Taylor Kitsch), Reid (Toby Hemingway) and Tyler (Chace Crawford) use their magic to get back at bullies, impress girls and have a good time. With Caleb’s 18th birthday coming up, he’s become cautious about using his abilities. Spell-slinging has the tendency to become addictive. When a student is found dead of unexplainable causes on campus, Caleb wonders if Reid - the most reckless of the group - is responsible.
The film is simultaneously as predictable as the face of a clock and completely bewildering. The reason for this is the cast. All four of the boys and nearly every other male attending Spencer Academy look the same. Their personalities are shallow, the character development all but non-existent. If someone doesn’t have a wildly different haircut than the rest, you’ll have trouble remembering who they are. When we learn who is responsible for the campus murder, you'll think "I should’ve seen it coming". The hints dropped are not subtle but you’ll still wonder if this is the first time we're shown them.
Your only hope is to keep track of every character by giving them nicknames. The main character is “Discount Jacob”. The guy with the blonde hair is “Draco Malfoy”. The girl falling for Discount Jacob is Future Hostage/Sarah (Laura Ramsey). You’ll probably remember Pogue because his name’s so weird. Also, he’s dating the other (useless) female character, Kate (Jessica Lucas). I don’t want to sound mean but it’s true. The ladies in this movie might as well be valuable lamps the villain threatens to break. They’re powerless compared to the wizards and contribute nothing to this story. Their principal role (besides being put in danger) is to confirm that, despite all hints of the contrary, the four best friends are definitely not gay. Isolated clips will make you think this film is about a love quadrangle between four very handsome, very fit teenagers but “no homo dude, I’m kissing a girl in this scene”.
The story is a hodge-podge of clichés and discount-bin tropes. Your brain is already sizzling from the strain required to keep track of the characters and the ludicrous, poorly-established mythology. There’s no way you could become invested in the story even if it were any good. “I’m going to make you my Wee-yotch!” Is probably the worst line uttered in any film made in 2006. “Come to save little Ms. Muffet, have we?” Is another solid contender. These are the most obvious examples of bad dialogue, but there’s no shortage of it.
Director Renny Harlin and writer J. S. Cardone get the big things wrong and the details too. Take an early scene in which Future Hostage Sarah is in the communal shower. She gets spooked by strange noises and then hurries away in her towel, walking nervously while her eyes dart in every direction. Either she A) undressed in her room and walked through the long, dark corridors practically naked, or she left all of her clothes behind. Either way, in the process, she shows us three of the five rooms in the high school. Or is it high school? None of these actors LOOK like teenagers and we learn the villain did something bad on their 18th birthday, which was some time ago… Everyone owns cars or motorcycles, there’s an extended scene in a bar. Nothing makes sense.
The Covenant feels like a bad CW show, a brainless knockoff of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that’s gotten lost in the shuffle and accidentally ended up on the big screen. Most of it you just can’t believe someone looked at during the editing and said “yeah, let’s go with that”. It’s frequently laugh-out-loud funny in ways it never intended to be and the cherry on top of the sundae has to be the ending. It contradicts a point The Covenant was repeatedly making during the whole film AND sets things up for a sequel. Even back in the day, I could’ve told you that wasn’t going to happen. The Times-Leader (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.)
Freeland man pleads not guilty to Hazleton fatal shooting
Ed Lewis, The Times Leader, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Tue, June 11, 2024 at 3:19 PM EDT·1 min read
Jun. 11—WILKES-BARRE — A native from Dominican Republic charged in a shooting that turned deadly in Hazleton pled not guilty to murder charges at his formal arraignment in Luzerne County Court on Tuesday.
Jenndry Samuel Rodriguez-Contreras, 23, address listed as Pine Street, Freeland, was charged by Hazleton City Police with fatally shooting Felix Dini, 22, and injuring Rochell Angel Reyes-Cruz, 24, in the rear of 199 S. Wyoming St. on Oct. 7, 2022, according to court records.
Dini and Reyes-Cruz each suffered four gunshot wounds. Dini died Oct. 10, 2022.
Investigators only knew the shooter as "Jendry," until a cooperating witness provided Contreras' full name as the gunman in November 2023, court records say.
Court records say Contreras fled his native Dominican Republic after being accused of an attempted homicide and illegally crossed into the United States in Texas in early 2022, about seven months before Dini and Reyes-Cruz were shot.
After the Hazleton shooting, Contreras fled to New York City and was captured by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force at a residence in York, York County, on Feb. 9.
Through his attorney, James J. Scanlon, Rodriguez-Contreras pled not guilty to first-degree murder, third-degree murder, criminal conspiracy and two counts of aggravated assault before Judge David W. Lupas.
Assistant district attorneys Daniel Mulhern, Anthony Cardone and Drew McLaughlin are prosecuting.
Lupas said he will scheduled a trial at a later date.
As Hazleton police investigated the case, two people charged for their alleged role in the deadly shooting were acquitted by a Luzerne County jury following a trial in August 2023.

Horror Movie Review: The Slayer (1982)
The Slayer tries to tell a story based in reality, but also works at leaving so many elements vague, that you’re never quite sure what is going on.
A non-prosecuted video nasty, and for good reason, The Slayer aka Nightmare Island was directed by J. S. Cardone who wrote it with William R. Ewing. It stars Sarah Kendall, Frederick Flynn, Carol Kottenbrook and Alan McRae. Artist Kay has been plagued by nightmares since she was a young child. They come; they go but when they cause her to sink into depression. Her latest bouts of nightmares have…

Look at the world we inherited. We're a bunch of fast-food munching MTV freaks humping the great American dream. The generation before us sold their innocence for 200 satellite stations. It's been downhill ever since. They had Mickey Mouse, Easy Rider and the Beatles. We got South Park, The Blair Bitch and Ricky Martin. All right, they had "Be here now!" We got "Shit happens." If that doesn't put things in perspective, what does? We're Microsoft Neanderthals addicted to surfing netland, shitting in our nests.

The Covenant (2006)
Tumblr media

Notable Cast: Steven Strait; Sebastian Stan; Laura Ramsey; Taylor Kitsch
Run Time: 97 minutes
Language: English
Restrictions: PG13 for violence, horror, language and nudity
Genre: Horror; Mystery; Thriller
Tumblr media
The Covenant is by far one of the worst films I have ever had the misfortune to see. But with Renny Harlin directing a typical early-2000s supernatural thriller film, it was never going to win any Oscars. Deemed a “Twilight for boys” it lives up to its title from everything to the constant turquoise filter (though, thankfully, not as saturated) to the unnatural line delivery.
The story, for all its messy plot dynamics, follows Caleb Danvers (Steven Strait) and his three witch friends Pogue (Taylor Kitsch), Reid (Toby Hemingway) and Tyler (Chace Crawford) as they all inch closer to the day where they turn 18, “Ascend” and inherit their full powers. If it were a more thought-out movie I’d say this sounds like an aggressive metaphor for adulthood, but in the way the movie plays out it is evident that this is far from the case.
Even though all the actors look blatantly as though they’re in their early to mid 20s, the boys are meant to be 17-year-old high schoolers and therefore act as such. They go to parties, they go out with girls and they like to cause destruction more than keeping their heads down and studying. The two girls in the film, Kate (Jessica Lucas) and Sarah (Laura Ramsey) are the same person with different hair colours. They hold no agency and exist to only entertain whichever of the “Sons of Ipswitch” - what Kate calls Caleb and his friends - wants them at that particular time. Sarah’s tattoos are more three-dimensional than she is.
And while the boys do get somewhat different personalities - Caleb the leader, Pogue the best friend, Reid the agitator and Tyler... Tyler could be written out and the movie would remain the same - their personalities aren’t static. Their core beliefs change whichever way the wind blows and the writing doesn’t know how to keep their voices consistent. With the literal silencing of Tyler, it is obvious the writers bit off more than they could chew. Even the film’s antagonist, Caleb’s mortal enemy Chase Collins (Sebastian Stan) takes a full 180 in his personality from the start to the climax for no reason. One minute he’s trying to get on Caleb’s good side and stab him in the back, and the next he’s loudly proclaiming his hatred by attacking everyone Caleb loves.
Tumblr media
I use the word “loves” very freely because if there is one thing worse than the consistency of the characters themselves, it’s the chemistry of all interactions around each other.
Sarah, for all intents and purposes, is meant to serve as Caleb’s love interest. She’s the ray of sunshine that breaks through our hero’s cold outer shell. If only she was a ray of sunshine or Caleb had a cold outer shell. Every Interaction with them is drier than my grandmother’s pies and only served to lengthen an already threadbare script. After a week of knowing each other the audience is meant to believe that they are madly in love, but they can’t even be friends.
The other relationship in the film, that of Kate and Pogue, is better only in the sense that they’re meant to feel distant from one another. The writers gave up and wrote their lack of chemistry right in to the script it seems. At the end of the film when Kate is hospitalised due to Chase casting a spell on her - through some very confusing logic - only then does Pogue show any scrap of concern for her. Concern that is then overshadowed by the convoluted plot set in motion by Chase’s plans.
To be honest, the most organic interactions came about between Chase and Caleb, though that really isn’t saying much. In the first half of the movie, when the plot calls for Chase to be all puppies and rainbows, Caleb seems more invested in him than he does Sarah. He goes out of his way to spend time with Chase, even pushing back a dinner date with Sarah to later in the evening so they can spend the afternoon together. Their ‘warm up fight’ in Sarah’s bedroom in the second half of the film ends with the most heated, emotion fueled minutes of the boys cramped together on the bathroom floor. Chase goes so far as to kiss Caleb - after calling him “brother” to ease the tension of course - before storming out of the room. It can’t be good form for your protagonist and antagonist to have more emotion in their interactions than your protagonist and his compulsory love interest.
Tumblr media
After watching this movie once, and then again, and then yet again, the plot still makes very little sense. The world and conflicts are introduced in a way that is cliche but understandable. The issue arises around Chase’s ideas for revenge.
Allegedly, he hates Caleb because their ancient relatives had bad blood. Chase being adopted, he only learned about this when he was a teenager and the Power that is so important to these Ipswitch witches had already taken over him. He moves to Caleb’s school after finding out who he is in an attempt to gather more Power and increase his strength. So far, the ambition makes sense.
What does not makes sense is his plan to take Caleb’s power.
Instead of focusing on the boy who he is quickly becoming close to, Chase targets everyone around him, drawing out the movie about 90 minutes longer than it needed to be. Chase’s logic follows that if he puts Kate in hospital, Pogue will come after her. At which point Chase can fight Pogue and hospitalise him, luring out Caleb. All of this he does, but then he goes to Sarah’s room, pretending to be Caleb. Even though all these boys look identical he still thinks it necessary to glamour himself. Now placing a spell on Sarah, Caleb comes to the room to find them both. Which results in their warm-up fight and Chase begging for Caleb’s Power.
I honestly see no reason why all three middle men couldn’t have been cut out. At least Kate and Pogue, there is no reason that they should have been involved under that justification. Sarah is the only “bait” I can suspend my disbelief for.
Tumblr media
This film is such a disaster that there is nothing more to add.
Except - I enjoyed it. It’s one of the worst films I will ever watch and now it’s also one of my favourites. The plot is a wreck. The acting would have more expression if done by sock puppets. The dialogue choices are questionable at best (featuring among their greatest hits the iconic “Harry Potter can kiss my ass” and “Wiatch”) but that adds to the enjoyment of it all. It’s a movie to watch when you don’t need to think and can watch someone else’s failure to feel better about yourself. Because if someone can get funding and cinema screening for this 3/10 movie, anything is possible.

Spiny Lobster: Spiny and Clawless but Colorful Nonetheless
Tumblr media
Photo from: Florent’s Guide to the Tropical Reefs
Yes, you read it right! Apparently there exists a lobster (Family Palinuridae) without claws. It may not be the one you’ve exactly imagined when you see those crustaceans whose claws are clamped in an aquarium outside a seafood restaurant but we’re pretty sure these lobsters saved the chef from some pinches. To some punctures? That we don’t know. It is named spiny lobster afterall!
I. Classification
Kingdom: Animalia
 Phylum: Arthropoda
   Subphylum:   Crustacea
     Class: Malacostraca
       Subclass: Eumalacostraca
         Superorder: Eucarida
           Order: Decapoda
             Suborder: Pleocyemata
               Infraorder: Achelata
                 Family: Panuliridae
                   Genus: Panulirus
Species: versicolor (Fofonoff et. al. 2018)
II. Distribution: Hi! So my address is just right here..
Tumblr media
Photo from:  Lavery et. al. 2014
Known as the Painted Spiny Lobster, they are native to the Indo-Pacific waters and are distributed in the Red Sea, South Africa, Southern Japan, Northern Australia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. However, the first non-native occurrence is reported in the Brunswick River, Georgia (Fofonoff et. al. 2018).
III. Anatomy: Pinching for that Body Plan
Extenal Anatomy
Tumblr media
The external anatomy of a true lobster (Family Nephropidae) is composed of two parts: The Cephalothorax and the Abdomen as depicted above. The same is true for spiny lobsters but the Paniluridae traversed a different way in the path called evolution.
Tumblr media
Photo from: Charles Derby 2011 (up) and Nemesis Database Species Summary (down)
So what do true lobsters have that spiny lobsters don’t? Or better yet what makes spiny lobsters unique from other lobsters?
Spiny lobsters lack the prominent claws and rostrum associated with true lobsters and instead have two frontal horns and prominent dorsal spines (Fofonoff et. al. 2018). Its body is tubular in shape with all of its legs not possessing true pincers and the first pair is not enlarged (Tavares). The antennae are cylindrical, enlarged, and longer than its body. The total body length reaches up to 400mm, but the average maximum size is around 300mm. The male spiny lobster tends to be larger than females (Fofonoff et. al. 2018).
Panulirus versicolor’s carapace has a whitish background, with large areas of bluish-black. The abdomen, on the other hand, is predominantly green in color and the telson is a mix of bluish-black and green. The legs are lined with black and blue stripes. The antenna is pinkish-red in the thicker and lower segments and becomes white ringed with black rings in the upper segment (Sutton 2017).
Tumblr media
The following are brief functions of the spiny lobster’s general external anatomy:
Shell: This part is the lobster’s exoskeleton, made from chitin, which serves as a protection for the internal anatomy. However, for the lobster to grow, it sheds its shell in the process called molting.
Antennae and Antennules: The antennae and antennules of the lobster are used as chemoreceptors, which detect odors and chemical signals to help them in locating food, mate, and avoid danger. In spiny lobsters, the antenna is longer than the antennules.
Stalks: For their vision, lobsters have long and stalked compound eyes. Although stalked, their vision is not that excellent, and can only see images in dim light.
Legs: Since they are under Decapoda, they have 10 legs that are used by the animal to navigate its way on the seafloor.
Tail fan: This is the last segment of the lobster. It has a telson as the center tail fin and pairs of uropods at both sides and is used for backward propulsion.
 Internal Anatomy
Tumblr media
These creatures as a member of the Decapod group have internal organs that are the same as the other species. Its circulatory system is open, unlike humans. They have a single-chambered heart that is composed of muscles and ostia, or openings. Usually, the heart of an adult lobster beats for 50-136 beats per minute.
IV. Reproduction and Life Cycle
Tumblr media
Photo from: Shiran Weerathunga, 2014
A day in a lobster’s life, they reach sexual maturity at the age of 5 to 6 years. The male’s task is to mate with as many female lobsters there is. Usually, they mate to a depth of 50 to 100 feet of water. As they mate, the male will deposit its spermatophore or known as the plaster in the female’s belly. After a while, the female will move to waters less than 30 feet deep, and when she is ready to spawn, she will use the pincers on her fifth walking leg to cut the plaster and fertilize her 80,000 to 800,000 eggs.
These eggs will be deposited under her tail, where she will perform parental duties until they hatch 9 to 10 weeks later. Usually, the larvae are transparent, large, pigmented eyes with long legs, and have little resemblance to adult lobsters. After 7 to 9 months they drift with the currents and eat plankton, after which they go to shallow water and settle at the bottom. Their lifespan is estimated to be 15 years (Cardone 2008; NOAA Fisheries 2020).
Check out this video of spiny lobsters mating!
youtube
and these cute baby lobsters!
youtube
V. Ecology
Habitat
They are found living singly or in groups in shallow water ranging from the low-tide marks up to 15 m depth and often reside in rocky areas, coral reefs, and overhangs that provide them protection (Fofonoff et. al. 2018; Mortiz 2010).
Tumblr media
Feeding Habit and Predators
Spiny lobsters are nocturnal and carnivore feeders. They even exhibit cannibalism at some point in their lives. They remain hidden in their reef or rock shelters called dens during the day and hunt during night for a variety of mollusks, shrimp, crabs, worms, and sea urchins (Sutton 2017). They use their strong legs to pry open their prey. Meanwhile, spiny lobsters are a delicacy not only to humans but octopus, groupers, and trigger fishes as well.
Be fascintaed with this video on how spiny lobsters protect themselves from a trigger fish.
youtube
VI.  Relationship with Humans
Ornamental organisms
The juvenile painted spiny lobster displays a vibrant and attractive coloration of blue and purple body with white antennae which has attracted the market of tropical marine aquarium trade (Fofonoff et. al. 2018).
Tumblr media
Photo by: Rokus Groeneveld & Sanne Rejis
For consumption
Spiny lobsters in general are eaten and are regarded as a delicacy. The meat located at the lobster’s abdomen proved to be very tasty and chewy.
youtube
While the lobster is a rich source of copper and selenium, it contains very high cholesterol, thus, it should be eaten in a regulated manner. Additionally, lobster contains zinc, phosphorus, vitamin B12, magnesium, vitamin E, and a small amount of omega-3 fatty acids (Ware 2018).
For livelihood
As of 2011, Panulirus spp. farming has not been reported in the last years to FAO but the species are cultured in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines (Clive and Shanks 2009). Philippine waters are a natural resource of seeds for lobster farming and so there is a regional trade in peuruli and juveniles to establish spiny lobster farming.
Tumblr media
Photo from: Mercator Media Ltd 2020
However, an article published in 2018 says that BFAR will bring the lucrative lobster culture to poor communities in Eastern Visayas by providing the cages and feeds to the beneficiaries (Meniano 2018). According to BFAR, the lobster culture is very ideal not only because of the strong demand from China and Taiwan but also because it is very expensive (4,000 per kilogram) (Meniano 2018).
VII. Did you know?
1. Lobsters pee out of their heads. While their anus is located posteriorly, their bladder is found under its brain and the opening is located at the base of their antennae, or just under their eyes!
Tumblr media
2. The female lobster takes "her clothes off" to mate. Female lobsters “take off” their shells during molting and it is in this process that they decide to mate as well.
Tumblr media
3. Lobsters have two stomachs. To make things even more weird, the first stomach located on its head has teeth! It functions to crush food and the second aids in digestion and is located at the abdomen.
Tumblr media
4. Lobsters can detach one of their limbs in an emergency. Don’t worry, they are able to regrow it during the molting process.(Yes, the organism in the video is a crayfish but the mechanism is the same with their lobster cousins!)
youtube
5. In the 17th century, lobster was anything but a delicacy. In fact, a field guide by Motoh from Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center in 1980 said that the spiny lobster sells for about ₱55/kg in Manila and ₱40/kg in local areas! Now, as stated above, it costs ₱4,000/kg!

6. The blood is known as the hemolymph and is color blue due to the presence of Copper.

Movie Review: The Covenant (2006)
So The Covenant is easily one of my favourite films, it is by no means perfect as I will expand upon later but something about it is nonetheless endearing. Before we move on to the actual review though I will expand upon the details of the movie a little more.
The Covenant is a Canadian/American supernatural film, it was written by J. S. Cardone (known for writing and directing The Slayer, Shadowzone and The Forsaken) and is directed by Renny Harlin (known for directing A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, Die Hard 2 and Deep Blue Sea).
The movie stars Steven Strait (noted for his roles in Sky High, 10,000 BC and The Expanse), Sebastian Stan (noted for his roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gossip Girl and Kings), Laura Ramsey (noted for her roles in She’s the Man, The Ruins and Middle Men), Taylor Kitsch (he is noted for his roles in Friday Night Lights, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Battleship), Jessica Lucas (noted for her roles in Edgemont, Melrose Place and Gotham), Toby Hemingway (noted for his roles in Black Swan, Into the Darkness and Street and Playback) and Chace Crawford (noted for his roles in Gossip Girl, Blood & Oil and The Boys).
