ive always loved that vimes' ancestor was a king killer and yet vetinari promotes him to commander, knight, and then duke, even changing history and erecting a statue of old stoneface by the palace for vimes. by all rights, vimes should be at permanent odds with whoever was ruling ankh-morpork, but luck played a trick on him and stuck him with vetinari. and it is not clear if it benefitted him or just pissed him the hell off with the way he tries so desperately to escape his fate as a well fed and comfortable old rich man with a nuclear family!!! and vimes does play his part but it really is just a performance: every chance he gets, he breaks societal norms and tries to rebel against his OWN authority, a classic vimes move, and when you finally think well, now hes done it, now its over for real this time, he turns around and goes back to pretending he can still...pretend. when do we get to see the genuine article? well i think its in night watch, honestly, when hes fully removed from his unnatural habitat and replaced into an environment where he thrives despite everything . and what happens in night watch? oh he just fulfills the same basic purpose that old stoneface did, a flailing revolutionary, kicking and screaming the whole way, trying so hard not to follow his instinct. and in the end, it still goes the way all vimes books go, where he returns home without a single peep, promising he'll be a better husband and a real father and then he still, STILL, isnt there for his family in the books to come. its a vicious cycle !

hate when people come into my work and look at me and go 'You look tired'... I AM TIRED. I'm in a constant state of exhaustion. I NEVER want to leave my bed. It has pillows and blankets and I can close my eyes. Instead, Im here. At work. Listening to people comment on my dark undereye circles and lack of a cheerful expression! Shut up. I do look like this 90% of the time.
