The title matches in this year's Australian Open started with the Mixed Doubles final, which featured third seeds Su-Wei Hsieh/Jan Zielinski, who prevented the likely awkward moment in the finals by defeating wild cards Jaimee Fourlis/Andrew Harris 7-6(8), 6-2. Awkward, because otherwise, they would face second seeds Desirae Krawczyk (with whom A. Harris is dating to)/Neal Skupski (hereby referred to as Krawski), who also prevented the likelihood of an all-Australian wild card finals by defeating Olivia Gadecki/Marc Polmans 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals in hopes for a career Mixed Doubles Grand Slam for Des. Looking at the dynamics alone, the match ended up delivering in one way or another, and turned out to be an epic one for the records.
Hsieh/J. Zielinski might have had a nervy start, where a cross-court forehand error resulted in the deciding point, but still managed to hold their service games to 1-0. Somehow, it took 4 straight holds before Neal's forehand returns to Hsieh's backhand opened the gate and created Krawski's break point before Des' backhand return ace broke Hsieh/J. Zielinski's serves to 4-3. With a 0-hold, Krawski then held their service games to 5-3.
However, the tables started to turn when Neal/Des had to serve for the first set at 5-4. Here, after a cross-court backhand secured a crucial equalizer, Hsieh casually returned a 169 km/h serve from Neal to set themselves one point ahead before she passed Des at the net for the break point due to the latter's volleying hesitation. The pressure then went to Neal, who double-faulted to hand Hsieh/J. Zielinski the break. Interestingly, Krawski's defenses set themselves one point ahead, but Hsieh/J. Zielinski still held to 6-5, and even though the latter minimized the gap thanks to J. Zielinski's tweener to Hsieh's final smash, the first set tie-breaker became inevitable.
In the tie-breaker, Hsieh/J. Zielinski initially had the edge thanks to J. Zielinski's backhands for their mini-break lead (2-0), only for Krawski to catch up 2 points later. Des' forehand winner then set Krawski a mini-break ahead (3-2) only for them to be caught up again. It was not until a backhand winner was fired to the open court from Krawski's half before they consolidated the lead to hold (6-4). Despite the visible tightness through Des' failed +1 volley that saved the set point, a more successful one on return resulted in Krawski taking the first set 7-6(4), putting them in the forefront of the title race.
