Her run to the final was tough – she overcame two epics in the third and fourth rounds against Nadia Petrova and Maria Kirilenko, before cruising past Vera Zvonareva in the quarters. She won in three sets against Angelique Kerber in the quarters, and was…

[Late Post] BJKC WG F SF: UK vs. AU S1: Storm Sanders def. Heather Watson 6-4, 7-6(5) Match Recap
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
📸 9 Sports Australia
The first rubber of the Billie Jean King Cup World Group Finals (on Semifinals stage) seen the encounter between Australia and the United Kingdom, in which the latter advanced to its first semifinal since 1981. Both countries advanced from the group stage that was held in the past few days, and in the case of the UK: they came back from the miraculous run from two days ago, and looking forward to keeping their momentum alive to advanced to their first Finals after ages.
The first rubber had Heather Watson taking Storm Sanders to secure a lead for whoever wins it. Sanders started solid from the way she took the initiative by playing more aggressively, constantly hitting deeper returns. It was rewarded with an early break in the first set, in which she took at 6-4. However, after she received a medical timeout by the end of this set (consider that she played singles brilliantly throughout this BJKC after ages), Hev started to build her momentum by digging even deeper, building on a 2-0 lead. Subsequently, Sanders started to regain her momentum to find a way to break back, controlling the baseline rally until Hev erred his backhand, breaking 1-2. She then dominated the second set tie-breaker in a similar manner, thus defeating Hev in straight sets.
The stats resonated similarly with the flow on how Sanders managed to serve well in her first serves, winning 72% of her points of there (with 88% accuracy rate). Her aggressive gameplay enabled her to score 32 combined winners (forehand + backhand altogether), nailing her net exchanges and won one point from there. Those were also the reasons she converted 2 out of 11 break chances, forcing Hev to commit 63 different types of errors (both forced and unforced). That was close, but it might have boiled down to the pressure points, judging from how the rallies went.
In the second and third rubbers, Harriet Dart kept the British hopes alive as she defeated Ajla Tomljanovic 7-6(5), 6-2, seen more solid in the second set and never turned back since. However, Alicia Barnett/Olivia Nicholls faced a tough encounter in Storm Sanders/Samantha Stosur 7-6(1), 6-7(5), [10-6], perhaps the pressing moments were at it again (although, experience might have been the case for Sanders/Stosur). The girls fought hard and fought well, and this run would still be remembered for the rest of their lives.
Meanwhile, Australia will face the winner between Switzerland and Czech Republic, which tie will be played after this. Should be quite a neat tie, regardless of those who advanced!
