Something I've been wondering since a lot of the older cats tend to get cast younger and younger recently - are there any performers you could plausibly see as "real" younger versions of those characters?
Anon, that is actually a super interesting question (and I hope I'm understanding what you're asking for; apologies if I misunderstood - if you are asking whether there are performers who have not played the role but played others and can get away with playing them, honestly I'm not a big proponent of having all super young swings and understudies, and I've spoken at length about that before), but there *are* actually a handful of performers of past (which means that they *were* young when they initially took the role and looked it) and present that I could feasibly see as younger (and by "younger" I mean like more in the 20s) faceclaims or "versions" of my beloved older cats (and that I often will note back too when I'm trying to picture them in my mind).
From what I have heard and seen of them, they also give off more of a younger vibe, either due to the lack of maturity in their voices, or their general dispositions, that I think works well as these characters but younger. Imagine a different bunch of teenagers and gapped teeth babies running around the Junkyard hollering at one another and whining at their parents before *they* became the parents, ahaha.
I can give you some of my favourites to avoid wasting too much space. I can do a Part 2 with Asparagus/Gus, Old D and Grizabella if you're interested:
Skimbleshanks:
Tumblr media
Matthew Gould (on his first go around; he aged into it much better the second go - Ross Finnie could technically also take this spot)
Tumblr media
Philip Bertioli (and this is a costume thing but his vest always looked too big for him which just amped up the baby vibe)
Tumblr media
Giovanni DiGabriele
Tumblr media
Hayden Baum (specifically his first go around - that is a baby)
Tumblr media
Tyler Keller (who looks *particularly* old photo like in this shot with the filter and expression - slap a black and white or sepia filter over that and tell me that's not an old photograph)
Tumblr media
Taylor Scanlan (also *very* baby and *very* pretty*).
(Others for consideration if these don't tickle your fancy: Sandy Rass, Sean McManus, Shaun Henson, Jon-Paul Christensen, Philip Comley, Dann Dunn, Brian O'Muiri, Billy Mahoney, Jarryd Nurden, Park Seong-ryong, Bryan Mottram
Jellylorum:

Catrin Darnell

Annemarie Rosano
(Others: Liz Izen, Louise Tomkins, Bonnie Simmons, Nina Hennessey, Marcy DeGonge, Jennifer Vaden, Thea MacNeil, Lisa-Marie Parker, Carrie Willis, Megan Arseneau, Taila Halford, and Alice Batt. S/O to Pia Douwes who toed the baby line, and nearly all Jellylorums in the Shiki production and a good chunk of the US Tour 5 who are and were - more often than not - quite young and look it)
Jennyanydots:

"HAD REVOLVER IN POSSESSION, MUST PAY FINE," Hamilton Spectator. May 20, 1943. Page 24. ---- Minor Lee Fined $150 By Magistrate Burbidge To-day ---- INCIDENT IN HOUSE ---- Minor Lee, Chinese laundryman, of 378 York street, was fined $150 and costs or three months for carrying an unregistered revolver by Magistrate H. A. Burbidge to-day, but still unexplained is his reason for pointing the weapon at a girl in a home near his laundry the other night.
His Worship voiced one theory: "The cave man used to make love with a stone hammer in one hand - perhaps it is the modern version to make love with a revolver in one hand," he suggested.
Detective Charles Boecker told the court that he was called to the York street home, the night of May 11, and found accused sitting on the arm of a chesterfield in which a man and a girl were seated. A 32 revolver was found in Lee's pocket, and five shells in another pocket, the detective said.
The complainant told the detective that Lee had entered the home -he had been there on previous occasions and took the revolver from his pocket and pointed it at her. She grappled with him, managed to take the weapon away, but he recovered it. Nothing more was done until the police arrived.
Lee said that he had found the revolver in a trunk following the death of his father a few weeks ago. It has not been registered, according to word received from the R. C.M.P. at Ottawa.
"I keep it for protection, because I have to work late at night," Lee said. Asked why he had taken the gun to the home that night, accused said: "I heard shouting in there." He was bound over for two years to keep the peace.
Convicted of being in care or control of a car while intoxicated, Alex. J. Shaver, of 105 Kensington avenue, was sentenced to 21 days in jail, to date from May 14. A reckless driving count was withdrawn.
Committed For Trial Dr. Roswell Park, of 712 Main street east, and Philip Brooks, 27, of Aldershot, were committed for trial on a joint charge of abortion.
Frank Baker, of 103 Stuart street west, was fined $50 of one month on a drunk charge.
Three Years "This is a Christian community, and sacrilege is a serious thing," His Worship commented, Imposing a term of three years in the penitentiary on Thomas Smith, 33, of 390 Bay street north [pictured]. Smith came up for sentence on a charge of stealing a large Bible from Christ's Church Cathedral recently.
"He is deserving of no leniency and this offence does not warrant any," asserted Harvey McCulloch, crown attorney. "There should be a deterrent sentence imposed to stop this sort of thing."
"My only worry was whether I should make it a reformatory sentence," His Worship said. "The lads in the reformatory should not have this type of thing imposed on them," replied them," replied Mr. McCulloch, referring to Smith. Smith's record, which dates from 1927, lists two previous penitentiary sentences.
He told the court: "I am very sorry about the way I have lived. I went into the church because I was beat with liquor."
Harold D. Wilson, 25, of 448 Cannon street east, was bound over under heavy bond when he appeared for sentence on charges of forgery and uttering.
A charge of theft from his employer the Otis-Fensom Elevator Co., Ltd. was denied by James Kennedy, 41, of 87 Wexford avenue south. The hearing was adjourned to Tuesday at the request of the crown.
A breach of the Sales Tax Act charge, laid against William Vogl, 27, of 181 Jackson street west, was adjourned a week.
Told by Harry Trusdale, probation officer, that work had been obtained for them. His Worship suspended sentence on vagrancy charges for Henry Falstead, 53, of Kingston; John Grech, 41, of Welland; Percy Crosby, 50, of Toronto, and George Porter, 42, of Sarnia.
[Smith was 33, married, with four kids, and was an English immigrant who came to Canada in his infancy. He had been released from Collin's Bay Penitentiary in October 1941 and had been working as a pipe-fitters helper in a factory since then. He had also been in the penitentiary in the early 1930s, and before that several times in the reformatory. He was convict #7312 this time at Kingston, and worked in the Kitchen. The Minister of Justice decided to vary his sentence to two years in September 1943, probably on appeal, and he was transferred to the Guelph Reformatory and released in early 1945.]

Seriously, how demented and delusional are these ex Rangers players that the hacks have been bringing out, ever since we done Sevco in the last game?
Everyone has a theory on how to beat us.
James wrote about The Herald and The Times hiring Lee McCulloch; his particular genius suggestions for Sunday included playing Kenny Miller and “putting in a call to Walter.”
window._ttf = window._ttf || []; _ttf.push({ pid : 43792 ,lang : "en" ,slot : '.content .article-content > p,.teadsNative' ,format : "inread" ,mobile : false ,minSlot : 2 ,components : { skip: {delay : 0}} ,mutable : true ,css : "margin: 0px 0px 20px;" }); (function (d) { var js, s = d.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; js = d.createElement('script'); js.async = true; js.src = '//cdn.teads.tv/media/format.js'; s.parentNode.insertBefore(js, s); })(window.document);
Jesus wept. The paper is really getting its money’s worth there, eah?
Then it was the turn of fat Ally and his own fantasies; he came up with a list of players to challenge us.
How many players?
Apparently four would do it.
I think maybe it would. If they were the right players; Messi, for one. Plus a manager, plus a £100m influx of cash and a non criminal chairman.
Just to get on a par with us.
But McCoist’s suggestion was quickly taken up by the Record, and that rag then went on to list the four players who Sevco “could” sign that would allow them to challenge us.
And it’s as bad as you might have expected.
Now let’s look at them with real sense rather than Sevcosense :

in the book Because Internet, Gretchen McCulloch makes connections between misspellings, spell check software, and systems of control. as grammar is a system of control, and controlling rules, to intentionally mess up grammar or spelling can be seen as a form of resistance. where the English language was used to erase Irish Gaelic language and erase Irish identity, for example, there are writers such as James Joyce, who create their own language, a combination of dead languages and living languages, as a way of resisting colonial tongues. i wanted to show a language dying: english is presented as something close to code, but as it is being transmitted from this frozen brain, lots is lost, and the words begin to mean different things. “ofc i nw hv lurcht to retrospect” could be read as “of course i now have learnt to retrospect”, or as “of course, i have no worries, lurching to retrospect”, for example...

Last night we played our first match of this pre-season.
Brendan’s kid played some of the game, in the midfield.
We won by a single goal, a well taken controlled shot from James Forrest.
window._ttf = window._ttf || []; _ttf.push({ pid : 43792 ,lang : "en" ,slot : '.content .article-content > p,.teadsNative' ,format : "inread" ,mobile : false ,minSlot : 2 ,components : { skip: {delay : 0}} ,mutable : true ,css : "margin: 0px 0px 20px;" }); (function (d) { var js, s = d.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; js = d.createElement('script'); js.async = true; js.src = '//cdn.teads.tv/media/format.js'; s.parentNode.insertBefore(js, s); })(window.document);
The match was nothing special; the opposition played in what looked at some angles as if resembled a two bob Sevco home strip, especially when the meatier challenges were being thrown about. The team selection featured a high proportion of youth players, which was good to see, and Brendan will have had a chance to assess the chances of some of these kids making it.
Expect to see more of Tony Ralston, Jamie McCart and Calvin Miller in particular.
Brendan’s boy did okay in a revamped second half midfield, but the word from the camp is that he’s there only to get fitness prior to finding a club down south. This guy isn’t going to be our big signing before the qualifiers haha.
Overall this was a pretty standard pre-season game. There were no shocks, there was nothing too dramatic about it. Gerry McCulloch got on the pitch at the end to talk to the boss and Brendan seemed happy with what he’d seen.
He gave special praise to the kids, which they deserved.
Even as the match was finishing, word reached us that Celtic were favourites to sign the Ipswich youth player Kundai Benyu, who actually is highly regarded in England and stands a chance of cracking our first team sooner rather than later. But Brendan, although admitting interest, described him as “more of a project”.
Then he offered this tit-bit, to tease us with news of the real target.
“If I get the next signing in then I’ll be really happy,” he said. “It’ll give us real great power and strength and quality. Then we can push on and wait and see what becomes available.”
Intriguing or what? And the press has no idea at all who this player is.
It could be an exciting week ahead.
