Hill walk in the Ochils from  Tillicoultry. 

I’ve done a walk up a hill called Dumyat  above Bridge of Allan back in March 2021, the hardest part was the walk up the road towards Sheriffmuir, it was tiring, but  the hill itself was an easy walk,.

Since then I’ve not done any walks at all, and am quite unfit, not the best condition to do this steep walk up to The Law and onto Ben Cluech, the highest hill in Central Scotland at  721 metres, a good 301 metres higher than Dumyat. 

It is a very pretty start to the walk, parking next to an former woollen mill the cherry blossom is very welcoming,  Tillicoultry Burn flows fast down the  Mill Glen, it  once powered eight textile mills using a dam and lade (water channel) system, the walk skirts most of the burn that cascades doen the Glenand  features some lovely waterfalls, rising steeply as you head upwards.

Am quite tired now and will post more pics as we climbed towards the open hills, with brilliant views  behind us over the Forth Valley

A- and I dismounted to walk, I stiff and sore – at 7 ¾ pass 2 or 3 huts – at [Moenseter] at 7 57/.. – Soeter or Stol or house where the cattle is – Lade barn and the doorway and middle of the barn where one puts carriages is called Lōvĕ

August Monday 5 off at 9 50/.. from [Moenseter] – fine fir-wooded widish mountain vale with cottages scattered up and down and broadish shallow stream that comes down to Kongsberg – there at 10 57/.. nobody knew where the post station was and the woman took from me her 12sk. for ordering the horses and asked and got it again from Smith – pretty drive to D- just after leaving it again stream with the pretty lake – at Hougsund [Hokksund?] at 1 40/.. – over in 8 minutes – then greased the wheels which tho’ greased at Moenseter had begun to creak – very fine day – no horses – the forebud had passed only ½ hour before – sat writing in the carriage – then bought a plate of raspberries and ate them and then at 3 25/.. a drop or 2 of rain, and had the carriage and us in it drawn under shelter – off at last at 4 ¾ beautiful drive along the Dram river from Hougsund [Hokksund?] (or Eger the name of the village) to Drammen –

Woensdag 1 februari onthult burgemeester Pauline Bouvy-Koene een herdenkingsbord voor drie oorlogsslachtoffers op de begraafplaats in Haastrecht. Op het bord is een foto geplaatst en een korte levensgeschiedenis van: Willem Adrianus Uittenbogaard (1913 – 1940) Theodorus Franciscus Verkaik (1926 – 1945) Jan Mook (1921 – 1947) Willem Uittenbogaard Willem Uittenbogaard was op het moment dat de Duitsers ons land binnenvielen, gemobiliseerd in het Brabantse Mill. Hij maakte deel uit van het 3e Regiment Infanterie, een onderdeel van de Peel-Raamstelling. Op de eerste oorlogsdag reed bij Gennip een Duitse pantsertrein met drieëntwintig wagons ons land binnen. In die wagons zaten soldaten die waren vermomd als Nederlandse soldaten.  Ongehinderd reed de trein door naar het dorpje Zeeland. Hier werd een infanteriebataljon van ongeveer duizend Duitse manschappen afgezet. Als de trein terugrijdt hebben Nederlandse militairen versperringen op de rails geplaatst. Hierdoor ontspoorde de trein.  Het kwam tot heftige gevechten. Uiteindelijk staakten de Nederlandse soldaten de strijd en gaven ze zich over. Na de overgave maakte Willem, volgens een overlevende strijdmakker, een beweging, die door de vijand als weerstand werd beschouwd. Hij werd neergeschoten. Men had niet in de gaten dat Willem beschoten was. Hij zakte in elkaar, maar het leek alsof hij de veters van zijn schoenen vastmaakte. Een Duitse arts boog zich nog over hem heen. Het is vergeefs. Willem werd eerst in Mill begraven. Op 8 juli 1940 werd hij herbegraven in Haastrecht. Veel militairen waren aanwezig om hem de laatste eer te bewijzen. Theo Verkaik Theo Verkaik werd neergeschoten toen hij probeerde te ontkomen aan de Duitsers die op 17 februari 1945 een razzia hielden in Haastrecht. De Duitsers zochten waarschijnlijk mensen die zich niet hadden gemeld voor de Arbeitseinsatz. Theo woonde met zijn familie aan de Kleine Haven 21 in Haastrecht. Hij probeerde te vluchten via de polder en verstopte zich in de struiken langs de Bergvliet in polder Bilwijk. Vergeefs, de Duitsers vonden hem toch. Theo werd in zijn buik geschoten. Hij overlijdt op 21 januari 1945 in diaconessenhuis De Wijk in Gouda aan zijn verwondingen.   Jan Mook Jan Mook is een indirect slachtoffer van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Op 17 januari 1947 werkte Jan als beroepssergeant bij de Nederlandse Springstoffenfabriek De Krijgsman in Muiden. Hij hield toezicht op het opruimen van zwaar oorlogsmateriaal uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Dat werd naar deze fabriek gebracht om het kruit te winnen en de behuizing om te smelten.  Bij het uitladen van een vrachtwagen ging het mis. Twee karretjes met op scherp staande munitie botsen tegen elkaar. Hierdoor liet één van de soldaten een granaat vallen en de lading ontplofte. Zelfs een opslaggebouw waarin 500 kg kruit lag opgeslagen ging de lucht in. Naast drie medewerkers van kruitfabriek De Krijgsman komen veertien medewerkers van de Mijn Opruiming Dienst om het leven, waaronder Jan Mook. Op woensdag 22 januari 1947 is Jan met militaire eer bijgezet in het graf van zijn zwager Willem Adrianus Uittenbogaard. Ook zijn naam zal op het Herdenkingsbord staan. Herdenkingsborden De gemeente Krimpenerwaard hoopt dat er met het plaatsen van herdenkingsborden blijvende aandacht is voor de oorlogsslachtoffers en hun verhalen. Eerder werden borden geplaatst op de begraafplaats in Krimpen a/d Lek, Lekkerkerk en Gouderak. Het is de bedoeling dat ook oorlogsslachtoffers op de overige begraafplaatsen in de gemeente een herdenkingsbord krijgen. Om hen te eren en nooit te vergeten. De onthulling van het Herdenkingsbord in Haastrecht wordt mede gedaan door de heer W.A. Uittenbogaard, zoon van Willem Uittenbogaard en de heer J. Verkaik, neef van Theo Verkaik.
