Representative Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican, took to Twitter on Sunday afternoon to complain about the Black National Anthem being performed during the Super Bowl.
Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph is slated to perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing," colloquially known as the Black National Anthem, ahead of the Sunday night football game. The song, written more than 100 years ago, emerged as a rallying cry during the civil rights movement, according to the NAACP. The NFL began including the song in its games following the Black Lives Matter protests that occurred during the summer of 2020, but the move has faced backlash from some conservatives.
Boebert became the latest prominent Republican to criticize the National Football League (NFL) over the song's inclusion, which will be performed alongside the "Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful." The GOP lawmaker accused the league of attempting to "divide" Americans by including the Black National Anthem in the performance lineup.
"America only has ONE NATIONAL ANTHEM," she tweeted. "Why is the NFL trying to divide us by playing multiple!? Do football, not wokeness."
Tumblr media
Critics argued, however, that Boebert's tweet was more divisive than the inclusion of the performance. Condé Nast editor Luke Zaleski accused Boebert of "gaslighting" viewers.
"The gaslighting is the fact that she's using the concept of unity to divide. She's doing what she's accusing the NFL of. It's a fake grievance contrived to irk and produce the effect of further fracturing society," Zaleski tweeted.
"It's black history month. The song is meaningful to African Americans. It's also a historic game with 2 black quarterbacks, the first time ever. Get over yourself and your ridiculous white grievances. If you don't like it, don't watch. Simple," another Twitter user tweeted on Sunday in response to Boebert.
Tumblr media
Other conservatives have previously criticized the NFL over the song. In 2021, Fox News host Sean Hannity decried a performance as an attempt to "inject politics into sports." Several conservative pundits also complained when Vanessa Williams performed the song during a PBS Fourth of July special that same year.
WHAT IS THE BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM?
NAACP leader James Weldon Smith first wrote "Lift Every Voice and Sing" in 1900. His brother, John Rosamond Johnson, composed the music for its lyrics, according to the NAACP.
The song was first performed by students at a segregated school in Jacksonville, Florida, to celebrate the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who presided over the emancipation of slaves during the American Civil War, according to the NAACP.
The song became a landmark of African American culture. According to Time magazine, it was performed during meetings in which civil rights leaders planned the Montgomery Bus Boycott and has been quoted in speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Following the 2020 racial protests after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police, the NFL sought to confront what many players have described as systemic racism following years of protests.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told The New York Times in 2021 that the inclusion of the song is "an opportunity to highlight messages that are important to the league, players and personnel and our communities."
"We've seen tremendous work done by our players to make an impact, and we can increase that through the high-visibility platform that the NFL provides," he said.
Newsweek reached out to Boebert's press office for further comment.

The second suspect accused of several stabbings in Saskatchewan has died after being arrested Wednesday following a three-day manhunt, officials said.
Canadian authorities located and took Myles Sanderson into custody, the Saskatchewan RCMP said. Shortly after his arrest, he went into medical distress and was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the RCMP said Wednesday night.
Brothers Myles Sanderson, 30, and Damien Sanderson, 31, are suspected of carrying out the stabbing spree that killed 10 people and injured 19 in the Indigenous communities of James Smith Cree Nation and the town of Weldon, in Saskatchewan, on Sunday, authorities said.
Damien Sanderson was found dead on Monday in a field near the stabbing sites with "visible injuries."Canada stabbing attack: These are the victims who died in the massacre
Police in Saskatoon confirmed to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that they had been searching for Myles Sanderson since May, when he violated parole by failing to meet with his parole officer. He was classified as "unlawfully at large," Saskatoon police told CBC.
Myles Sanderson was placed on parole after serving a nearly five-year federal sentence for assault, robbery, mischief and uttering threats, according to CBC.
Authorities launched a multi-day manhunt for the Sandersons on Sunday.
The Melfort RCMP canceled its Dangerous Persons Alert upon Myles Sanderson's arrest, saying the public is no longer at risk.
Tumblr media
Investigators believe some of the victims were "targeted" while others were "attacked randomly," RCMP Commanding Officer Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said earlier this week.
Authorities are investigating the motive for the attacks.
The Saskatchewan RCMP got its first 911 call about a stabbing on the James Smith Cree Nation, about 20 miles from Weldon, around 5:40 a.m. local time on Sunday. Within minutes, police received several more calls from multiple locations. In total, victims were found at 13 different locations across the sparsely populated reserve and in the town, according to Blackmore.
Officials released the identities of the victims killed in the string of stabbings on Wednesday.

[ad_1] Parole Board of Canada employees were fearful of threats after it was revealed a mass killer in Saskatchewan was on statutory release at the time of last year's rampage, emails show. The emails in partially redacted documents, obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act, show staff at the Parole Board of Canada were cautioned about their safety and told to remain vigilant following threats made to a Saskatchewan office after the stabbings.Eleven people were killed and 17 were injured in the attacks on the James Smith Cree Nation and in the nearby village of Weldon on Sept. 4, 2022.Myles Sanderson, 32, was arrested four days later and died in police custody. It was widely reported during the manhunt that Sanderson, who had a record of violent assaults, had received statutory release, which kicks in when an offender has served two-thirds of a prison sentence.Eleven people were killed in the Sept. 4, 2022 stabbings. Most were from James Smith Cree Nation. One man was from Weldon, Sask. (CBC)The killings raised questions over why Sanderson was released and how he managed to remain free in the months leading up to the attacks. Emails show that along with increased public attention and criticism, the parole board received "a few concerning phone calls" about Sanderson's release, which were reported to Saskatoon police.Emails to Jennifer Oades, the chairperson of the parole board, on Sept. 8 note a phone call to the Saskatchewan parole board office. The contents of the four-minute call are largely redacted, but it prompted swift action inside the parole board."This is quite worrisome," Oades wrote in an email about the call.Staff advised to be vigilant: emailsStaff were notified in an email later that day to take action to ensure their safety. They were advised to use alternate routes to work or change the times they would leave. The email said staff should leave the building in groups or consider working from home."Please remember to be vigilant and keep an eye out for any suspicious activities or individuals in your surroundings," the email to staff said.It also cautioned people to make their employee identification cards or lanyards less visible and to avoid using branded items like coffee mugs. It said they should revisit having social media accounts that might identify them as a parole board employee."Given recent events, it is recommended that you reduce your visibility as a PBC employee while outside of secure work zones," the email said. One email sent to Oades two days after the stabbings expressed shock at the fact Sanderson had been released, saying the parole board needed to answer to the public."How many more of these (Parole Board of Canada) mistakes are out there?"The parole board said in a statement that it sometimes receives feedback that contains "abusive" language over its decisions. In the case of the worrying phone call, the board said local police contacted the individual and "determined that there had been no intent to threaten the board."Parole board employees were also closely watching news reports about Sanderson's release, emails show. They noted the backlash and shared concerns about the public's understanding of statutory release, which imposes conditions on offenders to help with their reintegration into society.Sanderson's parole documents show he had a lengthy criminal history, including 59 convictions as an adult. He received statutory release in August 2021 from his first federal prison sentence of more than four years.Four months into his freedom, Sanderson was found to have been lying about his living arrangements and his release was suspended. In February 2022, the parole board cancelled that suspension and Sanderson again received statutory release with a reprimand. Three months later, however, the Correctional Service of Canada deemed him to be unlawfully at large and a parole officer issued a warrant for his apprehension. After the deadly stabbings, then-public safety minister Marco Mendicino weighed in on Sanderson's release from prison, saying "there were a number of significant flaws in the system here that have to be addressed."The Correctional Service of Canada and the Parole Board of Canada launched a joint investigation into Sanderson's release. One briefing note shows a written report was due no later than March, but in separate statements both the parole board and prison service say they expect to share the results this fall."The length of time to complete an investigation varies according to the complexities of the case and whether there is an ongoing police investigation or criminal proceeding," wrote parole board spokeswoman Iulia Pescarus Popa. The joint investigation is intended to look into why and how Sanderson was released from prison and whether the proper processes were followed.Betty Pottruff, the parole board member who signed off on the Sanderson decision, voiced concern about the heightened interest and her own safety as the joint investigation progressed. In an email in January, she requested to have the assistance of a department of justice lawyer for the joint investigation."There was already a threat toward board members that caused concern in the fall and as emotions resurface, the risks continue or increase," Pottruff said."I expect that this focus on me as an individual board member will continue and increase as the reviews go forward." A massive manhunt is underway for two men suspected of mass stabbings that left at least 10 people dead and around 15 wounded in Canada.
Police are hunting for Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson after the pair were named as suspects following a series of attacks across the James Smith Cree Nation, a remote indigenous community, and the nearby village of Weldon in Saskatchewan in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The attacks began shortly before 5:40 a.m., police said, as emergency call center workers began receiving calls for help across 13 locations. James Smith Cree Nation has around 2,400 residents, while Weldon has 200.
A state of emergency was declared in the James Smith Cree Nation, and tens of thousands of people were warned to stay inside by a "dangerous person alert" sent to every cell phone in the provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta, which read: "Do not leave a secure location. Use caution allowing others into your residence. DO NOT APPROACH suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitch hikers."
Rhonda Blackmore, Commanding Officer for Saskatchewan RCMP, said some people may have been targeted, while others are believed to have been "attacked randomly." Police have not speculated on a motive for the stabbings.
At a press briefing on Sunday evening, police said there may be further injured victims of whom they were currently unaware.
No victims have been publicly identified by authorities.
Local media reports have named some of the victims after their loved ones spoke publicly. Weldon widower Wes Petterson, 77, was a "good, kind hearted man," his friend Ruby Works told the Associated Press. Mother-of-two Lana Head and her unnamed male partner are also dead, her ex-partner told the APTN news network.
Local reporter Logan Stein told the BBC that the alleged knifemen appeared to have gone door-to-door attacking residents.
Newsweek has reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for further information. More details about the crime, the suspects, and the victims are expected to be released later on Monday.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the atrocity as "heartbreaking" and added: "I am shocked and devastated by the horrific attacks today. Those responsible for today's abhorrent attacks must be fully brought to justice."
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, which represents First Nations groups in Saskatchewan, released a statement saying: "Our hearts break for all those impacted."
Who Are Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson?
Authorities have not yet revealed the nature of the relationship between Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson, who share a surname. Nor have they revealed many details about the pair.
Damien Sanderson is 31. He was described by police as 5ft 7in tall and weighing 155lbs, with black hair and brown eyes.
Myles Sanderson is 30. He was described as 6ft 1in tall and weighing 240lbs, with brown hair and eyes.
It was thought they may have been travelling together in a black Nissan Rogue with SK license plate 119 MPI. They were last sighted by members of the public early on Sunday afternoon in Regina.
Members of the public have been warned not to approach the men if they see them, but instead to seek safety immediately and call 911.
In April 2020, a 51-year-old gunman apparently impersonating a Mountie killed 16 people in Nova Scotia in a 12-hour period before he was shot by police. It remains Canada's worst mass shooting.
The incident helped push the murder rate in Canada that year to its highest level since 2005, according to Statistics Canada, at 1.95 murders per 100,000 people. According to FBI data, the murder rate in the U.S. in 2020 was around 6.5 homicides per 100,000 people.
