COLD BLOWS THE WIND - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Lion Heart Distribution
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: In a fateful night, Dean and Tasha's transgressions began with the reckless decision to drive under the influence of alcohol. Their actions escalated when they struck a jogger with their vehicle. Compounding their mistakes, they drove to an isolated house, intending to dispose of the body. As tensions mounted between them, they struggled to find common ground. Their situation takes a sinister turn when a mysterious visitor arrives, offering to keep their secret in exchange for protection. This encounter plunges their already tumultuous night into deeper despair. It remains unclear whether Dean and Tasha can overcome their differences and return home safely or if the rift between them will lead to even more gruesome mistakes.
REVIEW: In COLD BLOWS THE WIND, filmmaker Eric Williford crafts a captivating and eerie universe that mirrors the unsettling ambiance of a Grimm Brothers horror story. Drawing inspiration from classic horror films, he reshapes familiar tropes against the backdrop of a tumultuous relationship on the brink of collapse. This unique blend of horror and dark comedy is not quite Sam Raimi, and still results in a captivating and entertaining experience.
In Williford's screenplay, the skillfully crafted premise lays the foundation for the unraveling of Tasha and Dean's relationship,a crack that widens uncontrollably as the plot unfolds. The location acts as a supernatural focal point, intensifying the mounting chaos and driving a wedge between the couple as they navigate their individual crises. The question of whether their doom was predetermined arises, as two distinct supernatural forces exert their influence on them. Through their individual character arcs, Tasha and Dean offer insight into their roles. Just when the viewer believes they have a firm grasp on the narrative, Williford flips it, leaving the audience dumbfounded. He employs engaging dialogue and an effective simplicity in portraying these supernatural entities and forces. The tale begins with a poem that sets the tone for the narrative, which I found particularly appealing.
Regarding the practicality of Dean's decision to dispose of the jogger a second time, I have a question. While it's possible that he was overwhelmed by the challenges he and Tasha were facing, burying the jogger again seemed counterintuitive.
The film's small crew is evident from the short end credits. The film opens with a poem used to create a montage introducing the characters just before the story begins. The narrative commences with the couple's arrival at Dean's parents' home, set in a captivating location that enhances the film's tone with unique elements. The atmosphere is meticulously crafted through lighting, smoke and mirrors, in-camera techniques, and practical effects. The blood and ooze emitted by the entity contribute to the film's gross factor. Alberto Anaya's score complements the atmosphere while adding a touch of levity to the couple's arguments.
In COLD BLOWS THE WIND, the ensemble cast displays remarkable balance and chemistry. Victoria Vertuga as Tasha and Danell Leyva as Dean deliver a captivating portrayal of a couple's deteriorating relationship. Their arguments are brilliantly choreographed through dialogue, facial expressions, and body language, intensifying the palpable tension and stress as their bond unravels. Jamie Bernadette, as Briar, brings her experience in genre films to this role, effortlessly transforming from victim to predator, becoming the dominant threat in the narrative.
COLD BLOWS THE WIND, a mesmerizing reimagining of classic genre themes, skillfully blends fairy tale elements with "Tales From the Crypt" type motifs. The film's captivating atmosphere, achieved through masterful filmmaking and a well-chosen location, ensures an engaging viewing experience, offering a mix of laughter and thrills. The talented cast delivers exceptional performances, bringing Eric Williford’s script to life in a captivating manner. Having encountered his work for the first time, I am eager to delve deeper into his previous short films and television projects to explore more of his storytelling prowess.

Sinbad and the War of the Furies (2016)
My rating: 5/10
Not bad, for the Asylum - An Attempt was clearly made, and so we have some actual characters and a plot, but it still never really gets above mediocre.
