Week 4
Class Reflection
This week we went through the presentation. I aimed to do “astonishing” but my understanding was more like “surprise”. It’s not easy to create a 3-minute sound clip for a beginner so I decide to use existed music/sound.
Research
i.Academic Research
Sievers, B. R., & Wheatley, T. (2021). Rapid dissonant grunting, or, but why does music sound the way it does? The Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 44, e111–e111. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0140525X20001284
“…we propose that connections between sound, movement, and emotion are an additional source of functional fixedness. If one function of emotion is to bias agents toward context-appropriate action (Frijda, Kuipers, & Ter Schure, 1989), then the path from action predisposition to functional fixedness is short. If high-arousal states make characteristically low-arousal movement difficult (and vice versa), and if high-arousal movements produce sounds that distinguish them from low-arousal movements, then sounds should credibly signal both the movement that produced them and the sound producer's state of mind. Rapid dissonant grunting is, therefore, bad lullaby material – not because it fails to signal attention, proximity, or responsiveness, but because it signals that the caregiver is in a high-arousal state inappropriate for the context (e.g., bedtime).”
“Supporting this account, we have shown that music and movement share a dynamic structure, such that the same combinations of music and movement features express the same emotions across cultures (Sievers, Polansky, Casey, & Wheatley, 2013). Furthermore, harsh timbres and spiky movement contours (both quantified using the spectral centroid) are reliably used in the expression and perception of high-arousal emotion (Sievers, Lee, Haslett, & Wheatley, 2019). Interestingly, Filippi et al. (2017) have shown that harsh timbres are used to express high-arousal by many species of terrestrial vertebrate, suggesting the sound–emotion connection is evolutionarily ancient, fitting the proposed timeline of the credible signaling hypothesis.”
ii. Creative Practice
Light Painting by Janne Parviainen
"Light painting and light drawing are ways of photography where photo is manipulated with different kind of light sources while the camera is exposing on a long exposure time in a dark or lowly lit place. The idea of the light painting is that all photos should be straight from the camera, without any post editing such as Photoshop, etc."
Janne Parviainen chooses an abandoned mansion forest as his shooting location. He paints suspicious characters and skeletons with colored flashlights to prompt audience inquiry and speculation.
iii. Technique Research

Setting luminance differences between primary and secondary figures to highlight the major.

QUICK CHECK-UP: PELICANS
2019-20: 14TH PELICANS
In Finland we say “mennä penkin alle” (go under the seat), which means having failed something, and that’s exactly how to explain what Lahden Pelicans’ season was like. The team was third in the league after the first few weeks and then belly flopped all the way down to 12th place and never dug its way back up on top. Former NHLer Ville Nieminen was fired from his coaching position in the middle of the season and interim coach Jesse Welling was never able to pull the team back from the hole.
2020-21 SEASON
What a freaking bomb did Pelicans drop just on the eve of the new season by acquiring Ryan Lasch into the team. Lasch may have game by game based contract as he has been rumoured to be looking into “money contracts” from Central Europe. But in the meantime, he will be in Lahti showing off why he is considered one of the best players in Europe. Pelicans’ new 37-year-old head coach Tommi Niemelä is also quite a new face in the Liiga scene, but he is no stranger to winning championships with the national U18 team.

ILLUMINATE
Several weeks ago, the class was given a brief, Illuminate or Painting with Light.  Painting with Light is a technique where you illuminate parts of your scene with another light source, this adds colour to certain parts of the scene and is done best when using a long exposure (https://www.photographymad.com).
Tumblr media
(http://www.hannuhuhtamo.com/light-art-photography/)
this image is by Hannu Huhtamo from Helsinki, he is well known his symmetry.  His work is filled with glowing structures that sets him apart from other photographers who apply this method.  his work has an almost alien appearance or something that you would even see at the bottom of the ocean.  this image appeals to me as it is comforting to look at because of its symmetrical value.  it reminds me quite a bit of a jelly fish swimming in the sea or rather floating in the sea.
Tumblr media
(https://lightpaintingphotography.com/light-painting-artist/featured-artist-2/dana-maltby/)
this is image is by Dana Maltby also known as TCB.  he is thought to be ahead of his time with regards to light painting photography (https://www.lightpaintingphotography.com). this is quite impressive as Dana only began serious photography several years ago, which to me shows a natural talent and gift. not only is Dana known for is amazing work but he also  is not shy in giving away his techniques.  this image is very alien looking or spaceship, on an intereview he was asked if he believed in aliens, his answer ‘I am an alien’ (https//:www.lightpainting.com).
Tumblr media
(https://lightpaintingphotography.com/light-painting-artist/featured-artist-2/janne-parviainen/)
this image is by Janne Parviainen and he is well know for light painting figures and has recently been producing skeleton imagery (https://lightpaintingphotography.com). Janne has a firm belief that post production should not be used to enhance the photo, it should just come straight from camera (https://www.jannepaint.com).  this image appeals to be because there is a feeling of calm from the image.  on the actual figure you  can see the circular motion of the light source going round each part of the body, however, when you look at the reflection it looks like icicles.
Tumblr media
(https://petapixel.com/2013/08/27/10-amazing-light-painting-photographers/)
this was taken by a light painting photographer by the name of Michael Ross, his images look fun and interesting, however in order to achieve these effortless looking shots takes it takes precise control of the light source (http://mrossphoto.com/bio/).  like Dana maltby, Ross is not secretive about his techniques, in fact he provides light painting sessions.  I am simply drawn to his image for the sheer fun aspect and the cleverness as to how it was achieved.  my guess is that, again with using a very long shutter speed and with the help of one or two people they have moved different colours of light source from side to side.  the end ghost that has been shot, with bits in the air may have been achieved by just flashing on and off a light source.
Tumblr media
(https://denniscalvert.net/light-painting)
this was shot by Dennis Calvert, a photographer from Alabama, as with Janne Parvianen, Calvert does use any post production, his images come straight from camera (https://denniscalvert.net/). I like this light painting image because it has been shot in nature giving it an air of mysticism.  the sparkling lights, like fireflies, the halo effect with the perfect circular motion round the head of the model adds to the idea of the angelic like figure protecting nature.  what I find really clever, and bearing in mind no photoshop has been used to create this, is the reflection of the halo effect in the water.  yes if is different as a result of the ripples in the water but so too is the colour.  what I find also clever is that the eye is drawn to the vivid green trees that can be viewed through the halo, what secrects are there to be discovered within the protected forest.  overall I find this image to be enchanting to look at.
