Two Indonesian Super Tucano Aircraft crashed in East Java, killing four onboard

Some sad bit of News today after not just one but TWO of the EMB-314 Super Tucano Aircraft of the Indonesian Air Force (IdAF) crashed in East Java, Indonesia while conducting a Training Exercise. Each Aircraft can seat a Crew of two, and all four Pilots were killed in the two crashes.

Both Aircraft reportedly crashed into the Mountainside in two different Locations, and all the Bodies and Flight Recorders have already been retrieved which will also be used for the Investigation. All the Pilots were high ranking Officers holding the Ranks of Majors and Colonels.

These Aircraft are very similar to the A29B Super Tucano Aircraft of the Philippine Air Force (PAF), but they acquired theirs much earlier than us, back in 2010 while we only bought ours a Decade later in 2020

On the first month of my sabbatical, I am elated to have an article published in Paramita: Historical Studies Journal, a Scopus-indexed journal published by the History Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Semarang in collaboration with Masyarakat Sejarawan Indonesia (Indonesian Historical Society).

Universitas Negeri Semarang is located in Semarang, the bustling capital and largest city of Central Java. Once a significant port during the Dutch colonial period, Semarang remains a regional hub and port in contemporary times. The city has been honored as the cleanest tourist destination in Southeast Asia by the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard (ACTCS) for 2020–2022.

I co-authored an article entitled "The Colonial Sugar Industry in Indonesia and the Philippines: A Comparative Perspective" with Nawiyanto Nawiyanto (Universitas Jember, Indonesia) and Nina Mutiara Calvaryni (Wageningen University and Research, Netherlands). Our study attempts to outline broadly the early development of the sugar industry in Java and the Philippines, followed by a discussion on the choice of production technology and the performance of the sugar industry in the interwar period.

Part of my interest in sugar comes from the legacy of Brigido Tamayo Capili (+), my paternal grandfather. He was a World War I (1914-1918) veteran in Europe who later became an executive of Wespacor, a subsidiary of Compania Maritima, and a stockholder of the Pre-World War II Pampanga Sugar Development Company (PASUDECO). Before he retired as Assistant Government Corporate Counsel, my dad, Virgilio Martinez Capili (+), handled cases of government-owned and controlled corporations from the 1950s till the early 1990s, including the Philippine Sugar Institute (Philsugin) and its reorganization as the Philippine Sugar Commission (Philsucom). As a child, I cultivated a strange affinity with documents in my grandpa's (and later, my dad’s) office, many relating to sugar, initially by memorizing technical words and phrases to improve my vocabulary.

In addition, few may know that while my Ph.D. from the ANU is on Literature, Screen, and Theatre Studies, my academic department was situated at the Division of Pacific and Asian History (PAH) of the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies (RSPAS). I was trained in literary history there, but I was also exposed to comparative and multidisciplinary approaches to the study of narratives. Aside from my MA in Comparative Literature degree from UP, I have an MPhil in Social Anthropology from Cambridge. I specialized in economic anthropology and wrote a thesis on the Relocalization of Japanese Immigrants in Davao from 1900-1946.

Then and now, I always believed that creativity and innovation thrive when boundaries are pushed and unconventional methods are embraced, which currently holds for the study of literatures and cultures, where multidisciplinary research and non-traditional approaches play a vital role in breaking new ground.

Traditionally, the study of literatures and cultures has been confined to the arts and letters, focusing primarily on textual analysis and literary theory. While this approach has yielded significant insights, it often fails to capture the full complexity and richness of human experiences. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, researchers may draw from various fields, such as anthropology, economics, history, psychology, sociology, and even the natural and physical sciences, to further our understanding of intersections between literatures, cultures, and the human condition.

Multidisciplinary research may encourage scholars to explore new angles, perspectives, and methodologies. It may allow for a more holistic understanding of literary texts, transcending the limitations of a single discipline. For example, by incorporating psychological theories, researchers can analyze characters' motivations and emotional experiences in short fiction, shedding light on the complexities of human behavior.

Venturing into non-traditional approaches allows researchers to address contemporary issues and explore emerging cultural phenomena. Literatures and cultures constantly evolve, influenced by technology, globalization, and other shifts. To effectively engage with these changes, artists and scholars must embrace innovative approaches to bridging the gap between traditional and emerging forms of expression.

Douglas A-24 Banshee (AAF version of the Navy SBD Dauntless) by Wonder Years Of Aviation Via Flickr: The U.S. Army Air Forces sent 52 A-24 Banshees in crates to the Philippines in the fall of 1941 to equip the 27th Bombardment Group, whose personnel were sent separately. However, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, these bombers were diverted to Australia and the 27th BG fought on the Bataan Peninsula as infantry. While in Australia the aircraft were reassembled for flight to the Philippines but their missing parts, including solenoids, trigger motors and gun mounts delayed their shipment. Plagued with mechanical problems, the A-24s were diverted to the 91st Bombardment Squadron and designated for assignment to Java Island instead. Referring to themselves as "Blue Rock Clay Pigeons" (after a brand of trap shooting targets), the 91st BS attacked the enemy harbor and airbase at Bali and damaged or sank numerous ships around Java.After the Japanese downed two A-24s and damaged three so badly that they could no longer fly, the 91st received orders to evacuate Java in early March. The A-24s remaining in Australia were assigned to the 8th Bombardment Squadron of 3d Bombardment Group, to defend New Guinea. On 29 July 1942, seven A-24s attacked a convoy off Buna, but only one survived: the Japanese shot down five of them and damaged the sixth so badly that it did not make it back to base. Regarded by many pilots as too slow, short ranged and poorly armed, the remaining A-24s were relegated to non-combat missions. In the U.S., the A-24s became training aircraft or towed targets for aerial gunnery training. The more powerful A-24B was used later against the Japanese forces in the Gilbert Islands. From December 1943 until March 1944, the 531st Fighter Squadron of the 7th Air Force flew A-24Bs from Makin Island in the Gilbert Islands against Japanese controlled islands in the Marshall Islands. The A-24Bs were then withdrawn from combat. The A-24B (equivalent to the U.S. Navy SBD-5, with the omission of the arrestor hook) arrived in 1943 with the more powerful 1,200-hp Wright R-1820-60 Cyclone engine, a more powerful engine than either the A-24 or A-24A. As a result, the A-24B could fly slightly faster and higher than the earlier models. The A-24B lacked the small air intake on the top of the engine cowling present on the earlier models and that is an easy way to distinguish the B model. The 407th Bomb Group, assigned to the 11th Air Force, flew A-24Bs against the Japanese held island of Kiska, Alaska, during July and August 1943. A handful of A-24s survived in the inventory of the USAAF long enough to be taken over by the Air Force (USAF) when that service became independent of the Army in September 1947. The USAF established a new designation system for its aircraft, eliminating the "A-" (for attack) category; all of the single-engined "A-" aircraft were given "F-" (for fighter) nomenclature (or were determined to be obsolete and scrapped); thus the few remaining A-24 Banshees became known as F-24 Banshees, soldiering on in a reserve role until 1950 when they were scrapped.

Always take off your shoes before entering a house even if you are told not to.

Patting anyone on the head is considered very rude.

If your baby is less than six months old, don’t let it touch the ground.

Don’t use your foot to point.

Don’t hang your shirt or any clothing on a temple wall.

Don’t walk under a washing line that has underwear hanging on it if is then above your head.

When hanging up laundry put your underwear on the lowest rung.

When at ceremonies, weddings etc, sit lower than honored guests, priests and sacred objects.

Don’t step in front of someone if you can’t avoid it, adopt a submissive posture and ask forgiveness.

Never step over a sacred object or offering, be careful of this as some masks at ceremonies can be sacred. When at special events and in doubt, just don’t do it.

You can sit on cushions, but not on a pillow.

Sleep with your head pointed towards the east or north, pointed to the mountains.

When visiting temples or less casual places, wear long pants or a sarong with a selendang (scarf like cloth) tied around the waist.

It may seem sexist to many women, but it is considered extremely taboo to enter a temple while menstruating.

Getting to Bali

By Air

The main international airport is Bali’s Ngurah Rai and is a gateway to many Indonesian countries. The main airline operating here is Garuda Indonesia as well as 12 other international airlines. Ngurah Rai is situated in the south area of the island and traveling to the majority of the popular resorts will not take more that 30 minutes. If you are staying in one of the northern resorts like Ubud expect a drive of over an hour.

Daily direct flights are available from Singapore on Garuda Indonesia, and Singapore Airlines.MAS and Garuda operate direct flights    from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and from Hong Kong with Garuda and Cathay Pacific. Direct flights are also available from Bangkok with Thai International and Qantas. UTA flies direct from Paris, KLM fly from Amsterdam via Medan, Garuda fly from Japan and Taiwan and Garuda and Qantas fly from the Australian cities of Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns and Adelaide.

By Road or Rail from Java

Trains and buses from Java stop at Banyuwangi and a 24 hour ferry transports cars and passengers to Gilimanuk, where buses will take passengers to Denspasar.

By Sea

International cruise ships and yachts use the Bali seaports of Benoa and Padangbai. Padangbai is mostly used by the larger luxury cruise ships as Benoa is relatively small. From Lombok’s port of Lembar a ferry service is available twice daily to Padagbai and from Benoa harbor to Lembar you can catch a hydrofoil.

Bali is the departure point for cruises to Lombok, and the nearby island that people are beginning to discover are very remote an unspoiled by tourism. If you intend to visit here make sure that you consult your doctor as this is known as a high malaria area.

As with all countries, laws can change overnight and it is important to have the latest up to date information before travelling to a foreign country.

The Laws of Indonesia and Bali

Every major town has a police station called Resort Polisi. The Traffic Police Office is located in Denpasar, but its office hours are only 8:00 am to 12:00 noon, Monday to Saturday.

All narcotics are illegal in all Indonesian countries and using, selling or buying any drugs can result in huge fines, prison or even the death penalty. If you are caught even your own government will be unlikely to help you, so stay clear of this type of recreation.

If you lose your passport, report it immediately to the local Police station and ask for a letter with the report details. Trying to get a replacement passport can be difficult if you don’t produce this letter.

You can drive if you have an international license or one issued in one of the ASEAN countries; Brunei ,Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam. If you want to get a motor bike or car license your application is made through the Komdak Lalulintas in Jalan Seruni. A driving test is theoretically compulsory, however you will find people who will be able to fast track your application for you, obviously for a fee.

Entry and Exit Requirements

Visa and other entry and exit conditions (such as currency, customs and quarantine regulations) change regularly. Contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Indonesia for the most up-to-date information.

You should ensure you have the correct, current visa at all times, otherwise you may be fined, jailed, deported or banned from re-entering Indonesia for a period of time.

Your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from your date of arrival. Visitors may be granted a seven day visa on arrival for a fee of USD10 or a 30 day visa on arrival for a fee of USD25. Both visas are non-extend-able and non-transferable. The period of stay for visas is calculated from the day of arrival. For example, if a tourist with a seven day visa arrived on a Sunday, they must depart Indonesia the following Saturday. If the tourist departed on the following Sunday, they would be considered to have overstayed their visa. This principle also applies to 30 day visas. Fines are imposed for each additional day in Indonesia.

If you are staying in private accommodation, you are required to register with the local Rukun Tertangga (RT) Office and the local police when you arrive. If you plan to be in Indonesia for more than 90 days, you must register with the local immigration office and hold the correct visa.

Make sure your passport has at least six months’ validity and carry copies of a recent passport photo with you in case you need a replacement passport while overseas.

When planning a trip to a tropical place like Bali, all types of thoughts will be conjured up in your head of the possible dangers that await you and how to deal with them. The major concerns that people face are the safety of the food and water, local violence crime rate, the transportation and any common or dangerous tropical diseases. Reduce health risks before traveling to Bali.

Before trips to Bali consult your doctor to find out what the current health situation is in the area you are going to stay in and find out if there are any vaccinations required before you leave. Bali is a tropical region and does have some nasty bugs floating or flying around so it is important to know exactly where you are going to be traveling to and let your doctor know. Once you have arrived in Bali it is important to stay in the areas that you have planned to as some of the islands have different health risks that you may not be aware or prepared for. For example Lombok is considered as a higher malaria risk area than the main island of Bali and if you have not been taking malaria tablets it is not advisable to go there.

The more common vaccinations that you would be given are polio, cholera, typhoid, hepatitis A & B and malaria or whatever is prevalent at that specific time. If Bali is a regular holiday place for your vacations, it is important to visit your doctor every time you plan on going as new diseases can spring up very quickly.

Bali Travel insurance.

Traveling is risky, especially when you are going a long distance to a foreign country. Insurance won’t take the risk factor out but will help you if you do end up needing medical attention due to an accident or some disease. For short holidays, insurance is not that expensive compared to the peace of mind that it offers and you can then get on with enjoying your holiday without worrying.

Drinking Water in Bali.

Tap water is unsafe to drink in Bali. Although the quality of water throughout the island varies greatly, some coming piped, some from a well, one should always assume it is unsafe to drink without boiling. People living in Bali shower with the local water, brushing teeth etc. with no ill effects, still your drinking water should be bottled water. No matter where you stay, the tap water is unsafe for drinking, some of the luxury hotels have signs on the basins advising that their water is safe, but it is not worth the risk to drink it. Bottled water is freely available and is cheap. Even when brushing your teeth use the bottled water. When staying in tourist areas, all food is prepared with bottled water, so you are safe to eat everything including the delicious salads. Ice from these establishments is also made from bottled water and is safe, but when traveling outside tourist resorts avoid the ice and only buy drinks that are in refrigerators, not in cooler boxes covered with water and ice. All fruit and vegetables can be eaten without any worries as long as you use bottled water if you are going to make some of your own meals.

Bali Belly is not ordinary Diarrhea.

Bali is renowned for an acute gastroenteritis infection that should not be mistaken for mere holiday runs. You will know if you have caught this as you will have both diarrhea and vomiting at the same time and will feel like hell. The best thing to do is seek medical advice from a local doctor who will prescribe the needed medication to get you back up on your feet usually within 24 hours. If you do not get treatment then this can last for weeks and spoil your holiday and worst case scenario you will end up in hospital.

Small cuts & scrapes.

Small cuts can develop into serious infections due to the hot humid conditions very quickly. Wash out any cuts you get with clean bottled water and apply some Betadine. Allow the cut to air dry rather than putting a plaster on as this will make it “sweat” and take longer to heal.

Carry a first aid kit.

Learn how to use a first aid kit and take your own one with you, trying to find one locally is very difficult and those that are available are very limited. Don’t pack it in your hand luggage as it may be confiscated due to the sharp instruments.

Traveling for Medical help.

If you are staying in a villa out of town it can be difficult to get transport when most needed. When you first arrive, get a few phone numbers of reliable taxi services that operate 24 hours and store them in your phone.

2 -7 août : Karimunjawa - l’île confidentielle

Quelques lectures de blog nous avaient soufflé à l’oreille le nom de ce petit paradis encore confidentiel au cœur de la mer au nord de Java. Mais, le considérant trop difficile à atteindre, nous l’avions éliminé de notre programme. Il est sept heures, Yogyakarta est encore en sommeil mais comme souvent, le matin m’a cueillie un peu trop tôt. Il y a cependant quelque chose de magique et d’inestimable dans ces moments en solitaire, lorsque le jour se lève doucement et que je peux laisser rouler mes pensées et les quelques mots qui sortent du rien et que j’inscris religieusement dans mon carnet en Moleskine. Un bavard intempestif vient perturber ma rêverie, et je ponctue les phrases venues de la cuisine en maugréant des renseignements basiques : yes, des Français, encore! Paris, la tour Eiffel, les Philippines ont ouvert le bal, et le volcan du Bromo, à l’est de Java, qui ensuite nous attend. Mais le gérant de l’auberge, qui me prépare une délicieuse crêpe à la banane, n’en démord pas : Karimunjawa est un petit joyau, et nous serions bien mal avisés de nous en passer. Cette fois-ci, c’est décidé  : rendez-vous pris le lendemain soir pour un ticket au paradis. Rallier Karimunjawa à un petit goût d’aventure sauvage et un peu sulfureuse ; avant de servir, au commencement du XIXe siècle, de colonie pénitentiaire, l’île était un repaire de pirates. Toute aventure comporte son lot de risques, et ce soir, semble-t-il, nous avons gagné le jackpot. A minuit, heure du démon, notre conducteur arrive pour nous emmener, en compagnie de deux italiennes, au port de Jepara, à cinq heures au nord. C’est un homme sans âge, qui a les paupières lourdes et le visage malmené de ceux qui ne se reposent jamais vraiment. Nous voilà entraînés, Olivier à la place du mort et moi coincée à l’arrière entre les sacs, avec les genoux qui tutoient la banquette médiane, dans un rallye infernal. Si les routes en Indonésie comportent deux tronçons, il faut en réalité en compter quatre, car les bas-cotés servent aussi de voie rapide. Il est impressionnant de voir tout le monde se doubler au petit bonheur la chance et au mépris des voitures en face. Ceci étant, les conducteurs indonésiens s’avèrent plutôt civilisés : ils ralentissent, se déportent un peu, mordent les plates bandes et tout s’emboîte miraculeusement. Mais ce soir, notre voiture file à une allure folle et dépasse à tout va sous les appels de phares de ceux qui se rangent in extremis. J’ai conscience que l’on joue un peu trop nos vies alors je ferme les yeux, et je me raconte des histoires pour passer le temps.

Il est trois heures du matin, et le taxi nous lâche miraculeusement vivants sur le port. Impossible d’acheter les billets de ferry autrement que sur place, et il n’y a qu’un seul bateau par jour. Pas d’autre choix que celui de faire la queue - assez fournie malgré l’heure - et les petits malins ont même campé au pied des guichets.

Il est sept heures, nous ne savons plus trop où nous habitons mais nous avons les précieux sésames, et c’est l’heure d’embarquer. Bénis soient ceux qui ne souffrent pas du mal de mer, et qui n’auront jamais le teint cireux, les sueurs froides et le corps qui se vide par tous les bouts. En ce qui me concerne, et les traversées en gros bateau sont toujours de vilains moments à passer. Le vieux rafiot tangue sur les vagues par creux de plusieurs mètres, et nous sommes nombreux à sembler en piteux état. Au mépris de la graisse de moteur et de la crasse qui me recouvre peu à peu les vêtements et le corps, je m’arrime au sol de tous mon poids et ainsi les heures passent, les yeux fermés ou rivés au ciel pour conjurer le mal de cœur. Midi est bien entamé et nous approchons enfin de la terre promise. Que la mer en est belle ! Nous élisons domicile dans les hauteurs de l’île, car le centre jalonné de mosquées et de restaurants n’est pas le havre de paix que nous appelons de nos vœux. Ce sont six jours  paresseux qui s’écoulent le long de plages magnifiques et d’une mer aux larges stries turquoise et émeraude. Une pause dont les bienfaits vont être, nous ne le savons pas encore, un peu chahutés par le trajet chaotique pour rallier, du port de Java, le volcan Bromo. En ce soir du 7 juillet, j’écris d’une voiture déglinguée qui nous emmène, avec un couple d’espagnols, vers l’est de Java. Nous roulons depuis l’arrivée de notre bateau ce midi, il est presque onze heures du soir et nous sommes encore loin de notre destination finale. La faute à l’agence, qui a refusé de nous faire prendre l’autoroute malgré ce que nous estimons être une petite fortune (35 euros par tête de pipe), à la circulation toujours aussi chaotique malgré l’heure tardive, à un défilé de chars lumineux dans une ville qui nous a bloqué deux heures, et à pas de chance. Demain, nous avons prévu trois heures de scooter et six heures de randonnée. Nous nous accommodons, bon gré malgré, de ce genre de trajets qui nous font perdre des journées entières, et ne se déroulent jamais comme prévu. Pour rallier les lacs de soufre d’Igen, notre prochaine destination, nous nous promettons de prendre le train!

Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar is making moves in a surging industry. He directed the first season of HBO Asia’s Jakarta-set supernatural series Halfworlds and some episodes of its new horror series Folklore. He joins other local auteurs enjoying both domestic and international acclaim for movies like last year’s Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts, directed by Mouly Surya. The so-called “satay Western” about a wronged woman out for revenge won raves at 2017’s Cannes Film Festival, and is the nation’s pick to compete for Best Foreign Language Film at next year’s Academy Awards.

Filmmaking in Indonesia dates back more than a century, and movies were first shown there in 1900. The current resurgence comes after last century’s bumpy journey for an art form that never totally took hold of audiences’ imagination.

“We hear about a once-rich Indonesian cinema culture, but it was an illusion,” Anwar told Southeast Asia Globe.

He’s referring to the sagas of Sundanese legends that were popular with Indonesian audiences in the 1920s, but were told from the point of view of the Dutch directors who made them on location in what was then the Dutch East Indies. In the early 1930s, elaborate romantic melodramas were all the rage, but they were created by Chinese entrepreneurs who were flush from the Shanghai movie boom and extending their market around the region. Heavily financed foreign productions discouraged local film production, which was scattershot and based mainly in Jakarta. The Great Depression and Dutch taxes made this dream all but impossible by the mid-1930s.

A handful of enterprising filmmakers dipped their toes in the water in the 1940s – just before film production was banned under the Japanese occupation. Government-approved political films saturated the post-Independence era until a string of indie domestic films enjoyed huge success in the 1980s. The 1988 political biopic Tjoet Nja’ Dhien was the first Indonesian film to be invited to Cannes. Soon after that victory, local filmmaking took a big hit when the government lifted a ban on the screening of foreign films. Indonesian moviemakers couldn’t compete with blockbusters from Hollywood and Hong Kong. During Southeast Asia’s economic crisis of 1997, Indonesia’s economy tanked, along with box office sales and investment in domestic film production. Just six movies were made in Indonesia in 1999.

The industry has been recovering since the mid-2000s, and in most Indonesian cities, air-conditioned multiplexes are seeing relatively healthy sales. John Riady, an Indonesian entrepreneur and editor at large of the Jakarta Globe, describes Indonesia as “the most invisible country in the world”, referring to the rarity of good English writing about the country and poor tourism marketing. It’s home to a quarter of a billion people, and its capital, Jakarta, is a gargantuan tech-obsessed metropolis that sends more tweets daily than any other city on the planet. Metrics like that are impressive, but local cinema isn’t quite keeping pace.

“Indonesians used to have a closer emotional relationship with movies and cinemas, mainly because there weren’t many alternatives to movie-watching at that time, and cinemas were not in high-end shopping malls,” explained Anwar. “Today, going to a cinema requires more effort since most of them are inside places which the average Indonesian person – someone who lives outside of Jakarta, for example, or the average Jakartan who doesn’t visit luxury malls – has no access to.”

Anwar, 42, is a solidly built man who dresses and talks with the confidence of someone who tours the international film-festival circuit and enjoys a lucrative career. He grew up in a poor part of Sumatra and spent much of his childhood watching horror and kung-fu movies. In 2003, he wrote Indonesia’s first gay-themed film, Arisan!, and went on to write and direct a slew of films throughout the 2000s. His 2007 film, Kala, was lauded at the New York Asian Film Festival. His 2009 thriller, Forbidden Door, was screened at film festivals all over the world, and the Hollywood Reporter compared it to the work of Alfred Hitchcock.

The biggest challenge faced by Indonesian cinema is getting audiences in seats, Anwar explained.

“There are too few cinemas, compared to the increasing interest in cinema-going. For the past three years, Indonesia has enjoyed a [rise in] ticket sales for locally produced films, and it seems like we are going to surpass that also this year. However, ticket prices have crept up to keep pace with demand, and this puts a visit to the cinema out of the reach of most Indonesians, who either don’t have or can’t justify spending that kind of money on a movie ticket. There’s also the fact that the older traditions of movie-going are gone, and so unless you’re an upwardly mobile Jakartan, cinema isn’t on your radar at all. You watch TV. You talk to your family.”

Anwar then produced something unexpected: the 2015 dystopian A Copy of My Mind, set in Jakarta during the tense 2014 presidential elections. The urban drama and love story about a low-rent salon worker and a guy who writes subtitles for pirated DVDs featured Jakarta as a character more than a setting.

“My vision of Jakarta in A Copy of My Mind was meant to be a love letter to the city I moved to 20 years ago,” said Anwar. “Back then, I was penniless but I fell in love with the city right away. It was a very diverse place and people were more tolerant. Preachers weren’t spreading hate in mosques. Nightlife was colourful. We even had a gay film festival – imagine that, in the world’s most Muslim-populated country!”

Unlike the Hong Kong of Wong Kar-wai or the Madrid of Almodóvar, Anwar’s Jakarta wasn’t venerated, there was no background razzle-dazzle. In A Copy of My Mind, Jakarta is a bleak and ominous place, akin to the Phnom Penh of the Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh.

“Now, it feels like I don’t know Jakarta anymore. I believe that the 2014 presidential campaign started a kind of hateful atmosphere in the city, and in the country,” he said. “There were so many black campaigns launched, and they seriously damaged our capability for logic and cultural expression. Now hate has been normalised: you hear it from religious preachers, on the street, even in schools by teachers. With A Copy of My Mind, I guess I wanted to make a time capsule of that one particular year so 20 years from now, when things get better or worse, we can watch that film and remember what happened, and reflect.”

There are no film schools in Indonesia, but it does have five filmmaking education programmes at universities and institutes. It has just over 1,000 cinema screens, compared to nearly 15,000 in the comparable economy of India, which has a robust national cinema culture. In the Philippines, the industry employs a quarter of a million people and 50 million Filipinos go to the movies every year.

So why does Indonesia lag behind?

“First of all, good and entertaining movies in Indonesia are so rare that momentum in viewership can’t be sustained,” said Anwar. “This makes it hard to argue for financing, it makes it hard to motivate people to join the industry or take up training, and human resources in Indonesian filmmaking are already so rare. This results in a lot of untrained people making well-intentioned but poor-quality films. But most films are likely to get a theatrical release to fill cinema schedules, thus glutting the market with low-grade product – and this turns audiences off even further.”

Anwar hopes the current successes signal a turning point. He spoke of the increase in new movie theatres and educational opportunities, including the workshops and training offered through the government’s Creative Economy Agency.

When Southeast Asia Globe caught up with him, Anwar was in post-production after a long shoot on location in Jakarta and West Java for his next film, Gundala, based on 1980s Indonesian superhero comic books. Promo shots and poster art for it are plastered on Indonesian Facebook pages and in that deluge of Jakartan tweets.

After his work with HBO Asia, it seemed possible that Anwar would follow the money and work internationally, but Gundala suggests the exact opposite.

“I believe what’s important is making films that you can inject your own personality into, your views of life,” he said. “I think I will be happy making movies anywhere, as long as I am doing movies which I care about, with stories that I believe in, and with interesting characters. It still has to be a personal experience for me. As long as I’m allowed to do that, making movies anywhere will still be bliss.”

First-ever interactive virtual LTS held

For the first time amidst the COVID19 pandemic, an interactive virtual Leadership Training Seminar for recognized student organizations was conducted by the Student Development and Programs Office with CPU alumni, J Vincent Gasataya and Albert Jan Matthew Java as facilitators last February 19, 2022.

Gasataya and Java, the LTS facilitators are true-blooded Centralians, CPU Loyalty awardees, and were active leaders during their student days.

Gasataya, a Cum laude BS ECE graduate, was a regional finalist of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) and was once the chairman of the TOSP- Victors while Java, a Cum laude BS Accty graduate, Alma Mater awardee and former CPU Republic president, was a national finalist in the TOSP, No. 2 awardee and leader in the Outstanding Students of Iloilo (TOSIA).

A representative of CPU Teatro, Sining, Atbp., Regimika Malunda said that the LTS was more than what she expected, for it was fun and informative reminding her about what a Centralian leader should be and allowing her to share her thoughts and take-aways with other student leaders.

“It was not the kind of leadership training I was expecting or should I say it was more than what I’ve expected. It was fun, informative, and it lets us engage with other leaders as well as with the facilitators. It gave us the opportunity to share our thoughts and take-aways. It guided me on how to handle the responsibility of being a leader to my org and it reminded me of what a Centralian leader should be,” Malunda said.

According to Danica Rose Zepansa of the CPU Association of Chemistry Students, the LTS taught her patience, the need to be always imaginative and objective, and to consider everything as a challenge to overcome.

Zepansa said, “I have learned patience in the activities. No matter how long, you must persevere to get the correct answer. Always be imaginative and objective to everything and treat everything not as a game but a challenge to overcome.”

In addition, Zepansa said that though it was difficult to converse online, we should not be afraid to speak up and make mistakes for the latter make us see what we should do.

“It was difficult to converse virtually but don’t be afraid to speak up, seek help and make mistakes. Mistakes let us realize what we should do, and time may come when we’ll get tired, but always keep in mind that it is just part of the process,” Zepansa said.

Edalrehce Abogadil Forro, a member of the CPU Realm of Aureum Phoenixes, shared that she enjoyed the LTS very much and was not bored even though it was done virtually because the facilitator Mr. Java was really good and super alive when he hosted.

“Super nag enjoy gid ko. I thought boring sya , kase virtual lang, pero sir Java is really good. Super alive mag host hahaha,” Forro said

Forro further said that she learned much from the training especially about the real meaning of teamwork and leadership, about herself through the Johari window activity and about the need to look at the bigger things so that more opportunities and ideas can be created.

“I learned a lot. Mas na understand ko lalo yung real meaning ng teamwork and leadership. And marami den akong realizations about myself, especially yung Johari window, super nakahelp sya para mas ma analyze yung self ko. And na learn ko rin na, hindi dapat mag focus sa maliit lang, it is better kung titingnan natin yung bigger things para mas maraming opportunities and ideas na mabuo,” Forro added.

Together with other participants, Forro was thankful for the opportunity to join the interactive leadership seminar.

“Thank you for this opportunity na makajoin sa ganitong seminar. I learned a lot,” Forro said.

The LTS is an annual activity conducted by the Student Development and Programs Office headed by its director, Dr. Margen Java, and it aims to enhance the leadership skills of CPU students.

This year’s event was attended by 57 representatives of various CPU student organizations – academic (33), special (10), religious (7), cultural (1), sports (1) fraternities (4), and CPUR (1), according to Ms. Artchel Madera, SDP secretary who served in the LTS Secretariat together with Ms. Ciarra Guilamo and Ms. Mary Joy Alonsagay.

CPU Alumnus named as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines.

Mr. John Elmer P. Loretizo is one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP).

Mr. John Elmer P. Loretizo, a Magna Cum Laude graduate from Central Philippine University Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering batch 2018, was hailed as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) during its recently concluded online awarding ceremony on December 1, 2021.

Mr. Loretizo’s journey in the 57th Search for TOSP has begun in 2018 with a regional search where schools send representatives until he joined the list of the national awardees. “The journey was great; I thought for a second that we won’t get awarded but then TOSP foundation was still in communication with us and was doing everything they can to put it into works,” he said while sharing his experience since the awarding ceremony took almost three years because of unforeseen events such as the pandemic.

Alongside this award, it should be noted that Mr. Loretizo has made CPU proud in his many achievements. These include winning the Grand Prize for the National Geographic’s “Everyday Genius” contest in 2017; having been chosen as one of the recipients of GMA Network Excellence Award in 2018; having been selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines in 2018; among of others.

He encouraged the Centralians by saying, “I owe a big part of who I am today from the experience and training I received in CPU; and I can say that I am eternally grateful to CPU. The Central Spirit truly lives on wherever you are in the world – even here in the US and I’m just happy to be a part of such an amazing community. I know that CPU has no shortage of amazing student leaders that are capable of achieving the same feat that I have achieved. And I would dare to say that there will be some who will even achieve more things than what I have achieved now and I’m excited to see it unfold. Lastly, I can say that yes, today I’m one of the TOSP but tomorrow I still wake up as a human being with flaws and imperfections but with the right community beside you – you can always strive to be better for yourself and for others.”

He also acknowledged and expressed his gratitude to the following people, “First and foremost, to God who has guided me all these years in every endeavor I take and for closing doors and opening windows of opportunities for me. I stand where I am today because God has led me to this path. My mom and my family of course for their never-ending support in all aspects. CPU administration headed by Dr. Teodoro Robles; office of student development and programs headed by Dr. Margen Java; College of Engineering faculty and staff headed by Engr. Dany C. Molina; all my coaches while I was in the university; and all of the amazing student leaders, friends, and classmates I’ve shared my CPU journey with – all the good, the bad, and the ugly; all of these things have shaped me to who I am today.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Jan Christian E. Española, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, Cum Laude, was also chosen as one of the TOSP finalists. Mr. Española has showcased his leadership skill in CPU by serving as CPUR President from 2017 to 2018.

He expressed that having been included in the finalists already made him “happy and proud not just for myself but especially for the people/organizations I consider my life agents — Family, Sir Maredil Ambos, Pastor Alfred Morales, Blessed Bea Plondaya, CPU administration, Koalisyon, CPU Republic, CPU Printing Press and the TOSP.”

Currently, Mr. Loretizo works as Data Scientist for Cell Quality and Field Reliability, Tesla. He finished his Master of Science in Business Analytics degree from the University of California, Davis last 2020. On the other hand, Mr. Española pursues his Masters in Public Administration.

Indonesian Air Force T-50i jet accident

An Indonesian Air Force KAI T-50i Golden Eagle military jet crashed on a night training mission on the main island of Java, killing the pilot.

The South Korean-made T-50i Golden Eagle was conducting tactical interception training when it fell into bushes on July 18 in Blora District of Central Java province, about an hour after taking off from Iswahyudi Air Base in the neighboring province of East Java, military spokesman, Marshal Indan Gilang said.

The last contact between the jet (tail number TT-5009) and the air base was at 7:25 p.m. Residents found parts of the jet severely damaged in the bushes, and the pilot's body was recovered from the crash site, Gilang said.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

KAI supplied up to 16 T-50i aircraft to the Indonesian Air Force in 2014, through a $400 million sales contract signed in 2011. In November 2018, sales of radar systems and machine guns continued to support the operation of the aircraft. One of them crashed while performing at the Yogyakarta Airshow in 2015, killing the two pilots on board.

Last year, the Indonesian Ministry of Defense ordered six more T-50i Golden Eagle coaches from South Korea.

In addition to Indonesia, several Asian countries also use, or at least ordered, the T-50 Golden Eagle aircraft manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI). It's Thailand and the Philippines. In Indonesia the aircraft is called T-50i, while in Thailand it is T-50TH and FA-50PH in the Philippines.
