Jety-Orguz

After a night in a local guesthouse where the power was out all night, so no one could charge their devices and no internet, we headed up to Jety-Orguz high in the mountains. The road up was, of course, rough but the trip was much shorter this time.

The yurt camp was situated in a beautiful green meadow surrounded by tree covered hills. The green of the trees and meadow was a welcome change from the dry countryside.

In the morning we walked to a waterfall a little over a mile away through the forest. There was a 800 ft climb, and considering that the camp was at 8,500 ft this flatlander did some huffing and puffing. But that’s good. More hiking and at a bit of elevation is just what I need more of!

On the way back down we stopped at a rock formation of red sandstone, which has a legend about two men fighting over a woman, both dying, she dies, etc. The normal sort of legend.

Then we stopped at the Ak Orgo Workshop that specializes in making felt rugs and yurts. Meken bek who runs the place has built machines to help with the time consuming work of making felt and has improved the design of some of the yurt elements. The result is very thick firm felts that make beautiful rugs.

We “assisted” with the erection of a yurt, so we could better understand them. (I’m sure our assistance slowed the process considerably.)

Then we were off to Karakol, a larger town, where we stopped at the wooden Russian Orthodox Cathedral. While it is well preserved despite being used as a student gymnasium in Soviet times.

Then to a unique Dungan mosque. The Dungan people migrated from China to Kyrgyzstan and have kept many of their traditions.

After the mosque we stopped for lunch at a Dungan family for a Dungan feast.

We also stopped at the local Orthodox cathedral. It dates from the late 1800's and is made of wood. Of course during the Soviet era it was repurposed as a gymnasium. It was originally built without nails, but it's clear that repairs over the years have used nails. What it needs now is a coat of paint.

There was supposed to be free time in the afternoon, but as usual we were running late and we just had time to check into the hotel and take a shower before dinner.

To save time we went to a cafe for dinner, and to order box lunches for the next day. But our guide decided she would take all of the orders for both dinner and the box lunches, then go to the cashier and order all of them, then come back for modifications when things were not available. It took forever. Then after dinner we all had to go to the cash register where the individual orders were entered and we individually paid. It was not a time saver. But we had a lot of time to sit around and talk.
