You never intended for the summer between your sophomore and junior years of college to be packed with hard work and stress. In fact, you thought that having a part-time job in a beach town would be quite the opposite. That it would be full of seasonal flings, sunburns, and plenty of time relaxing on the beach enjoying your sappy romance novels. Instead, your absolute bitch of a boss, Cindy, had you working 35 hours a week wiping tables and taking orders, sometimes even being a substitute bartender if it was a busy night. Luckily for you, your best friend Karina also decided to take the plunge into the world of summer waitressing with you, and the two of you had almost every shift together. But still, you would much rather be stretched out underneath the sun right now than punching your 100th order of the morning into the restaurant’s computer system. You sigh aloud at the thought of the salt water lapping at the shore, seagulls flapping around while the local surf rock station plays quietly on the radio in the sand next to you.
“Y/N!!” an obnoxious voice shouts, shaking you out of your seashore reverie. Your eyes refocus just in time to see Cindy storming towards you in anger, her eyes scrunched with a fury that only ever comes out when you’ve messed up. “You’ve been standing there for 2 minutes doing nothing,” she hisses through her teeth. “Pull yourself together. You only have a half hour left on your shift, and then you’re free to be as useless as you want.”
“Sorry,” you mumble under your breath, holding back a sarcastic retort to the last part of Cindy’s criticism. You punch the order into the system and sweep yourself back into the dining room to do rounds and check on the tables that you’ve already served food to.
---
True to her word, Cindy released you from hell 30 minutes later. As quickly as possible, you strip off your apron and change into one of your favorite blue bikinis in the employee bathroom, wanting to hit the beach as soon as possible. You find Karina waiting outside the restaurant in her white Jeep Wrangler, roof and doors removed for the warm summer weather. On the rare days when the two of you don’t share a shift, this is always your routine. Karina picks you up at the end of your 2 o’clock shift and drives the two of you to the beach where you spend the next four hours basking in the sun and body-boarding in the water.
Today is no different, and the two of you soon find yourselves spreading out your towels and slathering yourselves in sunscreen, preparing for an afternoon of the reason you truly came to the small beach town this summer: relaxing. After an hour or so of sunbathing and reading some rather spicy parts of your latest romance novel, you and Karina decide it’s time for a dip in the ocean. “Hey, Y/N, go check what the water temperature is so we can mentally prepare ourselves before turning into popsicles in the ocean,” Karina giggles, gesturing towards the nearest lifeguard stand. You nod in agreement and make your way over to the back of the tall white chair where information such as water temperature and high tide is usually posted. As you near the stand however, you notice that instead of temperatures and warnings, someone had written the words ‘Ask me!’ over the chalkboard.
You glance up at the lifeguard to try and catch their eye, but an umbrella has been propped sideways to block a northward wind, preventing you from being able to see the person sitting there. “Excuse me!” you shout, hand shielding your eyes from the sun as you make your way around to the front of the stand. “Is everything okay?” a gentle voice responds. The lifeguard, a rather lanky, handsome man with black hair brushing the top of his ears, leans over. “Everything’s fine,” you respond with a timid smile. “I was just wondering what the water temperature is?”
The man’s form visibly relaxes as he realizes that there was no emergency and you just wanted some information. “Oh! Yeah, the temperature is 67°,” the lifeguard responds.
“Okay, thank you!” you shout, turning away to walk back to where Karina was waiting.
“Wait! Are you planning on boarding at all?” he asks, forcing you to turn around. He glances over at Karina and the boogie boards lying on the sand next to her while she watches us.
“Um, yeah. Is that okay?” you respond, placing your hands on your hips.
“Of course, of course! You should just know that there’s some serious undertow and a pretty strong rip current in this area today. If you get pulled out just swim parallel to the beach to get back in or signal if you need help,” he smiles helpfully.
“Oh. Thanks, but I think I’ll be okay,” you nod. “I’ve been coming to this beach and boarding since I was a little kid.”
The lifeguard just shrugs and sits down, but you can feel his eyes on you and Karina as the two of you grab your boards and dive into the frigid waves. Unfortunately for you, the lifeguard was quite right about the strong currents, and you spent half of your time in the water struggling to not be dragged down the entire length of the beach. After about a half hour of unsuccessfully attempting to catch some waves, Karina sighs and starts to swim in. “Maybe tomorrow will be better conditions. Neither of us are working so we can be out here all day if you want,” she exclaims, always the optimist. “Ok,” you reply. “I’m going to stay out here a little longer and then head in. Do you mind taking my board?”
You un-velcro the strap from your wrist and push the board towards Karina for her to drag it onto the sand. As soon as you let go of the board, you begin to realize just how much you were relying on it to keep you afloat in the strong current, especially considering you aren’t in an area where you can touch the bottom. After just a couple of minutes of treading water, you decide to follow Karina’s idea and begin to swim towards the shore. Karina sees you making her way towards her, but she waves her hands and shouts, pointing to the ocean behind you. A quick glance tells you that there’s a massive wave just seconds away from crashing on your head. “Shit,”  you curse, turning around and bracing yourself to be pommeled. Had you been farther out, you might have been given the chance to dive under the wave as it crested, but you were in the exact area that, when the wave finally arrived, the only thing you could do was take a deep breath and hope for the best.
As the wave crashes around you and catches you in it’s white waters, you tuck your knees into your chest, feeling yourself bounce around, your shins catching the sharp shells and rocks being thrown around you. After what feels like forever, you finally resurface, gasping for breath and a little red-faced from the embarrassment of wiping out, but still alive. And yet, something felt weird. As you catalogue your surroundings, you notice that you are farther from the shore than you were when you went under. Much farther. You try to plant your feet on the sand beneath you, but instead begin to sink below the surface. Having been tired out from fighting the waves for the past hour, you begin to panic, forgetting everything that the lifeguard had just told you about swimming out of rip currents.
In your own panicking and splashing around, you fail to notice someone swimming towards you. Someone wearing red swimming trunks with a bright orange buoy tied around their waist. When the lifeguard finally reaches you, he grabs your wrist to place your hand on the float, causing you to scream out in surprise, still not realizing that someone was there to save you.
“Shhh, shhhh calm down it’s okay,” the lifeguard says, reaching for your hand again. “I’m here to help, you’re gonna be okay.”
You try your hardest to hold in your tears as you grip onto the lifeguard’s buoy, but you feel like you can barely breath from the panic that you just experienced. You squeeze the orange plastic so tightly that your knuckles turn white, something that the lifeguard is quick to notice. “You’re going to be okay,” he once again reassures you. “What’s your name?” he asks in a soothing voice.
After a few deep gasps, you’re able to get out, “Y/N.”
The man smiles. “Hi, Y/N. I’m Johnny. I’m going to get you back to solid ground, okay? But I’m going to need you to stay calm for me, okay? Or else it’s going to be a lot harder for me.”
Unable to respond, you just rapidly shake your head, eager to have your feet touching the earth again. Johnny places one of his hands on the other side of the buoy, and uses his right arm to begin towing you back towards the shore. In no time, the water grows lighter as you and Johnny cut through the water, eventually reaching an area where you can once again stand. “Are you okay?” he asks, turning towards you with a worried sound to his voice. You once again nod, embarrassed to meet his eyes and not trusting your voice to be stable if you spoke.
Johnny gives you a once over, his eyes lingering on your knee. You follow his gaze and notice that during the wave, a shell must have gashed your leg open, and a steady flow of blood is now streaming through the cut on your knee. “Why don’t you come up to my stand and let me check that out?” Johnny asks, although it comes out as more of a command. “O-Okay,” you whisper. He places a steadying hand on your back and guides you up the sand to where Karina is waiting for you. “Oh. My. God,” Karina shrieks, seeing the injury on your leg. “She’ll be fine,” Johnny comments to her. “I just want to clean and bandage the cut to make sure that it doesn’t get infected.”
He guides you to sit down on a foldable chair at the base of the lifeguard stand while he climbs up to get a medical kit. “This might sting a bit,” Johnny apologizes in advance, opening the bag to pull out an alcohol wipe. “It’s okay, I can handle it,” you grimace.
“Just like you said you can handle the ocean?” Johnny asks, looking up with a small grin. “Sorry, too soon.”
“For your information,” you begin. “I would ordinarily be able to deal with that wave, no problem. I just wasn’t ready.”
“Mm-hm. I’m sure,” Johnny nods sarcastically.
“Hey,” you frown. “You don’t know me well enough to be making fun of me- HOLY SHIT THAT HURTS!”
You glance down to see Johnny dabbing at the wound on your leg with the cleansing cloth. “Sorry,” he grimaces. “I did try to warn you.”
Johnny goes to wipe at the cut again, another wave of pain rolling over you. You involuntarily reach out to squeeze the closest thing, which happens to be Johnny’s bare back as he’s bent over your knee. “Jesus, woman,” Johnny swears, pulling away as your nails dig into his skin in pain. Your hands shoot up to cover your mouth. “I’m so sorry!” you squeak. He sucks air in quickly through his teeth as he glances over his shoulder to look at the scratches you left on him. “I normally have to buy someone a few drinks before I get them to mark me like that,” he chuckles, turning his attention back to your leg, which he begins to cover with a bandage.
Your cheeks color a bright red at the suggestive comment, although luckily Johnny doesn’t glance up at that moment to see your embarrassment.
“There. All done,” Johnny says, gently patting your knee and standing up. “The next time I tell you to watch out for the rip, listen to me,” he orders, raising an eyebrow at me. “Yessir,” you say seriously, giving him a sarcastic little salute. Johnny’s grins. “I’ll see you around, Y/N.”
“See you around, Johnny,” you respond, slowly limping your way back to Karina.

JEEP CHEROKEE 2020: 10 THINGS TO KNOW
Tumblr media
Slightly redesigned in 2019, the Cherokee remains a popular Jeep. If we notice especially the Wrangler on our roads, without roof, without doors and sometimes even without shoes in the driver’s feet, the Cherokee is fighting hard not to fall off the podium. Add to that a pedigree that isn’t worm-eaten and you have a recipe for success that even 10 things to know don’t fully explain. But you can always try…
1 Once upon a time
When the United States entered World War II, it decreed that it would need a compact all-terrain vehicle. Two companies raise their hands: American Bantam and Willys-Overland.
The army considered the BRC (Bantam Reconnaissance Car) prototype interesting but it did not have enough torque and the military doubted that the company would be able to provide the required quantity. They then passed on the Bantam design to Willys and Ford, asking them to do better. Their prototypes: the Ford GP and the Willys MA. When a Willys engineer finally slipped a powerful “Go Devil” under the hood, the Willys Model MB won the day.
In production, the army put Willys and Ford to work, while Bantam, after a few units, moved on. The result was the Model MB and the Ford GPW (for Government, P stands for the 80″ wheelbase, and W is a salute to Willys’ design).
2 We are still looking for
Where does the word Jeep come from? As the manufacturer himself avoids clarifying the question, no doubt to thicken the mystery, the suppositions rain down. For some, the name refers to Eugene the Jeep, a comic book animal linked to Popeye and Olive Oyl. He was magical, able to “move anywhere and do anything”, just the pretensions of a Jeep. In short, teleportation before its time!
For others, the name derives from the Ford GPW, although the meaning “General Purpose” of GP is disputed.
A third theory: Jeep would be the acronym for “Just Enough Essential Parts”, the vehicle being the assembly of “just enough essential parts”. Make your choice!
3 What kind ?
By the way, should we say a Jeep or a Jeep? On its website www.jeep.ca, Chrysler describes the Jeep Cherokee, no doubt because it goes straight ahead, goes through everything, is not afraid of anything; in short, it’s manly! Just as we don’t say the RAM, which is a van… Moreover, as the word “jeep” has become generic over time, like “fridge” and “kodak”, we often write the jeep in reference to any all-purpose vehicle. And without capital letters as long as the brand is not mentioned. Come to think of it, in parallel with the current news that puts the spotlight on non-gender individuals, the Jeep is perhaps the unisex vehicle of choice…
4 To me! No, to me!
As early as 1943, Willys applied for copyright of the Jeep name but the courts ruled that the original design belonged to Bantam. Never mind, Willys marketed the CJ-2A in 1945, the first “Civilian Jeep” intended for the general public. And then, since Willys was the only post-war company interested in assembling jeeps, it was finally granted the trademark in 1950.
5 The waltz of the owners
The CJ gives the starting signal for an avalanche of by-products: the Jeep Station Wagon (1946), the Jeep Truck (1947), the ancestor of the Gladiator, the Jeepster (1948). In 1953, Kaiser Motors bought Willys, which became Kaiser-Jeep in 1963. American Motors Corporation (AMC) acquired Kaiser’s Jeep division in 1970. Renault begins to invest in AMC in 1979 before Chrysler Corporation buys AMC in 1987, essentially to get its hands on Jeep (Chrysler will drop all other AMC activities).
6 Follow the guide!
At www.jeep.ca to shop for your Cherokee 2020, you will find nine models. Actually, there are six and three packages (North Altitude, Trailhawk Elite and High Altitude). The six versions are Sport, North, Trailhawk, Limited and Overland. Uh, Mr. Columnist, that makes five… The North splits up, as it can be had in 4×4 and 4×2, the only model in the family to be satisfied with front-wheel drive if that’s what you want.
All other versions come standard with all-wheel drive, but it’s not even that simple yet. There are, in fact, three kinds of 4x4s for the Cherokee…
For Sport 4×4, there’s no choice, it inherits the Active Drive I system. The North, Limited and Overland variants come standard with Active Drive I but can be upgraded to the optional Active Drive II. Finally, the Trailhawk comes with Active Drive Lock, a system exclusive to the Trailhawk.
7 Him or him?
Let me guess your next question: what are the differences between these three 4x4s? The Active Drive I is not a constant drive, like Subaru for example. Rather, it allows the rear axle to be uncoupled if electronic sensors judge that road conditions do not require all-wheel drive. You then drive in 4×2 mode to save fuel. The system reverts back to 4×4 whenever necessary, without driver intervention.
Active Drive II adds low speed all-wheel drive, which locks the driveshafts on demand to ensure you’re all-wheel drive. It’s great for getting out of a rut or for towing. Plus, Cherokee’s ground clearance with Active Drive II increases by 1″ (2.5 cm).
Finally, the Active Drive Lock system uses the capabilities of the Drive II and allows the rear differential to lock, which sends equal torque to each of its wheels. For serious off-road enthusiasts.
8 Trio of mills
In addition to the two well-known engines, the 271-hp 3.2L V6, a washed-down version of the 3.6L Pentastar, and the 184-hp 2.4L Tigershark 4-cylinder, FCA recently added a 2.0L, 270-hp, turbocharged 4-cylinder that’s more expensive than the V6 and similar to the one that rumbles under the bonnets of the Wrangler and Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio.
This trio of machines is backed by a 9-speed automatic transmission in place since 2014, which was groundbreaking, but has since come in for criticism because of its frequent hesitations.
Finally, although the base 2.4L can only tow 2000 lbs, the V6 manages with 4500 lbs (2041 kg), 500 lbs more than the turbo.
9 A forerunner
The Cherokee’s career began in 1974 as a 2-door version of the Jeep Wagoneer (1962 to 1991), while ousting the disappointing Jeepster Commando. The 4-door version of the Cherokee was born in 1977. To appeal to a younger customer base than the venerable Wagoneer, marketing gurus coined an expression to define the newcomer: Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). These three words have never left our automotive lexicon!
10 A long C.V.
To underline its 2nd generation (1984), the Cherokee abandons ladder construction in favour of a monocoque body, another first. The public loved this idea, which gave the comfort of a car to a “truck”. Rivals take notes.
The Cherokee’s popularity is such that when the time comes for the 3rd generation (2002 vintage), Chrysler launches the Grand Cherokee while its famous little brother becomes the Liberty in North America (but keeps the Cherokee name elsewhere in the world). Then begins its period of compact SUVs, until the Compass/Patriot duo makes it into the even smaller one in 2007.
A year later, the fourth generation was greeted, still under the Liberty name, while Dodge entered the fray with a twin brother named Nitro.
With the 5th generation (2014) begins the crossover period: the Liberty name is retired, the Cherokee name is revived and the vehicle is slightly enlarged to justify the arrival of the Jeep Renegade.
11 Signature visuelle (boni !)
The famous seven-bar vertical grille that makes a Jeep’s front grille as recognizable as a Rolls-Royce’s was originally new, based on Ford’s original design for its GPW. To better cook a hamburger says the legend…

Adventures Are Us
Tumblr media
Anxious to be off, we left home in the dark a full hour ahead of our loosely held departure time and headed for the heart of the Rockies in Colorado. This trip we turned north at a small town in Texas east of Amarillo. (We’ve already been to the Cadillac Ranch). The scenery was nice, a pleasant break from the freeway monotony. For my money, I’d give the entire Texas panhandle to Oklahoma. And while we’re at it, give the northeast notch to Arkansas. And while we’re still at it, Arkansas may as well take the boot-heel back from Missouri. There. We can deal with straightening the rest of the country later.
We blinked at Walsenburg, CO and missed our exit – and very glad that we did. After spending the night in Colorado City, we drove a back road across the Wet Mountains. We’d only once before seen so many deer! The previous occasion was on a dirt road in the Ozarks. But these were mule deer – in excellent health, I might add. I wish we’d had a camera ready for the three bucks we spooked in the road around a curve. Any of the three would have been a trophy, their antlers rich in velvet.
Around another curve we were surprised by a rock castle, a work in decades of progress by a single old man, a Mr. Bishop. We didn’t meet him, but did an old timer that arrived for a re-visit. Bishop did all the designing, welding and rock work himself. Every tower had stairways within. The place was amazing! I don’t know how eccentric the man is, but I liked his signs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As always, the first sightings of mountains were picture-inspiring, if not totally picturesque. But as it turned out, we were glad of the photos that we took in light of the fact that two fires had ignited near our destination, even closing the freeway westward at our very exit on I-70. The close one began with only 1400 acres, but is currently over 30,000 acres, filling the air, as well as the house, with smoke, and rudely obscuring our beloved mountains. The fire farther west eliminated the possibility of enjoying well over half of our planned excursions. But we were able to get to a town we missed on our last Colorado trip (see blog:  Rocky Mountain High). Fairplay is listed as a ghost town in a book that we used as a guide. The little town had a restored section, but as we’ve discovered, if there are utilities available, every ghost town has become home to those willing to commute, live on whatever stipend they get, or make a living off tourists. Fairplay, though, is worth the time if you are nearby. Our visit, though, coincided with the closing of I-70, which forced travelers to reroute westward. Many cajillions of them ventured south from the freeway through Fairplay. And many of those thought Independence Pass was a good idea. There were so many 18-wheeler issues that the authorities closed that route to everybody, cancelling one of our few away-from-smoke excursions. It put us in mind of a trucker dude following GPS up Mt. Nebo in Arkansas. He was high-centered on a switchback and was waiting on a tow truck, blocking the entire road. Another GPS follower was down the inside gorge of a switchback on Hwy 23 - called the Pig Trail in the Ozarks. We managed to get around him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Picture above is the old jail at Fairplay.
On this trip we house sat in a McMansion on a golf course. We were daily reminded that we would never live in a house with stairs. Let alone a 3-story. It was fun watching golfers. One gal hit a tee shot directly into a pond about 80 yards away, where she immediately sent a second try. Another golfer dribbled his drive about forty yards. The most fun was a foursome of teenaged boys. They hit ‘em sideways, and every-which-ways, even kicked ‘em, not bothering to ever get the balls into the holes. No doubt they were not paying for their experience.
Tumblr media
Cars with Colorado tags, excepting the ubiquitous Jeep Wranglers and pick-up trucks, have been 99% foreign-made in this region (Vail, Aspen, Breckinridge). And among the pick-ups, the American brands had strong competition from Nissan and Toyota. I guess these folks have a different concept of loyalty and patriotism than I.
And speaking of cars, our Ford Edge, Sparkly, thoroughly enjoyed his rutted dirt road trip into the mountains (no matter how Debbie worried about him). That road travelled thru cattle ranches, including the Hardscrabble Ranch. (Turns out there are several Hardscrabble Ranches.) I’d sure like to see cowboys try to drive the cattle from the very steep Aspen woods and piney mountain ranges. Speaking of … we did see horse-back cowboys moving cattle somewhere near Pueblo.
Tumblr media
As we do, though this year from the drive-up window, we enjoy local cuisine. I had tacos that reminded me very much of the local favorite plaza in Matamoros, Mexico. At another, where the gal answered my question that, “Yes, everyone living here must be a skier,” we got the best soft-serve ice cream ever. Unfortunately, Debbie got chocolate, a rare treat for her, which prevented me from finishing hers, as is our custom.
Driving eastward, away from the smoke (we thought), we drove to Mt. Evans, the tallest mountain that you can drive to the summit. Hah! – closed due to Covid19! Oh well, we still got a very nice mountain hike, and at a resort a great lunch and blueberry pie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the restaurant on Mt. Evans
Our house sit included a parrot, a creature Debbie would like very much to have put on a spit. In addition to its 50-100 word vocabulary (wish I could put a video here), it has mastery of human sounds. It can mimic a variety of computer and iPhone toots, beeps, and whistles. It can make the submarine sonar sound that puts you right into the movies. Unfortunately, it can also convince you that the house is afire with its spot-on smoke alarm shrill.
Tumblr media
(Just kidding!)
As always, we had our eyes out for old school houses, churches, and bridges. And wildlife. Believe it or not, we spied a wild bear walking railroad tracks. By the time we could get turned around and back to him for a picture, he was, of course, gone. He was brown, but more than likely a full-grown black bear by the way he lumbered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steamboat Springs was more our way of living, more home-like than the Idaho Springs – Vail corridor along I-70. Steamboat Springs retained a semblance of the historic town … and a Kum-n-Go and a McDonalds. Alas, no Sonic. There was a very nice waterfall hike nearby that would be fabulous in May or June.
Tumblr media
But as if to cap off our adventure, a fire erupted just off the highway where there had been none as we had just traversed the area that very morning. It was close enough to see the somber, higher-than-tree-top flames.
Tumblr media
Hoping for clear mountains, we plotted our return trip through the central part of the state. Nope, smoke all the way. We really felt for the folks that not only had to suffer the economic losses related to Covid-19 closures, but then weeks and weeks of fire and smoke. Recovery from a mountain forest fire takes over 50 years.
But alas, we are who we are, adventurers! Fortunately, the home owner opted to cut her trip short. Unfortunately, it was because she was forced to evacuate her airbnb due to the California fires – a true irony.
Next stop, the New Mexico Rockies near Sante Fe. Yay! Adventure on!

Volkswagen Atlas and Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro
Text and Photos by Michael Hozjan
Volkswagen Atlas: Getting it right
I wasn’t supposed to like the Atlas. It’s big, square and the furthest departure from what we’re used to from Volkswagen in the company’s history. They call it a seven-passenger. Hell, in the sixties my buddy’s parents stuffed more people into a Beetle. I’d hate to see how many kids and adults they’d fit into the Atlas!
Tumblr media
Like I said I wasn’t supposed to like the Atlas and I don’t. I love it. Volkswagen has gone out and broken all the rules and given us a behemoth (it’s nearly 200 inches long) that’s as easy to drive as a compact sedan, is as smooth as a limo and then turns around and is as agile as a sporty sedan.
Tumblr media
The Atlas doesn’t replace any outgoing model as we were led to believe. It’s an all-new model geared for the big gulp, super-size me, generation.  Unlike other mid-size SUVs like the Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot whose greenhouses feel claustrophobic despite their seven and eight passenger cargo ability, the Atlas feels airy. No matter which of the three rows of seats you choose, foot, leg and elbowroom is abundant. Slide the second row all the way back and your passengers can actually cross their legs (shades of 1950 Cadillacs)! Likewise getting into the third row seat, usually a backbreaking chore left for the rug rats, is a cinch even for adults thanks to the folding and sliding second row seat, which can be articulated with one hand. Incidentally the third row is an option and VW also has second row captain’s chairs on the options list (standard on the Execline).
Tumblr media
While we await the arrival of Volkswagen’s new minivan, the Atlas can serve as both a people and cargo mover thanks to a whopping 97 cubic feet of space with the second and third row seats folded. Even with all the seats up there’s still an impressive 21 cubic feet behind the third row.  Both rear row seats split to offer a slew of seating/cargo carrying capabilities. Need more space; the Atlas has a 5,000 lb towing capacity (V6 model).
Tumblr media
Oh and did I say the Atlas’ interior is quiet. Very quiet. That is until you turn up the sound on the sat radio through the intuitive touch screen of the infotainment system and light up the Fender speakers peppered throughout the truck. Honda, Fiat, Alfa and a slew of other manufacturers should take note of the VW’s user-friendly (read uncomplicated), instinctively placed infotainement controls.
Tumblr media
The Atlas is available in front-wheel-drive and VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive. You get a choice of two engine options; a 2.0L turbo charged four that develops 235 horses and 258 lb.ft. of torque or the 276 horsepower 3.6L V-6 that produces that delivers 266 lb.ft. of torque. Both connect to an 8-speed automatic tranny with Tiptronic.
Tumblr media
Ever been frustrated where to stow your blind? VW has the answer.
Tumblr media
Duh!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh come on!
Tumblr media
A friend of mine who worked at a local VW dealer once told me how a fellow mechanic would use the term Mickey Mouse to describe a non-useful item on a car or an item with no design sense what so ever. The term stuck. The fake twin exhaust tips (above) are the first time I’ve used it on a VW product. Yes that’s the real exhaust pipe under the fake one!
Prices start at $35,690 for the 2.0L powered Trendline, which is almost in par with the lid trim line price of the smaller Tiguan. Next up the ladder is the Comfortline at $39,690 with such amenities as adaptive cruise control, heated front seats and washer nozzles, pedestrian detection and sat radio added. My Highline starts at $48,990 and nets you the V6 plus a power tailgate, heated tushies for the rear seat passengers, panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats.  The good news is it’s still priced under the entry level Toureg! Then there’s the top of the line Execline which starts at $52,540 which adds 20” wheels, 12 fender speakers, a digital cockpit, park and lane assist…
Our Kurkuma Yellow Metallic Atlas drew a lot of attention and one or two even liked the color!

Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro: Old school cool
“I can’t believe they’re still making this dinosaur!” exclaimed Eric Descarries, my co scribe, here at Adrenaline Auto Guides.
“Yup, and I’m glad they do.” Came my response.
Obviously we have different visions of what an SUV should be. Eric is of the new school, unibody construction. I on the other hand, still lean more towards the old body-on-frame construction. Maybe it’s the hot rodder or the off-roader in me.
Tumblr media
Oh I know I’ll have lots of letters about how unibodied cars have crumple zones to keep their occupants safer than their body-on-frame counterparts and how unibodied cars have withstood the test of time when it comes to rust.
Tumblr media
It all depends on what your definition of a SPORT-UTILITY vehicle is, and over the years the term seems to have lost it’s meaning. Today most SUVs are little more than overgrown station wagons with all wheel drive. That’s precisely why we have nonsensical terms like crossover. To me a sport-utility meant you could haul all your gear deep into the woods or across the desert in relative comfort protected from the elements, unlike a 4x4 pickup where your gear would be exposed. The sport portion was more towards hunting, fishing, crossing deep ruts and deeper mud holes, making it to the lot where you hoped to one day build your cabin. And utility meant the truck would be able to haul your construction materials/gear up with you. It didn’t mean how many rug rats you can haul to the baseball diamond – which is what it seems like today’s so called SUVs are all about, even our beloved VW Atlas falls into that category.
The early Jeep Wagoneers, Ford Broncos and Chevrolet Jimmys are a prime example of what I’m talking about. Oh and off-roading doesn’t mean going through the 8 inch trench the construction crew dug up on your street. I’ve taken sports cars through deeper holes.
Tumblr media
What makes the Toyota 4Runner the last true sport-utility? To begin with I’ll echo my previous statement, it’s a rugged, utilitarian that will just about go anywhere.  While most SUVs, crossovers and the like are built on car-based chassis, the 4Runner still gets its DNA from a pickup.
From a performance aspect, all 4Runners, regardless of which of the five trim packages you opt for are powered by a 4.0 liter, 270 hp, V6 that pumps out 278 lb-ft of torque mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.  My Toyota Racing Development Pro (there’s also a TRD Off Road) came with 4-wheel crawl control, TRD Bilstein high-performance shocks with remote reservoirs, TRD-tuned front springs, 17” black aluminum wheels with 31.5" Nitto Terra Grappler all-terrain tires.  A locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select system and Downhill Assist Control all work in conjunction to get you in and out of the toughest trails. The four-wheel-drive system is of the part-time variety and can be engaged with a manually operated transfer case. Hey these systems, like the 5-speed automatic are bulletproof and have proven themselves over the years. Adding some macho visual appeal while protecting your ride from rocks and logs is a heavy-duty aluminum skid plate mounted up front.
Oh and yes the TRD did get plenty of admiring stares and thumbs up.
As capable as the 4Runner is in the rough, on the road the Toyota doles out a smooth, comfortable ride despite the noisy off-road tires. If there’s a downside to the 4Runner it’s the truck’s off-road traits translate into more sway than usual when doing quick lane changes. The five-speed automatic may be great for tackling the Rubicon but on the highway the truck could also use an extra gear. Let’s not forget the 4Runner hasn’t had a major upgrade in years.
Tumblr media
My sunroof-equipped tester’s interior was more truck-like than car-like with large buttons that can easily be manipulated even with gloves. Fit and finish is Toyota quality. Red stitching on the black leatherette seating is a nice touch and rear seat passengers get a provision to tilt their seat backs for added comfort. There is a third row option on the other trim lines. The tester offered an impressive 47 cu.ft. of cargo space behind the second row seats – that’s one of the largest trunks in the midsize SUV category. But what truly sold me on the 4Runner is the opening rear window, a feature that has disappeared off the SUV/crossover/station wagon landscape and something that all of my friends with SUVs have wished for.
Tumblr media
The tall off-road tires and ride height make ingress and egress a challenge, but isn’t as bad as the first generation. Showing the truck’s age is the lack of techno gadgetry such as blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning. You’ll have to old school it and pay attention to the road! However, Vehicle Stability Control, Active Traction Control and trailer sway control are all part of the base vehicle, which starts at $44,800. The TRD Pro package adds another $7395 to the tag. The Toyota can tow 5,000 lbs, only the Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango can tow more, 7,400 lbs.
If your looking for a large station wagon with all-wheel drive and car like ride, look elsewhere, this Toyota is not for you, But if you want a rugged, tough workhorse that will carry you, your buds and your gear over any kind of terrain, your choices are very limited and none has the opening rear window on the hatch. Add Toyota’s high resale value and the choice gets narrower.
Tumblr media
At the end of my tenure with the 4Runner I must admit it was hard to surrender it. Like the Jeep Wrangler, it may not be the greenest vehicle, I managed to squeeze out 12.5L/100kms of the good stuff, but the feel of the truck is so unique and yes it’s smoother than the Wrangler.

Extreme Adventure: 7 Jeeps for Girls Who Love Off-Roading
Tumblr media
Despite stereotypes indicating the contrary, research shows that women are safer drivers than men.
Men get in twice as many fatal crashes as women and are more likely to drink and drive. Which explains why women benefit from lower car insurance premiums.
For female drivers who want to guarantee safety and no restrictions on where they can go when they’re behind the wheel, a Jeep is often the vehicle of choice. An American heritage brand with a loyal following, Jeep’s utility vehicles has come to define their class.
After all, cruising through the city is great, but Jeeps and off-roading is a match made in heaven. And, as any Jeep-driving woman knows, getting off the beaten path in a Jeep is a feeling of freedom rivaled by few experiences in life.
If you’re looking for a new off-road vehicle, read on for our guide on the best Jeeps for girls.
1. Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk
A firm favorite and one of the best Jeeps around is the Grand Cherokee, with the Trailhawk model offering the pinnacle in off-road spec.
An adjustable air suspension provides all the lift, while 30.5″ all-season tires ensure you’ll be able to tackle any terrain. Inside, the leather and suede trim keeps things stylish, and the large touchscreen display offers info on the performance, suspension, and pitch.
Underneath, you’ll find skid plates covering the transfer case, front suspension and underbody protecting the vital components that make for a powerful ride every time.
2. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon
If you’re heading off for a solo camping trip and want to look the part, the Jeep Wrangler is one of the best off-road jeeps to take on your next adventure.
With a dual-vented hood, upgraded Dana 44 axles, 32-inch tires, the Rubicon Recon special edition is equipped and ready for a ride into the wilderness. This Jeep also comes with heavy-duty cast covers and model-specific rock rails for added protection against rocky trails.
And then there’s the electronic sway bar disconnect switch, which allows for optimum wheel articulation while off-roading.
From cool features to a massive approach angle, the Rubicon Recon has it all thought out for a smooth ride and little chance of getting stuck anywhere, ever.
3. Jeep Patriot Latitude
Combining rugged features and iconic styling, the Jeep Patriot is a good choice for drivers who love the Jeep aesthetic but want something more compact. And, thanks to the way it ups the ante in terms of standard features and optional extras, the Latitude model is one of the best Jeeps for women.
Despite being a compact, modest SUV, the Patriot Latitude can hold its own when off-roading, while it provides a more luxurious road experience than more rugged Jeep models, such as the Wrangler. And its affordable price point makes it superior to any other comparable compact SUVs.
4. Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk
If you love the Jeep Grand Cherokee but don’t need such a big SUV, the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is a smaller alternative that’s just as solid.
Built for adventure and ready to roll, the rugged Cherokee is great for getting you to some seriously isolated destinations. Just remember to pack these essential survival items to make sure your outdoor adventures go as smoothly as your ride.
As one of the best Jeeps for women with an adventurous side, it includes skid plates, tow hooks and other features for trail-tracking fun. Plus, this model comes with a 271-HP V6 for plenty of power, as well as secure storage thanks to the Jeep Cargo Management System.
While it seems they’ve thought of everything, if you need great gift ideas for women who have Jeeps, check out this website for inspiration.
5. Jeep Renegade Sport
If you’re searching for a Jeep on a budget or a small crossover, then the Renegade Sport is the one for you.
The Renegade Sport is a good subcompact SUV with a range of modern features and the off-road abilities you’d expect from a Jeep. Daily city-friendly driving is a breeze too, and cool amenities like a rear-view camera, Bluetooth and a touch screen are standard from 2018 onward.
Although some rivals might be more fuel-efficient, few can compete with the Renegade’s off-road prowess, user-friendly tech features, and stylish interior.
6. Jeep Cherokee Sport
For some, the sleek style of the Cherokee Sport might seem to deny its Jeep heritage. But fans of this model see it as the company embracing a more forward-facing perspective.
This Cherokee comes with a strong V6 engine option, an absorbent suspension and interior tech features such as a touch screen. And, while this model is right at home in the city, it offers a unique off-road capability for a small and sporty crossover.
And, for those family trips into the wilderness, the Jeep Cargo Management System comes as standard to help you tie down everything you might ever need.
7. Jeep Compass
If you’re in the market for an affordable compact SUV with an upscale interior and more than its fair share of terrain-tackling ability, the Compass is a good bet.
That said, this model isn’t without its negatives. It lacks a little in cargo space and its nine-speed automatic transmission can be slow to accelerate.
But the Jeep Compass more than makes up for these cons with good fuel economy estimates, one of the lowest MSRPs in its class, a great infotainment system and the off-road power you’d expect from a Jeep.
The Best Jeeps for Girls
As this range of Jeeps for girls shows, finding your perfect Jeep has never been easier with such a high standard across all models and specs.
From sleek and sporty numbers to rugged machines, Jeeps appeal to women who don’t want to limit their driving to the daily grind of the city.
Of course, if you’re in the market for a new Jeep, you’ll also need to plan an adventurous road trip to put your new baby to the test. But, whether you head for the West Coast or opt for a hiking trip to Lake Tahoe, you can be sure that your new Jeep will be ready to go wherever you go.

Between tradition and modernism Where is the authenticity? Where are these vehicles of character? Those who just yesterday made you want to make detours, to leave several hours in advance, just for the pleasure of being at their wheel, to appreciate their characteristics? Today the idea is advancing that a vehicle is appreciated through its design, comfort, connectivity, functionality, safety and respect for the environment. Nobody is against virtue. All vehicles are trying - some better than others - to fulfill this new definition, to meet these new expectations, but luckily there are still vehicles "to live". And the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of them.

Like the Hummer (H1), the Jeep (Wrangler) or even the Lamborghini (LM002), the Geländewagen initially made a career in the armed forces (at the services of the Shah of Iran) before embarking on a civilian career. It began in 1979 and has never really stopped since - this - first - renewal that will probably go unnoticed by many consumers. Although the "new" has retained only five elements of the "old" - the push button of the doors, the spare wheel cover, the washer-wash nozzles and the towing hook, the Geländewagen looks like always to a "brick climbed on 4 wheels" for some or "the incarnation of force" for others. Tastes, like colors, we do not discuss, but the facts yes. In this regard, compared to the previous version, this Mercedes occupies more space in the street or the square of sand, it is according and leaves, as formerly, whistled the wind on its sheets. Its increased length and breadth naturally favor the clearance on board - - where one once felt confined - especially to the rear seats. In the front, the space for the feet appears also counted.

While remaining faithful to its original form, the dashboard accommodates within it a digital instrumentation of 12.3 inches of the most modern and easy to consult. In addition all the security features developed by Mercedes are present. From blind spot sensors through the lane change detector to intelligent cruise control. Everything is there, including the Apple Carplay app.

Behind the facade In spite of its chainsaw profile, this G-Class has nothing crummy even if it is based on a scale chassis. On the contrary, everything has been reviewed. Starting with the suspense elements that do not nod anymore as if you were climbing on the back of a camel. At the front, there is an independent double wishbone suspension, while the rear end remains faithful to a rigid bridge with longitudinal guide arms and a Panhard bar.

Lighter than 200 kg, better suspended, the G-Class has two variations in its catalog. The placid G550 ($ 134,000 and the thundering G63 AMG ($ 167,000) If your design of a commercial vehicle is limited to climbing a sidewalk chain or unexpectedly putting a wheel on the lawn of your home, better remember the services of the G63 AMG Powerful at will (577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque), more dynamic to drive, with side exhausts like the hot-rods of yesteryear, it makes the additional expense of 33 $ 000 perfectly justified However, the driving experience is not the same as driving a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, which is probably less powerful (541 hp), but slightly faster, more agile, and in principle less expensive, less exclusive too, it is true. Because even though the on-board driving aids give you more confidence driving, the G63 AMG requires a good pair of hands and a good understanding of mass transfers to guide it in tortuous meanders. Otherwise, it is better to fall back on the G550. It will probably take 1.1 seconds more to reach 100 km / h after a stopped start, but will stop less frequently to refuel as long as it concerns you. It has, like the G63 AMG, a rack-and-pinion steering (formerly a ball-and-socket steering) with good feel and good wheel-holding, no more, so you do not have to pay the $ 3,000 required by Mercedes to increase maximum speed usually limited electronically. 2020 is proving to be an important year for Ford. They created a lot of excitement when they declared that they would stop producing all of the passenger vehicles other than the Mustang from the American market. That means that the Taurus, Fusion, Fiesta, C-Max, and Focus have seen their last days after many years and many more units have gone through the production line.
With that said, Ford is working on being a leaner, lighter, and more focused car company. Many believe this is the right move in a quickly evolving and cutthroat industry. So what’s in the 2020 Ford Lineup?
Continue reading and we’ll walk you through everything you need to know
2020 Mustang Shelby GT500
The Shelby is just one of many new Ford cars worth knowing about.
In 2019, Ford presented us with the most powerful factory Mustang ever built. The 2020 Shelby GT500 comes with a 5.2L V8 powerplant, which is similar to the GT350’s. A big difference though is that the GT500 doesn’t use a flat-plane crank.
The powerplant is made of hand-built aluminum-alloy and uses a 2.65L roots-type supercharger. This helps to boost the power output to an incredible 625 pound-feet of torque and 760 horsepower.
While the transmission isn’t manual, you do get a nice 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that can also be found in the Ford GT.
2020 Bronco
The Ford Bronco has been out of commission since 1996. But after years of absence, it’s finally back and better than ever.
This car is built upon the Ford Ranger and offers some tough competition to the Jeep Wrangler. It will also be coming out in both long and short wheelbase configurations (aka four and two doors) and it comes with removable doors and top.
Ford is also working with Magna PT on developing a new manual 7-speed gearbox. Another cool thing is that the Bronco will be getting a hybrid setup.
2020 Ranger
The new Ford Ranger features top of the line towing and payload capacities of 7,500 and 1,860 pounds respectively. This mid-size truck is available in both the SuperCrew and SuperCab configurations with trim levels that correspond to the bigger F-150.
A new 2020 addition is the FX2 package which is only available on the rear-wheel-drive models. That package is meant for people who love to go off-roading. It also adds specially tuned suspension, an electronic-locking rear differential, and off-road tires.
The entire fleet of Rangers in North America is getting the same engine. That’s a 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cylinder which provides 310 pound-feet of torque and 270 horsepower. There’s also an automatic 10-speed gearbox.
It should be noted that both the all-wheel- and rear-wheel-drive configurations are available throughout the range.
2020 Explorer
The Ford Explorer hasn’t truly been updated since 2016 when it was given a mid-cycle facelift.
The sixth-generation Ford Explorer first debuted in 2019. It’s based on the Lincoln Aviator and shares that vehicle’s CD6 platform. But the Explorer comes with a more affordable price.
Even though the next-generation models aren’t incredibly different from the previous ones in terms of the design language, these models still show major upgrades in all other areas. The 2020 Ford Explorer offers a three-row SUV and some exciting new driving dynamics.
The new Explorer also comes with three different powertrains. Most consumers will get to choose between 3.3L naturally aspirated V6 with 318 hp or a 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cylinder with 300 hp.
Both of these engines are available in all-wheel- as well as rear-wheel-drive configurations. And they’re paired with a modern 10-speed transmission.
A smaller number of consumers will get the optional 3.0L twin-turbo V6. This engine is available on the Platinum trim and new Ford Explorer ST only.
The twin-turbo engine will provide you with 385 pound-feet of torque and 360 horsepower. However, the ST model is going to get you 415 pound-feet of torque and 400 horsepower. Ford also gave the ST a stiffer sport suspension which is nice.
2020 Expedition
The biggest SUV by ford was given a makeover for the 2018 year. While it’s not a whole different in 2020, it does now come standard with Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of electronic features and its Sync 3 infotainment system. Co-Pilot360 includes blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alerts, pre-collision assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping system, and other helpful features.
The 2020 Ford Expedition comes in two distinct sizes. The Expedition MAX comes with a 131.6 inches wheelbase. And the regular Expedition has a wheelbase that measures 122.5 inches long.
Both of these sizes are spacious and share the same drivetrain.
Each Ford Expedition comes with a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine no matter what the trim level or wheelbase is. That engine delivers 470 lb-ft of torque and 375 horsepower across most of the range. However, the Platinum trims deliver 480 lb-ft of torque and 400 horsepower.
All of the Expeditions come with a choice between four-wheel- and rear-wheel-drive. And they all come with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The four-wheel-drive system comes with four different driving modes, including one that simulates rear-wheel-drive by utilizing a 2-speed transfer case.
The Importance of Knowing About the New 2020 Ford Lineup
As we can see, there are a lot of upgrades coming to the new 2020 Ford lineup. And pretty much all of them help to show that this is a car company that’s tough to beat.
Ford is an auto manufacturer that’s changed a lot over its 100+ year history. No matter what the economy or market throws at them, they continue to adapt and innovate. And 2020 is no different.
The only real question is, which Ford are you going to get?

2020 Jeep Wrangler Vs Grand Cherokee: Full Head To Head Review
There’s something to love about both the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler. They are both the latest in the jeep range and are guaranteed to give the owner of any of these long-lasting masterpieces joy and satisfaction. However, with properties like these, there is always a problem of choosing which one is right. This is why we at Vipautoli are more specialized in helping you choose the vehicle that is best for you and letting you get the most amazing leasing deal you can ever get in Long Island.
First of all, we need to make a strict comparison of both vehicles;
COMPARISON OVERVIEW
Comfort:
The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a bit more rear passenger seat space than the Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep Wrangler will be a hit with the tall drivers and passengers in their front seats, as it has a larger front head and legs than the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which can be a major deciding factor when considering a Jeep Wrangler Lease.
Ease:
The Jeep Grand Cherokee requires fewer stops at the gas station than the Jeep Wrangler, making it more suitable for driving. Due to its lesser gas requirements than its counterpart, the Grand Cherokee Lease isn’t a far-out option for drivers on a budget.
Cost:
There are many factors to consider when calculating the total cost of a vehicle. The main concern is the Manufacturer’s Recommended Retail Price (MSRP). The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a bit more expensive than the Jeep Wrangler. Another issue is the destination charge, which is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle to the dealer where it was built. Both the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Jeep Wrangler have similar destination charges.
Dimensions:
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a slightly longer width than the Jeep Wrangler. If you go with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, you can wander around the block looking for a space big enough to park more often than with the Jeep Wrangler.
Driving:
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has much less torque than the Jeep Wrangler, which generally means it won’t feel as fast or powerful than the Wrangler.
Handling:
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a longer turning radius than the Jeep Wrangler, making it a little more difficult to operate in and out of tight spots.
Towing:
If you have something to pull on, the Jeep Grand Cherokee will do just like the Jeep Wrangler, since they have about the same towing ability. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has less horsepower than the Jeep Wrangler, though.
Interior:
The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers more capacity than the Jeep Wrangler, making it the best choice for anyone in touch. With the Jeep Grand Cherokee, you’ll be able to carry more equipment or luggage than the Jeep Wrangler.
Warranty:
The Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with essentially the same basic warranty as to the Jeep Wrangler.
In conclusion, the Grand Cherokee is ideal for use as a family car, but also as a tow vehicle because of its towing ability. In the meantime, the Wrangler is more of a road vehicle that can be applied to all terrains. Whatever the choice for you, we are here to guide you. All you need to do is contact us.
