This painting was from an exhibit at the Delaware Art Museum. I appreciated the story behind it. It's about how the music on the record player unites the two old men shown here. And at one point during the exhibit we did exactly what the men in the painting were doing: sit and listen to "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck.

Our artist of the day is @sandra_yagi! We just released these two small paintings and a series of Yokai drawings in honor of the day! 🖤💙 Check it out online at www.moderneden.com Sandra Yagi was raised in suburban Denver Colorado, the oldest of a typical suburban middle class family. From an early age, she loved science, especially biology, and drawing. Yagi cites the following artists and providing inspiration and influence: Titian, Vesalius, Albinus, Caravaggio, Delacroix, Goya, Jerome Witkin, Bill Viola, Walton Ford, Masami Teraoka and William Kentridge. She has participated in several group shows at the gallery, and most notably a solo exhibition ‘Primal Renderings’ in 2011. She currently lives in San Francisco and her studio is located at the Pacific Felt Factory in the city’s Mission district. #MEartistoftheday #MEsummertour (at San Francisco, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CghZi-1rWNs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When I was a boy, newly interested in art, my mother took me to the Metropolitan Museum. We looked around the lobby, and when we discovered that there were no art classes being offered, my mother lost interest. I begged her, I wanted to see something, so she let me go upstairs alone. The Met then wasn't like it was now: it was like a big warehouse for scholars.
When I got to one dark room filled with paintings I heard a tapping sound, like a cane on the floor. I was fearful, somebody was coming towards me. This guy came up to me -- he had polished shoes -- he put his walking stick on my sternum and pushed me down.
He told me 'Dirty little boys like you should not be in museums like this.'
Years later I realized who that man was: James Rorimer the director of the museum.
from Jerome Witkin: Painting History, Memory and Fantasy
The Met now has a number of Witkins in its collection.
