The Yami Family Part 2
An unexpected development in the future of Clover is that of Ichika starting a family which consists of herself and her two sons, Kai'ichi and Shigehiro.
..........
Kai'ichi Yami
Tumblr media
His name is written as 介一. The first character means "to mediate," "assist," "shellfish" or "armor." The second character means "one."
Age: 15
Birthday: August 30
Magic Attribute: Dark
Appearance: Pitch black hair like his mother with matching bangs parted down the middle. His hair just reaches his shoulders and he ties his more forward hair into small clumps that frame his face and the back hair into a low ponytail. His eyes are a dark shade of gray.
Personality: A natural born genius when it comes to his magic and swordsmanship. And Kai'ichi is brimming with confidence because of that. He knows his strength and is driven to live up to his full potential because of it. Influenced by uncle Sukehiro, he's quick to anger and prefers physical solutions to problems. He rarely thinks before he acts, and even when he does put thought into his choices, he fails to consider the big picture/long term consequences. He's a lot more feral in a fight than either Sukehiro or Ichika, likely getting it from lessons with Ginnojoumorifuyu. He runs on instinct (greatly helped by a keen sense for ki that surpasses even Asta's) and adrenaline. He's great when allowed to act on his own, but in social situations, he tends to put his foot in his mouth. Little sense of decorum and unable to read a room, he's made a lot of enemies by pointing out things that shouldn't be brought up in polite company.
Kai'ichi gets along great with all of his cousins. He helps Saki in her garden whenever he gets the chance to visit Clover and he helps her train to control her wild, black roses. He does wish she'd open up more. Kai and Ann are able to match each other's strength and energy, often sparring to see who is the better swordsman (they currently stand at a tie of 15 wins each and then 32 draws). Because of their similar attributes and Kenzou being the same age as Shigehiro, Kai favors Ken above the girls. Kai'ichi enables bold and stubborn attitude. He befriends Kohaku as a fellow visitor from Hino and even gets his sword repaired by the younger boy. He's met the Cresswells and thinks highly of Daniel who brings out the best in Saki and is amused by Jill bringing out the funniest side of Ann.
Kai'ichi's ultimate goal is to become a member of the Ryuzen Seven just like his mother before him.
Ichika is extremely cagey regarding the topic of the boys' father. She most she states about him is that he has her upmost respect. The boys also don't say much about him and only ever confirm that he is, in fact, still alive.
Doesn't have a good relationship with Liebe or the Bremen devils since he's tried using his Dark Magic on them after hearing of his uncle Sukehiro's battle against Lucifero.
Shigehiro Yami
Tumblr media
The characters used in Shigehiro's name are 成大. The first character means "to become" or "to do something." The second means "big."
Age: 11
Birthday: May 1
Magic Attribute: Shadow
Appearance: Shigehiro's hair is pure black in color, just like his mother's. He keeps it cut short, which leave it looking unruly, much like his uncle's hair style. He has one longer bunch of hair on his left side which he does in a braid, a choice borrowed from Aunt Charlotte. His eyes are gray like his mother's.
Personality: Shigehiro more stoic like his mom, appearing cool-headed and nonchalant. He's is slow to anger and even when upset, he holds himself back from lashing out. Being very careful, he can weave his way through social interactions easily though makes them as brief as he can. This composure has earned him admiration and praise. However, his calm hides his hidden anger. He feels overshadowed by Kai due to not being a natural talent and thinking his Shadow magic is "diluted" Dark Magic. Ichika reassures Shige that she is proud of him regardless of his magic or skill (especially since comparing Kai and Shige is ridiculous with the 4 year difference between them). He ceaselessly pushes himself until he collapses and, at least in his youth, hasn't yet learned to let himself rest.
While he doesn't do a good job at keeping up with Kenzou's energy, Shigehiro does appreciate his cousin's encouragement. He spends a lot of time with Saki and they can carry quite lengthy conversations despite how quiet they normally are. Shigehiro admires Ann's strength but finds it hard to approach her. He's friendly with Kohaku and Vivian, and they often picnic together, though he's much closer to Kohaku as he finds Vivian's stoicism unnerving ("My stoicism is different. I have to actively stay composed while Miss Vivian is more like a doll, eerie and lifeless," he would say if they're compared). Despite being encouraged to spend time with Aimee, Jesse, and Alfred due not being much older than them, he admits that they intimidate him, but in a good way (no one gets what Shige means by that).
Wanting to carve a path for himself outside of the shadow of his mother and brother, Shigehiro eventually leaves Hino in order to travel the world as a wandering mage.
Shigehiro reluctantly takes magic lessons from Nacht because of their shared attribute (wishing to have Dark Magic so he could learn from his mother and uncle). He's shared lessons with Dusk and greatly envies Dusk for the relationship he has with his father.
Unlike the rest of his family, he doesn't use a weapon in conjunction with his Dark Magic and uses unarmed martial arts instead.

FAN ART FRIDAY: ALL THE WARRIORS, Part 4
Tumblr media
This is it, ladies and gentlemen. For the past three weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the community’s original characters in the world of Katana ZERO—from war heroes to psycho killers, and everything in between—drawn by some the most creative and talented fan artists I’ve ever met.
Today we salute the last of New Mecca’s “lost generation” in the jam-packed finale to All the Warriors. Those late to the party can catch up on the previous parts here: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.
Let’s begin.
[WARNING: The work herein is based on fan creations, and should not be considered canon.]
Alpha 7, “Jill” by @daratsugu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She had it all. A sports star since high school, Jill could have made history as a legendary athlete or breathtaking model. But beneath her physique and beauty was a strong heart, one that desired to make a difference in the world somehow. So when government suits approached her seeking peak physical specimens for trials of a ‘radical life-saving drug’, she accepted eagerly.
Not long afterwards, the war began.
Jill’s service record afterwards remains a mystery, given her lackluster communication skills and endemic shyness. But whatever she witnessed on the battlefield, it never blunted her kindness or dampened her faith in humanity. There is comfort in the certainty of her own mortality, and she’s determined to spend her final days doing as much good as she can.

More well-known than the deadliest assassins and most fearsome mafia dons, one man is famous across every restaurant in Chinatown: the ‘chao fan shen’, or “fried rice god”, known for his slovenly appearance, incredible combat skills, and insatiable appetite for his namesake. Of course, that’s not to say he’s a glutton—Six has developed an extremely discriminating palate, and any chef who skimps on the diced pork or sesame oil can expect a sound rebuke.
If only he paid as much attention in everyday life. Because of his poor eyesight and ever-present headphones, he’s an easy mark for thieves like Gamma 12 or enterprising muggers...or so it seems. Chinatown residents swear they’ve witnessed him pull an executioner’s battleaxe from his guitar case, but surely that’s just Eastern superstition. Right?

"Be silent, dress loudly.”
ZZ’s selective mutism hasn’t stopped her from drawing the eye of passerby. Her prominent back scars, perpetual bedhead hair, and psychedelic rainbow clothing are almost begging to be ridiculed. Those who know ZZ are smart enough not to tease her about it; others who make that mistake find themselves adding a few splashes of red to her outfit.
Since moving to the Second District, her fashion sense has actually started a minor fad among its population of wealthy young heiresses and bachelorettes, who have begun tousling their hair and wearing multicolored stockings in crass imitation. She’s even been featured in a few street fashion magazines, albeit unnamed. ZZ doesn’t mind the attention, so long as their photographers stay out of her way and keep their mouths shut...

There may be someone who didn’t want to die, and someone else who no longer wants to live...

Gamma 30, “Thirty” by @meto1030
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just as other Gamma NULLs were violently psychotic or narcissistic, Gamma 30′s disorder was selflessness to a fault, believing any amount of suffering was worthwhile if it made things even a little easier for someone else. As a nurse or aid worker, Thirty could have done so much good, had they not been blessed with extreme reactiveness to Chronos that placed them squarely within a Gamma kill-squad.
Every waking moment was spent in neurosis, desperately thinking of ways they could possibly be of service around base camp, and each rest was filled with nightmares of squadmates buried under rubble or pinned by enemy fire, desperately crying out for help as Thirty fruitlessly crawled to them, trapped in slow motion.
Once the fighting had ended and a ceasefire declared, the only way Thirty could imagine to be of use was becoming a test subject in the government labs, a position typically reserved for NULL candidates too weak to warrant a number and rank. There, at least, they are shielded from the predatory instincts of other NULL who would not hesitate to exploit Thirty’s altruism.

Gamma 61, “Geist” by @dawnygoi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just because you’re living hand-to-mouth doesn’t mean you can’t pursue your passion. Due to their various psychoses, Gamma troopers developed more eccentricities than their predecessors—the most common being increased sensitivity to music. Their preferred genres varied, but a Gamma NULL could be found humming or nodding their head some invisible beat before or after a battle.
For Gamma 61, his favorite beat was the deafening, breakneck rhythm of his trusty man-portable minigun, and he often burned through hundreds of rounds just to hear its song, filled with the sharpest crescendos and deepest bass. Sadly, it’s a luxury he can no longer afford, and he suffers the indignity of killing his targets with simple knives and other concealable weapons in order to afford his ‘medicine’.
—
Gamma 33, “Weasel” by @zebdraws
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a legendary rock star once said, “ You see, you don't have to live like a refugee.”
When government spooks are after your head, you have two choices: spend what’s left of your life on the run, or become the biggest musical sensation New Mecca has ever known.
As a soldier, Weasel was fiercely competitive, treating every ally as a potential rival and going to extreme lengths to win any wager, even if it meant resorting to violence. That never changed after he discovered his love of music, even though his musical talents are utterly dreadful, like most NULL.
His “invasion” of several high-profile concerts prompted many venues in the city to begin employing armed security to patrol their dance floors, most notably Club Neon. However, the untimely death of DJ Electrohead has skyrocketed Weasel to stardom as Second District clubs scramble to book a replacement act.
Gamma 511 by @Am3002814
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On an employment survey for government security, Gamma 511 would fail by every metric: he’s paranoid, meek, and highly conspicuous thanks to his numerous nervous tics that emerge at even the slightest hint of confrontation. Even when mixed in a crowd, he seems to have an uncanny presence that unnerves those around him. Yet his security record is spotless, and none of his charges have ever come to harm.
So what exactly about 511 sets so many ill at ease? Could it be his shifty gaze, restlessly darting about at strangers’ throats, stomachs, and nether regions? Maybe his constant and profuse sweating, staining his ill-fitting trench coat even on a cold winter morning? Or perhaps it’s the faint “ ゴゴ ゴゴ ゴゴ ゴゴ “  that permeates the air as he walks by with his awkward, loping gait...?
Truly, it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for.

Beta 39, by @lyexueyee
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stealth and infiltration is an art, not a science. Beta 39′s brand of assassination involves hiding in plain sight—in a crowd wearing her perpetually tired and glum expression, or standing outside a store with hands on her hips, as if impatiently waiting for someone. She deflects attention so well, no one notices the bent and bloodied length of pipe sticking out of her faux-high school bag.
“Hey, those are some cute hairpins!” A student on the train remarks. “Nnh,” 39 murmurs.
“Oh, you must be part of the kendo club!” An old woman exclaims, and is met with a half-lidded stare and a deep, echoing silence.
Hours later, a beat cop finds a local mobster dead in an alley behind his favorite bar, bearing signs of blunt trauma and several stab wounds from a low angle. His gun lies nearby, not a single shot fired. No suspects are ever found.
Tumblr media
By @lyexueyee
Beta 34, “Ephemera” by @BMb_kngw
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“What use is a tape that can only be rewound three times?”
That was what Ephemera overheard following his fitness trials and physical examination. The researchers had never encountered his like before: a genetic trait that resisted the effects of Chronos, such that a full dose would only allow him a few minutes of precognition and a negligible boost in reflexes—not even on par with Alpha-class NULL. His training results and leadership scores had topped the charts, but by a twist of fate, he barely escaped being sent to the labs.
Even after being assigned to a frontline squad, Ephemera faced continued stigma. Some refused to acknowledge him as “one of them” at all, and rumors spread that his ‘condition’ was contagious, and merely being around him could sap others of their Chronos abilities.
The day he was rushed to the infirmary, his leg a bloodied stump, some jeered that any other NULL could have “reset” to undo such an injury. But oh, how the tables have turned. As it turned out, his ‘condition’ also shielded him from any symptoms of withdrawal. He lives now as a free man, one of the few NULL able to truly leave the war behind.
Tumblr media
By @BMb_kngw
Beta 18, “Gav” by @smugeroni
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actions speak louder than words. Anyone who’s pried into the past of a Cromag War vet knows how bitter and cagey they get, but Gav’s wartime injury lets him dodge questions about his service days and move onto the crucial next step of healing and atonement. Homeless veterans who would otherwise despise those “test tube freaks” are thankful for his constant charity and unreasonably tasty meals.
There are still traces of a fighter behind his gentle smile: his bullet-riddled motorbike lies rusting in storage downtown, and he keeps a gun stowed behind the counter for the occasional mob racketeer. No one knows who steered Gav away from his life as a road warrior—who they were to him, or whether they’re dead or alive—but they take comfort in knowing a man can change, and not always for the worse.
Beta 49, “D.D.” by @sapheiri
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On her first sortie as a rookie NULL, D.D. envisioned a battle worthy of pre-war action movies: fiery explosions at her back, bullets whizzing past her ears, and jets flying overhead as she charged the enemy lines, firing a gun in each hand.
Instead, she found a nightmare. The enemy had set traps and laid ambushes everywhere; the laboratory eggheads had assured her that Chronos had made her immortal, but in that desolate jungle her faith shattered. She was found quivering in a muddy ditch, half-deafened by a close-range blast and wearing socks after forgetting to lace up her combat boots.
Instead of being discharged for proper therapy and recovery, D.D. became a test case for second-generation Prozium, designed to deaden emotions and instill obedience. She returned calm and combat-ready days later, and the researchers commended themselves for their success. They would later come to fear D.D. after seeing her in action.
Today, she can truly realize her former action-heroine fantasies, blasting her way past dozens of gunmen with guns akimbo and walking away unscathed. But she can feel no pleasure from it, nor reflect on the horror at the killing machine she’s become. Some say she still wears her boots unlaced to recapture the rush of danger and fear of death from that first mission, something she has now lost forever.

Gamma 22 by @dodokubobo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An ideal army is a combination of tactical genius and strict discipline. Gamma 22 had neither, leaning entirely on his remarkable aptitude for Chronos and prowess with his twin katanas to propel him through disciplinary headaches that would have earned any other soldier weeks in the brig. Evidently, it worked; drill instructors ignored his constant absence from combat drills and loud snoring during briefings. As long as he got things done, who cared?
This “golden child” mentality has only swelled his ego since the NULL diaspora, taking what he wants and abusing his abilities to do as he pleases. This makes him an obvious target, but many a foe have seen their cunning ambushes and clever traps fall apart in the face of 22′s sheer speed and skill. Among the New Meccan underworld, there is one piece of advice passed down to every aspiring hitman and bounty hunter: “Do not pursue Gamma 22.”

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before the cybernet made information widely accessible to the masses, intel had to be collected the old-fashioned way: through spying, stealth, or skullduggery. This was the perfect calling for Beta 66, who excelled at staying out of sight.
On certain scouting missions, he would wait hours, even days, for the enemy to trip a land mine or succumb to slow-acting poison. And as he waited, he would listen to the sounds of wilderness and scan the night sky through his mask, counting the stars.
In a post-war New Mecca hostile to veterans, 66′s life became a more cloistered affair, surviving as an information broker instead of risking his life behind enemy lines It was only days after his data stream sputtered out that anyone discovered his absence.
One can only hope 66 found the stars he so loved.

Beta 9 “Heads” & Beta 10, “Tails” by Jicker
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dynamic duos are nothing new to the New Meccan lowlife, but Heads & Tails are trailblazers in terms of brother-and-sister team-ups. In between sibling quarrels over the superiority of shuriken or grenades, these two clean up mafia hideouts over twice as fast as a single NULL, wordlessly executing well-worn strategies they developed on the battlefield during their first missions against the Cromags; Heads cuts down obstacles to widen her brother’s line of sight or deflects bullets as he reloads, while Tails pins the enemy with suppressing fire as his sister closes the distance with her blade.
Truth be told, their combined efforts often barely compare to some of the carnage a Gamma NULL could unleash. The difference is that, unlike a Gamma, Heads & Tails can’t be bought, nor bargained with. They can’t be bribed with Chronos or crippled by withdrawal. Whatever their reason for isolating themselves from other NULL, it’s clear that the only allies they need are each other.

Alpha 66 by @ren_hyuga
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stella von Ruthuberia’s regal name suggests a relation to one of the prestigious Old Families, though pre-war records make no mention of her in any aristocratic lineage. How someone of her social status was inducted into the NULL corps remains an even deeper mystery. Some claim her to be an illegitimate heir cast out by her family to die inconspicuously, while a few believe she sought the immortalizing power of Chronos, something beyond what mere wealth could provide.
Since her near-fatal injury and the convoluted grafting procedure that surpassed all previous prostheses, the illusive von Ruthuberia has retreated from the public eye, her estate guarded by patrols day and night.
However, some say her hermetic existence is merely an act, and amid a vast stockpile of ill-gotten Chronos, she is every bit as deadly as when she first donned her jet-black robes...

Gamma 72, “Nightingale” by @throjnx
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Any crime boss worth their salt knew the prospect of having an immortal assassin at your beck and call was too good to be true. It was. The Erlkings, on the other hand, were a two-bit smuggling racket that saw Nightingale as their ticket out of the Fifth District, whose residents could scarcely afford their services or protection fees.
It worked, for a time. None of the other gangs in their district had managed to snag a Gamma NULL, and they quickly packed up and left once dozens of their number went missing, and police seldom bothered to venture that far out. But the Erlkings hadn’t anticipated how much Chronos Nightingale required nor how pure it had to be, neither of which their supplier could provide.
When they tried making up the difference using threats and blackmail, there was only one way things could end.
Alpha 27, “Nina” by @HihumiHii
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like a spider spinning its web, the labyrinthine catwalks and cramped alleys of New Mecca are the perfect hunting ground for a femme fatale like Alpha 27. Her clientele are exclusive and her fees exorbitant, but her unique skillset is enough to outwit any bounty hunter and even the occasional Gamma NULL.
Using a vast network of tripwires and strings that crisscross her territory, she can detect activity through the slightest vibrations, from the pounding of raindrops to the footsteps of a potential victim. Most never glimpse their killer, strangled or sliced to bits in her near-invisible webs of razor wire. Others hunt her fruitlessly, unaware she has long since fled.
Outside of contract killings, she frequents the most exclusive social circles in New Mecca to flaunt her mysterious wealth, and is one of the few assassins capable of operating in the near-impenetrable First District thanks to her unsuspecting government acquaintances.
Gamma 87 by childrenofgungnir
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Gamma 87, each day is a constant battle between “Life’s pretty OK. I got a steady gig and plenty of the blue stuff,” and “What am I still doing here? We lost the war. I keep this up, I’m going to end up dead.”
It’s been over half a decade since Charlotte experienced a panic attack or felt stress at the thought of taking a human life, back when she could still count her kills on two hands. These days, it seems to come easier.
Whenever she sees a penniless Alpha sulking at the bar in withdrawal, she counts her blessings under her breath. But Charlotte can’t help but feel that she’s lost a part of herself in those intervening years—the heartbroken daughter who would have tearfully begged her parents why they let the men in suits take her, instead of the swordswoman who casually sliced them to pieces and emptied their pockets.
Every time, she stops the train of thought right there. Maybe it’s better this way.

There are few things that can surpass the power of effective teamwork, something Gamma 21 and his partner-in-crime Gamma 37 exemplify. Brains and brawn. Long-distance sniping and up-close fisticuffs. Terrible guitar-playing and midnight drag races.
21 is another in a long line of NULL with an affinity for music but almost no talent for it. Zero’s noisy neighbors can’t compare to the tedium of hearing 21 croon and pluck at the same few sour chords for hours, and his housemate 37 certainly doesn’t seem like someone who would put up with it for long.
For some reason, passerby don’t leave him as much money when 37 is hanging around...

While other Gamma troopers favored blades and bullets, Gamma 37 preferred to pummel her enemies with both fists, aided by a pair of high-powered “boxing gloves” that amplified every blow. She scoffed at rookie NULL trying to deflect bullets with their puny blades as her gauntlets easily shielded her from volleys of machine gun fire—that is, until an errant anti-materiel round shattered her glove and nearly took her hand with it.
In the the intervening years, 37 has developed a custom fighting style based around her remaining gauntlet, learning to instead shift her weight and weave between enemy blows to deliver a bone-shattering right hook. She’s even able to use it while riding her motorbike, which has proved invaluable in chasing down targets.

Alpha 12, “Green Demon” by @IDUnknownForte
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whoo, I’ll have to tread carefully on this one. Alpha 12 is apparently a transplant from a Katana ZERO roleplay server, so she likely has lots of existing history that I don’t want to tread on.
What I will say is that I love the idea of a NULL dive bar like Lucky’s Bar and Grill. On Friday night, all the down-and-out assassins trudge in to their usual seats, get extremely drunk, and yell about how they’d better start getting some respect because they “could level *hic* this whole f*cking city if [they] wanted to”, all while Alpha 12 slowly nods her head from behind the counter and pours out another round. Long live the revolution.
Beta 13, “Kata” by @couriervictor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Survival in the Third District is a daily struggle. But for every soldier, there comes a point where survival is no longer enough.
Working for Dr. Alvensleben brought Kata to this point quickly—watching the doctor run hapless trespassers through impossible deathtraps day after day, hunting down targets for an employer he’d never met in person, and receiving his Chronos syringes via a *clink* in the pneumatic tube and a stilted pre-recorded message.
With hope of Gamma 9 stumbling into the Slaughterhouse fading bit by bit, Kata considers the consequences of crossing the only man with the knowledge and resources to manufacture Chronos, and whether he would survive...
Alpha 19, “Tameiki” by @matowaar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are few NULL who could claim to know Tameiki to any degree; to most, she was a terrifying, twitchy blur of facial features, zipping from room to room and victim to victim with inhuman speed. Only her closest squadmates, in moments of intense time dilation, could catch a glimpse of her true face, and even then only an expressionless mask resigned to marching alone amidst an army.
Though still communicating chiefly through writing, she has attempted to overcome her unique circumstances through focused training, such as remaining motionless for extended periods or slowing her speech enough to be audible to average human perception. She has even experimented with Chronos withdrawal, testing if the gradual ebbing of time can let her experience life at the same speed as those around her.
If the ultimate fate of any NULL is to become frozen forever in time, how much longer would that eternity feel to Tameiki...?
Beta 12, “Twelve” by @fresh_fren
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What’s easily broken is not so easily put back together.
Since the Cromags didn’t fully grasp the concept of a ‘non-combatant’, Beta 12′s pacifism in the field earned her ridicule from both her comrades and the enemy. While other NULL treated battles as competitive killing sprees, for Twelve each encounter was like an escort mission—an unending effort to protect squadmates who loved nothing more than charging at machine gun nests with a knife. Can you imagine how frustrating that was?
Despite braving death to retrieve her teammates countless times, she was seldom recognized for her courage, and it became disheartening to incapacitate enemies non-lethally only to watch another NULL shoot them in the head moments later.
Understandably, she hasn’t bothered keeping in touch with her former comrades, and few would believe a kind-hearted pacifist like her was once a veteran, anyway...
Gamma 75, “Elvis” by A Dishrag
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Hitting the broad side of a Cromag hut” was a corny insult that floated around New Mecca during the war, but for Elvis it was a job description, one that he was embarrassed to mention during the morning briefings or off-duty get-togethers at the local bar. ‘Tactical demolition’, he called it, but he knew it was an excuse; most of the sheet-metal huts he destroyed could’ve been knocked over by stiff breeze, not a state-of-the-art EMF railgun firing slugs at 4,000 meters a second.
At least they let him keep the uniform and gun when he left the corps, though “let” would be a strong word for it. He simply stuffed the gear into a Sakura Redux X Gaiden shoulder bag and walked out of the barracks, never to return. So far no one’s called him about it, so he figures it’s safe enough to incorporate into his cosplay outfit as long as he keeps the safety on. Right?
Gamma 13, “Reaper” & Gamma 14, “Mr. Bomber Glove” by @LoverHigh24
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Twice the NULL, twice the withdrawal. It seems some Gamma NULLs, particularly those with complementary skillsets, stuck together in the aftermath of the war instead of turning on each other in their addiction. Rain and Kyle found common ground in their countryside roots, having worked as a team in the final days of the conflict and both sensing the war effort going south.
They’d bid farewell to their neighbors years ago, ready to die as they marched off to war. They agreed they’d be happy enough to see home one last time and spend the eternity lying in their childhood beds, instead of some seedy Third District bar. Yet, as mysterious new shipments of ‘dirty’ Chronos began flooding the market, they find themselves fighting against their former comrades to uncover the source...

Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’re right, spear guy. I don’t know.
I don’t know quite what to make of this guy. His weapon, a Japanese naginata, is quite cool, but last I checked the Cromags didn’t really fight on horseback. His dossier had no name, NULL class, or number. There are no Gamma, Beta, or Alpha NULL OCs I’ve received with the number ‘32′ that was mentioned in his bio. Wish I had more to say, but it feels like I fell asleep in history class and only caught the last three minutes of an hour-long lecture.

As an Alpha-series cadet, poor Antonio saw action in the opening weeks of the Cromag conflict—before the NULL program became semi-public knowledge, before the “child killings” were in the Second District papers and protest signs, and long before the introduction of Gamma NULL, who didn’t much care who they killed.
When an enemy sniper had his squad pinned down from a high forest ridge, Antonio was ordered to flank them while the others drew their fire. Tactically, it was sound: he was the smallest and thus stealthiest member of the team. But what he found was  a Cromag child prone in the grass, barefoot and scanning the jungle treeline with a rifle far twice his size. A boy or girl, he couldn’t tell nor recall afterwards, for the next thing he remembered was being pulled off their mutilated corpse, his fingers around a bloodied combat knife and voice hoarse from screaming.
His commander patted him on the back and congratulated for a job well done, ignoring the bloodshot terror in his eyes. For weeks after he was plagued by nightmares, his hands awash in red and multicolored eyes, so many eyes, staring from the jungle in all directions.
His death would later be ruled as a suicide. He would not be the last.

Gamma 44, “Luminous” by @hieroparsley
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes, one of the best reasons to keep fighting is for another person—not a partner in crime, but someone to protect. At some point, Luminous was as her ward Anomaly is now: aimless and regretful, fearing for their life but lacking any reason to keep living. Since Luminous took care of the government agents who had tracked Anomaly from her Third District apartment and hacker lair, the two have been evading their watchful eye ever since.
Sometimes their friendship is marred by arguments over what to do with Anomaly’s data on the NULL project: Luminous seeks to disseminate it to the public, either via the cybernet or print, while Anomaly argues for simply destroying the data, in the meager hopes it will save them from the government crosshairs. But Luminous has seen what they’re capable of; she remembers torching the homes of Cromag ‘collaborators’ even after they housed and sheltered New Meccan troops. Forgiveness is not in their vocabulary.

And, at last, we’re done.
Over the past month, it’s been great seeing not only the diverse and interesting backstories various artists derived from the scant details of Katana ZERO’s world, but also the friendships that sprang up between fan artists, drawing tributes of each other’s OCs befriending/antagonizing one another and creating an immersive world of NULL just under New Mecca’s surface. It’s been a magical thing to witness, and I hope it continues
A deep thank-you to everyone who submitted their OC to this multi-series showcase, and I’m sorry if it took until now to see your character featured. I needed to save some of the best for last!
I originally planned this event as a finale for the Katana ZERO Fan Art Fridays, but since people seem to be enjoying them, next week I’ll be returning to ‘theme weeks’ for a regular schedule.

How one VC firm wound up with no-code startups as part of its investing thesis
Welcome back to The TechCrunch Exchange, a weekly startups-and-markets newsletter. It’s broadly based on the daily column that appears on Extra Crunch, but free, and made for your weekend reading.
Ready? Let’s talk money, startups and spicy IPO rumors.
How one VC firm wound up with no-code startups as part of its investing thesis
Throughout all the chaos of 2020’s economic upheaval in the startup world, I’ve worked to pay more attention to low-code and no-code services. The short gist of chats I’ve had with investors and founders and public company execs in the past few weeks is that market awareness of no-code/low-code terminology is starting to spread more broadly.
Why? Again, summarizing aggressively, it seems that the gap between what different business units need (marketing, say) and what in-house or external engineering teams are capable of providing is widening. This means there is more total pain in the market, hunting for a solution, often with a tooling budget in hand.
Enter no-code and low-code startups, and even big-company services alike that can help non-developers do more without having to beg for engineering inputs.
I spoke with Arun Mathew this week. He’s a partner at Accel, a venture firm that has invested in all sorts of companies that you’ve heard of — including Webflow, which raised a $72 million Series A last August that Mathew led for his firm. (More on the round here, and notes from TechCrunch on Webflow’s early days here, and here, if you are curious.)
More interesting than that single round is how Accel wound up building a thesis around no-code startups. According to Mathew, Accel had made large investments into companies like Qualtrics, for example, when they were already pretty big and had found product-market fit. That same general approach led to the Webflow deal last year.
At the time, Webflow “wasn’t really defining what they were doing as n- code, they just said ‘we have a very simple drag and drop UI, to build websites, and soon full web applications, very simply,’ ” he told TechCrunch. But, according to Mathew, what Webflow was doing “lined up really well” with the “rising movement of no-code.”
From there, Accel “made a couple [more no-code] investments in Europe where [it has] an early-stage team and a growth team,” along with a few more in India. In the investor’s view, some of the investing activity was “thesis driven because we think [no-code is] a really interesting theme,” but some of the deals “happened opportunistically” where Accel had found “really talented founders in the space that we thought was interesting, executing on a vision that we found appealing.”
In the “span of a year, year-and-a-half,” Accel totted up “seven or eight companies in this no-code space,” which over the last five or six quarters became “a real thesis” for the firm, Mathew said. Accel now has “a global team” of around a dozen people “spending a lot of our time in and around no-code” he added.
Apologies for the length there, but what Mathew said makes me feel a bit less behind. After dipping a toe into learning more about no-code services and tooling (and, yes, low-code as well) it felt somewhat like I was playing catch-up. But as I covered that Webflow round and have since started paying more attention to no-code as well, perhaps you and I are right on time.
(We also recently ran an investor survey on the no-code topic, so hit it up if you want more VC scribbles on the topic.)
Market Notes
For Market Notes this week, we have four things. First, riffs from chats with two public company execs about the software market, some public market stuff and then some neat Airbnb spend data by which I am confounded:
I spoke with Apple MDM company Jamf’s CFO Jill Putman this week, after her company reported its first set of earnings as a public company. I wanted to know a bit more about the education market — a hot topic here at TechCrunch, given outsized rounds and huge market demand — and the medical world.
Regarding the software market for education, Putman noted that schools are buying lots of hardware, and that software sales should follow. Our read from that is that the boom in education software is not going to slow for some time as schools work on reopening.
Ditto the medical market, where Jamf has found uptake as hospitals roll out hardware to patients and families thereof to facilitate all sorts of demand that COVID has engendered. (Hardware needs software, enter Jamf!)
Chatting with the CFO our key takeaway was that there are still sectors that could generate a continued COVID tailwind, even if not all Jamf customers fit that bill. For startups that did catch a wave, this is probably good news.
And then there was Yext, a company that helps other companies’ customers find accurate information about them around the Web, and has recently gotten into the search game. Yext launched at a TechCrunch conference back in 2009, which is a neat bit of history. Anyway, Yext is public company now and we wanted to chat about which industries are driving growth for the former startup, and how the general climate for software is for the company, so we got on Zoom with its CEO, Howard Lerman.
So, which sectors are accelerating from Yext’s perspective? Government, education (again), insurance and financial services. Let that guide your take on the health of various startups.
Turning to the business climate, Lerman had some notes: “I will tell you in Q2,” he said, “things came back a bit from Q1.” In what sense? Retention rates, for one, according to the CEO. A return to form is welcome, but Lerman did caution that some companies were slower to “pull the trigger on big deals.”
Lerman also said that his perspective on the macro-climate has bounced back as well from a local-minima set around 30 days ago.
Public company execs are pretty guarded in how they talk because they have to be. But what Putman and Lerman seemed to intimate is that economic damage — provided you are selling to business, and not individuals — seems more contained on a per-sector basis than I would have anticipated. And that there are some good things ahead, at least in a handful of hot sectors.
Opening our aperture a bit, some SaaS companies struggled this week to meet investor expectations, even as more companies added themselves to the IPO queue. It’s going to be very busy for a few quarters. (Speaking of which, you can find the good and bad from the new Sumo IPO filing here.)
The economy is still garbage for many, but at least for companies it’s improving. And on that note, some data regarding Airbnb. According to the folks over at Edison Trends, things are going better for the home-booking site than I would have guessed. Per the group:
Airbnb’s bookings recovery outstripped its traditional rivals, growing “32% week-over-week” from late April into early June.
And, most critically: “Airbnb spending in July was up 22% over the previous July, and spending the week of August 17 was 75% higher than the equivalent week in 2019.”
Wild, right? Perhaps that’s why Airbnb has filed to go public.
Various and Sundry
We’re a tiny bit short on space, so I’ll keep our V&S dose short this week to respect your time. Here’s what I couldn’t not share:
Read this a16z post on the IPO market. It does a great job pulling the Twitter-bullshit out of regular IPO complaints to make some salient points about what is actually good, and bad, about the venerable initial public offering.
And then read this Fred Wilson piece on SPACs, and how he thinks about them today.
Fast made a bunch of noise this week, launching its checkout product after a lot of hype. I thought they were doing something more than a product launch, given the sheer number of tweets I kept seeing. Not sure how I feel about the final thing, but I covered their raise earlier this year, so wanted to flag this all the same.
And, finally, Palantir. In a new S-1 filing, Palantir kinda fessed up to the fact that its structure makes it look like a controlled company. Danny did the digging on the matter here. And then I shouted about it here.
We got data on Boston’s venture capital results in 2020, broken down by month. Hot damn, that wasn’t really what we expected.
The JFrog IPO pricing dance is going to tell us how much profits are worth in the SaaS world.
And Zoom’s insane, bonkers, hell-yeah quarter.
And with that, we are out of room. Hugs, fist bumps and good vibes, and thank you so much for reading this little newsletter on the weekends. It’s a treat to write, and I hope you like it.
Hit me up with notes at [email protected]. (I don’t know if you reply to this email if I will get the response. But try it so that we can find out?)

First off, you should know the team of ladies behind The Scout Guide Huntsville. (I am going to call this our Scout Guide Huntsville dream team shot!) Somehow we managed to all stand still for five minutes just before the party got started to snap this photo. Left to right: Nicole Thompson of B. Nicole Photography, our TSG Social Event Photographer; Sabrina Simōn, our Social Media Coordinator; Dawn Pumpelly, the Editor and Owner of The Scout Guide Huntsville, Charlotte Wessel of Buckets and Blooms and TSG’s Creative Consultant, and Ashley Vaughn of White Rabbit Studios and the TSG Photographer. And then there were the stunning flower arrangements–oh my goodness! Charlotte Wessel, our Scout Guide Huntsville Creative Consultant and owner of Buckets and Blooms, sourced the most gorgeous local flowers from 1818 Farms, Brosemer Family Farm, Field and Forage, and Collinette Flower Farm. She filled the Ledges’ entryway with a stunning five-foot showstopper and covered every table with unique arrangements and stacks of Scout Guides. Finally, as the party spilled into the final room, Charlotte’s pièce de résistance was the ombré baby’s breath arch that was the perfect spot for a photo for two happy party-goers.

Mapping out the USWNT’s future
Tumblr media
Who you can expect to see come in and out of the team heading into the next World Cup in four years.
The World Cup is over and there won’t be another one for four years, but the United States women’s national team will have to spend that period constantly developing its roster.
There are 12 players 30 or older on the current USWNT, and it had the oldest average age of any team at the World Cup. There’s also some incredible young talent in the youth national team ranks. The squad is likely to experience some significant turnover ahead of the 2023 World Cup, and these are the players you should be keeping an eye on.
But first...
They’re going to run it back for the Olympics
Many of the players on the current USWNT were also on the 2016 side that disappointed in Brazil, and they’re going to want to make amends for that. The Olympics has a smaller roster size — 18 instead of 23 — so there will be some tough omissions. But don’t expect any of the older star players to retire or get cut until after the Olympics in Japan.
Expected to be on their way out
These are players who, due to either age or a recent lack of playing time, will probably not be on every USWNT roster after 2020.
GK Ashlyn Harris — She’s two years older than starting goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher so Jill Ellis (or whoever replaces her) will likely want to start giving the backup reps to a young player and start grooming Harris’ future replacement.
DF Ali Krieger — Krieger is 34 and was out of the team for two years until just before the World Cup, so it would be surprising if she continued past the Olympics.
DF Becky Sauerbrunn — Center backs tend to age better than players at other positions, so perhaps we shouldn’t count Sauerbrunn out. But she hasn’t been at quite her previous world-beating form for club or country over the past couple of years, and she’ll be 38 when the next World Cup rolls around.
MF Allie Long — Long spent more team off the USWNT than on it during the past year and likely made her way back into the squad for locker room chemistry reasons, rather than footballing ones. Unless she starts turning in NWSL MVP-quality performances, she’s among the prime candidates to miss out on the Olympics due to the smaller roster size.
FW Carli Lloyd — Don’t tell Lloyd that a 40-year-old is unlikely to make the USWNT’s next World Cup roster... but a 40-year-old is unlikely to make the USWNT’s next World Cup roster.
FW Jessica McDonald — McDonald finally getting her USWNT shot at 31 has been an amazing story. But unfortunately, the other forwards she’s behind are around the same age, and Ellis is going to need to start succession planning for the front line immediately. That means a young player is likely to take McDonald’s place.
FW Megan Rapinoe — Hey, I’m not going to bet against Rapinoe. But she’ll be 38 when 2023 rolls around, and with her increased public profile following this World Cup, she has opportunities to make a lot more money outside of soccer than she ever did playing the game.
Future unclear
These players won’t necessarily be too old to be at their physical peak in 2023, but for various reasons, it’s not obvious how much of a future they have with the USWNT.
GK Adrianna Franch — On NWSL form, Franch should have been the starting keeper already. At 28, she’s probably a bit too old to take over from Naeher in the future. She might stay on the roster as a backup, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Ellis opt for two young keepers that she rotates behind Naeher.
DF Kelley O’Hara — O’Hara said herself that she didn’t think she’d be able to make the impact she did at the World Cup after her injury issues over the past couple of years. Her ankles might not let her make it another four years at the top of the pro game.
DF Emily Sonnett — There’s no real knock on Sonnett, and no reason she shouldn’t stay in the team. She’s 25, and will probably be better in four years. She’s played well for Portland Thorns. But Ellis doesn’t seem to rate her as highly as her other defenders, and she’s been left off rosters when healthy before.
MF Morgan Brian — Ellis clearly believes in Brian’s talent. Even when she’s been in poor club form or struggling for fitness, she’s gotten call-ups and substitute appearances. But if Brian can’t stay fit for an entire season, Ellis will have to start considering other options.
FW Alex Morgan — No one would put it past Morgan to stay on top of her game for the next four years and chase down Abby Wambach’s record. Her development as a deep-lying forward that is no longer reliant on her pace means she can continue to be an effective national team player well into her 30s. But she’s going to be 34 when the next World Cup rolls around, which is old for a women’s soccer player, so she’s in this section.
FW Tobin Heath — Same deal as Morgan, basically. Her technical skills mean she’ll be useful even if she has no pace, but she’s even older than Morgan.
FW Christen Press — Unlike Morgan and Heath, Press clearly is not first choice at the moment, so she might have a harder time hanging onto her place as she ages into her mid-30s.
Even better next time?
These players are definitely sticking around for the next four years, and they’ll be expected to become the new stars of the team.
GK Alyssa Naeher — Naeher exceeded expectations in her first World Cup as the USWNT No. 1, and she should get better with experience. Goalkeepers usually don’t decline until well into their late 30s.
DF Abby Dahlkemper — She’s one of the best passing center backs in the world at 26, and she should be an even more intelligent distributor of the ball at 30.
DF/MF Julie Ertz — I’m not sure if Ertz’s future is at defensive midfield or center back, but she’s sensational at both of them, and shouldn’t be any slower in 2023 than she is right now.
DF Tierna Davidson — A prediction: Davidson will become the USWNT’s starting left back shortly, clearing the way for...
DF/FW Crystal Dunn — Dunn to move into a wide forward role. She’s one of the best attackers in NWSL and it wouldn’t be surprising to see her take over Rapinoe’s role shortly.
MF Lindsey Horan — Another prediction: By 2023, Horan will be the consensus best player on the planet.
MF Sam Mewis — Mewis is one of the slickest passers in the world, and at 26, she still has room to grow in that area. Expect her to be a truly world class playmaker in four years.
MF Rose Lavelle — It looks like Lavelle has finally put her recurring injuries behind her, and now the sky’s the limit. She hasn’t had an extended run in a club team with decent teammates and an attacking philosophy yet. We have no idea how good she can be.
FW Mallory Pugh — Same for Pugh, and she’s on the same team with Lavelle. Their combinations were nuts in the couple games they got to play together for the Washington Spirit before heading off to international duty. With every other forward on the squad being 30 or older, 21-year-old Pugh will be counted on to become one of the team’s best players quickly.
Fringe players still battling
These NWSL players didn’t make the USWNT roster this time around, and probably won’t for the Olympics. However, their national team dreams are far from over if they play well in NWSL.
GK Jane Campbell — Previously on the roster, Campbell is the leading candidate to start getting Harris’ minutes. She’s having a very solid season for the Houston Dash.
GK Aubrey Bledsoe — Bledsoe isn’t as young as Campbell, and her distribution leaves quite a bit to be desired, but she’s developed into NWSL’s best shot-stopper. If she can improve her goal kicks and passing, she’ll get a NT shot.
DF Casey Short — Short is one of NWSL’s most consistent defenders, but doesn’t make much of an attacking contribution from fullback, which Ellis values. Still, she’s one of the best fullbacks in the country and should be on the roster.
DF Megan Oyster — While the international players were away, Oyster was arguably the best center back in NWSL and one of the biggest reasons that Reign FC moved up into first place. She’s had two caps, and is clearly on Ellis’ radar.
DF Emily Menges — Ask Thorns fans and some will tell you, in a low whisper so no one hears, that Menges is actually the best central defender on their team. She doesn’t quite have Sonnett’s physical talent, but she’s more composed and makes fewer mistakes.
DF Jaelene Hinkle — You probably think that Hinkle is out of the national team because of her personal views on homosexuality, and most fans seem OK with that decision. If that’s the case, she obviously has no path back to the national team. But U.S. Soccer says she was only cut for soccer reasons and that her personal views have nothing to do with her exclusion. If that’s true, her status as the league’s assist leader while playing good defense on arguably the best team in NWSL is going to lead to her being reconsidered.
MF Danielle Colaprico — An injury led to Colaprico having to decline a call-up just before the World Cup, and that was that for her chances of making the roster. She’s been the most consistent holding midfielder in the league since she arrived, though, and should get another shot.
MF Sofia Huerta — This is a weird case. Huerta was tried out at right back by Ellis, and asked for a trade from Chicago to Houston to get more time at that position, in order to make the World Cup team. Houston correctly identified that Huerta was one of the best attacking midfielders in the league, so they played her there, ruining her chances of making the USWNT. Unfortunately, her 2019 numbers aren’t even close to what she did in 2018, and now she doesn’t look USWNT quality at either position. But there’s no denying that Huerta, at her best, is one of the 23 best American footballers. Don’t count her out yet.
FW Kealia Ohai — I don’t know why it hasn’t quite worked out for Ohai. She’s looked amazing in bursts at Houston, and she’s got a few national team caps. But she hasn’t translated her best performances and blazing speed into consistent production yet. At 27, her time isn’t up yet, but the clock is ticking fast.
FW Midge Purce — Like Huerta, Purce is likely considered a right back prospect by Ellis. Problem for Portland is, she’s been balling in a more advanced position, and right back Ellie Carpenter is back from Australia duty. Purce is talented enough to play for the USWNT, but it’s hard to see her getting a chance under the current circumstances.
FW Lynn Williams — The former NWSL MVP has gotten plenty of national team call-ups, but hasn’t quite meshed with Ellis and her system. There’s a serious dearth of prime-age striker talent in the pool, though, with most of Ellis’ options being in their 30s or teenagers. Being a good 26-year-old is enough to get Williams another look.
Coming soon... we think
These young players have turned pro and had a taste of USWNT action. I expect them to become regulars over the next couple of years.
GK Casey Murphy — The prime candidate to replace Harris’ minutes and become Naeher’s understudy. The 23-year-old has played a pro season in France with Montpellier and is currently playing out of her mind for Reign FC.
UT Hailie Mace — Mace is going to make the national team simply because of her ability to play literally every position on the field. She’s getting most of her minutes for Rosengard in Norway at striker, but she’s played a lot of winger, fullback, and even a little center back, on the left and right sides. She’s a player Ellis wants on her bench.
MF Andi Sullivan — Ask any coach in NWSL and they’ll tell you that Sullivan is a lock to be a national team fixture for the next decade. The 23-year-old is already captain of the Washington Spirit and can play any midfield position.
MF/FW Savannah McCaskill — McCaskill has gotten her national team minutes under Ellis at central midfield, but it looks like her new team Chicago Red Stars intend on using her as a deep-lying forward, linking superstar striker Sam Kerr and the midfield behind her. As a hard-working midfield-forward tweener, she could replace a lot of Carli Lloyd’s minutes.
Ones for the longer-range future
These players are rookies or college players at the moment, but they’ve turned in impressive youth national team performances, and are firmly on Ellis’ radar.
GK Meagan McClelland — She was the Big Ten freshman of the year at Rutgers and is already getting called into Under-23 camps at 18 years old.
DF Tegan McGrady — Hamstring injuries have kept the Spirit left back from making a big impact in her rookie season, but if she gets healthy, she’s expected to enter the national team rotation.
DF Emily Fox — Fox already has three caps and is probably the best player still plying her trade in college. The UNC star should become a fixture on the roster whenever Sauerbrunn decides to call it quits.
DF Sam Staab — Staab has exceeded expectations in her rookie year for the Spirit and is one of the big contenders for rookie of the year. She’s incredible at hitting long-range passes with her left foot, something Ellis values.
DF Alana Cook — Currently out of the USWNT hype spotlight due to her move to Paris Saint-Germain. Hopefully she can keep getting paid abroad and doesn’t need to move home to get onto Ellis’ radar.
DF/MF Naomi Girma — The Stanford sophomore can play in defense or midfield, which is certainly a plus for her future national team prospects. With Cook and Davidson gone, she’ll be expected to lead the Stanford defense.
MF Jaelin Howell — The 19-year-old has already been to a senior camp and was the midfield anchor for Florida State’s national title-winning team as a frehsman. She’s already a good enough DM to help any team in the world that doesn’t have Julie Ertz.
MF Brianna Pinto — An intelligent and slick passing midfielder, Pinto has already been called into a senior national team camp. With Dorian Bailey graduating, she’ll now be expected to lead UNC’s midfield.
MF Kate Wiesner — Wiesner has yet to make her collegiate debut, but she’s the No. 1 ranked player in her recruiting class. She should become the starting left winger at Penn State immediately and start making a case for national team looks with her excellent left foot service.
FW Ashley Sanchez — Sanchez has actually failed to reach the heights she was predicted to since she first got called into a full national team camp, but no one is writing her off at 20 years old. With Mace departing UCLA, Sanchez will be expected to take over a starring role this season.
FW Catarina Macario — Brazilian-American Macario is widely considered the best player in college soccer, but won’t be eligible for U.S. citizenship for two years. She’s made it clear that she wants to play for the USWNT, though, and regularly participates in Under-23 national team camps even though she can’t play official games under FIFA rules. She should be fast-tracked to the full national team whenever her citizenship comes through.
FW Sophia Smith — The most obvious candidate for USWNT stardom in the future, Smith has 21 goals in 25 Under-20 appearances, and scored seven goals in 13 appearances for Stanford as a freshman.
There are so many great NWSL and college players we couldn’t fit here
Seriously, watch NWSL. If you’re a real nerd and want to get into this stuff hardcore, you can find great info on youth soccer at Top Drawer Soccer, and college soccer games are usually on streaming services you already have like ESPN3 and ESPN+. There are — no joke — 50 other players I thought of that could have conceivably made this list, so huge thanks to my supremely nerdy pals Fitzcamel and Travis Clark for helping me put this together.

So I thought I’d post Sam and Cait’s too if anyone’s interested.   Sam - Taurus/Monkey Cait - Libra/Goat
Taurus - ARDOR LANGUOR DETERMINA TION PREJUDICE INDUSTRY INTRACTABILITY P A TIENCE GLUTTONY LOGIC COMPLACENCY SENSUALITY JEALOUSY
Monkey - IMPROVISATION CUNNING STABILITY SELF-INVOLVEMENT WIT OPPORTUNISM DECEIT RUSE LOQUACITY LEADERSHIP SILLINESS ZEAL
“I have” Earth, Venus, Fixed
“I plan” Positive Metal, Yin
Here is one Monkey whose ruse and trickery are satisfied to remain in the wings for a lifetime. Taurus settles the busy, agile Monkey character. This is a fortuitous combination of signs.
Taurus/Monkeys are stable. Their equilibrium sticks out all over them. Capable of emotional highs and lows like everybody else, the Taurus/Monkey sets himself apart by dealing with trauma better than most. Beset by loss or tragedy, this creature remains buoyant through it all. Of course he will be aggrieved by the death of someone near. Naturally, he will pine for the lost loved one. Certainly, the Taurus/Monkey is able to sob along with the best of us. But he will also be among the first to rise from a wet pillow, place his feet squarely on the floor and decide to design better days for himself.
I am not describing, however, the jack-in-the-box resilience or the Rooster, who never gets too involved in the first place and therefore digs himself out faster. Taurus/Monkey is, after all, Taurean. He feels things profoundly and is devoted to his emotional attachments. But Taurus/Monkeys are sensible. They know instinctively when to give in. They are not afraid to surrender and start over when no alternative presents itself. Taurus/Monkeys are savvy.
Monkeys born in Taurus will be realistic people. They are not given to vapid dreaming or empty longings for things or experiences they can never have.
Taurus/Monkeys are temperate, take their methodical time about accomplishing tasks and don’t settle for slapdash results. Others to whom the Taurus/Monkey has promised favor, a ride to the PTA meeting or a loan, can count on this subject never to let them down. Taurus/Monkeys will either categorically say, “No, I can’t,” or “Yes I’d be glad to,” with a smile. And if, for some reason beyond his control, a Taurus/Monkey cannot come across with the goods, he will simply and in due time call or write or holler to apologize.
The equilibrium of people born under this marriage of signs is their single most important virtue. When you feel all right about yourself vis-à-vis the world, nothing actually can stand in the way of your happiness. Taurus/Monkeys rarely doubt themselves. Oh, they may have private moments of panic. But you’ll never see a Taurus/Monkey dragging himself along whimpering about how miserable he feels inside. Instead, he will take pains to exhibit his best side, to inspire confidence in others and rarely, if ever, to place blame for his own shortcomings on colleagues or cohorts.
The Taurus/Monkey knows his own strength. Therefore, if a noisy Leo/Dragon or pushy Aries/Ox wants the limelight, Taurus/Monkey doesn’t mind sitting behind the curtain feeding the boss his lines. Taurus/Monkey leadership abilities are obvious. But he doesn’t need to sit on the throne to be happy using them.
Taurean Monkeys are kind, too. They go out of their way to lend a hand, cheer up a sick friend, or jolly up a grump. But with this, despite their basic generosity of spirit, Taurus/Monkeys personify independence. They need no company for activities such as going to movies or concerts, traveling, eating, dancing, and so on. It’s not that Taurus/Monkeys do not adore company. But so at one are they with their own rhythms, they don’t require a second opinion or even a sounding board in order to know what they enjoy in life. So if you need a Taurus/Monkey, you can call on him for help. But when you don’t write SOS in the sky or jiggle the Taurus/Monkey’s chain, he may just be off by himself on a bike hike around Eastern Europe.
It seems we can find no failing in this monster of stability. Yet, people do complain about Taurus/Monkeys. What they say is that Monkeys born Taurean possess such a hearty measure of self-confidence and pep that by comparison, others may feel like just so many slouches. And it’s true. The Taurus/Monkey only offends by reflection. His character is so sterling, his integrity so dear, that others feel small next to him
Taurus/Monkeys are modest too. So we cannot even accuse them of bravado. They’re bright and funny, good listeners and dexterous in the extreme. Taurus/Monkeys are devoted and uncomplicated. But don’t ever try to corner one. You won’t be able to fence him in. Don’t expect him to hang around and mope if rejected or disobliged. This character is all of a piece. Therein lies his unbeatable force.
Love
Faithfulness, as we all know, is relative. Everyone has a slightly different point of view and interpretation of what it means to be constant in love. To a Taurus/Monkey, faithfulness in relationships is directly connected to loyalty, friendship and dedication. This person is certainly adept at loving others. Yet, he will never get involved in any long-term love affair or marriage that threatens to compromise his autonomy. For Taurus/Monkeys, mutual respect and freedom are synonymous with love.
I have never known a Taurus/Monkey whose passion for another human being crippled him. To a Monkey born in Taurus, incapacity is death. If he feels a weakness approaching his knees and can practically hear the butterflies flapping about his stomach, the Taurus/Monkey will be gone in a wink, pleasantly and preferably without harsh words. The Taurus/Monkey is likely to want a longstanding life commitment in love. But the concessions incumbent upon such a commitment may daunt him. The prospect of long dull evenings around the glowing hearth will discourage the Taurus/Monkey from early marriage. And by time he gets around to accepting a love alliance that is sure to cramp his style, the Taurus/Monkey may consider himself too old and set in his ways to actually implement it.
There is something of the eternal child in his character. He’s charming but he is also elusive. Taurus/Monkey is a footloose soul who frequently imagines himself in settled loving care. But very often he ends up like Peter Pan left behind by Wendy and the Boys to fend for himself in Never-Never Land.
Compatibilities
Normally you should be compatible with Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces/Dragons. Dragons and Monkeys respect each other a lot. You also get along with Rats of the Cancer, Virgo and Capricorn persuasions. I’d advise you to look into the possibility of a lifetime Pisces/Rat, too. They are sweet and strong-minded at the same time. I cannot see why you are not allowed a Scorpio/Tiger, but the odds are astrologically against longevity in such relationships. Scorpio/Snakes and Aquarius/Dragons are also forbidden territory. Forget Leo/Ox, Tiger and Horse people. They are too egocentric for you.
Home and Family
Taurus/Monkeys (if they ever get around to it) make excellent parents. They are serious and caring. Also, they have a childlike quality themselves and so are amusing and playful with their kids. And of course they always provide. As siblings, aunts and uncles and cousins, Taureans born in Monkey years are dy- na – mite! The element of liberal movement implied in such nonpassionate relationships appeals to the Taurus/Monkey. He’ll bring his nephew the most extraordinary toys and take his favorite cousins on trips to faraway places. He’ll gladly offer his participation in family projects or build a new swimming pool for his little sister Sara’s suburban ranch house.
In order to develop a healthy Taurus/Monkey child, parents must try to allow him freedom to evolve in his own private space. Taurus/Monkey children may go off on their own too often to please a clinging parent. They will definitely leave any suffocating family atmosphere at the earliest possible moment. To ensure this person’s happiness as an adult, he must always be given choices and never be forced to struggle against excessive authority. And no matter what you do as the parents of this bubbly, capable achiever, he will soon be off into the world to seek his fortune.
Profession
Taurus/Monkeys like to spend money. They therefore usually know how to earn it. As I have already said, these people are industrious and willing to pitch in and help out in almost all situations. These traits do not hinder the Taurus/Monkey’s progress in career pursuits.
Taurus/Monkeys are affable, too. They enjoy meeting new people, exchanging ideas with them and learning new methods of doing things. Sales and public relations are suitable jobs for Taurus/Monkeys, as are positions in journalism or medicine. Most important, of course, is that the career choice allow for mobility. The Taurus/Monkey may, for example make a terrific photographer. But if he is obliged to sit in a dinky office somewhere taking pictures of babies with topknots in a cold white studio, all his talent will drain out before he gets a chance to apply himself. He hates to be confined. But put this energetic photographer on location in the thickest fray of the fashion or advertising world and hear that shutter click gaily away.
Uppermost in orienting a person born in Taurus/Monkey is the acquisition of a sound liberal education. The idle Taurus/Monkey mind is never a happy one. There are few fields in which he will not excel and he is especially drawn to those that excite his curiosity. Once he has a bit of knowledge on a subject that interests him, the Taurus/Monkey can study on his own, research and assimilate for a long time without further tutelage.
Some good careers for Taurus/Monkeys are: Roving reporter, artist, traveling salesperson, actor, producer.
Famous Taurus/Monkeys: J.M. Barrie, Leonardo da Vinci, Harry Truman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jill Clayburgh, Pope John Paul II, Anouk Aimée, Christine Bravo, Christine Ockrent, Elvire Popesco, Michel Audiard, Pia Zadora.
 Here’s Cait's --------------------------------------------------------------------
Libra ~ JUSTICE AESTHETICS MISTRUST GENTILITY EQUILIBRIUM IDEALISM QUARRELSOMENESS MANIPULATION PROCRASTINATION SELF-INDULGENCE INDECISION TALKATIVENESS
Goat - INVENTION LACK OF FORESIGHT PERSEVERANCE WHIMSY GOOD MANNERS IMPRACTICALITY PARASITISM SENSITIVITY TARDINESS PESSIMISM TASTE WORRY
“I balance”    Air, Venus, Cardinal
“I depend”    Negative Fire, Yang
Ostensibly a dependent lover of beauty and equilibrium, this person claims to need a peaceful environment, but we know better. Librans born in Goat years are testy and quarrelsome people. They love an argument, a good old heated discussion, a challenge. The Libra/Goat requires the regard of his peers. He likes to be looked at, contemplated, taken seriously and admired. To this end, the Libra/Goat will do almost anything—once.
With Libra and Goat under the same roof, people born in this sign will be doubly attracted to elegance and finesse. They truly prefer to furnish their lives with ornate classics and line their walls with books than to spend time and money on trendy wardrobes or spiffy automobiles. These characters can be social climbers. As such, they prefer to climb culturally rather than merely be included in the annals of society, party-giving or going. Libra/Goats are a bit light-headed. But they are not superficial.
There is great creativity in the Libra/Goat nature. This person, provided the ambience is secure and safe, can invent and imagine all manner of craft and artisanry. I would not say this subject is a gifted artist in the Picasso sense. But there is, inside the Libra/Goat head, a kaleidoscopic imagination. The Libra/Goat leaps from idea to idea with a special rapid grace all his own. He understands the labyrinthine. He comprehends complexity, and is superbly talented at all sorts of communication.
One of the Goat/Libra’s handicaps is his unwillingness to believe in self. I say unwillingness rather than inability because the phenomenon is more a refusal than a lack. “I can’t. Who cares? Who wants to listen to little old me? It’s not really important. Never mind.” That’s the kind of talk you hear from non-directed Librans born in Goat years.
You see, Librans born in Goat years are extremely sensitive. In their youth they are often drawn to strong, stable types whose very presence seems to promise to shore up their courage. Then, after a while, when the weirdo Libra/Goat sees just what a high price he must pay to be “normal” and “stable,” when he grasps the useless, boring sameness of a life without creation or experiment, he bolts. But this bolting seems to Libra/Goat a terribly cowardly act. He is disappointed in normalcy. But he blames his disappointment on his own unwillingness to “go straight.” This, once again, makeshim lose confidence in himself. As he never had masses of self-belief in the first place, this makes him less effective, and a vicious circle effect sets in.
Libra/Goats are excessive. They are vulnerable to addiction. They are ambitious and fashion-conscious. They are inventive and talented in all sorts of glamour-related pursuits. The trouble with Libra/Goats, besides their intermittent lack of self- assurance, is that they tend to disperse their energies in too many flittings about. They are easily distracted. They must learn to settle on one idea and push it through to its logical conclusion. And they must seek the wisdom of those more thoughtful and sagacious than they. It is by heeding good advice and not flying off the handle till the wood is all chopped that Librans born in Goat years will succeed.
Love
Romance is one area in which the Libra/Goat feels comfortable and capable. This person is gifted for sentimental rapport. He or she will revel in the trappings of love: the candlelight dinners and the trips to tropical islands, the banter and, of course, the sex. Libra/Goats are very pretty people, sort of frail looking and fey. They always dress to suit their looks and have a finely developed nose for style. They will depend entirely on their relationships with their mates. Living alone is out of the question. These people thrive on tenderness and offer top drawer companionship to a mate.
If you love a Libra/Goat, you must first win his or her favors through clever and aesthetic courtship methods. Your Libra born Goat is fatally attractive. You will not be the only one seeking his or her affections. Be unusual. The Libra/Goat cleaves to the arcane and is fascinated by the strange. Ordinary workaday people only attract the Libra/Goat in his very first blush of youthful naiveté.
Compatibilities
You have a propensity for cohabitation with Cat people. You’ll want to choose from Cats born in Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius. There are plenty of Horse subjects out there for your pleasure, too. Try sticking to Gemini, Sagittarius or Aquarius/Horses. They have the necessary earning power to keep you in style. Leo and Aquarius/Pigs also enjoy high standards of living. Aries, Cancer and Capricorn/Dogs are out of the running, as are Cancer and Capricorn/Oxen.
Home and Family
The Libra/Goat is not terribly concerned with decoration. He will be happiest in a messy, intellectual sort of decor with deep worn velvet or leather armchairs and generous working surfaces. He’s not overly conscious of how his or her interior strikes others. He wants it to be comfortable first and beautiful later. Libra/Goats enjoy the haphazardness of the “lived-in” look.
These people make conscientious parents who want the best in culture for their children. Occasionally Libra/Goats seem to be overwhelmed by their children and even a bit bamboozled by them. They don’t like to discipline their kids. But neither can they tolerate being a punching bag for little Johnny or Mary. Often, they allow trouble to build up before stepping in to do something about it. This avant-garde childrearing method leads to its share of yelling.
Libra/Goat kids are too sweet for words. They are loving and enchanting little people whose beauty alone is enough to make you want to squeeze them. My advice? Don’t. Libra/Goat children, like their adult counterparts, are not as fragile as they look. They hate to be treated like dumbbells. These bright people gobble education. The best schools are in order.
Profession
Libra/Goats are not independent people. They must be surrounded by aides-de-camp or buoyed by a well-constructed system in order to achieve their goals. They are talented and innovative. Libra/Goats have natural poise and are mannerly and dress tastefully. They are especially gifted for complex creative work requiring a sense of true invention. Libra/Goats are easily discouraged and can very quickly be overcome by the prospect of having too much on their plates. One dish at a time is the method best suited to the advancement of their artistic natures.
Jobs that best suit Libra/Goats are: freelance illustrator, poet, fashion journalist, scriptwriter, homemaker, graphic artist, musician.
Famous Libra/Goats: Franz Liszt, Pierre Trudeau, John Le Carré, Doris Lessing, Chevy Chase, Barbara Walters, Yo-Yo Ma, Catherine Deneuve, Anita Ekberg, Anthony Newley, Desmond Tutu, Lech Walesa, Julez Roy, Julio Iglesias, Mickey Mantle, Miguel de Cervantes, Pierre Trudeau.

Brexit Is Back: UK Aims to Prepare Public for Jan. 1 EU Break
LONDON—The British government told individuals and businesses on July 13 to get ready for new costs and red tape—but also an exciting “new start”—when the UK leaves the European Union’s economic embrace in less than six months.
The government unveiled details of new border arrangements and a major public information campaign to remind Britons that Brexit has not gone away, even though it has been knocked out of the headlines by the coronavirus pandemic.
Britain officially left the EU on Jan. 31 but remains inside the bloc’s economic orbit until the end of 2020.
Advertisements under the “The UK’s new start: let’s get going” campaign will warn British tourists that starting Jan. 1 they’ll need to buy health insurance, arrange paperwork for their pets and check their telephone provider’s roaming policy when they travel to the EU.
Companies that do business with the 27-nation bloc—which accounts for about half of Britain’s trade—will have to fill in customs declarations and potentially pay tariffs, depending on the outcome of talks about a post-Brexit free-trade deal.
The British government has softened the blow for importers by saying they would not have to complete full customs declarations or pay tariffs for the first six months of next year.
Even with a deal, the UK will need a vast new customs and border infrastructure to deal with a trade that has flowed unimpeded during the UK’s 47 years as a member of the European bloc. The government announced on July 13 that it plans to spend 705 million pounds ($890 million) on new border posts, computer systems, and personnel.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative government says the burdens of Brexit will be offset by new economic opportunities as the UK strikes fresh trade deals around the world.
Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove, who is in charge of Brexit preparations, said the full break with the bloc “will herald changes and significant opportunities, for which we all need to prepare.”
Britain and the EU have given themselves until the end of the year to strike a deal on trade, security, and a host of other issues.
But negotiations have bogged down amid wide differences on major issues including fishing rights and competition. Even with a deal, the UK faces new barriers to business with the EU. Without one, it faces an abrupt, disruptive departure that would hammer many businesses, and with the UK economy already hammered by COVID-19.
One major change will be the end of Britons’ freedom to live and work anywhere in the EU, and of Europeans’ right to settle in the UK.
More than 3 million EU citizens currently living in the UK are entitled to stay. But from Jan. 1, 2021, new immigration rules will apply to EU and non-EU citizens alike.
Britain is introducing a “points-based” immigration system that will assess prospective immigrants on criteria including English-language ability, having a job offer from an approved employer, and meeting a minimum salary threshold.
The system is designed to cut the number of low-skilled migrants entering Britain from the beginning of next year but also aims to make it easier for higher-skilled workers to get UK visas.
Johnson said it would be “a humane and sensible system” that allows the UK to attract the best talent from around the globe.
“Although of course we are going to be taking back control and we are controlling our immigration system we’re not going to be simply slamming the gates and stopping anybody anywhere coming into this country,” he said.
Home Secretary Priti Patel announced new details of the system on July 13, including a special fast-track visa for health care workers.
Hundreds of thousands of people who work in Britain’s publicly funded National Health Service come from abroad, and many in the sector fear post-Brexit staff shortages.
The government said social care workers will not be eligible for a special health care visa. Johnson’s spokesman, James Slack, said “immigration is not the sole answer here” and that care homes should “invest more in training and development” to recruit more staff.
Martin Green, chief executive of Care England, accused the government of treating social care workers “as second-class citizens.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a member of the main opposition Labour Party, accused the government of “pulling up the drawbridge to much of the talent we continue to need as a city and a country.”
“Rushing through these proposals during the middle of a global pandemic is particularly irresponsible,” he said.
The new border rules announced on July 13 don’t apply to trade between the EU and Northern Ireland, the only part of the UK that shares a land border with the bloc. Britain and the EU have agreed that Northern Ireland’s currently invisible border with the Republic of Ireland must be kept free of customs posts and other obstacles to the movement of people and goods to maintain peace on the Emerald Isle.
The UK has promised to set out exactly how it will do that later this month.

Should I Stay or Should I Go? An Opinionated Guide to Changing Edtech Industry Conferences
ASU GSV. SIIA. SXSW EDU.
No, these are not scattered arrangements of alphabet blocks from an especially precocious early learning classroom. They’re abbreviations for major conferences for companies in the education industry.
I’ve been attending, and occasionally speaking at, these events and their predecessors for more than two decades. What sets them apart from purely teacher-focused conferences is that industry players aren’t viewed mainly as vendors who pony up for a sponsorship or exhibit booth. Instead, in nearly every case, they’re primary conference attendees.
The last time I took a detailed look at the industry conference landscape for EdSurge was in 2014. That was early in the days of low-cost cloud computing enabling a multitude of new edtech startups, really fast internet beginning its spread to schools, and Chromebooks starting their climb to ascendance in U.S. K-12 classrooms as a 1:1 mobile device.
Five years later, these developments didn’t just upend the classroom. They have upended the industry and how it’s reflected in the events that cater to industry companies, investors, and executives at every level from preschool to workforce learning.
For more education technology events, check out our 2019 calendars:
U.S. K-12 Events
U.S. Higher-Ed Events
International Events
If you work inside, or are deeply interested in, the industry, here’s a new assessment of a handful of the most prominent U.S. events. Yes, ISTE, EDUCAUSE, CoSN and other educator-focused conferences remain vitally important to the industry, too, and have gone through some of their own changes (for example, the “F” in FETC no longer means “Florida” but “Future of” Education Technology Conference). There are also other highly specialized and invitation-only industry conferences. But the general, high-profile events that follow are where more industry deals are done and difficult business decisions are discussed.
Here’s how the alphabet blocks are currently stacked: who’s on top, who’s fallen off the pile, and why you might want to play. Or at least go to watch the players.
ASU GSV Summit
If there was any doubt, this year’s event put it to rest: ASU GSV Summit is the must-attend conference for education technology investment, with business deals and policy issues buttressing the financial focus. Held in early April, ASU GSV’s 10th annual event in 2019 drew an estimated 4,900 people to San Diego with celebrity and political headliners providing a star-studded umbrella under which rainmakers prospered.
Its growth has been stunning. From 240 attendees a decade ago when first held by Arizona State University and the investment firm GSV (Global Silicon Valley) Advisors, ASU GSV Summit blew past the 2,000 attendees figure in 2014, outgrew its Scottsdale home, and now is bursting at the seams in San Diego. The event tweeted that it was “sold out” a week before it began this year and started a waiting list. And it’s not exactly the lowest-priced conference option: Last-minute walk up registration was a few bucks under $3,200.
Even if you didn’t attend keynotes featuring Tony Blair, Common, and—yes—Sesame Street, the programming provided measured insights on the state of the industry, ranging from “preK to Gray.” Everyone from large company CEOs and major investors to startups and nonprofit institutions attend. I found that if you simply stood in a hallway, it was virtually impossible to not see someone you knew (or wanted to know) pass by within five minutes. It’s sessile serendipity.
Deborah Quazzo, co-founder and managing partner of the Summit and managing partner of the GSV AcceleraTE Fund, credits much of the event’s popularity to how it covers learning at every level, from early childhood up. “I do think the overall market has moved to a position of seeing the critical integration of education and talent/workforce innovation,” Quazzo said. “I believe ASU GSV was ahead of the curve on that position and we are thrilled with its embrace.”
Draw: Raw financial horsepower and speaker star power.
Difference: GSV’s deep understanding of the financial end of “preK-Gray” learning.
Go: If you want to do a deal, raise money, or simply understand the current investment-and-education landscape, this is the one conference to attend.
Next: ASU GSV Summit, San Diego, March 30 - April 1, 2020.
SXSW EDU
As part of a 30 year history of SXSW conferences, SXSW EDU is one of the younger siblings in the South by Southwest family. But it’s grown from its birth in 2011, and gotten a little, well, more festive, as befits its family ties.
Like longer-running SXSW conferences and festivals, SXSW EDU’s home is Austin, Texas and it’s held in March. It precedes the more famous interactive and music events and is a bit more sane, at least in terms of size and late-night public behavior. (In the past, the city didn’t start shrink-wrapping parking meters and telephone poles to protect them until EDU was well underway.)
When you make plans to attend education technology industry events, remember that the conferences themselves can change as much as the industry does.
Yet SXSW EDU has tilted more toward a global teaching and learning festival as it has grown, even though it still attracts a healthy number of industry and government attendees from K-12 up through higher ed: about half educators, based on a breakdown of 2018 stats, and a third business and industry. In 2019, there were 8,300 registered for the conference, slightly up from 2018 but significantly up from the 6,000 who attended in 2014.
As EDU has aligned itself more closely with other South-by events over the past few years, conference keynotes, panels and workshops have been joined by new programming such as a hands-on Playground, and a free one-day education expo that’s open to the public and adds thousands more beyond the conference total.
For the industry, it’s less a setting for business and more to see what educators are excited about without the us-them distinctions of an exhibit hall, mingling in an atmosphere that encourages different types of attendees to mix. Much networking gets done at the many meetups, receptions, and parties.
“SXSW EDU’s mission is to advance teaching and learning and we work to assemble as broad an array of stakeholders as possible, believing the more diverse the community the more impactful the conversations,” said Ron Reed, SXSW EDU’s founder and executive producer, and director of emerging events for South by Southwest. When EDU was launched, Reed told me, it was one of the few education events not tied to a specific association or membership group. He sees the event landscape continuing to evolve. “We believe it is a reflection of education becoming an increasingly interdisciplinary conversation,” he said.
Draw: Festival! And the SXSW reputation for informative and interesting events.
Difference: Educators, industry, entrepreneurs, nonprofits and wonks attend as equals in large number.
Go: To see what’s exciting educators without the restrictions of an exhibit hall, or feeling as though industry types are intruding into a sacred educator-reserved space.
Next: SXSW EDU, Austin, March 9-12, 2020.
SIIA Ed Tech Industry Conference
If anyone is playing the long game in edtech industry conferences, it’s the Software and Information Industry Association. The SIIA Ed Tech Industry Conference may be part of a larger “code and content” trade association, but it’s an organization in which the education division—technically, its Education Technology Industry Network—has traditionally been very strong.
SIIA’s long-running annual conference was once the only industry education conference with a technology emphasis. It’s undergone a few modest identity changes. The last time I wrote about it, the name had changed to “Education Industry Summit” from “Ed Tech Industry Summit.” But it’s generally been held in San Francisco, most recently every June. Attendance numbers more in the hundreds than the thousands, owing to SIIA’s tight focus on edtech industry companies.
What’s remained consistent—and is being emphasized even more this year—is that SIIA is a place where the industry, from K-12 through higher education, discusses the hard issues of building and maintaining an education technology business. It also has an established innovation showcase for startups, popular one-to-one business connection meetings, and the annual education CODiE Awards which are now in their 34th year.
Jill Abbott, the new senior vice president and managing director for SIIA’s ETIN, says she’s seen “a larger focus on start-ups in the event landscape” over the past five years, as well as a more thoughtful approach to programming. “Questions such as, ‘What are the educational trends?’ (and) ‘How can we help companies evolve their business model?’ are now being addressed,” she said.
As to where SIIA fits in, Abbott said: “SIIA views its role to focus on essential problems or questions that we need to address as an industry.” That includes making sure there’s a “call to action” in its conference programming, beyond exchanging ideas and networking. “Providing a call to action—whether it’s for diversity, equity, and inclusion, new marketing approaches, or how AI is impacting your business—brings the conversation outside of the event and into the organization,” she said.
Draw: Peer-to-peer conversations about the business of edtech, plus the CODiE Awards celebration marking the edtech industry’s highest honors.
Difference: Long-standing association event with a tight focus on industry and company needs.
Go: To discuss hard business issues, learn from what other companies have done, and connect.
Next: SIIA Ed Tech Industry Conference and CODiE Awards, San Francisco, June 10-12, 2019.
EdNET, Content in Context and others
No industry-focused conference I highlighted five years ago survived completely unchanged. Some didn’t survive at all.
In 2014, Content in Context was a thriving conference for educational content publishers going digital, drawing hundreds to D.C. each June. Formerly called the Association of Education Publishers (AEP) Summit, the event name changed to CiC and AEP was acquired by the Association of American Publishers. But its 2017 event, after a move to Philadelphia, was CiC’s last gasp.
I reached out to an AAP spokesperson who said the organization had recently hired a new leader for education, and anticipates future events that might be open to members and nonmembers alike.
Aging was somewhat kinder to EdNET: at least the event name survived. But both emphasis and length morphed. What had been the longest-running and broadest-based standalone K-12 industry conference—a fixture for three days each September that drew hundreds—also wrapped up in 2017. MDR, the marketing data and services company which ran it, moved to a new format in 2018. EdNET now is a set of three, smaller one-day regional events across the country, with a more narrow education marketing focus and fewer than 100 attendees each.
That cellular division and regeneration appears to have worked for MDR. Kristina James, whos responsible for the EdNET events, said two of its three 2018 events had waitlists. Part of that success, she said, was in “minimizing the time and financial commitment necessary to attend and presenting content that was localized for attendees.” This year, EdNET plans to host similar one-day events in Boston, New York City and San Diego.
Industry reflected in a not-so-funhouse mirror
So you may now be thinking: What was it about 2017?
Here’s where it becomes clearer that the traditional edtech industry reached a Titanic tipping point of sorts: maybe not exactly in 2017 when certain high-profile events ended, but during the past five years. The conferences reflect that upending in three different ways (and it’s not simply that ASU GSV has sucked all the money people out of the industry conference room).
Consolidation. Not only is “edtech” no longer separate from “education,” but K-12, higher education, and workforce learning are less distinct and moving to more of a seamless continuum. (I keep returning to Deborah Quazzo’s delightful term “preK-Gray.”) Some individual industry-focused conferences may no longer make sense when companies are trying to cross boundaries and business models.
Delivery. The double-edged sword of better internet bandwidth enabling more education technology uptake is that people can now get the equivalent of live conference panels and keynotes in high-def, streamed remotely and sometimes in real time. As MDR’s Kristina James noted, “The education industry event landscape has really evolved over the past few years with more people connecting via webinars.” So the better conferences are evolving: fewer rote presentations and more face-to-face time, rapid-fire discussions, and unique experiences.
Generations. As an Exec of a Certain Age, this might ring more true to me than to others. But many startups that have flooded the industry over the past few years may prefer real-time remote over in-person interaction. That means attending fewer events, while making sure the ones they do attend have the most bang for the buck. In addition, the driving forces behind the longest-running edtech industry events are getting older; the analysts and organizers that put on the original-format EdNET for many years, for example, have retired. Newer blood has new approaches.
When you make plans to attend education technology industry events, remember that the conferences themselves can change as much as the industry does. As they say in the finance world—and perhaps more frequently at ASU GSV—past performance is no guarantee of future results. Or of edtech success.

Egon Zehnder Global Board Diversity Tracker Suggests Gender Parity in the Boardroom May Never Be Achieved
LONDON & NEW YORK & ZURICH — Egon Zehnder, the world’s leadership advisory firm, today released the results of its 2018 Global Board Diversity Tracker. The study shows the accelerating growth seen in female directors in Western Europe is now levelling off, and growth elsewhere remains sluggish, suggesting gender parity on boards may never be reached at the current pace.
The research, examining data from 1610 public companies with market caps above €7bn in 44 different countries, shows that despite the slow improvement in the number of women on boards, nearly three quarters of all new board positions worldwide still go to men.
Jill Ader, Chairwoman of Egon Zehnder, said: “We need diversity, but it’s simply not happening fast enough. New voices and perspectives are essential to unlock the transformational capabilities that businesses tell us they need. Companies – starting from the very top – have to recognize the impact that a critical mass of women on the board and the executive committee makes and take the steps needed to bring that about.”
Key findings
The biennial study finds that both female and international representation on boards has improved significantly since Egon Zehnder started tracking board diversity in 2004.
But for boardrooms to truly reflect society, a new approach is needed. Egon Zehnder calls on businesses to apply the “magic of three” rule. Appointing one woman to the board is not sufficient. In order to reap the benefits of gender diversity, at least three women are needed to change the way the board is run and the way women are able to share their insights.
The importance of making diversity part of a company’s strategy was underlined by the business leaders Egon Zehnder spoke to as part of the study. Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, shared: “I would have a hard time even understanding how you can be successful as a business if you cannot mirror the society that you serve in the first place” and that driving diversity “really has to be done with conviction by the CEO of that company.”
The number of women on boards continues to increase, but is losing momentum:
20.4% of board seats of the largest companies globally are held by women, up from 18.5% in 2016. France is the global leader, with 42% female board members, versus less than 6% in Hungary, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the UAE.
In 2018, new board appointments made up 11.4% of all board positions globally, of which 27.0% were women, an improvement on the figure from the last report of 24.1%. This means that just 3.1% of all board positions are held by new female board members.
However, appointments of female directors to boards varies heavily by region. Of new board appointments in 2018, 35% were women in Australasia, Western Europe, the US and Canada, against 16.7% in South America and 12.5% in Asia. In the US the overall percentage of female directors has risen by just 3.2% since 2012.
While there has been significant progress in recent years, many companies are far from the “magic number” of three female directors:
In 19 of the 44 countries studied, all of the major large cap companies have at least one female director—up from 15 countries in 2016, and just 8 in 2012.
Yet in only 13 of 44 countries do the largest companies average three or more women per board, with five countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden and Italy) averaging four or more. All of these countries except for Sweden operate under some form of quota system. Western Europe is leading the way with an average of 3.8 women per board, followed by Australia/New Zealand with 2.7, and North America third with 2.5.
Despite growing representation in the boardroom, the number of female executives and especially CEOs remains stubbornly low:
Women make up just 3.7% of worldwide CEO positions, and that number has not changed over the past two years.
Only 5.6% of executive board positions are held by women
In 23 countries – including Norway, Germany and Canada that lead on other diversity metrics – there are NO female CEOs in the large set of companies studied.
Action Plan
Egon Zehnder believes the approach of business must change if we are to make real progress on gender diversity:
Pick for Potential – our work with businesses has found that certain personal traits are better indicators of success than a lengthy CV
Make Leadership Accountable – a focus on diversity has to be a core part of a company’s strategy, and an explicit goal set by senior leaders and directors
Raise Your Ambitions: Focus on Three – until a board achieves the critical mass of three women, little is likely to change. Directors must be proactive in spotting female talent, and consider board term limits or more active turnover
Train the Board for Success – chairs and directors must prepare the board for the fact that diversity of perspectives and opinions could make doing the work of the board less efficient, but more effective
The report’s full recommendations and findings can be explored and visualized using Egon Zehnder’s interactive tools at www.egonzehnder.com/global-board-diversity-tracker

Before And After Videos - Swim Smooth Stroke Correction In Action
Shauqie On the blog this week we're featuring four "before and after" videos of swimmers from our Swim Smooth coaches around the world. Check them out below - do you recognise yourself in any of them? Some of the stroke corrections are truly transformative to the overall stroke, whilst others are smaller tweaks bringing important gains. Like any swimmer, their stroke technique isn't yet "perfect" or "finished" but the common theme in all the changes is moving forwards with measurable improvements to their stroke mechanics and performance. Each of these changes was achieved following one-to-one Swim Smooth Video Analysis and Stroke Correction, an incredibly powerful way to improve your swimming. Swimmer Goh - SS Coach Shauqie Aziz - Swim Smooth Kuala  Lumpur

Shauqie: As you can see above, in the original footage of Goh (top) taken back in 2016 he was barely able to swim 100m, his stroke containing a dominant stop-start action. Over the last two years we have worked on several key drill sequences to improve his stroke. The most significant one has been to remove the deadspot at the front of the stroke where the two hands meet (or "catch up") at the front and there is a lack of continuous propulsion. This is like driving in gear 1 or 2 and never being able to go to gear 3 or 4. To correct this we worked on a drill sequence including Doggy Paddle and Unco drill to have continuous propulsion. Over time we also used a Tempo Trainer Pro to work on his stroke rhythm, which has now lifted from 44 Strokes Per Minute to 64. The result is that Goh is now swimming very effectively with a CSS pace around 1:56/100m. Goh: I am very fortunate to have met Coach Shauqie on my swimming journey, compared to those typical swim coach who only yelled at their student (which I saw at some pool). Shauqie is a very passionate coach where he would explain the reason behind every drill, how all the mistakes you made slow you down. Being an engineer, I really enjoy how he fed me this information and I learnt a lot regarding stroke correction from him over the past 2 years. Head position, split view, imaginary rope, bend elbow and body rotation - these are the things I keep telling myself during every swim sessions. I studied all the video from Swim Smooth Guru, I could watch those elites swim video over and over and over again. Eagerness to improve and a good coach is all you need, yesterday has already passed, but if you start today, you will reach there 1 day earlier than if you start tomorrow! Swimmer Simon - SS Coach Merle Talviste - Swim Smooth Singapore
Simon before (top) and after (bottom)
Merle - I met Simon in January 2017 when he was looking how to get faster in his iron distance triathlon racing. Simon had been swimming around 10 years always swimming 'mid pack' compared to his great cycling and running, around 65min per for a non wetsuit 3.8km swim. From the video analysis session we identified several key areas that needed focus common with Smooths who have gone towards lengthening their stroke too much: - Bilateral breathing and the benefits for his rotation, improving open water swimming adaption - Fine tuning body alignment and hand entry, with focus his on turned out hands after 'spearing in’ that impacted the early catch set up. - Removing the long glide at the front of his stroke that was making his tall body sink, which encouraged kickstart leg kick and straight arm pull through. The emphasis was on feel of the water, effective catch on the front and good rhythm for the stroke. In addition to the technique work identified in the video analysis, we got him started on a CSS based training program to improve his swim endurance and pacing skills. We started off with the pace around 1:40 /100m and managed to get that down to 1.28 /100m within 4 months. What a great dedicated athlete to work with! Swimmer Mark - SS Coach Seamus Bennett - Swim Smooth Suffolk, UK
Mark before (left) and after (right)
Seamus: Mark is a top cyclist and very decent runner with, previously, no love or feel for swimming - it was always the part he just ‘had to go through’ in triathlon. After video analysis with me in May and October 2017, and now over a year in the squad, it’s true to say that Mark loves his swimming and with his CSS times falling from 1:50+ /100m to below 1:40, he’s now one of the first out of the water (and one of the most often seen swimming in the sea this summer for the sheer enjoyment!) The most visible and significant thing we sorted in Mark’s stroke was getting rid of his dropped-elbow overglide. In the ‘before’ footage the fingers of his right hand reach so far upward that they actually break the surface as we see his palm facing forwards, stalling him and holding him back.  Unsurprisingly he also had a serious scissor kick at the stage. In the ‘after’ clip, notice how Mark is much quicker into his catch, with the elbow staying higher. His scissor kick has reduced and his speed has improved by around 7 seconds /100m. To make Mark into a much more effective swimmer, especially for open water, he has worked hard on Scull #1 and Doggy Paddle drills, as well as a number of side-kicking drills with fins, which have had the double effect of reducing his crossover and scissor kick, and training his lead arm not to drop the elbow. Swimmer Jill - SS Coach Morgan Williams - Swim Smooth Yorkshire, UK
Morgan: I met Jill for the first time on Tuesday, yep that’s 31st of July 2018. She explained she has been participating in triathlons and is largely self taught on the freestyle stroke from what she had read and viewed online. Her big aim was that she wanted to “feel like a swimmer” and feel that she could improve. I certainly got the impression during our pre-video Analysis chat that she wasn't convinced she could.  As you’ll see from the shot on the left Jill was just breathing to her right and over rotating whilst doing so which also led to a very noticeable scissor kick. Her left arm was recovering very low across the water due to very little rotation to the left. This meant her entry was very efficient and resulted in he left arm collapsing away with very little traction or control. That said as someone who was largely self taught I was impressed that Jill had got herself to a point where she could comfortably cover her race distance.  So it was time for a tune up! Jill was quick to point out that she lacked flexibility in her shoulders so the first step was to adjust the hand entry and set up at the front of her stroke to allow for this. This immediately freed things up for Jill and she started to tell more relaxed and in control. The next step was to tune up Jill’s catch and pull to deliver more traction and propulsion in the early phase of her stroke. Using a combination of drills from the Swim Smooth toolbox she very quickly saw the return. This combined with my favourite visualisation of “climbing an imaginary ladder” (yes we do psychology in our coaching too) Jill made a significant improvement in just 90 minutes, So much so I grabbed my iPhone and grabbed the footage on the right!  The day after Jill emailed some very positive feedback!  Hi Morgan, I really enjoyed the session yesterday and went swimming today to try and make sure I was remembering what to do whilst it was fresh in my mind. I was pretty chuffed as my times were around 2 seconds a length faster but I seemed to be finding it easier too! I think being able to take a copy of the lesson home was really good, and for me, seeing that I actually was starting to look like a swimmer rather than a lopsided jelly fish was really helpful and has made me actually believe that I can improve. Thanks lots. Jill Find our more about Morgan and his coaching in Yorkshire at: www.myevolve.org
Swimmer "Mega" Megan - SS Head Coach Paul Newsome - Swim Smooth Perth, Australia And last but not least, don't miss our classic before and after of "Mega" Megan published on the blog here in 2014: www.feelforthewater.com/2014/05/mega-megan-going-from-212-to-132-100m.html Megan has made HUGE improvements to her swimming speed, taking over 40 seconds per 100m off her CSS pace!
Meet Megan - she looks innocent enough doesn't she?
As we said at the time: Megan has developed a great little stroke packed with punch and rhythm. She's developed a good feel for the water despite not having any swimming background. She's determined, she's persistent and she's swim fit. And the really scary thing (for our top lane) is that she's still improving! Check out her before and after footage from the link above.
