Timothy Olyphant, 55, is an actor who starred in Deadwood, Live Free or Die Hard, and Justified. He will star in the FX miniseries Justified: City Primeval this fall and currently co-stars in the Max miniseries Full Circle. He spoke with Marc Myers before the actors strike.

TIMOTHY:

You couldn’t get me out of the pool when I was a kid. We lived next door to a swim and racket club in Modesto, Calif.

I began regular swim practice at age 6. My older brother, Andy, took to tennis, which probably helped us get along. We were competitive. Our younger brother, Matt, did a little bit of everything and eventually became a water-polo player.

I was born in Hawaii, but we moved to Modesto when I was 3. My dad, Bevan, worked for Del Monte and left to work at E&J Gallo Winery soon after we relocated to California. He started in bottling and worked his way up to vice president of production.

My mom, Katherine, was a full-time mom. She was the nurturing type. Whether I won or lost, she’d always talk about how well I competed or how beautiful a swimmer I was, never about whether I won or not. She’s very sweet and encouraging.

Just as I was starting high school, my parents divorced. After they split up, we quickly figured out who was responsible for what. For example, our dad didn’t really know how to do laundry or cook. If we were going over to his place, we’d probably be eating out.

When you’re young, any time your foundation gets rocked, it sets you back a bit. I’d been a good student when my parents were together, but there definitely was a dip after the divorce. I kind of saw what I could get away with and wound up just an okay student.

I wasn’t in school plays. I’m not sure I saw that side of me yet. Instead, I was at swim practice and hanging with my buddies. I also liked to draw a lot, which I suppose is how I expressed myself.

I was a solid swimmer in the Central Valley. I set a CIF SAC-Joaquin Section Record and wound up with an All America Swimming Certificate. By my senior year, I realized swimming was my ticket out of town and certainly the only way I’d get into a great university.

I worked hard. After USC saw the times I was posting, they called to recruit me for the team. When I flew out to USC on my recruit trip, I met with the dean of the architecture school. He said there was no way I could manage both the swim team’s practice schedule and the rigors of the architectural program.

I asked him about the art gallery downstairs. He said it was part of the fine-arts department. I didn’t even know you could get a degree in that. I met with the fine-arts dean and asked if I could be on the swim team. He said we’d work it out.

Majoring in fine arts for me was like winning the lottery. In high school, I’d get in trouble for drawing when I was supposed to be doing schoolwork. Now, in college, drawing was my schoolwork.

After my senior year, I left USC several electives shy of a degree and didn’t finish until the pandemic. But before I left, I met some drama majors who got me thinking about acting.

By then, my college girlfriend, Alexis, and I had married. We moved to Seal Beach, south of Los Angeles, where I coached swimming. To fulfill some of my electives I took an acting 101 class at UC Irvine. I had a ball. It was a language I understood immediately.

I read Stanislavsky’s and Sandy Meisner’s books on acting. I realized that it wasn’t a frivolous pursuit but a craft on par with how artists I admired approached painting and sculpture. I told Alexis I was thinking about pursuing acting rather than a master’s in fine art. She said, “Tim, just do something. Just pick one thing and do that.”

The guy who taught the intro class was a graduate student who recommended I study with Bill Esper at the Esper Studio in New York. Fortunately, Alexis’s dad lived there and let us move into his place.

My career has been many little steps—a lot of one step forward, two steps back. I’m not sure if there was any one role that really changed things, but landing the lead in “Justified,” in 2010, certainly helped things along.

Today, Alexis and I live in Los Angeles and have three grown kids. We moved in 15 years ago and love the house and neighborhood. I still draw and swim.

Breakfast is my favorite meal. I make steel-cut oatmeal in my rice cooker, which has a porridge setting. When I come home from swimming and have my oatmeal, I feel like I’m 8 again. And you know what? That feels pretty good.

Análise Crítica - Os primeiros minutos de Coringa

“Joker” dir. Todd Philips

O crucial para a análise desses minutos de “Coringa” é primeiro entender que, no cinema, nada que é colocado em uma cena é por acaso, cada pequeno detalhe compõe uma grande parte da representação que o artista busca passar ali. E logo na primeira cena, temos um exemplo disso, quando algo que parece ser do “pano de fundo” mostra ter uma grande importância para a narrativa, que é o som de fundo que toca no rádio enquanto a cena acontece com o personagem em primeiro plano, o rádio nem está aparentemente na tela, mas o som dele se propaga pelo local, transmitindo as notícias da cidade, notícias as quais são de como o mundo está se resumindo em lixo e coisas sujas, ao mesmo tempo que ocorre a apresentação do personagem principal, que está montando a persona do palhaço a qual, em poucos segundos revela ser uma persona bem fingida, pois ele se mostra alguém triste por trás da máscara do personagem alegre.

Na cena seguinte, o filme ambientaliza o meio de trabalho desse personagem, que é interrompido por alguns meninos que tiraram a placa de sua mão, e ali começa uma perseguição apresentando a cidade, a qual parece ter muita importância pela forma como ela é representada, por exemplo, no momento em que o Coringa está caído no chão, após ter sido espancado pelos menores, o homem se encontra em um beco rodeado de lixo e sujeira, como se ele fizesse parte daquele monte de lixo que foi mencionado antes no rádio. A escolha das cores é muito estratégica também para impressionar os olhos do espectador, com o único contraste de cor sendo dos tons de amarelo na placa e na roupa do personagem, enquanto em volta dele tudo está em tons frios e escuros.  O figurino tem grande influência no decorrer do filme, e nessa cena em específico, quando ele está agonizando de dor no chão e ele mesmo não consegue expressar sua tristeza, mas ela é transmitida através da flor que “chora”. A flor de palhaço em sua roupa vaza um pouco de água, como se fosse parte de seu corpo e estivesse chorando.

Em seguida, o personagem está em um escritório pequeno e apertado, cheio de coisas entulhadas e uma janela com uma proteção. As cores, mais uma vez, nos levam ao melancólico, onde em volta dele o ambiente tem cores escuras e frias, e seu figurino contrasta puxando para cores quentes. O diretor escolhe apresentar a situação por partes, dando um suspense ao que realmente está acontecendo, começando por um primeiríssimo plano da impecável atuação de Joaquin Phoenix dando uma gargalhada, porém, a sua expressão facial é de tristeza, o que indica que ele provavelmente não estava rindo de felicidade ou de achar algo engraçado. Do plano fechado no rosto dele, passa para um plano médio mostrando o ambiente onde ele está, o que confirma que ele não está rindo de algo, pois nada está acontecendo, e logo depois passa para a reação da pessoa a sua frente, que também não está rindo e se mostra preocupada com a situação a sua frente, ela está usado um crachá de departamento de saúde do estado, o que indica que ela está cuidando de algo nessa pessoa. Chegando ao ponto que todos estão se perguntando: o que tem de errado com ele?

Corta para uma clássica cena melancólica onde a personagem está olhando pela janela de algum meio transporte com o vidro molhado da chuva, o que explicita o fato de termos sempre lembretes de que a vida deste personagem é uma vida triste. Nesta cena somos apresentados à uma inocente interação de Arthur/Joker com uma criança. Na qual ele faz algumas caras e bocas, depois de a criança o ver triste. E em poucos segundo essa inocência é cortada dele, quando a mãe da criança o acusa de estar incomodando seu filho. Neste momento é apresentada uma parte muito importante para a construção desse personagem, que responde a pergunta que havia surgido na cena anterior. É o momento em que ele revela que vive com uma doença.

Estes primeiros 9 minutos são basicamente, a melhor maneira possível de apresentar um personagem nessas circunstâncias. Utilizando todas as sutilezas da arte do cinema para a representação de um personagem tão icônico como o Coringa.

Remembering Monte Melkonian

National Hero of Armenia Monte Melkonian was killed 28 years ago today.

Monte was a thinker and a writer, as well as a man of deeds. He was not afraid to speak the truth as he saw it.

Throughout his lifetime he struggled for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the protection of the rights of Armenians.

Monte Melkonian was born in California’s San Joaquin Valley on November 25, 1957. A trained archaeologist who spoke eight languages, he spent his entire adult life working for justice and defending Armenians in Iran, Lebanon, and Armenia.

Melkonian was known as Avo to the troops under his command in Nagorno-Karabakh. The last years of his life were spent fighting with the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army.

He believed that the the only real future for Artsakh would be to unite with Armenia. His messages about the importance of Artsakh for Armenia resonate over time.

Monte was killed in the village of Merzili, Aghdam (Akna) in the early afternoon of June 12, 1993.

After death he was awarded the highest military honors of Nagorno Karabakh and the Republic of Armenia, including the Military Cross, First Degree and the Golden Eagle medal.

But this isn’t the first time El Chapo, leader of the Sinaloa cartel, has been on the lam. The drug kingpin has a long history of capture, escape and recapture.

Jan. 19, 2001: With the help of bribed guards, Guzman escapes from his top-security prison. Saviano describes the escape: “One of them—Francisco Camberos Rivera, known as El Chito, or the Silent One—opened the door to El Chapo’s cell and helped him climb into a cart of dirty laundry. They headed down unguarded hallways and through wide-open electronic doors to the inner parking lot, where only one guard was on duty. El Chapo jumped out of the cart and leaped into the trunk of a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.”

Feb. 22, 2014: El Chapo is captured in Mazatlan after hiding in tunnels for days. The success was touted as a huge win for authorities, who by then had deemed Guzman the “most powerful drug trafficker in the world.”

July 11, 2015: Guzman escapes through a tunnel from Mexico’s top-security prison. You can see the path he took to escape here.

Jan. 8, 2016: He is once again re-captured in Los Mochis, Sinaloa after a shootout with Mexican marines. Five people were killed and one marine was wounded in the fight.

Culmina “6ª edición del Festival Internacional de Artes Escénicas Querétaro”

La Secretaría de Cultura del estado de Querétaro da a conocer que la sexta edición del Festival Internacional de Artes Escénicas Querétaro, tuvo la respuesta de 376 mil 420 personas que lograron disfrutar las 118 actividades programadas, 59 actividades de manera presencial y 59 virtuales a través de las redes de la Secult (@Secultqro)

Los eventos que se vivieron de manera presencial contaron con la asistencia de 5 mil 952 personas, quienes atendieron las recomendaciones y los protocolos que marcan las medidas sanitarias en cada una de las 19 sedes como el Auditorio, Quirófano, Foro al Aire Libre y Estacionamiento del CEART; Auditorio y Teatrino del Museo de la Ciudad; Casa del Faldón, Centro de Arte Emergente, Estadio Olímpico, Teatro de la Ciudad, NUQLEO, Auditorio Crescenciano Méndez Barajas “Casa del Huapango” (San Joaquin).

Mientras que los espacios privados fueron la Casa Atma, El Forito $3 Pesos, Teatro Sol y Luna, La Gaviota Teatro, El Mesón de Cómicos de la Legua, Centro Cultural La Pirámide y CENADAC, respectivamente. En el espectáculo inaugural se disfrutó de la ópera “La Serva Padrona”, del compositor italiano Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, interpretado por la soprano Zaira Soria, el barítono Carlos Sánchez, Franco Vega, bajo la dirección de Rodrigo Sierra, Sergio Vázquez al piano, y la Orquesta Filarmónica de Querétaro con el Ensamble Barroco.

También se disfrutaron de manera presencial  extraordinarias exhibiciones en el Nuevo Estadio Olímpico de Querétaro por parte del Ballet Folclórico Maya que presentó "Fandango Queretano", y la soprano Neivi Martínez en compañía de la Banda de Música del Estado de Querétaro con la presentación "Ésta es mi tierra", que logró realizar con todos sus integrantes para deleite del público asistente que pudo gozar del talento de estos artistas, quienes ofrecieron diversos números musicales y dancísticos, ensalzando el folclor característico de nuestra región.

En esta sexta edición, realizada del 8 al 15 de julio, se contó con la participación de mil 242 artistas, y la colaboración espacios culturales de los municipios de Colón (Casa de Cultura), Ezequiel Montes (Museo de la Máscara en Bernal), Jalpan de Serra (Museo Histórico de la Sierra Gorda), Pedro Escobedo (Casa de Cultura), San Joaquín (Casa de Cultura), Tequisquiapan (Casa de Cultura) y Tolimán (Casa de Cultura).

De las actividades programadas se realizaron: 29 actividades presenciales de Teatro y 21 virtuales; 14 actividades presenciales de danza y 16 virtuales; seis actividades musicales presenciales y seis virtuales; tres actos circenses presenciales y tres de forma virtual; dos ciclos de cine; ocho ciclos académicos; y cuatro actividades multidisciplinarias. Se contó con la participación de agrupaciones de Italia, Argentina, Canadá, Japón, Indonesia y España; y artistas de los estados de Guanajuato, del Estado de México (Toluca) y de la Ciudad de México con un total de 111 artistas.
