Mondays are tough, job hunting is a jungle but there is light around you
When you are unemployed and looking for a job, Mondays hit you harder. You were more relaxed over the weekend. They can't send you rejection emails over the weekend, and sending applications doesn't make much sense. However, on Monday, you have to get back into the circus, and with each passing week, you feel more and more nauseated.
It had been years since I last faced the job search world, and I wasn't prepared for this storm of information that hits you. Everyone gives advice, often contradicting each other, and you don't know which way to turn. It feels like no matter what you do, you'll do it wrong.
So you start to think it's your fault. Something is wrong with your CV, your profile, the cover letter you wrote, your name, your date of birth… you are wrong!
Looking for a job is one of the most dehumanizing processes I have ever faced. I'm not talking about the interviews, that's different, even though in the end, it's also a dance about who has prepared the best script, but rather the application and the rejection.
Due to these discouraging circumstances, I cried for three days in a row last week. Then I decided to do the right thing. Besides booking an appointment with a psychologist for this week, because I need all the mental support I can get, I visited a dear friend to cry a bit with her too.
And here, my wise friend helped me put things into perspective and gave me confidence. For this reason, I want to share with you some of the things that helped me the most:
Often, HR or those posting job ads have no idea what they want or what they're looking for. She experienced this firsthand at work; she was hired as an Art Director only to discover that even they had no idea what the role entailed. Similarly, when she was looking for a graphic designer, HR posted the job as Visual Designer, believing it would perform better on LinkedIn. Unfortunately, these are two different jobs, and she found herself having to reject numerous portfolios simply because they were Visual Designers, which paradoxically was what the ad asked for. A rejection can have a thousand reasons, some of which have nothing to do with your CV.
Go there and fail. Submit the application even if it's not a perfect match, go to the interview in Dutch even if you're not confident about your language level, it doesn't matter. Go and fail, failing doesn't mean being a failure, but gaining experience.
You don't know where your opportunity lies; hang in there, keep learning, and network as best as you can. All this anxiety and fear will dissolve one day when you finally see that job offer... that day will come!
It might take some time and its ok.
I am very lucky to be surrounded by people who believe in me and support me wholeheartedly. Whenever I ask them, whether it's my girlfriend or all my friends, the response is always: "You will find a job, we have no doubt."
Surround yourself with people who care about you and give you a lot of support, not with those who want to burden you with their worries or judgments (which is why I haven't told my parents).
It's a tough time, but I am truly blessed with my chosen family.

The Cautionary Parable of Mad Will
When William first spotted the ship in the distance, he’d thought nothing of it. In the years he’d been stranded on this small patch of sand and palm, nary a passing vessel had appeared along the endless, flat horizon of the surrounding sea. In his mind’s eye, however—caught in the grips of feverish mirage or saltwater hallucination—William had often spotted shimmering convoys of gold and silver glinting in the distance. His sun-bleached corneas presented him with the semblance of tiny oriental junks; of the grand warships of the Royal Navy; of talking nautical beasts, strapped with saddles and buoyant with promises of salvation. He had come not to waste his energy on such abundant untruths.
It was this learned propensity for disbelief that caused William to ignore the sight, wholly unconvinced at first of its objective corporeal certitude. But as its bow grew in size, he found himself unable to look away. When the ship appeared just some five hundred meters offshore, he felt an unusual needling in his gut, and his heart went aflutter. He ran to the jungle behind him and collected the oily fronds of what was known to him only as the “smoke bush,” a green succulent shrub that burned dark and long. William placed the branches on his small cooking fire, and the flames erupted into a high column of blackness above the island. Within minutes, the ship had come in and dropped anchor.
It was a small vessel, but sturdy, emblazoned on the side with its name: the HMS Port Folio. The sight made William well up with tears, but it looked almost too aligned with his longings and desires. He again found himself incredulous, and began searching for fault along its smooth contours. Could this be nothing more than the fever dream of a mad man? He felt compelled to learn more, and approached the ship with haste. The Captain waved to him over the starboard side as Will waded out to meet him.
“This is a fine vessel, sir!” shouted Will, voice gruff and grizzled from disuse. He smacked the ship’s hull. “A bit small, but it surely looks sturdy! Tell me, what kind of experiences have you had in this?”
“Many! I’ve had many adventures, stranger!” replied the Captain, from high above. “Come aboard and I will regale you with seafaring stories over a hearty meal of salt cod and Madeira!”
“I thank you, sir, but I would prefer to discuss it first!” said Will, cocking his neck to look up. “What is your name, Captain?”
“Scott XXXXXX, sir. At your service.”
“Good day to you, Captain Scott! My name is William! Where are you sailing from?”
“I hail from the fair port city of Bushwick!” said the Captain.
“Bushwick? I too am from there!” said Will.
“It’s as if the fates have entwined us, don’t you agree?”
“It does seem quite agreeable,” Will said, furrowing his brow. “Now, tell me, do you mind if I inquire as to what companies you’ve you set sail with in the past?”
“I do not mind at all! I’ve crewed with shipping concerns both large and small for the past five years! I’ve also taken to the sea on my own, and have had grand adventures through both avenues!” said the Captain.
“I see. Have you ever specifically sailed for a rescue agency, though?”
“I’ve never had the pleasure, but for no reason other than the opportunity has never presented itself! I consider myself a versatile seaman, and have made it my goal to acquire varied experiences! Rest assured, sir, that rescuing those in need is a passion of mine. I’m truly excited about the prospect of helping you return to your loved ones!”
“Interesting. Now, have you rescued anyone else recently?”
“Pardon?” asked the Captain, cocking an eyebrow.
“Have you rescued anyone else with this ship? Preferably someone I may know or have heard of!”
“Nay, sir,” shouted the Captain. “This will be my first. I can assure you, though, we are well equipped to handle you! I have made my way on the seas for some time now, and have all the knowledge necessary to help you! We have food and potable water for weeks, and plentiful limes to chase the scurvy from your gums!”
“So you have no direct experience with rescues. I see. Well, it was a pleasure making your acquaintance Captain, but I’m afraid I must pass.”
“This is a perplexing revelry!” said the Captain, laughing. “Surely, you jest! Can’t you see that my ship can provide you salvation, just the same as one that has sailed before with rescue agencies! Better even!”
“All the same,” said Will, “I shall hold out for a ship with a more storied history of rescuing stranded castaways! It’s nothing personal, I merely prefer it that way.”
And with that, the Captain hoisted his anchor and set forth into the inky waves, leaving William to his fate. He sailed on, and in the years hence, rescued many imperiled castaways scattered about the unforgiving seas. Each subsequent person he reunited with civilization cited the courteous and professional manner in which the Captain had handled himself, and often recommended him for missions of the ilk to friends and likeminded business partners. But the Captain always remembered the day he encountered the man who spurned relief from want in favor of waiting at the edge of that sandy shore. In all his days, he could never rid himself of the image of Mad Will, waving farewell as he vanished behind his ship on the h
