Great piece about my favorite Lou Reed solo album, Street Hassle, from vet rock writer and fine fella, Joe Bonomo, from his Substack, No Such Thing As Was.

I don't agree with every word of Bonomo's quick summation of the album -- I think every song is a memorable characteristic entity, moreso than any other Lou LP -- but Bonomo's piece is mostly about the record's centerpiece, the epic song, "Street Hassle."

The details about Bruce Springsteen's cameo are interesting; and I almost forgot that's Bruce yalping the "1-2-3-4!!" on the immortal Dictators' tune, "Faster and Louder." There’s also an interesting video interview included from the period with Lou and Flo & Eddie.

It also struck my sideways, as today is the late, great Alan Vega's birthday. I sang at a Suicide tribute show last Thursday at Bowery Electric in Manhattan (flyer below...), that was also the book release party for Infinite Dreams: The Life of Alan Vega, a new biography co-written by his wife Liz Lamere.

At Wednesday's practice session, I chatted with Mz. Lamere a little, and she told me about how gracious Springsteen was to write the forward for the book, and that he was always a big Suicide fan, which I'd heard before. She told me something I hadn't heard though -- or forgot becuse all these tales start filtering in and out of your noggin as dream-like things over time -- but anyway, it seems Alan was brought down to a Springsteen soundcheck a few years ago. Bruce jumped off the stage when Vega sauntered in, and they had a huge hug -- apparently they hadn't seen each other since the time Bruce was recording Nebraska in 1982, and Alan was recording down the hall in the same studio. It further enhanced the notions that Suicide's distant, shadowy, dark, midnight drive sound was a major influence on Nebraska.

Al hail to all these '70s masters who could hear the heat and heartbreak in doo-wop, the fate in The Big Beat, the gravel in a guitar, and the glory in making up crazy characters for all fans to ponder about over decades...

Margaret Quimby (1904–1965) was an American stage and film actress, who appeared in both lead and supporting roles during the silent and early sound era. She is best remembered for the (lost) serial Perils of the Wild (Francis Ford, 1925) with Joe Bonomo, and such films as The Western Whirlwind (1927) with Jack Hoxie and The Tired Business Man (1927) with Raymond Hitchcock.
