Oh, Sherrie. Our love...

Steve Perry - Street Talk (Columbia, 1984) - Photo by John Scarpati, art direction by Jim Welch, concept by Steve Perry
Steve Perry's solo debut.
Nice hat.
Believe it or not, this album had three other Top 40 singles, in addition to "Oh, Sherrie". They are "Foolish Heart", "She's Mine" and "Strung Out". That third one barely made it, though.

It's Rock 'n Roll right down to your soul......on this day in Rock music history (Feb. 26th 1991).......Great White [Band] released their very good and often overlooked 5th studio album titled 'Hooked'.Though lacking a recognizable hit single and not commercially as successful as ...Twice Shy, it still managed to peak at #18 on the Billboard 200 album chart and it was critically well received. The album was certified Gold in April 1991.The original album cover art was photographed by famous fashion photographer John Scarpati and featured a nude female model being hoisted out of the sea by a large hook. This cover was judged too risque by the label and replaced by art director Hugh Syme shortly after the initial pressing with an alternative cover that had the hook still below the sea level and the model partially submerged, so that only her head and arms were visible.

COOKIE MUELLER
Dorothy Karen “Cookie” Mueller (March 2, 1949 – November 10, 1989) was an American actress, writer and Dreamlander who starred in many of filmmaker John Waters’ early films, including Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble and Desperate Living.
Cookie Mueller grew up with her parents Frank Lennert Mueller and Anne (Sawyer) Mueller in the Baltimore suburbs in a house near the woods, a mental hospital and railroad tracks. She was nicknamed Cookie as a baby: “Somehow I got the name Cookie before I could walk. It didn’t matter to me, they could call me whatever they wanted.”
In his book Shock Value, John Waters credits Mueller with the title for his 1974 film Female Trouble. When she was hospitalized for pelvic inflammatory disease in Provincetown, Waters and Mink Stole visited Mueller. “What happened, Cook?” Waters asked. “Just a little female trouble, hon,” she replied.
Nan Goldin created and widely exhibited The Cookie Portfolio 1976–1989, a series of fifteen portraits, after Mueller’s death. One photograph, “Cookie and Vittorio’s Wedding” (1986), documents Mueller’s wedding to Vittorio Scarpati, an Italian artist and jewelry designer from Naples who died of AIDS just seven weeks before Mueller.
Mueller wrote the health column “Ask Dr. Mueller” for the East Village Eye and later served as art critic for Details. Mueller’s books, Ask Doctor Mueller (1996), a collection of her writings; Walking Through Clear Water in a Pool Painted Black (1990), a memoir; and Garden of Ashes (Hanuman Books, 1990) are cult classics. Other works include the novella Fan Mail, Frank Letters, and Crank Calls (Hanuman Books, 1988) and several collections of short prose.
Mueller died from AIDS-related causes on November 10, 1989 in New York City, aged 40. Her ashes are interred in multiple locations: on the beach near Provincetown; in the flowerbed of the Church of St. Luke in the fields in Greenwich Village; alongside those of Vittorio and her dog Beauty in the Scarpati family crypt in Sorrento, Italy; under the statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro; in the South Bronx; and in the holy waters of the Ganges River. She was survived by her son, Max Wolfe Mueller, who appeared in Pink Flamingos.
The last of Cookie’s quotes, an elegy of her intent and existence, was written shortly before her death:
“Fortunately I am not the first person to tell you that you will never die. You simply lose your body. You will be the same except you won’t have to worry about rent or mortgages or fashionable clothes. You will be released from sexual obsessions. You will not have drug addictions. You will not need alcohol. You will not have to worry about cellulite or cigarettes or cancer or AIDS or venereal disease. You will be free.”
Rest In Peace 💖

Thank you Josh Franer @franewreck for capturing this transitional moment between sets. John Scarpati @scarpatistudio suggested to me that a photographer, grip, gaffer, etc. should know his gear like a samurai who unceasingly practices with his sword. His tools should serve as an extension of himself, and he should understand the full circumference of their utility. I started studying with the camera in high school, and film+chemicals in college, and the c-stand+lights+diffusers in my professional years. An experienced assistant once answered my question concerning the 3 most important tools that he relied upon: he answered “the California Sunbounce, the Scrim Jim, and the Uncle Sam”. I promptly purchased an Uncle Sam and have appreciated its utility like a Jedi appreciates a light saber. It travels extremely well and serves to swat hard sun, shield against rain and wind, create cover for clients, and is light enough to work without a stand. It also can be driven deep into the sand or soft soil by hand and will stand up on its own. The radiating umbrella spikes can even bend and survive hard falls. Touché Uncle Sam, there’s more to you than meets the eye. Press Release:
‘Putti’s Pudding’ is a book and ‘final project’ by American writer and actor Cookie Mueller, and her husband, Italian artist Vittorio Scarpati. Published in 1989, the same year both died from complications related to AIDS, it pairs drawings by Scarpati with writing by Mueller.
Reimagined as an exhibition, Putti’s Pudding features forty–five original felt–tip pen on notepad drawings made by Scarpati when he lost the ability to speak, accompanying texts by Mueller, and a public programme of talks, readings, screenings and performance.
By the summer of 1989, Vittorio Scarpati was in the final months of his life. As Mueller explains in the introduction to ‘Putti’s Pudding’:
“As I write this, his life more or less hangs in the balance, both his lungs are collapsed, a complication of bouts with the pneumonia specific to AIDS. He’s attached by tubes to two machines called pneumothorax suction pumps. A tube the circumference of an American nickel coin is affixed into a chest incision that goes into the pleural lining of his lungs. Bubbling with water like tropical fish aquariums, these strange looking clear plastic machines drain the excessive fluid from his lungs while also inflating them, thus keeping him breathing. Out of sheer boredom with time passing, Vittorio asked for pens and pads to draw. With his indomitable spirit and vitality he set about rendering his reality though his talent.”
The resulting works tell a moving story, depicting the brutal, uncertain, ghostly nature of living with AIDS in the 1980s. However, Scarpati’s drawings also radiate life. Something accounted for, and indeed celebrated, in Mueller’s accompanying writing.
This will be the first display of Scarpati’s drawings since their inclusion in Nan Goldin’s Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing at Artists Space, New York, (1989), and the first time they have been shown outside of the US. Importantly, the exhibition introduces Scarpati, a still largely unrecognised figure, to international audiences and contributes to the ongoing project of bringing recognition to Mueller’s life and work.
Mueller first came to prominence for her ribald appearances in the early works of provocative filmmaker John Waters, who memorably described Mueller as “a writer, a mother, an outlaw, an actress, a fashion designer, a go–go dancer, a witch–doctor, an art–hag and above all, a goddess.” She went on to became a highly charismatic and influential figure in New York’s downtown scene. She penned a self-help medical column for East Village Eye, while also writing a regular art diary for Annie Flanders’ Detailsmagazine. After her death, Mueller’s stories were published in the now cult Walking Through Clear Water In A Pool Painted Black, 1990. This was the first book published by Semiotext(e)’s Native Agents imprint – a new platform for American fiction edited by Chris Kraus.
Both Mueller and Scarpati were documented prominently during this era by artists such as Gary Indiana, Peter Hujar, Philip Lorca diCorcia and, most notably, Nan Goldin (Cookie Portfolio (1977–1989) and The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1986)). Goldin has described her compulsion to photograph friends as a way to safeguard or honour them at a time when AIDS was not only untreatable, but patients were actively discriminated against by the government, health commissioners and the press.
This exhibition is curated by Paul Pieroni in partnership with Studio Voltaire.
About the artists:
Cookie Mueller (1949–1989) was an American writer, actor and ‘Dreamlander’ who starred in many of filmmaker John Waters’ early works, including Multiple Maniacs (1970) and Female Trouble (1974). Mueller wrote the health column Ask Dr. Mueller for the East Village Eye and was the art critic for Details magazine. Her Walking Through Clear Water in a Pool Painted Black (1990) was the first book published by the Chris Kraus edited Native Agents imprint for Semiotext(e). Mueller died on 10 November 1989. She was 40.
Vittorio Scarpati (1955–1989) was an Italian artist, political cartoonist and jewellery designer. He met Mueller in Positano, Italy, in the summer of 1983. Three years later they married in New York City. Scarpati died on 14 September 1989. He was 34.
