OC map 2024!
It was not long ago since Valedale been updated and it shows. Many OCs have moved there.
I have not included OCs from the old map as I didnt have access to the old file and I dont want to jump between multiple posts to get names and photos because that was just too confusing. I have done a google doc list with the Ocs so next update will be easier. But even if I didnt include OCs from the old post, we went from 73 to 95 Ocs, the population is growing.
I will not update this untill a new area been updated or added. But if anyone sees spell mistakes or wrong infomation given for ocs I can edit that. But I will not fix the map pic.

PUTTING JORVIK ON THE MAP: SIZE AND LOCATION
WHERE IS JORVIK?
Finding Jorvikâs exact location is actually pretty easy.
âJorvik, located somewhere between Norway, Iceland, and the British Isles, of which it was once part, is a nexus of worlds.â - Jorvik Calling, Prologue.
This is still a pretty large area, but one thatâs significantly narrowed down by reading Four Stories from Jorvik. Anneâs segment Midnight Sun establishes that Jorvik is at the very least partly above the arctic circle, to the point where Anne can see it while riding by Jorvik Stables in the middle of the night. This also puts Jorvik pretty close to the tectonic rift between the European and American continental plates, which handily explains why Jorvik is a volcanic Island.
HOW BIG IS JORVIK?
Jorvikâs size requires a bit more speculation, and Iâm relying on two book sources.
1: Jorvik stables is a bus trip from Jorvik city.
Anne lives in Jorvik City but goes to school with the other soul riders in Jarlaheim, and has her horse at Jorvik stables. We know that she goes there by bus, so the distance between Jarlaheim and Jorvik City shouldnât be too large; Iâm capping the max length of the bus ride to about an hour.
2: Valedale is less than a dayâs ride from the wineyard.
In The Legend Awakens, Elizabeth and the soul riders are heading to Piâs Swamp and sleep over at the Wineyard. The soul riders wake up late and leave after having eaten breakfast and lunch. The sun is âat its highest point in the skyâ when they leave, so probably around 1-2PM. Itâs twilight when they arrive, and the Baroness comments that they showed up in time for the evening feeding of the horses. Since the days are shorter in late October/early November, which is when this chapter takes place, we can guess that they arrived at around 5-6 PM.
Mapping out the most likely routes for these two trips, the route to the Wineyard is about a third of the bus route from Jorvik City to Jarlaheim. Additionally, the bus would drive on average ~70 km/h because of Jorvikâs smaller roads. The average walking speed of a horse is 6 km/h.
Now, the Valedale-Wineyard trip could take anywhere between 3-5 hours, but Iâm inclined to believe that itâs on the lower end of that scale to keep Anneâs commute as short as possible. That leaves us with a 18 km long ride, and a 54 km long bus tour that takes 46 minutes. Pretty reasonable!
RESULTS
With these new measurements, we can figure out the actual distance between different places on Jorvik. Most importantly, we can measure the absolute width from Jorviks westernmost to easternmost point: 92 km, or ~57 miles!
Having figured out an estimate of the islandâs size and location, we can now put Jorvik on the map!

I wish South Hoof had reasons to go there again. Once you complete what little quests they have now, you don't need to ever go back. Yes the new horse breed is only in South Hoof, but other than that, why should I go there? I finished the vet quests, and they don't make new ones. I finished the Madison quests, I don't have a reason to ever talk to her or her family again.
I have the same feelings about other locations too: Jorvik City, Cape West Fishing Village, Redwood Point, Tailtop Village, hell even Dundall. I have no reasons to ever go back to these places, and I wish I did. Granted, I'm not caught up with story quests so I don't know if I'll need to go back there, but as it stands right now, it's kind of depressing how limited my map range is. It's all around the beginning areas. :\

SSO Theory: The Fridge Doors and the Secret of Underground Jorvik
I'm stating up front, some of this is fact, some is educated guesswork, do with that what you will! Now, onto the theorizing!
Underground Jorvik is a mysterious place; collapsed mines, fridge doors, volatile minerals, strange noises at night; something strange is happening beneath our feet, and I might know whatâŠ
The Nightmare Institute!
The faction of Dark Core run by Darko, responsible for the creation of dark horses and other monsters.

The Nightmare Institute is mentioned only in fleeting moments that don't give away its size or location.
Now, let's put a pin in that for a moment and move onto the strange things happing beneath Jorvik!
First off, every mining operation on Jorvik seems to end in disaster. The Demascus Mine? Collapsed! The Silverglade Mine? Collapsed! The old Deep Core Mine? Collapsed!
The most recent mining attempt we're aware of on the island is GED's attempt to mine Drakonium in Old Hillcrest, which resulted in the entire town being abandoned and half their workers mysteriously vanishing.

In addition to all of these catastrophic mining attempts we also have the fridge doors! Do these things even need an introduction at this point? Four (but probably five) hatches in the ground spread throughout our in-game map whose positions seem to align with the points of a star, which is also one of the two symbols depicted on the hatches? These doors are hecka weird on every level!/pos They're unexplained. We've never been able to interact with them. The second symbol on them doesn't match anything else in the game. Spooky music plays when we approach them. At night beams of light come out of their windows. And some kind of machinery can be heard coming from them. They're weird!
There's one more oddity about them I haven't seen anyone mention. This conversation with Emma during the Purple Pony's Halloween party in 2018.
Considering that there's a fridge door in Golden Hills, near the racetrack, I assume this is what Emma is referring to! The creature she's describing sounds like a capran, remember this!
So, now we have two mysteries. Where is the Nightmare Institute and what's going on underground? I think one line of dialogue could be the answer to both these mysteries: they're the same mystery!
When we speak with Valdemar Buttergood in the One of Our Witches questline he mentions his son Scott believing in "secret tunnels beneath Jorvik connecting to an institute of corrupt creatures."
While some of Scott's paranormal beliefs have come across as outlandish, this feels far more credible than the usual moth-horse and Bighoof. We already know an institute exists that seemingly deals with "corrupt creatures," we just didn't know where. Likewise, we knew something was going on underground thanks to the presence of the fridge doors, local reports of strange sounds from underground, and numerous mining operations being plagued by misfortune.
But there's still a question left unanswered; what makes underground Jorvik so special?
The Nightmare Institute explains the strange sounds and Emma's monster (capran?) sighting by the Golden Hills hatch, but what about the minerals and gasses?
This is where my theory turns into speculation.
We know Jorvik is a volcanic island thanks to Garnok's Fury, meaning the island could potentially be riddled with lava tubes. Garnok's Fury is implied to be magical (Pandorian?) in nature, so I feel safe in assuming that its lava probably is as well.
If this is true it could explain everything. Lava tubes forged by mystical energy would probably be imbued with the same energy, explaining the dangerous minerals and gasses and possibly the presence of so-called "corrupt creatures." From all of the magical horses and companion pets in-game we know that prolonged exposure to magical energy can corrupt, or at least alter, wildlife, meaning whatever creatures took up residence in the lava tubes could be very strange. And we know GED has at least one dangerous creature on their hands in Hillcrest!
In the days of Deep Core's early mining operations, they likely discovered not only the tubes and how extensive they are, but also the strange minerals and creatures. I imagine that if this theory is true these tubes are probably an invaluable resource that Dark Core has been exploiting for YEARS! Dark Core has so many weird serums and pieces of tech, they've likely been utilizing their discoveries in the lava tubes and taking advantage of no one else has had success mining under Jorvik. Heck, Dark Core might even be deliberately sabotaging other mining attempts to monopolize whatever might be down there! GED's efforts in Hillcrest might have just slid under their radar because of them being too busy with their preparations for the reverse light ceremony!
Have I gotten too carried away with idea?/lh
This theory just makes SO much sense to me! I hope someone else finds it interesting and thank you for reading!

The Trees are part of the Squid's Plan! (major main quest spoilers)
After spending way too long playing through the new quests in SSO, I've come up with a theory. A real long theory. That the Life Wardens are siding with both Dark Riders and Soul Riders in order to repair the Wild Weave and reconnect with one another, inadvertently helping the Dark Riders to free Garnok.
Lemme explain.
This is the map in the Fort Maria portal room. It shows the seven major Life Wardens that we know of, but it also gives us some clues about the story going forwards.
First, the obvious.
Yeah, there's no way that little illustration in the corner is anything but Ol' Squiddy's Tentacles. But we knew he was imprisoned between worlds, in neither Pandoria nor Jorvik - so finding out he's been chilling in the Wild Weave, or a location only accessible by it, makes sense.
Next, when it comes to putting a name to each of these trees I think most are fairly self explanatory. We've known about most of these trees for years, even if they've never been a part of the story, such as with the Ice Tree by the Stonecutter's Vault in Dino Valley, and the Unnamed Tree way up near where you finish the Red String Trail in the Firgrove Mountains.
Where it gets interesting is with the two trees I couldn't place; such as the one between the Sentinel Tree in Mistfall and the Ice Tree in Dino Valley; and the one on the far left, signified by floating islands.
In my mind it makes sense to have a couple of the trees sprouting in Pandoria, since the two worlds are connected by the tree roots - and the only floating rocks I know about are in Pandoria - but who knows.
Overlaying the normal map on top of these locations makes it pretty clear that they're supposed to correspond to real map locations. The only anomaly is the Ice Tree and Sentinel Tree, whose positions are reversed on the portal map.
What's interesting is that Garnok, if I'm following the map's logic correctly, would hold exactly the same positioning as the Dark Core Oil Rig.
(For context, we know the Rig's position from old skybox errors that used to show it when stood in the right spots, some maps from the books (which I know aren't always canon anymore, but hey it's the best we've got) and, most recently, if the player looks South when entering Devil's Gap, thanks to that little black hole we helped Sunshine open up recently.)
Where am I going with all this? Okay!
Firstly, we know that the trees have helped the Dark Riders in the past. The Life Wardens have repeatedly said the only loyalty they have is to each other, and quite frankly after what the Jarl did, who can blame them. (Thanks Jon).
This is going into massive spoiler territory for the most recent quest as of 17/1/24 so if you haven't completed it yet, flee.
The Sentinel Tree in the Wildwoods has been corrupted by Pandorian magic for a while now. But in the newest quest, we saw Sabine using the Runesmasher to break into it and create a portal to free Erissa.
Side tangent about the hammer:
For those who didn't play the Halloween quests, basically one of the Jarl's servants got the ice valley smith to make a hammer that could destroy runestones, broke one open, and a Vala witch gave him immortality. Aka. Sive (or an identical Vala witch), who is deeply connected with the Life Wardens and who probably gave Sabine the hammer when we saw her in Devil's Gap, has no problem with this action.
The Life Wardens, or at the very least Sive, their ally, wanted the portal opened and Erissa freed.
Why?
To re-grow the Wild Weave.
Assuming Garnok's position on my map was correct, the only way the Dark Riders now have to free him is to go directly through the Wild Weave.
And since we're good people who like nature... yeahhh the Soul Riders are totally going to end up healing some trees and inadvertently opening the path to Garnok wide open.
Oh yeah. We're going to mess up royally.

Ok so remember this map?
A complete map of Jorvik, with a semi-accurate scale to measure any distance on the island. Iâm really proud of it! There is, however, one glaring problem with this map.
WHY IS JORVIK CITY SO SMALL????
Iâm sorry but Jorviks capital should not be smaller than middle-of-nowhere ranger town Dundull. The generally accepted minimum population requirements for a city are 50 000 residents. Following the canon map, Jorvik city would need to fit at least 50 000 people in what looks like 2,25 square miles. That would mean Jorvik city houses 22 222 people per square mile, making it the 24th most densely populated city in the WORLD.
Possible? Sure. Likely? Considering the clear inspiration from the way less dense Stockholm, the lack of giant apartment complexes or slum neigbourhoods, which would imply that people live closely together, Iâm gonna have to say no.
So how big should Jorvik city be, if the map size is inaccurate? Kind of hard to tell since we canât see places like Governors Fall or Aideens Plaza on the map.
But there is one place we CAN see.

And if we can use this map, we can measure how long it takes to cross it.
I am very normal about the horse game.
From the barracks to the pier, it takes 38 seconds to cross the map. On a similarly flat surface on Jorvik, we can measure how long Pier 13 actually is, giving us this comparison.
Now, Iâm going to show two theories on how big Jorvik City is based on these measurements.
The first one is the most canon-compliant, but also the most ridiculous. By comparing pier 13 to the area outside jorvik stables, we know that pier 13 is ~1 km long. Yes, this is an absolutely massive pier donât worry about it. Looking at the jorvik city map, we can see that this smaller pier is meant to be to represent Pier 13, and we can do the math from there. Jorvik gets an area of 340 square km, and if we use Stockholms population density as a guide, Jorvik City has about 1,8 million citizens. Cool! One problem though.
You canât fit it on the map. A city this big would take up almost one fourth of Jorvik, and youâd need to redraw the entire map to make it fit.
So my other option shifts the canon a bit to make the maps fit together. If we go against canon and assume that Pier 13 is actually the larger pier, that downsizes Jorvik City to ~47,5 square kilometres, with a population of around 250 000. This makes Jorvik more comparable to a more densely populated Reykjavik; smaller in area but with double the amount of people. And while it still messes with the coastline a bit, it at least fits into Central Bay.
Personally I think both theories work, but for consistencyâs sake, Iâm leaning more towards the second theory.

My bestie @aryamistwood and I keep chattin about where we think SSO is gonna update next. They noted its been kinda in quest order/what locations players find first.
So here's my theoretical order of location updates (no specific timeline but i do predict we get at LEAST two of these this year if not 3. They've updated a ton in the time ive been playing sso, aka 4 years, so i can see it happening)
- Jarlaheim (May be broken up into Jarlaheim proper, Paddock Island, and Jorvik stables as seperate entities.)
- South Hoof
- Greendale Forest/Wolf Hall Inn (as one update potentially)
- OR Wolf Hall/Nilmer's Highland together
- the new map area they hinted at??
- god please update Dino Valley
- Jasper's Farm and mayhaps the surrounding goldenhills forest
- Crescent Moon Village/the areas you first see when unlocking Epona
Would love to know y'alls predictions/thoughts. My most wanted areas are Jarlaheim, South Hoof, and Dino tbh
#sso#star stable online#ssoblr#horse game#star stable#this is what we've chatted about the last couple months#but the combo of the wall at jorvik stables being gone#and a maybe leak on reddit about jarlaheim files#im extra hype#my og prediction was AFTER EQ festival but like#what if theyre wild and drop it same time?

the trailblazer track's absence (for someone who completed it) really shows how much it added to the game, to me anyway
for the first time in years i did dailies around the map that weren't just stable chores or farahs workshop, reminded me of how it felt while leveling my reputation with each faction around jorvik and actually being interested in these forgotten npcs//their backgrounds

What area do people want to be updated the most?
I think area wise there is all of the harvest contries (minus greendale) and south hoof peninsula. I dont think south hoof havent even gotten a texture upgrade like the rest of the map.
And as settlements that havent been upgraded yet there is Cape West, Silverglade Vineyard, Jarlaheim, Jorvik Stables, Cresent Moon Village, New Hillcrest Firgrove.
In my opinon I would love to see the acient tree + stone circle in south hoof to be updated. And the swamp north of hillcrest to be updated. Also Jarlaheim. But for now I think it works. Same for Firgrove village and new hillcrest are new enough to not needing an upgrade for awhile.
While Cape West Im worried for. I love it for what it is and with the look of it, it looks like SSO will completly reimagine areas when updating them. I dont want Cape west to change that much, just to have a texture upgrade.
