It's actually so crazy how easy something can become lost media. Since I'm preparing to clean out my laptop and install the sdd drive, I'm browsing through my old oooold music to see what I wanna keep and what I can delete. And you know, it's almost all jpop, jrock from mid 2010s... And some of it is really popular stuff like kyary pamyu pamyu or daoko or charisma.com or scandal... And I'm simultaneously bookmarking the music I liked on spotify.

Anyway, have I ever talked about 0.8syooogeki on here? Or 0.8 Byo to Syogeki? Or 0.8 Byou to Shougeki, I guess either one is fine... I've known them for a pretty brief time, having only come across them with the release of their single Arishima Machine Gun in 2014. Which I immediately loved, but i think it was the very first time I actually couldn't really bring myself to share it with anyone - it was so loud, weird, noisy, unlike anything I've ever heard before... And then came out their last full album, Hakai Pop, or "destruction pop". One of my favorite albums ever. 0.8syooogeki used to be a somewhat experimental band, but for some reason Hakai Pop didn't seem as well received by the fans. I remember looking them up and seeing that people were somewhat upset that they have dialed back on the metal part and went for more of an electronic sound... Ultimately they released one more EP, called Zarathustra, and disbanded officially few months later. Don't bother looking them up on spotify - none of the three are in there, unfortunately.

Anyway, the reason why I bring it up is because today, out of all days, I found out that between Arishima Machine Gun, and Hakai Pop, they released one more 3-track EP. Which I never knew about. So now, I'm googling it frantically, looking for a way to download it somehow, even though almost all results are just really old listings for sale which are either inactive, or only available for Japan. I listened to a sample, and I guess that's it. I guess it's probably not real lost media, copies definitely exist somewhere out there. But it still made me a little bit upset. How has it became harder to find music, if it isn't American? Despite all the progress we've made with the Internet? It's kind of depressing.

I first found out about dreamcatcher when a jrock vs krock video autoplayed on YouTube and Deukae played on it. The exact clip was Good night and the part where Gahyeon is falling through a void. I took a note of their group name but never really followed through on checking them out. Then one day idk where I saw them mentioned again and vaguely remembered the snippet id heard so I searched them up and you and I was the top result. The song and video were nice, a whole bop, I developed a mini crush on Handong's five second of screentime and Dami's voice had all my attention. Also the hip sway girl was pretty. It didn't hook me though. Like the chorus wasn't my thing but it was nice.

Then one day i found good night in my recommended and it really hooked me. Particularly the harmonies and rap. Then I watched a bunch of their old title tracks because I had time and was in the mood but it was What that hooked me fully. Siyeon popped up and I was like "miss ma'am WHO are YOU? I've never seen YOU before!". And I legit thought she was Dongie cause I saw some people mention missing Dong. I think by then maybe scream had dropped and Scream was THE song that made me stan them.

Then I started watching yt fan videos, found them a bit weird and it just felt strange that only specific members seemed to have any interaction whatsoever and instead chose to check out their vlives. By this point I was on my way to bias Dami and was already in live with Handong, who I only found out through vlives was the one absent. I also still didn't know who Siyeon really was or that she was a main vocal.

And then I watched that one JiU live where Siyeon pops up without her lipstick on and I was so smitten. To the point that i started looking up Siyeon content and found clips from scream era of her getting smacked in the face by a cat's tail and JiU not letting her watch her paradise teaser and he calling pie fly.

And she overtook literally every ult i have ever had within a week.

currently 153. am working on posting a lot of the tumblr-fics there eventually, too.

What’s your total ao3 word count?

How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? 

overall in my entire life eight fandoms. the first ones were jrock and kpop and i haven’t written anything for those in years and years. on ao3 there’s five fandoms but three of them only have four fics overall so. haven’t exactly been in those fandoms for real. so it leaves The Old Guard with 15 fics, and Resident Evil with 134 fics. 

Are there any new fandoms you want to write for? 

no. i don’t really fall into new fandoms very easily.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

top4 is all ToG: nobody's perfect, that day is not today, the world will wait, within the heart a flame of desires. then the fifth one is RE: now drunk on lust I drown in you (forever within I'm lost in you).

Which of your fics do you want more attention for?

all the nivannedy ones? :’D uhm. I don’t know. in general it feels the nivannedy ones, and Jake/Piers, and even the metaltango are left pretty ignored but I know the first two are rarepairs so it’s my own damn fault. 

Do you respond to comments, why or why not? 

yes I do. if I haven’t responded to one then it’s because I didn’t yet get to it, or that I somehow forgot, which has happened a few times. I feel that if someone is nice enough to take the time to comment, I want to thank them personally! plus, comments are super duper rare so it’s not like it takes up so much time to respond :’D the grand fic challenge fics have averaged 2-3 comments per fic so lmao it’s not a huge effort to respond to them.

What sorts of things do you normally write? 

emotional things? a lot of Feelings™ lmao I bleed them all over everything I ever write :’D there’s a lot of domestic fluff (and/or smut) and I feel that’s probably my brand but I’ve tried to branch out to some more action-y stuff occasionally.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? 

maybe end of the road, or when the light of the chosen has died, or so came our time? those all end in death, so. but depends on what you’d count as angsty, of course.

What’s a fic that pushed you out of your comfort zone?

i don’t know. i generally just write stuff I like? uhm. maybe the epic nivannedy re4 au only the courage to continue counts, because I don’t do well with multichapters in general, I don’t have the patience for slow burn or long storylines. but i just adore re4 so much i’ve written almost 60k for this fic already, so :’D and maybe i could also mention I am the light that shall lead you to darkness bc it’s not a pairing i typically go for and not the genre i typically go for? it was fun, tho :’D ohh and without hope, without fear, my first monsterfucking fic! i think it turned out really solid.

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? 

no. don’t really have any interest in them.

Have you ever had a fic translated? 

I’ve had people ask if they can translate fic before but idk if it has actually happened.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? 

yes, but it’s been very very long. would actually like to try it again sometime. but it’s not that easy because the characterizations need to line up well enough from both ends for it to be an actually cohesive end result :’D

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? 

i don’t know, really. all the ones i want to finish I am currently also determined to finish :’D i have some abandoned ones but i have no desire to go back to them either. i am very unsure about one chreon au but let’s see, maybe i can somehow shorten the outline and actually write it one day.

What are you currently working on? 

I have 26 things on my to-fic-list right now :’D currently I’m mostly working on a self-indulgent snowy vacation fic where Piers and Leon go to Finland (yay :D) and the RE4 au. 

What are your writing strengths? 

emotions? I think I get the feelings across fairly well. little domestic moments are my thing, little gestures and small everyday moments and shoving as much emotion in them as humanly possible. at least I think so? if any of you have a different answer for this please do tell me :’D

What are your writing weaknesses? 

action? :’D i don’t know her.

What was the first fandom you wrote for? Most recent? 

oh, those jrock times, Diru was the first :’D and the most recent is ToG. neither of which I actively write right now tho. at the moment i only write RE fics.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? 

i’ve written way too many fics to only pick one c’mon :’D this is not possible. i’m just gonna go with the self-indulgent series, because it’s self-indulgent for a reason lol it makes me very happy.

What fic are you most proud of? 

again, I’ve written so much... and I’m proud of so many of the fics. hmmhm. maybe so I confide in you (for nothing compares to you), my no-Ashley au where Piers is the president’s son Leon is sent in to rescue. I am ridiculously fond of it :D and I think it’s really good!

also the guess who’s back (Krauser’s back) series, I think it turned out really good and I’ve been in a metaltango sort of mood fairly often lately. also and each one of us is a path somewhere, my RE2 nivannedy au. it was the first time I let myself write a game-focused fic and it was so worth it.

and I am going to plug two recent fics too because I am super proud of them: stay until the end of life and will you be by me? both are nivannedy, both are very focused on recovery, in the first one Leon is very sick and has to fight for his life and in the second one Piers has to fight through being infected to what the new normal for him will be. I’m really happy with how they both turned out.

2. the second thing i Always bring up at icebreakers/etc is that i am a certified scuba diver!! i adore the ocean and respect it deeply with all the fear in my heart,, it’s so lovely, i’ll never forget the feeling of being like 50m down and looking up and it’s just: w a t e r

3. i really enjoy finding random lil communities of hobbyists and uhhhh that basically bleeds over into whatever i become mildly obsessed with for the next couple months and inevitably becomes a future life goal; currently it is fishkeeping/aquascaping and rare succulents ESPECIALLY haworthias i love haworthias so much guys

4. whenever i have a choice my academic projects are like 80% about fandoms and 20% about medical humanities and thats basically a summary of Me As An Academic And Human Being (which speaking of,, i just wrapped up a conference presentation where i got to present my research on queer cn diaspora in danmei fandom and i was so nervous but it was SO fun even tho it was over zoom)

5. oh my god not to get all academic again but i am Obsessed w the medical humanities you guys it’s so cool (basically it’s the intersection of medicine + the arts, whether that means incorporating art as an augmentative treatment or incorporating medical experiences into art!! a lot of ppl are somewhat familiar w music therapy or art therapy and those fall under this category) LIKE,, i honestly feel so seen at this intersection?? and both fields would truly benefit from (and need!!) the influence of the other

6. and now for a complete 180: i go through clothes super slowly and rarely buy new clothes so half my wardrobe hasnt changed in Years . meaning: a bunch of it is still stuff my mom picked out for me o)-( this is an unfortunate combo of the fact that i used to hate clothes shopping + never used to go shopping w friends Ever + am a creature of habit

7. ok so my parents made me learn piano from a young age and i, to their horror, actually loved it and seriously considered persuing music ed when i graduated hs LMFAO like if i lived in an ideal world my majors would be music ed + museum studies / museumology + medical humanities + fandom/media studies

8. as a result of being a longtime classically trained pianist i subscribe p closely to the Stereotypical Classical Musician Genres (kpop, anime music / jrock, modern classical) with a dash of whatever my friends throw my way (alt, indie, folk, i dont even technically know most of the terms lmfao) so it really tracks that my fav song rn is from a modern-traditional cn music group

9. i have a whole complex abt being multifaceted and Extremely Interesting As A Person so this is great for me HAHAHAHA but yes i am fundamentally v concerned with being a ~unique individual~ (my enneagram rly called me out on that one......im a type 4 iirc) and i feel like that shows a lot in how i use and present myself on this site lmaooo

10. my fav font rn is ovo !!! i used it to make a zine recently for class and it was such a good vibe i adore it (im currently taking a class on zines / independent publishing w my all time fav prof who also literally happens to be a municipal-level poet laureate and a rock enthusiast its BONKERS i would d*e for her)

27th August 2018 was the day I first listened to Stray Kids, and as if it was destiny, I couldn't help but fall even deeper and deeper for a kpop group. Something that never happened before, since I was deeply into jrock and other stuff, but with Stray Kids... It just clicked. I binge-watched the show in, like, 2/3 days and in less than a week I just felt so emotionally attached to these boys it even hurt. I remember in December 2018 I ordered my very first kpop album (I am: who) as a bday gift to myself, I remember when I invited my best friend over and unboxed the album together, admiring the small photocards and the beautiful photos in the album. I remember the very first comeback I had with them, being I am: you, a couple of months after I got into them.

But I also remember how, back in February 2018, I read a tweet about Stray Kids debuting, and how I scrolled past it because "I didn't really care". But how come, 6 months later, when my best friend told me about them, I remembered that name right away?

I remember how, in May 2018, I was desperately looking for music that would comfort me, having unsuccessful and frustrating results.

I remember how it felt like I was finally breathing fresh air after years when I finally crossed paths with Stray Kids. How it felt like someone was holding my hand as I kept walking on this ruined street, to some unclear finish line. How they were always there to comfort me whenever I had really bad moments, how their lyrics touched my heart so easily.

It's such a funny coincidence, how 2 years ago I was there witnessing Stray Kids starting to get all those Rookie Awards, and here I am, 2 years later, witnessing their first mv to reach 100M views.

There had been up and downs, but I'm always here for them just like they're always here for us.

They're really the reason why I haven't given up yet even though it's not easy at all. And they're also the reason why I was able to meet such precious people that I care about so much. So yeah, congrats Stray Kids, you've come so far ♡

“PIRI” by Dreamcatcher

I’d like to personally think Happyface Entertainment for always doing my girls justice. In terms of KPop Girl Groups, Dreamcatcher is an outlier. They have a unique sound - a rock sound. I find the group itself has the potential to one day encourage fans of JPop and JRock to get into KPop since Dreamcatcher has that “this is an anime opening” sound. Which, again, is unique and I love it.

Overall Sound

As is expected of Dreamcatcher, the song itself is powerful. Like their other title tracks thus far, it sounds like an anime opening. The music is strong, like something I’d expect from a band, while managing to not overpower the girls’ vocals and rapping. It’s a song that keeps you captive as you listen and only pulls you in more as it progresses.

MV

This editing is gorgeous. I especially was a fan of how the two outfits worn during the choreography scenes matched. it made it easier for me to keep track of who was who and made the transition from black/red to pink and back go much smoother. If the outfits had been too different, it would have looked rough and choppy. I’d also like to say I’m always a fan of girl groups wearing pants. Please, give me more outfits with pants.

Like most of Dreamcatcher’s MV’s, I don’t know what’s going on at all, but I’m till drawn in. The video is both creepy but enchanting. I found myself pulled along with the storyline. I don’t quite know if their MVs are supposed to be connected since the album names seemed to connect, but...they’re all really fun to watch and well edited.

Lyrics Meaning

WTF is a “Piri”? The lyrics tend to translate to “blow the piri.” Since I’m sure my lovely readers don’t feel like searching that up, I searched it. Honestly, my only results brought up the piri-piri pepper?

Overall, the song’s lyrics really fit the whole nightmare thing they have going on for the album. They talk about needing to be saved and saying they’re in a drastic situation. The lyrics themselves don’t seem to hold any “deep” meaning, but that’s not always expected with music. Sometimes it’s just nice to have a powerful rock song, y’know?

Choreography

When I look at choreography, I look at how it makes me feel. For “Piri,” it’s not the same “moved to tears” I get with some other dances (see: “Knock” by KNK). However, it still keeps me captive. I love the range of motion, the movement, the graceful elements (ie, the graceful hand motions while staying still) mixed with elements that seem more “hard rock” (ie, them going up and down while their legs are spread and slightly bent). The entry perfectly pulls in your attention as they start with an opening that requires each member move at just the right time and be at just the right position to make it work. It’s so complex that it can’t help but catch your eye.

I’d listen to this song if I was...

This is one of my “going to work” songs. I love a good rock-sounding song to get me ready to deal with whatever the day throws at me. Since I work retail, I feel the need to be pumped up and ready to go. This song perfectly does that for me.

Because both songs give me the feeling of an anime opening, the first song I’ll recommend is “Run to You” by SEVENTEEN. Many fans of this song have compared it to an anime opening and I’ve always agreed. It’s another song I’ve tried to use to get my JPop loving friends into KPop.

“Stand By Me” by N.Flying is a Japanese song (by a Korean band) which also sounds very anime-ish. Some fans say anime opening, others say close. I’d, personally, pick an anime opening for it. N.Flying themselves are extremely talented as a band and I’d easily say they’re my favorite Korean band (sorry, Day6).

When it comes to songs I love to just rock out to my car, “Sing Sing” by Marianas Trench goes alongside “PIRI” and it’s not uncommon for me to play them one after the other. Marianas Trench is often good for those before-work songs like Dreamcatcher. I often rely on both to really get me ready to go.

Final Words

If you want to get into girl groups but aren’t into the hip-hop style and are tired of the overused cute style, Dreamcatcher is the group for you.
