05.24.24 John Zorn’s ensemble, the New Masada Quartet, played at Roulette. Performing classic compositions from the Masada songbooks, NMQ is a tight unit of like-minded virtuosi and one of the best groups Zorn has ever had. Bristling hot guitar master Julian Lage, bass wizard Jorge Roeder and 30-year Zorn veteran Kenny Wollesen perform with a crackling live energy that brings the Masada music to life.

Song Review: Julian Lage - “Northern Shuffle” (Live, Jan. 20, 2024)
Tethered to blues and rock ‘n’ roll music, but jazz at its core, “Northern Shuffle” is music for the masses.
Performed by Julian Lage and his band Jan. 20 in San Francisco and just released on professional video, the eight-minute instrumental is an exercise in virtuosity with a defining theme that could anchor any number of first-generation rock songs and electric guitar solos that would turn B.B. King’s head in Lage’s direction.
Back by piano, keyboards, sax, double bass and drums, Lage goes way out as he mixes form with formlessness and melody with dissonance. But that deep groove of a theme is never far away and is usually on someone’s instrument even when the other musicians are off on another planet.
Lage is one of those guys who probably makes purists scoff and who has likely made neophytes embrace jazz. Wherever one falls on the spectrum, “Northern Shuffle” is likely to have appeal as it packs pretty much everything into an easily digestible - but still challenging - taste.

Last one for today. The album cover for Julian Lage’s new album ‘Speak To Me’. This was fun to do. I feel like my lines are slightly better than I’ve done before, even if the proportions are very much off in comparison to the actual cover. Trying to form shape and depth through the use of shadow was super hard and didn’t really come off but I enjoyed trying it anyway. Also this is a really great album and I would recommend it if you like jazz.

Song Review: Julian Lage - “As it Were” (Live, Jan. 20, 2024)
On stage in San Francisco, Julian Lage found the balance between form and formlessness, “As it Were,” with convincingly authentic synth strings providing a lush bed for his delicate runs on the neck of his acoustic guitar.
The brushed drums and double bass of the rhythm section assist in creating a purer-sounding “As it Were,” as Lage’s guitar pops and his accompanists capture a silkiness lacking on the studio version that appears on Speak to Me.
Skip that one. Do not skip this one.
