The Crossing – Johnny Clegg
The Crossing – Johnny Clegg
The Crossing – Johnny Clegg Written for Dudu Ndlovu, one of Clegg’s dancers who was killed during the violence of the early 90’s, ‘The Crossing’ is a moving song and one of the standout tracks on ‘Heat, Dust & Dreams’ his album from 1993. On the face of it the song could be about crossing over from the land of the living to be with the ancestors, but, given the time this song was released, it was…

He is seen dressed casually in flip flops and a cap, pushing the newborn pair in a stroller. Although we do not have so much details of the little cutees as Kahn and Candace have been keeping it under wraps but we are certain the twins are boys.
The couple had their first son, Jaxon Milo in 2015.
“Plenty of people have raised their kids without the advice in books and they’ve all turned out fine,” Kahn told YOU back in 2015.
“It’s a nerve-wracking thing and a big responsibility but I’m also so excited to be a dad.”

✅Dica de som #12 - The parlatones
Ouçam The parlatones!

Live at the Balalaika – pop-up theatre in October

Video
“Can You Feel It?” is the chart-topping first single from the @parlotones latest studio album, “China”. The concept for “Can You Feel It?” originated mainly from The Parlotones front man, Kahn Morbee. He visualized a video shot entirely from the protagonist’s point of view, the protagonist being a young man roaming through the city streets trying to outrun a danger we never really see, which ties in neatly with the themes of fear as explored in the song. At three specific points in the video our runner bumps into the band performing in various locations. The video, produced by Mirror Mountain Pictures, was shot entirely on the streets of Johannesburg and Cape Town over the course of several days. To reinforce the themes of fear and danger, another visual layer was added to illustrate the protagonist’s thoughts as he progresses through his urban environment, including deep existential ideas that perhaps form the basis of all our collective human fears. The video aims to comment on the sensory overload we are confronted with on a daily basis in modern society. . . . . . . . . #parlotones #canyoufeelit #officialmusicvideo #china #southafrica # Johannesburg #alternative #capetown #videooftheday #videogram #instavideo #instagood #VOTD #music #video #musiclove #newmusic #nowplaying #musicvideopromotion #musicvideodistrobution #distro #albumoftheday #listentothis #lovethissong #feelit #wecanfeelit https://www.instagram.com/p/By6c_cVFZwE/?igshid=100kmaw5phfd2

The Parlotone’s Kahn Morbee talks about his music and inspirations
Who is Kahn?
Kahn Morbee is the lead vocalist and guitarist for the South African indie band, The Parlotones. He has also made a name for himself as a songwriter and solo artist. The artist from Johannesburg formed the Parlotones in 1998 along with his bandmates, Paul Hodgson, Glenn Hodgson and Neil Pauw. Both the Parlotones and Kahn have won international acclaim. Achievements include winning the south african music awards (Parlotones) and coaching other talents to win ‘The Voice South Africa’ (Kahn). The group teamed up with Shakira and Alicia Keys to open the 2010 FIFA world cup tournament.
The Crossing
Recently, Kahn undertook a charitable project along with other 50 other South African musicians, including his close friend Karen Zoid. The group of diverse musicians from multiple genres all had one thing in common: they were inspired by Johnny Clegg at some stage.
In honour of Johnny’s recent retirement, the group called ‘The friends of Johnny Clegg’ recorded a cover of Johnny’s song,  ‘The crossing’, which has made an emotional impact on the South African community. We got in touch with Kahn to discuss the philanthropic project that aims to improve education in South Africa.
Discussing the influence of Johnny Clegg on his music career, Kahn revealed that Johnny proved the ability of African artists to be successful on a global stage. He felt that there is a certain inferiority complex amongst African musicians; they feel they cannot match up to the success of artists from countries such as America. Johnny Clegg’s global recognition made massive strides in changing that. It made him believe it was possible to make a career out of music.
Inspiring love and tolerance
When asked about how he tried to inspire others through his own music, it was clear to see Kahn’s passion. He said he tried to tell the story of the human journey. “Music is about uniting people! It is about spreading the language of love and tolerance”. The collaboration of the artists on the recent single ‘The Crossing’ is a good example of this.
A small group of artists, including Kahn wanted to pay tribute to Johnny. Aside from his recent retirement, Johnny has also been battling cancer, and so they felt the single should have a charitable element. They got in touch with Johnny’s manager, and made the proposal, asking what cause Johnny would like to support. Johnny chose education, leading to a partnership with the click foundation, which aims to increase literacy and numeracy rates amongst small children in South Africa. So far, the single has raised R850,000 ($ 60,000). Johnny was ecstatic about this effort, which is enough to support about 4300 kids through the click foundation.
Kahn and I wrapped up our conversation with an exchange of political ideologies that I will not repeat here. However, he did clarify that he tried to keep his ideas on politics out of music. He reinstated that his music is about the human journey. He sees this medium as more of an escape from both the positives and negative of everyday living.
Changing the narrative
My last question was intended to bring the focus back to why we do what we do; ‘How do you think you are changing the African narrative?’ Kahn felt he makes the most impact through causes he supports outside of music. Although, through his music, he tries to use the platform he has been given to disseminate a positive message. He also felt that bands such as his advocate ‘the independence of music away from prescripted western influences’. In the future he may get more political, because one of his visions is to change the disappointment in how democracy has evolved, especially in the African countries.
The success of the Parlotones abroad says that people love to hear what they do. I loved my short conversation with Kahn, who came across as a genuine soul. Like all of us, he is trying to get the message in his heart across the best way possible. Personally, I am inspired by projects such as ‘The Friends of Johnny Clegg’, which embody collaboration for a greater cause. Find out more here, and watch the video below if you haven’t already, or even if you have!!

The Parlotones Celebrate 20 Years With A Brand New Album | The Return Of Perez
The Parlotones celebrate 20 years with a brand new album
The creative process commenced with Kahn Morbee spending time in the UK with the likes of Grammy-nominated Sacha Skarbek (who wrote James Blunt’s hit single ‘You’re Beautiful’ and has worked with artists such as Adele, Lana Del Rey and Jason Mraz) and others, through which the foundation of the album was born. The album offers 25 tracks…

SEASVND speaks to Zikhona 'Zee' Gqamana
🎤Background "Born and raised in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape. 24 years of age. Matriculated in 2011 at Victoria Girls’ High School, where my involvement in cultural activities fuelled my passion for the arts, particularly music. I further continued my studies in the Information Technology field and I recently have obtained a BSc Hons in Information Systems Degree from Rhodes University."
🎤Why pursue music? "Firstly, as much as I have always known I would end up pursuing music as a career – it was not something that happened over night. I feel like I have always found myself stuck between two worlds since being formerly educated, graduating from tertiary and getting a regular job is portrayed as “success” – more especially in the Black community. Whereas, wanting to a follow a career which is labelled as “unstable” is not a decision I have always felt confident in going with mostly because of outside influences. “Will my family be disappointed in me? Will I earn enough money singing for a living? Will people like my music? Will I be taken advantage of in this industry?” –These are questions I would constantly ask myself, and instead of trusting in my talent first, I held back from a lot of opportunities.
After taking all of that confusion into consideration, I thought to myself how many other Black South Africans in our youth actually have the privilege to be educated in a decent school and have parents who would sacrifice anything for their daughter to hold that tertiary degree no matter the hardships they go through. That is what made me realize how blessed I am, concurrently that is how I survived the so called “tough varsity life” - gratitude.
I am glad I took the road ‘less travelled’, now I can focus on building my career whether it be starting my own IT company or be a well-recognized recording artist – I feel like I can conquer the world."
🎤Past projects "2011 – Joined a local creative group, Blah Ze Blah, as the lead vocal. Based in Grahamstown. Some of my highlights included performing at the Annual National Arts’ Festival, recording songs including a tribute song specially dedicated to my brother’s late best friend Lukhanyo Dude, titled Uvalo.
2013 – Entered Clash of The Choirs Season 1, representing the Gauteng 20-piece choir, whose choir master was Zakes Bantwini. Came 3rd overall.
2017 – Entered The Voice SA Season 2, representing Kahn Morbee’s team and made it to top 16 of the series."
🎤What are you currently working on? "After I was voted out of The Voice, I decided to take advantage of the momentum and exposure I had already gained from the period I was still in the competition and joined a live entertainment agency – this way, I can use the platform to be discovered by clients who are interested in booking me to perform at their events, and possibly this can also aid in starting a fan base."
🎤Plans for the future "Now that I have already graduated from university, I aspire to be a developed musician. I have dedicated most of my youth in completing my studies and now I have the freedom to decide how far I want to take my music career.
The future is looking quite bright for me as a musician I must say, but unfortunately I cannot share much detail about such endeavors for the time being, due to contractual obligations and also because I want to take people by surprise. I am most certainly though, looking forward to writing and releasing my own music soon. For me, music is not just about wanting to hear your song play on the radio and wondering how many records you can sell – it’s about honesty and passion first, then the rest can follow. I am still trying to discover my sound, and feeling comfortable in telling my own story, and in that way I can have a genuine connection with the people that will listen to my music."
🎤What motivates you? "I know this might sound cliché or unexpected, but what motivates me the most is where I come from. I was not raised in the most glamorous house, biggest city or by the world’s wealthiest parents – I was taught to use all the opportunities given to me that my parents never had and make something great out of them. Everything that I am today I owe to my parents, but most importantly where I am today, I have earned that myself and should be proud of the things I have accomplished thus far at my age."

We Could Be Divine – Kahn & Karen Zoid (Video screen grab)
I must admit to not particularly liking the trend in modern pop music where every other song is Artist 1 Featuring Artist 2 and sometimes Artist 3, Artist 4, Artist 5 etc. However, in recent-ish history there have been some cracking collaborations on the local music music scene and 2 of these have already featured on the list, namely…

Music, comedy take centre stage at National Arts Fest
A Midsummer Nights Dream The Ballet – Mahlatse Sachaneas Oberon with his fairies.
Arts and entertainment lovers should keep their eyes peeled for a series of early booking opportunities for this year’s National Arts Festival.
For the first time, popular shows will enjoy a limited release ahead of the 9 May online box office opening and full programme reveal. This will allow festival-goers a chance to secure some top shows and start shaping their Festival experience. Details will be released on social media.
National Arts Festival
To date the Festival’s main programme has been announced and fans are currently digesting numerous reasons to make 2017 a big Festival year.
SERIOUS ABOUT COMEDY The National Arts Festival is tearing up the comedy stage this year, starting with international comedian Stephen K Amos on the opening weekend. The globe-trotting laughter master will perform his new show WORLD FAMOUS on 2 & 3 July only. Tickets are now available so fans should grab them while they’re hot.
Together with the Brighton Fringe, the National Arts Festival has brought IT’S ONLY BIRDS to the 2017 Festival; Louise Reay’s trail-blazing language experiment in non-verbal communication. “You’ll understand it but won’t know why”, says Chinese-speaking Reay, who was recently won awards in Brighton and at other World Fringe Alliance events in Adelaide and Edinburgh.
Home-grown talents John van de Ruit (Spud) and Ben Voss (Beauty Ramapelepele) are reunited for a savagely funny look at all that is wrong with the ‘Rainbow Nation’ in MAMBA REPUBLIC. Topics such as fees must fall, state capture, online dating, the economy, sport, technology, casual racism, an alternative national anthem, and even the most unusual football match in living memory, are given the once over by the duo. Succeeding its predecessors Green Mamba (2002) and Black Mamba (2005), the show will run from 2-8 July.
Trailing endless accolades and endorsements from international festivals– including the Brighton and Cape Town Fringe 2016, the UK’s The Pretend Men will present POLICE COPS; an action-packed hour of adrenaline-fueled physical comedy, cinematic style and uncompromising facial hair. Runs daily throughout the Festival.
There’s also the return of the ever popular VERY BIG COMEDY SHOW (5 July), a one-night only comedy gala evening, produced and emcee’d by Rob van Vuuren. This year’s show will include Loyiso Gola, Tats Nkonzo, Mojak Lehoko, Alan Committie, Louise Reay, Nik Rabinowitz and Virgil Prins. Expect to see plenty more exciting comedy reveals and familiar names as the Fringe programme goes online.
MUSICAL GENIUS LIVE It’s an exciting year for music on the Festival’s Main stages as Featured Artist, Neo Muyanga, leads the charge through a programme filled with tradition, innovation and experimentation.
Muyanga’s solo work, Solid(T)Ary Work, promises a survey of the tradition of protest song in the global south: moving swiftly between the chanted chorales of Soweto and Salvador to the laments around the squares of Tahrir and Meskel, the presentation is a musical contemplation of modes of resistance in a world hit by flux. Muyanga will also present a collection of songs and music through a trio comprised of Andre Swartz, Peter Ndlala and Eastern Cape-born artist Msaki.
Msaki, recently nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA), also performs with her band the Golden Circle in PLATINUMb HEART, an exploration of trauma and its ability to ossify, alienate and elude one into thinking one is coping. “The heart merely becomes numb as we move on to the next #trending issue without a chance to mourn or the time to heal,” says Msaki.
THE STANDARD BANK YOUNG ARTIST FOR MUSIC in 2017, Abel Selaocoe, celebrates a much-anticipated return visit to South Africa after an extended time spent playing on top international stages. Abel’s Festival offering will explore the virtuosity of the cello and his diverse musicianship ranging from Debussy’s poetic and vivid Cello Sonata to James Macmillan’s spiritual reflective music – ending with foot stomping klezmer and African style inspired pieces. Catch him on the 5 & 6 July only.
Off the back of the release of their debut number 1 charting collaboration, Kahn Morbee and Karen Zoid will present one concert only (3 July) of WE COULD BE DIVINE their new collaboration and a song writing process Kahn describes as “organic and effortless”. Festival audiences are well advised to book now for what is sure to be an early sell-out show.
Another Festival favourite is the GALA CONCERT; taking place on the closing weekend of the Festival this year (8 July) it will feature the Cape Town Philharmonic, conducted by Richard Cock, with soloists Abel Selaocoe (cello) and Luis Magalhães (piano).
Double platinum selling a cappella group The Soil will present two concerts on 30 June and 1 July. Defined as ‘Kasi Soul’, their music is a blend of contemporary township style and an eclectic mix of urban contemporary, fusing beat box and soul. This show has been opened for limited bookings, visit the box office to check availability.
RAGTIME PLUS (1&2 July) is an informative and highly accessible programme about ragtime music. Presented in France and Switzerland to great audience and critical response, it’s an ongoing and ever-evolving project, which changes as creator Liza Joubert finds different pieces and new information to present to different audiences.
The debut production by the award-winning Charl du Plessis Trio, BAROQUESWING, returns from sold out tours in Europe and the Far-East, to perform in a series of Grahamstown concerts with famous melodies from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Bach’s Air on a G String and Musette and Minuet from Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena, amongst others (29 and 30 June).
THE CHILDREN’S CONCERT is a great way to introduce children to music and the orchestra with a relaxed and interactive concert of popular classics and South African favourites – children can meet the musicians in the National Youth Wind Orchestra, and a few familiar (or unfamiliar) instruments. Catch it on the 7 July.
Another inspiration to children – and adults – everywhere is Pendo Masote, a 13-year-old violinist who will play with a small string ensemble. Born into a richly musical environment, Pendo is proof that classical music has a bright future. See him perform on 29 and 30 June and 1 July.
Jimmy Nevis whose hit songs include Elephant Shoes, Heart Boxing, Balloon, 7764, Misscato, All About It, and his breakout new single Don’t Wanna Fight will perform on 30 June only.
A journey through time and place, exploring new genres for the violin such as film and gaming music, is how Naomi Tagg describes NEOLEKTRA. “I wanted to break away from classical ideas of the violin and to present it in a light that was accessible to many more listeners than just the classical world,” says Tagg. Made up of 5 string players, a DJ/synthesist and a percussionist audiences can expect a dramatic show, that pushes boundaries, and disrupts our ideas of where instruments traditionally fit in. Two concerts only on 3 & 4 July.
Together with the Standard Bank Jazz Festival, the National Arts Festival 2017 presents Desmond and the Tutus and Opposite the Other in a Double Bill. Desmond and the Tutu’s have been touring their infectious shape-shifting brand of kwela-indie-punk for just on ten years. The band’s latest album Enjoy Yourself won the SAMA for Best Rock Album in 2016. Other highlights on the Jazz stage include Judith Sephuma, James Morrison Quintet (Austraila) Estafest (Netherlands), Michael Pipoquinha (Brazil), Marcus Wyatt’s BOMB SHELTER BEAST, Africa Mkhize and Kyle Shepherd among others.
While front man Sam Burger has, over the past years, established a solid YouTube following with over 200,000 hits, the band Opposite the Other was only founded in late 2015. Since then their star has risen fast. Their performance at Rocking the Daisies 2016 saw them voted one of the Top 20 acts at the festival and their first single Ride Away organically reached the Top 10 on the Spotify Global Viral 50 Chart (peaking at #8). Notably it also made its way into the Top 10 in the US and Top 5 in both Australia and New Zealand.
The double bill with Opposite the Other is on 29 June, whilst Desmond and the Tutus play their own gig on 30 June.
Early bird shows now open for booking can be found at https://www.nationalartsfestival.co.za/events/
