Hellooo!!!
For the good omens ask game :D
Fly ~ queen ~ turtleneck ~ hot chocolate
You're not pulling any punches there!
fly - tell us a secret. shh it's okay we won't tell anyone (except all of tumblr)
When I was in kindergarten, I accidentally puked on the teacher's chair and blamed it on a boy who kept getting sick all day (seeing him was what made me sick in the first place). I'm going to hell, aren't I?
queen - top 5 favorite bands/artists
Tbh that changes a lot over time, but generally: Within Temptation, Spiral Dance, Damh the Bard, Kalafina, Nightwish (both old and new)
turtleneck - show us (or draw) your hottest outfit
I don't think I've had a "hot" outfit for the past decade. I prefer comfy. This one's from 13 years (…and 40kg) ago, but I hope it'll do:
Tumblr media
Yep. I was edgy. No need to tell me ;P
hot chocolate - what's your comfort drink/food?
Food - sushi or ice cream. Drink - actually hot chocolate :D Or matcha latte

favorite thing about them
well you see— (i short circuit and spit out a bunch of images of her. autistically.)
man idek where to begin. she’s 14. she’s just a kid. and she did all that. she’s fucking nuts. she’s a demon. she’s Just Some Guy. she’s gay. she had a transformation from an uwu shy girl to cold dark badass but always did her best to save her friends. she repeated the same month for years without giving up because she had so much love. she acted like she didn’t. but she did. she’s so full of love. so much that it made her fucking nuts. and a demon. she created an entirely new universe so her crush could be happy. she’s just. she makes pipe bombs and uses guns instead of fighting with magic. she
least favorite thing about them
toxic. jk i love that about her
favorite line
yeah
brOTP
i need to see her friendship with mami explored some more
OTP
oh you know. madoka.
nOTP
i’ve never really seen any homura ships other than her and madoka so. idk?
random headcanon
she has so much catholic guilt. so much religious trauma.
unpopular opinion
the ending of rebellion was so good. good for her.
song i associate with them
magia by kalafina
kimi no gin no niwa by kalafina
favorite picture of them
i like demon homura :) the outfit is a bit too sexualized for a 14 year old but otherwise i think she looks rad as hell

I don’t have a working title for this, the original post was obliterated by my shitty internet, but I have a keyboard. So let’s re-type everything I rambled about.
Tumblr media
The original draft, as usual, was made in traditional media. But I kept doing lots of erasures and one hour has since passed so I decided to go with the digital render
Tumblr media
Designing the outfit is definitely one of the hardest parts (as well as getting the eyes right). This one really needed that digital help so I don’t end up erasing a hole though my paper, or just mangling the page too much that every pencil stroke becomes a blur. These are also in different colors so I don’t end up mixing up the body drafts with the outfit and confuse myself. There’s so much details… but I love it.
Tumblr media
The lineart so far! Definitely trying out a different thing with linearts this time? I usually really like really faint or really clean lines. But during my hiatus I found other artist lineart styles and I wanted to try it! So much textures and personality to it, I think. Please pray for me and my neatfreak eyes that I don’t give up on it midway? Please?
Tumblr media
The draft layers—too much for me to count. But I do plan to lessen that main lineart layer so I have more space to work when it comes to the coloring stages.
Finally!! My new artbooks should arrive today if everything goes well. These new ones are more centered on realistic figures and other stuff I didn’t really study because—I’m not an art student? Most of these I can do right now have been self-taught so it’s mostly female figures (for designing purposes) and yes, I can’t draw males for shet, even if I wanted to. Either the torso becomes too short, or too narrow. But don’t put too much pressure on me if the book even tackles it or nah! I’m really just happy to be able to improve on the one thing I love to do, and I prefer to do that on my own comfortable pace. Kudos to you if you read my long ramble! And have a nice day, I hope. A marginally better day, if it’s not been good to you so far.
This song definitely helped me with most of the draft layers. Kalafina is definitely that one artist/group I go to when I need that boost in imagination. Their music really just brings me to places—or at least distracts me enough that I’m able to aimlessly draw details and patterns.
I love them so much. “
Serenato” is definitely that one song that made me become a fan of them, even though my friend introduced me to them with the song, “Oblivious.”
The album [Seventh Heaven] is a whole gem though! Definitely a favorite among all my favorites. Alright, enough of me rambling—
Kudos to you if you read any of this? I hope you have a nice day ahead of you, or a marginally better one if it wasn’t doing so good.

『Kalafina’s All Time Best 』Looks/Outfits Challenge idea
So, I was looking back into some Kala-stuff and in the middle of me admiring some of their different looks, the “Kalafina All Time Best” release announcement came up.
Then I thought, “Hey, maybe we can turn this into something fun” and the idea of this “challenge“ came to mind.
The idea is to choose your all time favourite looks or outfits of each one of the girls. But since choosing just one seems a bit too... impossible, I thought of making it a top 3 for each girl and in different categories:
MV/PV  looks/outfits
Official Live Releases (DVD/BR) looks/outfits
Other live appearences (release & fanclub events, fests, featurings, TV, etc)  looks/outfits
Prints (pamphlets, books, posters, calendars, magazines, etc)  looks/outfits
Casual (interviews, documentaries, blog photos, etc) looks/outfits
If you can post a picture or pictures of it and tell a bit about why you like it, would be great! We could use a tag or something for it like #KalafinaAllTimeBestChallenge, #KalafinaLooksChallenge or anything along those lines... Let me know what you think and if you like the idea, we all could round up the details :D

Kalafina Spring Premium Live Pamphlet/Postcards 2016
It’s mainly because of those insanely beautiful photo shots that I adore these dresses. The postcard set of this concert is amazing and the girls look so great in the dresses.
The Best RED/BLUE Limited Edition Booklet
I hard a really hard time finding out where these outfits were featured (I hope I am correct) xD I just love them here, the corsets are so flattering, the floral design and color choices are great.

Keiko - Harmony Magazine Vol. 1
I just like my blue/black dresses and (except for the shoes *cough*), Keiko looks great.
Wakana - Arena Live Pamphlet
Wakana wears this dress so elegantly, I had to take it.
Hikaru - Red/Blue Day Pamphlet
I don’t really know why I adore Hikaru with those clothes, it’s just a neat design, special but not too much of accessory etc. Another exposed shoulder, so yeeees.

I learned about Kalafina yesterday. Not sure how I managed to evade them since I actually like lots of Yuki Kajiura’s projects/works. I kind of dig the fact their concert outfits look like some adult version of a magical girl group.

We were all dressed in white today! *laughs*😂😂 Just like the other day it's almost as if we purposefully chose matching outfits😂 It's nice to know that we are all on the same wavelenght 🤗 I'm not sure what happened on the second picture (Source)

Kalafina 27 Week Challenge: Week 21 - Favourite Outfits?
I don’t think I can write much about this, so have images. Every one of these outfits is grand and wonderful. I’d probably go with the last shot there with the Christmas dresses as my overall favourite though, they match the girls well and are actually perfect in every way. The band in suits and shirts looks dapper as well.  Follow-ups are probably the 2014 Live, To the Beginning and Consolation sets.

...Blakeworther Wedding.
-First of all, the reason it took me so long to settle down to this prompt (besides multitasking and updating my crossover hell fic) is because I was torn for a moment. Did I want to set this during the Revenge Era, when they’d want to lay low? Or during an AU where they can have a more public affair? What I decided was the former. They wanna get married but doing so in a public space is a REALLY bad idea right now in case Myers drops a nuke on the place or the cops show up with sirens blaring.
-So they spruce up the mansion and create a makeshift “church” space (not really a church but it’s set up like one, with the rows of seating) in the basement.
-Only three humans are invited: Taylor, Winston, Draco. But Draco can ONLY come on the condition that he doesn’t invite Vanora, which he doesn’t agree to, so he’s banned.
-Taylor comes wearing a purple tuxedo with shorts, a ruffle shirt, and a bow tie because this outfit won’t leave my head for some reason and I think it suits them
-Winston just wears his lab coat and some comfy clothes like usual. Literally this is happening in the basement so why should he get all spruced
-The rest of the guests are all Dream Eaters and cyborgs. The Dream Eaters, unbidden, get all dolled up in suits and dresses! They wanna look nice! They then dress up the cyborgs, who really don’t care, but hey, it’s nice that everyone’s formal (except Winston)
-There’s a question at first of who’s going to officiate. It then comes out that...Winston is ordained? He refuses to explain how beyond “Long story.” He’s not even really that religious if at all. Anyway, we got an officiator now. Don’t look the gift horse in the mouth.
-The basement hall is decorated TO THE NINES.
-Before the ceremony even begins, the guys prepare their own wedding dinner. Since there are only five humans in attendance, they can handle their own catering. Fish in savory sauce with capers and so many herbs. Appetizers wrapped in bacon. A cake that’s tea-infused in one tier, lemon in the next, salted caramel at the bottom.
-As for the rest of the guests...there’s a “red meat” buffet. Don’t look too closely at it.
-What will happen is that each pair will meet at the altar and wed each other in three rounds. The third is the “best man” for the other two, so they’re all three best men.
-Vincent wears ALL black this day. It’s almost identical to his favorite suit except his undershirt is black as well.
-Victor wears a bright red tux.
-Albert has pink trousers, a pink vest, a white button-down with pink buttons, no jacket. And a bright pink TOP HAT.
-Flowers all over the place, and of all sorts! (I recently read a Blakeworth fic that had flower language in it and I really love the idea that these three are into it - if you wrote it, it was good but I refrained from commenting because it made me SAAAAD)
-First up at the altar: Vincent/Victor.
-The vows are very deep, heartfelt. About spending eternity together, dying for one another. Being soul mates, knowing they belonged together since day one.
-Second: Victor/Albert.
-Vows consist of “I love that I’m marrying one of my best friends.” Talking about laughs they’ve shared and how they want to keep doing so.
-Third: Albert/Vincent.
-Vows start out as “You always push me to be the best I can be and I SWEAR I won’t let you down.” Then transition into “I also vow to never stop giving you a hard time, you ass.” Then it devolves into a very angry “I LOVE YOU MORE” “NO, I LOVE YOU MORE” (Victor is losing it laughing)
-Wedding rings are carved to look like they have eyeballs with red irises inset. Of course.
-Every time one of the couples kisses, the Dream Eaters hurl rice at them. They...they didn’t take it out of the bag first. They tried
-The cyborgs are just wondering when they get to chow down on something that’s dripping blood
-On to the dinner! The food is excellent, of course.
-Since each is the best man for the other two, each gets to do a toast about the other two as a couple!
-Albert: “Vincent and Victor are one of the purest examples of love I’ve ever seen. They give me hope when the rest of the world is horrible and cold...” Aaaaand he’s crying.
-Vincent: “Albert and Victor are two idiots who belong together so they can share their single brain cell.” Everyone, including Albert and Victor, agrees.
-Victor: “Seriously, even when I loved Vincent, I could see he and Albert wanted to lock lips, so I’m glad they finally stopped being tsundere idiots...for the most part.”
-Taylor takes way, way too much cake because why not? It’s a cake for twenty and there are only five humans here
-To the reception! They have a ballroom cleared out and a sound system set up.
-Victor and Vincent’s first dance is to a really schmaltzy slow song.
-Victor and Albert bop to a rave anthem. There’s grinding; shield your eyes
-Vincent and Albert choose a tango piece that allows them both to showboat while still dancing with each other in a very charged way
-Thiiiiis is where the open bar rolls out. It’s gonna see a lot of use. This party devolves further and further into a three-groom bender as the night goes on.
-By the time they’re all three blackout drunk, Taylor hijacks the sound system and floods the room with emo-pop akin to Fall Out Boy
-While Taylor is being a sneaky DJ, they ask Winston for a request and suddenly we’re...we’re dancing to “Magia” by Kalafina. Might as well work it
-I demand “Mamma Mia” by HUGEL be played at least once during this reception
-Witness as fifty assorted cyborgs and Dream Eaters fail to dance like human people and just look like a bunch of dorks
-It all ends in Winston and Taylor having to carry the passed-out grooms up to their shared bed and tuck them in, then Winston and Taylor retreating to guest rooms to stay the night
-I will spare you the details of the “honeymoon” the trio decides on (in no small part because I suck at all things smut anyway) but rest assured they have...fun

FEATURE: Madoka, Wonder Egg Priority, and the Future of Late-Night Magical Girl Shows
Tumblr media
Beware! This article contains spoilers for the beginning of Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
It is January 21st, 2011. In the shadows of a witch’s labyrinth, two girls named Madoka and Mami form a close bond. Mami is a magical girl, powerful but lonely. Madoka decides, then and there, to fight by Mami’s side. But then, in the middle of combat, the witch Charlotte transforms into a giant worm and bites off Mami’s head. Madoka’s eyes widen in shock. A broken china cup seeps tea on the ground. Smash cut to the wails of goth rock trio Kalafina as black clouds roil and a single flickering shape strides toward oblivion. Three episodes in, Puella Magi Madoka Magica threw down the gauntlet. Over ten years later, the mark it left is still there.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica was special. But why? Not because it was the “first dark magical girl series.” Sailor Moon, the modern magical girl standard-bearer, became popular not just because of its charming characters but because the show could do things like briefly kill everyone during the series finale. Even magical girl series aimed at younger audiences, like Ojamajo Doremi, tackled subjects like the death of a pet or the aftermath of a divorce. Not to mention the infamous 46th episode of Magical Girl Minky Momo from 1983, when the titular heroine was hit by a truck! Truly, everything has been done before.
The secret to Madoka Magica’s success is that it is not really a magical girl show. It is a suspense thriller cunningly disguised as a magical girl show. It has as much in common with Kamen Rider Ryuuki as it has with Sailor Moon, and was written by Gen Urobuchi, a former eroge game writer who ran in the same circles as Kinoko Nasu and Hoshizora Meteo. Madoka Magica is not interested in the slow process of endearment by which magical girl series ease you into the daily routines of their characters — the weekly monsters, transformation stock footage, holidays, and very special episodes. It presents as such only as long as it takes to put you off guard, and then (clad in the gorgeous raiment of art team Gekidan Inu Curry) it goes for your throat.
Tumblr media
So it was that Madoka Magica became the standard-bearer of a new kind of late-night anime. Rather than “cute girls doing cute things,” let’s call this genre “cruel things happening to cute girls.” Take something charming and unassuming, like a magical girl story or a high school slice-of-life show. Populate it with fun, marketable characters. Then set those characters screaming when the real story pops out like a jack-in-the-box. The frisson between cute and scary hopefully generates enough charge to catch the attention of audiences, but  — most importantly  — audiences don’t have to reach that far to engage with it. That is because these shows are built off those same conventions that anime fans are familiar with. Those conventions just happen to be evil this time.
As often happens in the entertainment industry, the success of Madoka spawned many copies. These projects did not have Gen Urobuchi, and they were often not lucky enough to have an art team as singular as Gekidan Inu Curry. All things considered, they tried their best. YUKI YUNA IS A HERO brought a different former eroge game writer, Takahiro, on board. Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka made its team of magical girls a proper military unit. More recently, GRANBELM added giant robots to the stew. I’d say Granbelm is my favorite of these, if only because the giant robots were pretty cool! I’d love to see them in a Super Robot Wars game one day.
Tumblr media
Some of the more interesting entries in the “cruel things happening to cute girls” genre didn’t have any magical girls in them at all. Selector Infected Wixoss was a card battle show about teens fighting for wishes; writer Mari Okada smartly changed focus from the cruel system tearing the characters apart to the way that individual selfishness keeps cruel systems running perpetually. SCHOOL-LIVE! featured a group of schoolgirls continuing their slice of life activities within a world devastated by a zombie apocalypse; the anime production was bolstered by a murderer’s row of writers from Nitroplus, Urobuchi’s former stomping ground. Episode 3 — a flashback to teacher Megumi on the day of the outbreak — is a genuine triumph, precisely because it is so earnest. Rather than pushing hard to shock or disgust the viewer, it allows the characters to breathe in the moments leading to disaster and lets the horror come naturally.
Traditional magical girl shows, in the meantime, have been doing just fine. We’ve seen several good seasons of Precure and two fantastic ones, the all-rounder Go! Princess Precure and uneven but groundbreaking Hugtto! Precure. Sailor Moon’s Crystal remake seasons and movies have steadily improved after a rocky start. The first few seasons of magical idol series Aikatsu are charming and introduce a fun legacy quirk that ties together characters from different seasons. Even Ojamajo Doremi has seen a follow-up film that puts the spotlight on the generation who grew up watching it.
Tumblr media
Madoka’s successors, on the other hand, are in a trickier place. Some of them have been successful, others have been good, but none have recaptured that lightning in a bottle that made Madoka a hit. Even a recent Madoka Magica series based on a phone game, written by Gekidan Inu Curry themselves, came and went without much buzz.
In the years since Madoka aired, there have been plenty of folks who have expressed their reservations about the “cruel things happening to cute girls” genre. After all, magical girl series can be revolutionary or transgressive without being cruel. Hugtto! Precure introduced the series’ first male Precure (equally comfortable wearing dresses as skating outfits) and featured a romantic partnership between two of its female leads. Go! Princess Precure’s best fight scenes are as spectacular as anything in this year’s Jujutsu Kaisen, yet remain perfectly accessible for its target audience of young girls. Madoka's progeny may have been targeted at older — and often, male — audiences, but outside of some blood and gore just a few of these series were more genuinely mature than the children’s series they riffed upon.
Tumblr media
  Image via HiDive
I do still see a future for late-night magical girl shows. In 2016, a weird magical girl series called Flip Flappers aired. Directed by animation wunderkind Kiyotaka Oshiyama, it featured two girls in love traveling through many strange and colorful environments in search of macguffins. Hidden inside a candy coating of marketable elements was everything from the Freudian fairy tale theories of Bruno Bettelheim, to architectural oddities such as thomassons, to occult figures like Jakob von Uexkull. Flip Flappers harnessed some of Madoka Magica’s sense of danger, putting its cast into intense and scary situations from the very first episode. But it was not a show about girls being tortured by an evil system; it was a show about girls exploring surreal dreamscapes. A new genre had been created: “cute girls doing weird things.”
Here are the cornerstones for the “cute girls doing weird things” genre: you need girls of course, maybe even magical girls, but the rules behind their magic are nebulous. Rather than take children’s genres and corrupt them, you build out atmospheric settings, drop in the characters, and see what happens next. You give the cast room to express themselves within the bounds of the story, rather than leading them down an assembly line to their doom. The malevolence of Madoka is not off-limits, but more useful still than malevolence is uncertainty. The goal is to unsettle the viewer rather than disgust them.
Tumblr media
  Image via Funimation
Five years after Flip Flappers, a new show walks these same steps: Wonder Egg Priority, an original series from CloverWorks. Of course, Wonder Egg Priority is aiming at something totally different than Flip Flappers. Its spooky environments are incidental. Its main aim is, through riffing on the work of Kyoto Animation and famed director Naoko Yamada, depicting in full and uncompromising detail the difficult emotional lives of teenage girls living in the modern-day. Those lives just happen to be filtered through an anime lens of trauma manifesting as horrific creatures that have to be destroyed, and girls that need to be saved. Yet to me, Wonder Egg Priority captures the dreamlike atmosphere that Flip Flappers achieved in its best moments — the means by which characters exploring unfamiliar spaces reveal themselves in new and different forms. Despite being made of familiar parts, in execution, I think it is something new.
Somewhere between Flip Flappers and Wonder Egg Priority lies the future of late-night magical girl shows. They should not ever replace the ones made for kids; those do perfectly fine on their own, thank you very much. But in their embrace of uncertainty, I recognize a ghost of what I once felt when I first saw Charlotte’s gaping maw. The sensation that the ground had disappeared, and that — like magic — anything was possible.
What's your favorite recent magical girl show? Are you excited for the newest season of Precure? Does Wonder Egg Priority terrify you on a weekly basis like it terrifies me? Let us know in the comments!
