“Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su” The Fourth Promo

The official website of the television anime Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su (Shangri-La Frontier) revealed a fourth promotional video for the new arc, along with a crucial visual (shown). On October 1 at 5:00 p.m., the anime debuted on its two consecutive cour runs on the 28 affiliated stations of MBS and TBS.

First Impression: Shangri-La Frontier

An…oddly…dressed figure (a face mask and underwear) defeats the dark lord, then attacks the NPC who was cheering him on. It’s Faeria Chronicle Online, also nicknamed Failia for how bad it is. High schooler Rakuro’s hobby is beating bad VR games—”trash games.” Assorted other things happen. His mom collects butterflies and beetles. At school, a girl named Rei tries to talk to him but gets cut off. Shop owner Mana suggests Rakuro try playing an actually good game for once. He launches Shangri-La Frontier and designs a new character: a man with a bird head mask, short shorts, and no other clothes; apparently, he sells all his clothes to buy the best weapons he can, and wears a mask because it would be embarrassing for people to see his face while he goes around mostly naked? #logic He fights some monsters and levels up.

Should You Watch The Anime?

(Speed Run Winter 2024 Edition!)

I watch too many shows a season to really want to dig deep and review all of them, but since we're a few weeks into the Spring 2024 anime season, I figure I can give you a rundown of the Winter 2024 season!

I'm only talking about shows I finished, and maybe only a couple with sentences on my judgement and some flavor text. If you want to know more about my thoughts for a specific anime listed, let me know and maybe's I'll do a full review on it.

So, Should You Watch The Anime?

In no particular order...

Fluffy Paradise (Isekai de Mofumofu Nadende suru Tame ni Ganbattemasu)

No. It's not a bad show, but not really worth the time either - unless you just have to see a little girl petting random animals and monsters.

The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic (Chiyu Mahou no Machigatta Tsukaikata)

Yes, if you like isekai that take their time building things up. Fun premise and fun characters, though it doesn't have a conclusive ending.

Mashle season 2

Yes, though only if you watched season 1 already. Still a lot of dumb shounen fun, but now with the best OP of the year.

7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy! (Loop 7-kaime no Akuyaku Reijou wa, Moto Tekikoku de Jiyuu Kimama na Hanayome Seikatsu wo Mankitsu suru)

Yes, if you're looking for a good romance anime with interesting characters/world. I liked it so much I read all the translated light novels out so far.

Mr. Villain's Day Off (Kyuujitsu no Warumono-san)

Yes, if you're looking for a unique slice of life show. It has chill vibes most of the time, but also some heartfelt stuff. And pandas.

High Card season 2

Not really, even if you watched season 1. They added some weird twists and barely resolve character arcs.

Snack Basue

Maybe, but only if you like kuso-anime and can appreciate assholes as they converse. I laughed at this one more than I thought I would, but it ain't for everyone.

Delusional Monthly Magazine (Gekkan Mousou Kagaku)

No, but it's decent for an anime aimed at a younger audience. Just a little too silly for most of the run, so I couldn't get invested.

Bucchigiri?!

Absolutely Yes if you love dudes that kick each other's asses while feeling like they should be making out with each other instead. This was my favorite show of the season, but I also have unique tastes, lol.

Brave Bang Bravern! (Yuuki Bakuhatsu Bang Bravern)

Maybe, as long as you jive with the main protagonist and don't guess the big twist by episode 3. Guessing the twist so early kind of made the rest of the show a slog. I did want to like this one, but it was just okay in my book.

Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard (30-sai made Doutei dato Mahoutsukai ni Mareru Rashii)

Yes, if you're cool with Boys Love. Despite the absurd premise, the show conveys adult romance fairly well - and the couple actually communicates with each other!

Shangri-La Frontier (Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su)

Yes, especially if you're the type of person who watches Let's Plays. I am that person, so I had a lot of fun watching the progression through the game, especially with the great animation.

No, unless you're really hard up for some sci-fi anime. I wanted to like this one, but it failed on a lot of levels.

What I'm Watching, Fall 2023 Anime Season

New Stuff:

16bit Sensation: Another Layer - I hate making galge in the current industry, so I got sent back in time to the 90s to make galge then. Wacky concept, let's see where they go with this.

Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S-Rank ni Natteta (My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer) - An overpowered fantasy character series, but this time it's heartwarming fun.

Boushoku no Berserk (Berserk of Gluttony) - If Eminence wasn't getting its second season right now, this would be my pick for edgy trash of the season. As it is, I'll enjoy some bottom of the barrel sludge with an overpowered edgy MC and no subtlety.

Bullbuster - Provisionally watchable. You take what you can get with mecha sometimes. This one is about fighting ugly cg giant beasts but also deployment was delayed until liability coverage was confirmed, and further by the broken printer.

Hametsu no Oukoku (The Kingdoms of Ruin) - I'm concerned this will turn into a lot of indulging in violence against women as shock material, but continuing with it for now since the setting raises some potentially interesting questions.

Hoshikuzu Telepath (Stardust Telepath) - Cute girls doing (psychic) friendship things? It's probably nothing, but I'll give it a try.

Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo (The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You) - Now this is garbage! After a double meet cute comes a double confession and double acceptance of same. A shenanigans-type romcom where a poly harem end is supernaturally enforced, and I am here for it.

Konyaku Haki sareta Reijou wo Hirotta Ore ga, Ikenai Koto wo Oshiekomu (I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness) - Not that kind of naughtiness! No ecchi tag! Kinda looking like a nothing show, but I'll give it some more time.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) - This one is starting late, so actually a placeholder for if I get to it later.

Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su (Shangri-La Frontier: Crappy Game Hunter Challenges God-Tier Game) - Another full-dive MMO game, but this time it's about a dude who is just having fun being a minmaxer and speedrunner. No angst, just a side of very light romance. Imagine a show about games also being about having fun!

Sousou no Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) - This one got started fast, so I'm already several episodes deep. Tagged in advance as the likely show of the season, it's a slow and thoughtful show about a near-eternal elf mage learning to understand the fleeting humans in her life. Very much a "vibes" show.

Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari: Dantoudai kara Hajimaru, Hime no Tensei Gyakuten Story (Tearmoon Empire) - We Have Marie Antoinette At Home gets to re-do her life after getting the guillotine. I'll go with it for now, why not.

Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki (A Playthrough of a Certain Dude's VRMMO Life) - Did this trick me into watching a cooking show? Maybe. It's fine I guess.

Undead Unluck - This is excellent. So much fun. David Production was the right studio for an anime where a character climbs buildings by severing his own limbs and use the force of them growing back for propulsion.

Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou. (I'm in Love with the Villainess) - Yuri Villainess? Sure I'll take it. Looks fun.

Sequels

Dead Mount Death Play Part 2 - More of the excellent edgy reverse isekai from earlier this year.

Dr. Stone: New World Part 2 - New World part one shaped up in the second half, so here's hoping they keep that momentum.

Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! 2nd Season (The Eminence in Shadow Season 2) - Yessss. Eminence was the highlight of the excellent Fall 2022 season and I am super ready for more.

Spy x Family Season 2 - Oh boy, time for more Anya antics!

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 3 - More horse girls? Don't mind if I do!

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (2023) - It's Rurouni Kenshin again. Actually nevermind, I'm just not going to continue with this.

Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto (Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead) - This one is mostly done, just keeping track since it ran over a season.

Hall of shame (Shows I dropped after just one episode):

Dekoboko Majo no Oyako Jijou (The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch) - Meme about weird that it happened twice for adopting a daughter you found in the woods. This one is about a 200 year old loli and her 16 year old daughter with giant anime tiddy. Pass.

Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon (The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess) - Dog Days meets Liar Liar? I liked those things, but together, nah.

Bokura no Ameiro Protocol (Protocol: Rain) - Didn't even get through the first episode of this one. Painfully ugly and awkward. If you're going to make a show about a fake esport, make the fake game look good and make the players not play it like shit.

Keikenzumi na Kimi to, Keiken Zero na Ore ga, Otsukiai suru Hanashi. (Our Dating Story: The Experienced You and The Inexperienced Me) - Again dropped halfway through the first episode. Just such a drag. Not worth it for the trash.

Fall 2023 Anime List

Summer season went fast as always, loved them a lot and there was lots of interesting anime. Fall season is on the door, and can't wait to see more anime, and different genres, hopefully able to watch most of the list in the fall season. 29/9

め組の大吾 救国のオレンジ/Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange/Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange Looks intense and interesting, Kenjiro Tsuda is narrating this, and Nakamura Yuichi with Sakura Ayane, Yashiro Taku and Enoki Junya.

 ラグナクリムゾン/Ragna Crimson Have been waiting for this a long time, it looks so great and action scenes were nicely done. Murase Ayumu with Kobayashi Chiaki is great pair so looking forward to hear them. Also Suwabe Junichi is there.  オーバーテイク！/Overtake! Racing anime, which is first for me. PV looked great, and can't wait to see this one, Konishi Katsuyuki is main character's voice, have started to like his work the more I hear him. Also Hatanaka Tasuku is singing ED.  シャングリラ・フロンティア～クソゲーハンター、神ゲーに挑まんとす～/Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su/ Shangri-La Frontier Uchida Yuuma being main character's voice actor, so it's always nice to hear him, and story as well as animation style looked interesting, Sunraku playing VR game and getting know to the world inside it.

MFゴースト/MF Ghost Second racing anime of the season, so I'm being fed good. This one has great cast, Uchida Yuuma voicing main character, and Sakura Ayane voicing Saionji Ren. Animation style looked nice, and racing parts intense.  鴨乃橋ロンの禁断推理/Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri/Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective One of the season's anime I have been waiting eagerly, PV looked great, and intense with the murder mysteries. Ron (Azakami Youhei) looks so hot. UNISON SQUARE GARDEN is singing OP, so looking forward to hear their song again. ミギとダリ/Migi to Dali/Migi & Dali Story is interesting, also animation style is looking nice and can't wait to see this. Cast is great, Murase Ayumu and Shun Horie with Takeuchi Shunsuke and Asanuma Shintarou. とあるおっさんのVRMMO活動記/Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki/A Certain Middle-Aged Man's VRMMO Activity Log Also game anime,  VRMMO game. Looks nice, colorful and funny, Ishikawa Kaito is Earth, main caharcter's voice actor. Can't wait to see this, and hear Ishikawa.

 聖女の魔力は万能です Season2/Seijo no Maryoku wa Bannou desu 2nd Season/The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent Season 2 Yay, 2nd season. Have been waiting this since the first season was over. Also see Hawke and Drewes once again. 東京リベンジャーズ 天竺編/Tokyo Revengers: Tenjiku-hen 3rd season of Tokyo Revengers, haven't seen 2nd season yet so probably have to watch this later.  Paradox Live THE ANIMATION Music anime, so curious to see this although haven't been following their music or other stuff they have already published.

婚約破棄された令嬢を拾った俺が、イケナイことを教え込む/Konyaku Haki sareta Reijou wo Hirotta Ore ga, Ikenai Koto wo Oshiekomu PV was hilarious and funny, so eagerly waiting to see this. Demon Lord -he's hot - teaching all the bad habits to a girl.

暴食のベルセルク/Boushoku no Berserk/Berserk of Gluttony PV was backed with action and animation style was great with beautiful scenes. So curious to see this anime, and Oosaka Ryouta with Seki Tomokazu being in the cast. 柚木さんちの四兄弟。/Yuzuki-san Chi no Yonkyoudai. This is going to be most precious and emotional anime as PV was so good, and loved Yuzuki's brothers relationships so much with each other. Especially the youngest is so cute.  ビックリメン/Bikkurimen Not sure about this one but I'm curious to see stickers' battles.

アンダーニンジャ/Under Ninja Ninja anime, looked interesting. Ban Taito being main character's voice. 冒険者になりたいと都に出て行った娘がSランクになってた/Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S-Rank ni Natteta/My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer Suwabe Junichi is in the cast, also Hayami Saori whom voice I have started to love so much, and story is a bit different than usually, so excited for this one too.

 新しい上司はど天然/Atarashii Joushi wa Do Tennen/ My New Boss Is Goofy This is going to be so cute, PV was funny and sweet, especially Hakuto kitty. Great cast; Umehara Yuuichirou, Nishiyama Koutarou, Shimono Hiro, Sugita Tomokazu and Fukuyama Jun. アンデッドアンラック/Undead Unluck Supernatural anime with bizzare powers of the characters. Unlucky girl and immortal boy who get know to each other. Nakamura Yuichi is voicing Andy, and mysterious group is full of nice voice actors. はめつのおうこく/Hametsu no Oukoku/The Kingdoms of Ruin Ishikawa Kaito and Sato Hinoshi in the cast. Story sounds interesting, and Who-ya Extended is singing ED so can't wait to hear it.  ゴブリンスレイヤーⅡ/Goblin Slayer II Finally 2nd season of Goblin Slayer!!! Can't wait to see them again, and of course Umehara Yuuichirou voicing Goblin Slayer, and hear his deep and honeyed voice. 最果てのパラディン 鉄錆の山の王/Saihate no Paladin: Tetsusabi no Yama no Ou/The Faraway Paladin Season 2 2nd season of Faraway Paladin, so excited to see them again, especially Will and Menel. This season's story/arc looks interesting and lots of new characters to meet.  SPY×FAMILY Season 2 Seeing Loid, Yor and Anya again, eagerly waiting new season and the movie later.

僕らの雨いろプロトコル/Bokura no Ameiro Protocol/Our Rainy Protocol E-sports anime, so interesting to see this kind of anime, and PV looked nice. Also Kimura Ryouhei voicing Sendou Akito.  豚のレバーは加熱しろ/Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro/Heat the Pig Liver: The Story of a Man Turned Into a Pig This is rather eccentric story, man turned into a pig who travels with the girl. Matsuoka Yoshitsugu is voicing the pig. 帰還者の魔法は特別です/Kikansha no Mahou wa Tokubetsu desu/ A Returner's Magic Should Be Special Korean web manga, and PV was great, it's nice to see time travelling anime. So curious to see this how it goes. Terashima Takuma is voicing MC.  ティアムーン帝国物語～断頭台から始まる、姫の転生逆転ストーリー～/Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari: Dantoudai kara Hajimaru, Hime no Tensei Gyakuten Story/Tearmoon Empire This is cute one, also time travel anime. The cast is great; Uesaka Sumire, Umehara Yuuichirou, Furukawa Makoto, Matsuoka Yoshitsugu and Masuda Toshiki. 黙示録の四騎士/Nanatsu no Taizai: Mokushiroku no Yonkishi/The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse Animation style is different but looks good, so curious to see this. 君のことが大大大大大好きな100人の彼女/Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo/The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You Quite interesting story, and cast is nice, so curious how this will turn out.

ドッグシグナル/Dog Signal Excited to see this anime, it sounds great and cute. KENN and Ono Kensho is in the cast so glad to hear them. 薬屋のひとりごと/Kusuriya no Hitorigoto/ The Apothecary Diaries PV was so beautiful, and Jinshi (Ootsuka Takeo) is so hot. Also Mao Mao (Yuuki Aoi) is cute and glad to hear her once again some more.

I have been hard core loving this anime right now. Something about it is just hitting so right. This anime is about Hizutome who basically only plays trash games. Garbage games are his reason for living, and it is because of his love of garbage that he is so OP at games. So, when he starts playing Shangri-La Frontier, a beautifully composed game of awesomeness, Hizutome realizes something important: sometimes it is nice to play games that aren’t trash. But he is also an obsessive completionist, so we'll see how he fairs trying to complete this massive game.

Damas y caballeros fue un placer ver este anime con ustedes. Pues se nos va esta joya y he de decir que estuvo bueno el anime la historia no es la mas original que hayamos visto pero el desarrollo esta bueno la verdad me dejo intrigado ahora hay que esperar a su segunda temporada o ver el manga una de dos. La calificación que le doy es 10/10. La calificación de critica seria 10/10 ya que su historia se a visto en otros animes pero se están discutiendo en el desarrollo eso me alegra se aleja mucho de esos animes clichés que vemos todo el tiempo anime que recomiendo si o si y mas si te gusta el genero acción. Theo thông báo vào ngày 8 tháng 7, NetMarble đã quyết định phát triển một trò chơi dựa trên bộ anime Shangri-La-Frontier. Trò chơi mà Netmarble phát triển có thể sẽ là Nexus of the Seven Knights.

Theo ông Han Ji-Hoon - Giám đốc Nhóm Kinh doanh của Netmarble nhận xét: "Shangri-La-Frontier hiện đang được chú ý tại Nhật Bản. Có tiềm năng phát triển rất lớn, Netmarble đã quyết định sử dụng nó để làm nên một siêu phẩm với tham vọng của sự phát triển toàn cầu ”.
