Drama Review: Recipe for Farewell

I just recently finished watching this wonderful drama and thought I’d write some of my thoughts about it. The story is about Chang-Wook (Han Suk-Kyu) who works as a translator and humanities instructor and his wife Da-Jung (Kim Seo-Hyung) who suffers from terminal bowel cancer. Da-Jung asks him to cook for her every day and although Chang-Wook doesn’t cook, he followed recipes and picked fresh food and the best ingredients for his ill wife.

This tells a story about a man who loved his wife despite their differences and stayed beside her to take care of her.

I really loved how Han Suk-Kyu made dialogues in this drama. I’ve watched him in Dr. Romantic 1 & 2, and loved his performance. I loved how this drama was able to convey each of the characters’ emotions, flaws, and faults as well as their softness and vulnerability. Through the episodes, it showed how his skills in cooking got well and over time he didn’t need the help of a recipe. He also logged his cooking in his blog.

I think it was just okay to give Kang Jae-Ho (Jin Ho-Eun) a bit of a story in this drama and it could work too, without it. Though I think they did it to show how it will affect his life after the passing of his mother and showed that there are a lot of people who are there for him to help.

I’ve watched Kim Seo-Hyung in Mine and really loved her acting and I was surprised in her performance here. It’s nothing heavy but she portrayed her character really well.

What got me in to my feels was when they took a family picture for the first time and hang it on the living room. It made the place feel alive. I just realized that we also didn’t have a nice family photo in our house so one of the things on my wish list is to get our family photo taken at a studio and hang it in our living room.

This is a slice of life drama and is based on a true story. It’s nice to watch something that is close/connected to reality. It was beautifully wrapped up.
