NICER offre une vue inédite sur un pulsar milliseconde

Pour la première fois, des astrophysiciens ont pu mesurer précisément la masse et la taille d'une étoile à neutrons, un pulsar nommé PSR J0030+0451 (ou PSR J0030), grâce au télescope NICER (Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer) installé sur l'ISS. Leurs observations ont également permis d'identifier des points chauds présents à la surface de l'étoile à neutrons. Six études de plusieurs équipes qui ont toutes été publiées dans un cahier spécial de The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Le pulsar PSR J0030+0451 se trouve dans une région assez isolée, à 1174 années-lumière. Il a une période de rotation sur lui-même de 4,87 millisecondes (205 tours par seconde). NICER est dédié à la détection de rayons X résolue en temps, il est donc tout à fait adapté à l'observation de l'émission de rayons X associée aux pulsars en rotation rapide.

Depuis des décennies, les astrophysiciens essayent de comprendre comment fonctionnent les pulsars. Dans le modèle le plus simple, un pulsar possède un champ magnétique très puissant qui peut arracher des particules de la surface de l'étoile à neutrons et les accélérer. Certaines particules suivent les lignes de champ magnétique en s'enroulant autour et vont frapper la surface de l'étoile à neutrons sur la face opposée au niveau de l'autre pôle magnétique. Elles doivent alors produire un échauffement intense de la surface au niveau des pôles magnétiques, un échauffement qui va se traduire par une émission de rayons X sur une surface relativement réduite, ressemblant à un ou plusieurs "points chauds". En fait toute l'étoile à neutrons brille un peu en rayons X mais les points chauds doivent être beaucoup plus lumineux que le reste de la surface. Comme l'étoile à neutrons tourne rapidement sur elle-même, les points chauds sont vus en mouvement incessant, apparaissant et disparaissant à la fréquence de rotation du pulsar. C'est ce qu'observe NICER.

Avec les données acquises sur PSR J0030 entre juillet 2017 et décembre 2018, deux équipes indépendantes ont cartographié les points chauds visibles en rayons X sur la surface du pulsar. Ils en déduisent la masse ainsi que le diamètre du pulsar. 

L'équipe de Thomas Riley (Université d'Amsterdam) trouve une masse de 1,3 masses solaires et un diamètre de 25,4 km, tandis que l'équipe de Cole Miller (Université du Maryland) trouve une masse de 1,4 masses solaires et un diamètre de 26 km. 

Les valeurs sont donc convergentes et permettent de mieux connaître l'équation d'état des pulsars de ce type, c'est à dire les lois physiques qui régissent la structure interne de ces astres extrêmes (pression, température, densité, ...).  Un pulsar est si dense qu'il déforme l'espace-temps à son voisinage. L'espace-temps est si distordu que les photons émis sur la face opposée (qu'on ne "voit pas") sont fortement déviés et peuvent être redirigés dans notre ligne de visée. Cet effet relativiste fait simplement apparaître l'étoile à neutrons plus grosse qu'elle n'est en réalité. L'effet implique également que les points chauds peuvent ne jamais vraiment disparaître de notre vue lorsqu'ils se retrouvent sur la face cachée (opposée). NICER est à même de mesurer ces effets avec les plus grands détails, sa résolution temporelle est de l'ordre de 100 nanosecondes seulement, une performance inégalée pour un tel télescope X.

Les deux équipes d'astrophysiciens ont trouvé plusieurs points chauds situés dans l'hémisphère sud de l'étoile à neutrons alors que nous la voyons par son hémisphère nord. Il s'attendaient à n'en voir qu'un seul... Pour arriver à ce résultat, les astrophysiciens ont dû faire tourner des grosses simulations sur un superordinateur muni de plusieurs milliers de coeurs. L'équipe de Riley trouve deux points chauds : un de forme circulaire et l'autre en forme de croissant. Le groupe de Miller, lui, trouve deux solutions possibles : une solution à deux points chauds circulaires et une solution à trois points chauds.

C'est la toute première fois que l'on parvient à imager le nombre, la forme et la taille de points chauds d'émission de rayons X à la surface d'un pulsar. Les chercheurs ont encore du mal à expliquer le nombre et la forme des points chauds détectés, mais ce qu'ils en déduisent les uns comme les autres, c'est que les champs magnétiques de PSR J0030 sont plus complexes que le modèle traditionnel d'un système magnétique dipolaire.

De nouvelles observations vont être nécessaires pour approfondir le phénomène des points chauds à la surface des étoiles à neutrons. Or, une étude parallèle effectuée avec NICER toujours, est publiée dans le même cahier spécial que les études sur PSR J0030, et elle indique la détection de 5 pulsars millisecondes par leurs rayons X pulsés dont l'émission ressemble fortement à des points chauds de surface. Ce seront donc des cibles de choix pour de futures observations détaillées du type de celles effectuées sur PSR J0030, ouvrant la possibilité d'une meilleure compréhension des champs magnétiques des pulsars millisecondes et de leur équation d'état via la mesure de leurs caractéristiques masse/taille. Cette étude menée par le français Sébastien Guillot (IRAP, Toulouse) montre par ailleurs une petite étrangeté dans 3 des 5 pulsars analysés : un décalage de phase significatif entre la pulsation X et la pulsation radio du pulsar...

B.C. cities join global movement asking oil companies for climate change costs

Staff and contractors in Victoria have been crunching the numbers on climate change costs for the coastal city and it’s not looking good, the mayor says.

Lisa Helps says based on a report commissioned by the regional government in 2015, storm surges combined with a one-metre rise in sea level — which is projected by the year 2100 — could result in business disruption losses of $415,557 per day.

Victoria was one of the first municipalities in British Columbia to pen a letter to oil and gas companies last year asking them to chip in to cover growing bills in proportion to their emissions.

It is joining local governments around the world in seeking some relief.

“We’re actively working through our climate leadership plan to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, but in the interim there are real costs to taxpayers,” Helps said in an interview.

“It’s pretty fair to say ‘You caused this, you need to help us mitigate the cost,’ even as we all — energy companies and cities — work toward a renewable energy future.”

West Coast Environmental Law, which has driven the campaign in B.C., says 16 local councils have voted to write letters to fossil fuel companies. The most recent was West Vancouver, which voted last week.

“It’s been increasing in momentum,” said Andrew Gage, the organization’s staff lawyer.

It’s not about handing the entire bill to fossil fuel producers, but seeking a reasonable contribution relative to a company’s pollution, he said.

“No one is saying the individual consumer bears no responsibility, it’s a question of what the relative responsibility is,” he said.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers declined comment, saying that since the letters are sent directly to companies, it considers the issue “company specific.” Shell and Exxon Mobil, two of the largest oil companies in the world, did not respond to requests for comment.

The campaign has largely flown under the radar until recently when the resort town of Whistler in B.C. drew the ire of Alberta for sending one of the letters to Calgary-based oilsands giant Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.

Last weekend, Alberta’s economic development and trade minister, Deron Bilous, took a dig at Whistler Mayor Jack Crompton while speaking at a pro-oil rally in Grand Prairie.

“The people of Whistler need to tell the truth: that they are using Alberta gas for their cars, for their petrochemical products, and they’re using our oil and it’s time to smarten up,” he told the rally.

Crompton apologized in a Facebook video last week.

Governments in other parts of the world are trying different tactics.

Several cities in the United States, including New York and San Francisco, have tried unsuccessfully to sue major oil companies over climate change.

In the Philippines, the Commission on Human Rights has an ongoing investigation into a complaint filed against 47 coal, oil, gas and cement companies.

Greenpeace says it’s the world’s first human rights investigation into corporate responsibility for climate change and was launched in response to complaints from typhoon survivors, advocates and community groups.

While there’s no monetary element to the investigation, Greenpeace said it could set a precedent for other legal cases relating to climate change liability.

In Ontario, the legislature has twice debated a private member’s bill intended to clarify the rules around suing fossil fuel companies. The bill was killed by the Progressive Conservative government under Premier Doug Ford.

Greenpeace Canada said it’s working on a tool kit for local governments considering launching a legal challenge to fossil fuel companies similar to those in the United States.

“We’ll be encouraging cities across the country, and I’ll personally ask the City of Toronto, to launch this kind of a case,” said Keith Stewart, senior energy strategist at Greenpeace Canada.

Stewart pointed to a city staff report that found between 2000 and 2012, Toronto experienced three one-in-100-year rain storms and it said the city would continue to experience extreme weather events.

“This wave of climate lawsuits, which have just picked up speed in the last couple of years, is not going to go away,” Stewart said.

Whether the letter writing campaign will be effective beyond raising awareness has yet to be seen.

Since Victoria sent 19 letters to the largest fossil fuel companies in the world, none of which Helps said were Canadian, it has received only one response.

Shell Canada responded on behalf of Royal Dutch Shell in a letter that did not commit to any payment but highlighted the companies support for emissions goals as outlined in the Paris Agreement and “billions of dollars” it has invested in low carbon and renewable energies.

It also highlighted its Quest project, launched in Edmonton in 2015, as an example, saying it reduces carbon dioxide emissions from oil sands operations by more than one million tonnes per year.

“These are a few examples of the actions we are taking today, recognizing that the global energy transition will span decades, moving at different paces and producing different outcomes in different countries depending on local factors,” says the letter signed by president Michael Crothers.

“We welcome efforts toward constructive, collaborative action as we collectively attempt to address this complex global challenge.”
