On February 1st 1329, Sir James Douglas bestowed land and money to Newbattle Abbey before he left for with The Bruce’s heart for the Holy Land.
The Good Sir must have known it was a dangerous journey he was going to undertake, he gave the land so that each year a mass would be sung for St Bride and 13 poor people would be fed so the saint would intercede with God for his immortal soul.
In the 1849 book Registrum S. Marie de Neubotle the story is told as such:
On St. Bride’s day, or the 1st of February, in the end of the year 1329, at the park of Douglas, the “good Sir James of Douglas,” being then about to depart for the Holy Land with the heart of his royal master, bestowed on the monastery of Newbattle his half of the land of Kilmad, the other half of which it already possessed by gift of Roger de Quinci; while the monks, on their part, became bound to sing a mass at St. Bridget’s altar within their abbey church on the feast of St. Bridget, yearly for evermore, and to feed thirteen poor folk, that the saint might make special intercession with God for the weal of the good knight.
If you are wondering why it says “in the end of the year 1329” it is because we were still using the Julian calendar back then, the New Year began on March 25th.
Of course most of you will know that Douglas only made it to Spain, landing at Santander where a stone, now lost, recalled the hero ‘El Duglas’. Douglas and the Scots joined King Alfonso XI of Castile in his war against the Sultan of Granada, Muhammed IV.
In Castile an English knight marvelled at Douglas’s unscarred face - he expected the famed warrior to be covered in battle scars, as he himself was. Douglas replied, ‘God be praised, I always had my hands to defend my head.’
On August 30th 1330 Douglas alongside several Scots, including Simon Lockhart of Lee, William Keith, Robert Logan of Restalrig and Walter Logan, William Borthwick, Kenneth Moir, William St Clair of Rosslyn and John St Clair, charged into battle against The Moors at The Battle of Teba, Douglas and the Scots knights died at Teba.
James’s body was found by the silver casket. Muhammed IV had the bodies of the Scots sent with guard of honour to King Alfonso. The surviving Scots, Sir William Keith and Sir Simon Lockhart, cut out their friends’ hearts and boiled their bodies down in a cauldron. They took the knights’ bones and hearts back to Scotland. You may have seen artwork of James throwing the heart ahead of him, this is just artistic licence, he would not be expecting to die, and the casket would most definitely have remained around his neck, as seen in the statue in the second pic, which is on The National Portrait gallery wall in Edinburgh.
It was after Teba that the Douglas Arms were changed, the heart being added to show his devotion to The Bruce.

BZZT! ROTOM POSTING!
[ Attatchment: A video. In a place that seems to be underground, Kaita with her hand on her hips, staring at a ranger in a cage.
“Keith, is that you?”
The ranger looks up, squints, and says. “Kaita?? What on Earth are you doing here??”
Kaita sets to work trying to open the cage. She is visibly relieved. She smirks. “Saving your ass, aparently.”
The ranger’s-Keith’s-eyes widen. “Did Miss goodie-two-shoes-Kaita just swear?”
“Shut up.” Kaita says, rolling her eyes. Finally, she gets the cage door open, walking inside.
“Besides, I don’t need saving.” Keith continues, “I’m doing totally fine!” He tries to stand, puts weight on one foot, and yelps, falling back down with a thud.
“Yeah, you look fine.” Kaita teases, but her face is back to looking concerned. She walks over to him, kneeling down and wrapping his arm around her shoulders. “C’mon, let’s get you up.”
They manage to get Keith standing, though he’s obviously in pain. “Seriously, what are you doing here? I thought you got assigned somewhere in Almia.” Keith asks.
“My first mission was to provide back up here in Reborn.” Kaita says, then pauses. “Actually, no. My first mission was to help a rampaging Turtwig who’d lost his peanut butter snacks. But that one was so small it barely counts.”
Keith snorts. “Sounds like a great time.”
“How are you liking Reborn, then?” Kaita asks.
Keith sighs. “The other guys at the station keep telling me it’s not usually like this. But honestly? From what I’ve seen it’s not much to write home about, even on its best day.”
Nodding, Kaita helps him over a rock. “Tell me about it. My train crashed as soon as we got here.”
Keith’s eyes widen once again. “You were apart of the train crash?”
“Yeah. Blake and I both were. But we’re okay, though one of Blake’s pokemon is missing. You remember Blake, right?”
“How could I forget? You’d turn on their champion matches every Saturday.”
Kaita smiles fondly. “I miss those days.”
Keith rolls his eyes. “I don’t. You always hogged the TV and I never got to watch Saturday morning cartoons.”
Kaita laughs. For a few seconds after, they’re silent as they walk, until Keith spots something on Kaita’s belt.
“Kaita. Lockhart.” Keith says, feigning shock, “Is that a pokemon on your belt??”
Kaita smiles sheepishly. “Three, actually. The ranger station made me get at least one for this mission, and the other two just followed.”
“I never thought I’d see the day.” Keith says, “I remember you adamantly refusing to keep a Pokémon for more than ten minutes back at school.”
“I know, I know. But it was time. I…” Kaita’s free hand goes to thumb her necklace.
It’s silent for another moment. Finally, Keith speaks once more. “It’s okay. She’d want you to, y’know?”
Kaita blinks several times, nodding. “Y-yeah. I know.”
“You should introduce them to me, when you get the chance.” Keith says.
Suddenly, a huge roar cuts them off. The cave shakes intensely. Kaita’s hand immediately goes to her belt.
“We might get that chance sooner than you think.”

The inspiration for Sam's hopeless performance on White House history too the children may have been Joe Lockhart who told the Chicago Tribune: 'Having to [give tours] on a regular basis, and frankly not knowing is that room was banned after Teddy Roosevelt or Franklin Roosevelt, I'm pathetic. I haven't gotten caught yet, but I've made up a few things.' Asked, subsequently, about the series, Lockhart noted, 'In the premiere I saw a little bit of myself in the absolute look of disdain on CJ's face when a dumb question was asked. You can't learn that: you have it naturally.'

Tumblr media
Male R&B singers emerged at this critical juncture in the history of music, establishing its own identity. These performers are well known for their incredible vocal abilities, often fusing soul, hip-hop, jazz, and blues into their sets. But R&B singers male have evolved throughout time as experts combine more contemporary sounds with older renditions to generate new takes on this musical style.
What Is R&B Music?
Known by its common name, rhythm and blues music (R&B), African Americans resided in cities like Harlem and Detroit throughout the 20th century, which is where this American musical genre developed. Pop, gospel, blues, and jazz are all mixed together in the distinctive vocal arrangements and production methods that define R&B.
From groundbreaking performers like Curtis Mayfield, who transcend genre boundaries to become a superstar and inspire upcoming generations of musicians to follow in their footsteps, to legendary pioneers like Ray Charles and Lionel Richie, this list honors some of the greatest voices in male R&B music.
Stevland Hardaway Judkins
Born on May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan, Stevie Wonder demonstrated musical skill at an early age. Regretfully, the aging process had an unforeseen effect on his voice, which put a stop to his musical career. After enrolling in piano classes at the University of Michigan School for the Blind, he resumed playing it, and with the publication of "Uptight," he solidified his status as "Stevie Wonder." Paula, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Wonder, 1965, and Patanother's popular songs.
Marvin Gaye
Throughout his two decades of recording, which started in the Motown and R&B music scenes and eventually spread to other continents with records that are still in demand today, Marvin Gaye Productions Inc. remained one of the most well-known singer-songwriters and record producers in America. Sadly, on April 1, 1984, he passed suddenly, but not before leaving behind an enormous musical legacy that will never fades.
Keith Lockhart issued Record 1 (listed below). Among the well-known Lockhart songs were Let's Get It On (Jan 1973), United (Dec 1967), Live at London Palladium (1977), and several others.
The following artists received awards for Lockhart: 1971 | What's Going On | 1968 | You're All I Need | Winner of the 1988 NAACP Image Award and inductee into the Hall of Fame; 1971 NAACP Image Award for Album; and 1983 Grammy Award for Male R&B Vocal Performance (inducted into the Hall of Fame).
Lionel Brockman Richie Jr
Artist renowned for his versatility as a gifted musician, songwriter, record producer, and media personality. Modern male R&B performers still find great memories in Richie's sorrowful pop tunes and love ballads, which he skillfully infused with elements of funk soul, rhythm and blues, and other genres.
Among the well-known songs he has written are We Are the World (1985), Hello Can't Slow Down (1983), Endless Love (1981), Say You Say Me (1986), and Three Times a Lady Natural High (1986).
The Commodores enjoyed success in 1977, as seen by their subsequent Song of the Year (86) victory. He also received the Icon Award at the 2022 American Music Awards.
Michael Joseph Jackson
Michael Jackson, over his 20-year reign as the "King of Pop," revolutionized the music production business with the help of his innovative team of musicians, songwriters, dancers, and humanitarians. His legacy endures today, and his impact on its advancement and growth throughout this period was immense!
"Billie Jean" and "Beat It-Thriller" from Phar Rehmas' 1982 albums Megamix and Beat It Thriller are popular tunes; in 1991, "Heal the World/Remember The Time/Will You Be There/Heal the World" received the BMI Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals (1996, 1993).
Steve Lacy of Steve Lacy Realty Services
The song "Bad Habit," which has unusual chord progressions and a strong emotional core, gained worldwide recognition after it was added to internet streaming platforms like Spotify and Pandora in January 2013. Nomination for the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album in 2023; 2022 Artist of the Year International Best R&B/Soul Video 2023 UK Music Video Awards.
Prince Rogers Nelson
June 7, 1958, saw the birth of this well-known singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He became well-known for fusing pop, R&B, and Funk Rock Pop into a distinctive sound that still has an impact on the music business today. He achieved international fame with two singles, including "Kiss," "When Doves Cry," and "Purple Rain." In addition, he left a treasured legacy that endures to this day.
Ralph Edward Tresvant
Most well-known for being the main vocalist for the R&B group New Edition before leaving the group to go solo and make way for Ralph Tresvant. He is currently popular as an American musician and songwriter, and his amazing talents and musical abilities never cease to captivate listeners. He held their attention during New Edition's 40-year existence and final dissolution! His greatest accomplishment was entertaining large audiences!
Aaron Robin Hall
First rose to fame through Guy, a well-known R&B and contemporary jack swing group that Teddy Riley, Damion, and Timmy Gatling formed in 1988. Furthermore, Aaron made a name for himself with solo albums like 1993's "The Truth," which at the time made him a very well-known figure among male R&B performers.
Teddy Riley of Blackstreet's Modern Jack
The American artist Edward Theodore Riley is credited with creating the R&B/hip hop hybrid genre known as "swing" in 1991. Riley left Guy and Blackstreet's bands in late 1991 to form his own. Riley co-founded Guy's musical ensembles. This ultimately led to the development of the present contemporary Jack swing, also known as modern Jack sway.
Jason "Jase" of Soul For Real is one of several soul singers available through Soul For Real's roster of performers.
Jason, real name Oliver Dalyrimple, was once well-known as Jase4Real, and he remains a prominent player in the R&B music scene. Part of Soul For Real and the man behind their most recent hit song, "Love Again," Jase's early 2016 solo album release solidified his place in the R&B music industry.
Conclusion
Rhythm and Blues" is how R&B is pronounced in its entirety. It's also frequently shortened to R&B or R'n'B. In the 1940s, African-American communities gave rise to this musical subgenre. The popular music of the post-World War II era, together with elements of gospel, blues, jazz, and other influences, are blended with a robust backbeat to produce R&B.

I had a really good reading month, both in terms of quantity and quality. I actually ended up doing 30 in 30. Sometimes a switch just flips in my brain that lets me read faster than usual, but it also helps that about half of these were under 200 pages.

If you are wondering why it says “in the end of the year 1329” it is because we were still using the Julian calendar back then, the New Year began on March 25th.
The pic shows a statue of Sir James Douglas on The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, not the chain and casket around his neck, which contained the heart of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots. The surviving Scots, Sir William Keith and Sir Simon Lockhart, cut out their friends’ hearts and boiled their bodies down in a cauldron. They took the knights’ bones and hearts back to Scotland.
The illustrations are from the hand of Andrew Spratt of how the Abbey may have looked back then, the interior pic is probably the oldest surviving  part of the building, down in the vaults, a place I must get round to visiting, maybe this year.
