Oblivion Battery Episode 10 Review - Vs. Hikawa High
I had a feeling Kei would revert back to his amnesiac self. It’s unfortunate that he had to change back so quick. It makes me wonder if it really was hypnotism that caused the Commander to return or if it was overexertion of his body after what Haruka said last episode about how Kei was accompanying him on his training regime. I’m unsure if this show will get a season 2 because if it ends in just 12 episodes, the cause of Kei’s amnesia and his reversion to his commander self will never explained.
Tumblr media
I do feel like Kotesashi will win the practice game with Hikawa High. I just have this feeling that it’s going to happen. It’s because they got more training and that their key players have improved a lot. I haven’t watched a lot of baseball anime, but the sport is a lot more strategic than I remembered. Since Kotesashi is full of strategists, that is the reason why I believe they’ll win. Some highlights of the match so far is Yamada hitting a ball. It was nice to see him confident and excited. It was also nice to see the genius battery doing their thing too!
Also, I want them to win just for the sole reason to rub it in Makita’s face. I don’t really like Makita. I don’t know why, but he just rubs me the wrong way. He’s like a cockier, louder version of Haruka. I also don’t like that he’s mean to Shunpei. Shunpei is another one of my favorites in this anime, so anyone who’s mean to him will have to answer to me! Also, Makita really likes to gloat a lot. He gloated about how he got taller and gained a few pounds while Shunpei remained the same. He’s voiced by Mark Ishii, who’s known for voicing Lev Haiba from Haikyuu. I haven’t heard him in a new role for a very long time. Surprisingly, this role fits him. Although I don’t like Makita, I do like how he’s the butt of the gags in this episode from nobody getting his rather simple surname correct to being called a gorilla and stupid by his fellow teammate.
Another new character appears. He is Kirishima. He’s a sneaky guy who also happens to be the ace of Hikawa. However, he’s not playing in the practice match. His white hair, snake-like face and his body demeanor oozes crafty. He really likes to mess around with Makita and calls him a gorilla whenever he can. He’d definitely someone to watch out for, even if he’s not playing. Also, I feel like Kengo Kawanishi is having a blast playing characters that need a Kansai dialect. He did it with Tsugeura from Wind Breaker and now with Kirishima. It’s also amazing how different Tsugeura and Kirishima sound. When he voices Kirishima, it sounds like a lower pitched version of Akira Ishida’s voice. He’s super talented, honestly.
Next episode seems to be about Shunpei’s past and I honestly can’t wait. Aoi and Shunpei have been flip-flopping on who I like better. If I learn about Shunpei’s past, maybe I’ll bump him up to first place. What are your thoughts on this episode?

NJPW 50th Anniversary Show - 3/1/2022: Loads of Legends Appear For Celebratory Extravaganza; Kota Ibushi, Hiroyoshi Tenzan Out of Anniversary and New Japan Cup
Tumblr media
New Japan Pro Wrestling
Today was the 50th Anniversary event for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Although the actual date of the debut show was 3/6/1972, it’s not always strictly observed on that day. Nevertheless, it’s a long time for a pro wrestling company to be around (and it won’t be the only Japanese company observing that milestone, as All Japan Pro Wrestling is 50 this year as well). Through three ownerships and countless changing winds for the business, NJPW has weathered the storms, even during periods where it did not look like they would. Congratulations to them.
It was announced yesterday that neither Kota Ibushi nor Hiroyoshi Tenzan would be on this show, or in the New Japan Cup after all. Tenzan’s knee injury is still bothering him so that will pull him out. With that, the winner of Toru Yano v. Taichi will get a bye into the third round on forfeit. With Ibushi, it seemed like he was going to make it, but ultimately it was determined he would not be as fit as he should be given the nature of his injury. Ibushi is 39, he is not getting any younger. We may be seeing a decline in his ability to wrestle regularly at this stage, however as this show will prove, there are those far older who are still giving it a go. Great O-Khan now gets a forfeit win into the 2nd round, to face Taiji Ishimori. The fourth match on this show was changed as well, with Young Lions Yuto Nakashima & Kosei Fujita stepping in.
Prior to the opening match, long time veteran NJPW ring announcer Hidekazu “Kero” Tanaka brought out a Who’s Who of former NJPW stars and legends. Keiji Muto, Masahiro Chono, Tatsumi Fujinami, Seiji Sakaguchi, Norio Honaga (who would be a special referee during the 6th match), Akira Maeda (!!!), Jushin Thunder Liger, Kuniaki Kobayashi, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Kazuo Yamazaki, Wataru Inoue, Tiger Hattori, Shiro Koshinaka, Kengo Kimura, Riki Choshu, Milano Collection AT, Minoru Tanaka, Masahito Kakihara and Motoyuki Kitazawa were all in the ring, along with Kazuchika Okada. The original Tiger Mask, Satoru Sayama, gave a video message as he is not in good health to be appearing live (and neither is NJPW’s founder Antonio Inoki). Seiji Sakaguchi and Kazuchika Okada then gave short little statements, with Okada saying how nervous he was to be part of this historic event.
NJPW 50th Anniversary Show - 3/1/2022, Tokyo Nippon Budokan (NJPWWorld)
EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi & SHO [Bullet Club] d. Tiger Mask IV, YOH [CHAOS] & Ryohei Oiwa (Yujiro > Oiwa, Pimp Juice, 6:35)
Bad Luck Fale, Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo [Bullet Club] d. Taichi [SZKG], TAKA Michinoku [SZKG] & Minoru Tanaka [GLEAT] (ELP > TAKA, Thunderkiss ‘86, 9:50)
CIMA, El Lindaman & T-Hawk [#STRONGHEARTS] d. El Desperado, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & DOUKI [SZKG] (CIMA > DOUKI, Meteora, 9:22)
Will Ospreay, Great O-Khan, Jeff Cobb & Aaron Henare [United Empire] d. Satoshi Kojima, Yuji Nagata, Yuto Nakashima & Kosei Fujita (O-Khan > Fujita, Eliminator, 9:20)
Tetsuya Naito, SANADA, Shingo Takagi, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] d. Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma, Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS], Toru Yano [CHAOS] & Shiro Koshinaka [FREE] (Shingo > Honma, Last Of The Dragon, 12:38)
Champion v. Champion Tag Match: Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] d. Ryusuke Taguchi & Master Wato (Goto > Taguchi, Shoto, 15:04)
NJPW 50th Anniversary Match: Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS], Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tatsumi Fujinami [Dradition] d. Minoru Suzuki [SZKG], Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] & Yoshiaki Fujiwara [FREE] (Okada > Suzuki, Rainmaker, 18:12)
The babyfaces win the main, with Fujinami closing out the show with an “Ichi, Ni, San, DAAAA!” in tribute to Inoki. Okada and Tanahashi gave their own tributes to Inoki and the future of NJPW as well. Fujiwara and Suzuki kinda got each others’ goat through the match as well, with Fujiwara still trying to act as Suzuki’s trainer. Bishomon defeat Team Six or Nine in the annual Heavy v. Junior match, and it was a fun match, showing the triumph of four guys on the roster who’ve been seen as chronic underachievers or joke wrestlers.
GLEAT and #STRONGHEARTS showed out big on this show, with a tease of a singles match between Els Desperado and Lindaman, both champions in their companies.
Overall this was what the Anniversary show is supposed to do, make you feel good about NJPW and pro wrestling, with a lot of teases coming for the New Japan Cup 2022 tournament that starts tomorrow. I won’t be posting about it until Thursday, mind, but I think we’ll all be OK for it.
Tomorrow’s card:
New Japan Cup 2022
All shows on NJPWWorld
- 3/2/2022, Tokyo Nippon Budokan
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: CIMA [#STRONGHEARTS] v. TAKA Michinoku [SZKG]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Tomoaki Honma v. YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Yuji Nagata v. Hirooki Goto [CHAOS]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Togi Makabe v. Jeff Cobb [United Empire]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Toru Yano [CHAOS] v. Taichi [SZKG]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Hiroshi Tanahashi v. YOH [CHAOS]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Tetsuya Naito [Los Ingobernables] v. Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club]
New Japan Cup 2022 1st Round: Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] v. El Desperado [SZKG]
While we are celebrating anniversaries, it’s also the 19th anniversary of Kenta Kobashi defeating Mitsuharu Misawa, at last, for a title, which was the beginning of one of the greatest title runs ever, Kobashi’s lone, 13-defense reign of the GHC Heavyweight title. Next year is the 20th anniversary for that; I will mark my calendar now to do a longer-form piece about it at some point.
That’s really it for today. WAVE ran today as well. Tokyo Joshi held a show at a swimming pool with one match yesterday so I don’t think I really need to get into that one.
Be back Thursday, which promises a new unit reveal in Dragon Gate.

Full Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome, Summer Struggle in Osaka + Nagoya Cards Revealed; RIP Paul Orndorff (10/29/1949 - 7/11/2021)
Tumblr media
New Japan Pro Wrestling finally revealed the cards for the first batch of Summer Struggle tour shows that starts tomorrow, as well as the full cards for the two Summer Struggle in Osaka shows, Summer Struggle in Nagoya, and, crucially, Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome.
The Tokyo Dome show doesn’t have any real surprises, as it’s a dome show, therefore we should be getting many title matches and maybe a special singles grudge match or two. Both tag title matches and the IWGP Juniorheavyweight title match have been added to this show. There is also two dueling stipulations for the KOPW2021 New Japan Ranbo that is opening the show, but I’m not entirely sure I can make sense of it right now, so here, read this interview with Toru Yano and see if you can figure it out.
The two shows in Osaka and the show in Nagoya are both punctuated with special singles match main events; two of them in preview for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team title match at Wrestle Grand Slam, the other featuring grudge matches Hiroshi Tanahashi v. KENTA, and Tomohiro Ishii v. EVIL.
Kota Ibushi will be kept off the tour until the 7/19/2021 date in Ibaraki. Robbie Eagles makes his first in-ring appearance for NJPW since December on the 7/17/2021 Korakuen Hall show.
These are the cards we have for the tour so far. I’m not expecting any other announcements until after the Tokyo Dome show.

Earlier today we learned of the death of “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff at the age of 71. He was recently diagnosed with dementia, although it’s not certain if that contributed to his passing. Orndorff was one of the major players in the nationwide expansion of the WWF in the 1980s, his programs with Hulk Hogan, both as a rival and partner, drawing major gates, leading to the very first Wrestlemania, which he took part in the main event with Roddy Piper v. Hogan & Mr. T.
Orndorff was forever linked with Hogan, as they both shared Hiro Matsuda as a trainer. Indeed, Orndorff’s first tour of NJPW, from 10/10/1980 - 11/6/1980, saw him frequently tag with Hogan, usually in addition to Jimmy Garvin. Orndorff returned for several tours in 1983, and had singles rivalries with the likes of Akira Maeda and Seiji Sakaguchi, also getting wins over Kengo Kimura & Ryuma Go.
His NJPW work was but a blip in a superstar career, mind you, but that’s kinda what this blog is for.
Paul Orndorff had the looks and the abilities. A lot is going to be written about him coming up, a lot of it more knowledgeable than what I can provide, so it’s worth reading up. Our condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.

Brewed from Rice (Japanese Version) from Shuhari - Sawaya Matsumoto on Vimeo.
原料に勝る技術なし。 Rice is the essence of all.
If such things as sake brewing techniques exist, they shouldn't be only techniques for brewing good sake with any ingredient. They should be adapted skills that suit the characteristics of the ingredient used and the desired taste. We need to not only consider our know-how and skills but also rethink the concept of “ingredients”. That's what we think.
