Day 4 - Queens of Myu
For today’s theme for @sera-myu-week, while there are many many queens, if anyone knows me, my main Queen is Hikari Ono in all of her roles, but particularly the roles of Loof Merrow and Bloody Dracul Vampir. (She’s why I chose the moniker of Hikari for this site ;))
Throughout her years with the musicals, Hikari showed herself to be a talented and varied actress and singer. She known for doing many comedic roles, debuting as Hawk’s Eye in the SuperS Kaiteiban, but it is in her more serious roles where her talent shines because it shows how much depth and dimension she can give to her characters. Even with the seriousness that is Bloody Dracul Vampir, Hikari manages to fit in some comedic relief with the character all while keeping true to that character.
I picked Image De Mon Père for the first song. It’s one of my favorites from the Dracul series and Hikari’s performance of it is absolutely lovely.
Lyrics (Japanese Romaji):
Yami no koromo wa waga shito ne Kodoku ga sumiarasu imawashiki mi wa Inochi no himitsu uketsugishi Waga ichizoku no sadame wo seou Hito no ko nari ya narazu ya Kanashimi ikari midaresemegi Nido to aenu chichi wo omoi Toitsunoru yo no Ai no yume wa Mon Père, je t’aime

Hi! I’m wondering if you have seen the Sailor Moon musicals? If you have, could you rank your favorites? I’m wanting to dive into them and don’t know where to start lol
Oh you bet I can! I’ve actually seen “Le Mouvement Final” in Tokyo and Osaka and also starred as Neptune in a fan production (Germany’s second oldest show troupe YUME MUSICAL - their shows are a huge recommendation if you’re looking for “original” content as in fanfictions coming to life. Here’s our “fan kan” from 2018)
I personally prefer the musicals with Nao Takagi and Yuuka Asami not only because they’re the MOST PERFECT UraNep EVER EVER EVER EVER, but also because their shows are the only ones also bringing original content to life. They’ve did a few pieces from the 5 arcs, but mostly, it’s the only time this franchise has ever done something outside their 5 arcs and I LIVE AND BREATHE FOR THIS. It’s about vampires. It’s about wrestling matches. It’s gold. IT’S THE ONLY KISS WE’VE SEEN TO THIS DAY. Also, pay close attention to the talented Hikari Ono in villain roles. (My favorite Moon is Miyuki Kanbe (rest in peace), btw)
Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to watch this year’s Kaguya-hime yet, but I’m super interested in it since it also leaves the 5 arcs way. Also, UraNep look cuuuuuuuuuuute
So my recs are:
Shin Densetsu Kourin Kaguya Shima Densetsu => I would start with this one. It’s my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE and an easy way to get into this. It’s super fun and romance-y and the music is SO GOOD OH MY GOOD MYU MUSIC IS SO GOOD Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban) Natsuyasumi! Houseki Tankentai Shin / Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi - Last Dracul Jokyoku Kessen / Transylvania no Mori - Shin Toujou! Chibi Moon wo Mamoru Senshi-tachi Kessen / Transylvania no Mori (Kaiteiban) - Saikyou no Kataki Dark Cain no Nazo Last Dracul Saishuu Shou - Chou Wakusei Death Vulcan no Fuuin Tanjō! Ankoku no Princess Black Lady Tanjō! Ankoku no Princess Black Lady (Kaiteiban) - Wakusei Nemesis no Nazo 10th Anniversary Festival - Ai no Sanctuary Mugen Gakuen - Mistress Labyrinth
Don’t be afraid of the past musicals’ sometimes weird looking costumes! (They’re more sleek 2013 to 2017. When watching these ones, please pay close attention to RIONA TATEMICHI OH MY GOOD). Also, in these ones it’s an all ladies cast, so yes. Unfortunately, the singing voices of the Inners get less and less good the younger the musicals are ... I guess it’s because they went more for models than dancers/musical actors. There’s also the theory that actors evolve with each and every show like their characters, BUT NAO AND YUUKA WERE ALWAYS PERFECT

Random Sailor Moon Trivia:
The musical Kessen / Transylvania no Mori (Kaiteiban) - Saikyou no Kataki Dark Cain no Nazo was the only instance in the entire Sailor Moon series where the Sailor Quartet fought alongside the entire Sailor Team.

June 6 is the birthday of Yuriko Hayashi, the eighth actress to play Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter in the Sailor Moon musicals. She performed in Kessen / Transylvania no Mori (Kaiteiban) - Saikyou no Kataki Dark Cain no Nazo and  Last Dracul Saishuu Shou - Chou Wakusei Death Vulcan no Fuuin.

Interested in Myu-original storylines, i.e. ones not based on the animanga seasons/villains. Any recommendations on which one to start with? I'm interested in worldbuilding if that helps.
Ooh awesome ask! The musicals you want to watch are the Kaguya ones, the Dracul Series and even though its more of a celebration, it does have an original story: The 10th Anniversary Festival - Sanctuary of Love (Ai no Sanctuary).  Also, in my opinion, the runners up of having an “originalish” storyline would be the two SuperS musicals and The Eternal Legend (Eien Densetsu). While those shows do cover certain arcs, the musicals add enough of their own twists and changes to the story that they practically become an original telling of those arcs on their own.
I’ll break it down the Kaguya and Dracul Series with a tiny synopsis!
First up are the Kaguyas:
1999 Spring - The Legend of Kaguya Island (Kaguya Shima Densetsu)
1999 Summer – The Legend of Kaguya Island (Revised Edition) - Summer Vacation! The Jewel Expedition Party(Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban) - Natsuyasumi! Houseki Tankenta)
2004 Summer - The New Legend of Kaguya Island (Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu)
2005 Winter - The New Legend of Kaguya Island (Revised Edition) - Marinamoon Final (Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban) - Marinamoon Final)
The story between the original Kaguya Island and the “new” Kaguya Island musicals are similar but they have some differences in plot, a few characters and music. I highly recommend watching both and taking from either or as I find each version adds something to the overall story. Kaguya’s story, to simply put it, is about the Usagi and co. getting stuck on an island while being pursued by Loof Merrow and her band of Pirates looking for the Silver Crystal and a new enemy, Dark Plasman, the personification of a comet who wishes to take the place of Earth. The revised version of the original musicals offers a fun scene of Neo Queen Serenity, King Endymion and Chibiusa in Crystal Tokyo that is worth seeing. :D
Second, is the Dracul Series. We highly recommend that these musicals be watch in order as they are the only ones that actually have some semblance of a continuity (all the other shows are basically stand alones).
2000 Winter - New / Transformation - The Road to Become the Super Soldier (Shin / Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi - Last Dracul Jokyoku)
2000 Summer Decisive Battle / The Forest of Transylvania - A New Arrival! The Soldiers who Protect Chibimoon(Kessen / Transylvania no Mori - Shin Toujou! Chibimoon wo Mamoru Senshitachi)
2001 Winter - Decisive Battle / The Forest of Transylvania [Revised Edition] - The Enigma of the Ultimate Enemy, Dark Cain - (Kessen / Transylvania no Mori [Kaiteiban] - Saikyou no Kataki Dark Cain no Nazo -)
2001 Spring - Last Dracul Final Chapter - The Seal of the Super Planet Death Vulcan (Last Dracul Saishuu Shou - Chou Wakusei Death vulcan no Fuuin)
If I try to give a “brief” synopsis on the Dracul series, I might end up writing a mini essay. Sooo..lets just go with the Dracul series features a smorgasbord of monsters and mythology from vampires to undead serial killers to werewolves to heavy Judaic references to the mysterious 10th planet, Vulcan. This series is probably some of the darkest material in Sailor Moon and sometimes most complicated storyline. (Just note that the the 2001 Winter revised edition of TnM acts as both a revision and sequel to help tie the story into the 4th show, so don’t skip it!)
Annnnd that got really long but I hope you end up watching these wonderful shows! They are probably my favorites of all the older shows. :)
@ree-fireparrot, I’ll be curious to see what you think after giving them a view!
