Hi! I’m wondering if you have seen the Sailor Moon musicals? If you have, could you rank your favorites? I’m wanting to dive into them and don’t know where to start lol

Oh you bet I can! I’ve actually seen “Le Mouvement Final” in Tokyo and Osaka and also starred as Neptune in a fan production (Germany’s second oldest show troupe YUME MUSICAL - their shows are a huge recommendation if you’re looking for “original” content as in fanfictions coming to life. Here’s our “fan kan” from 2018)

I personally prefer the musicals with Nao Takagi and Yuuka Asami not only because they’re the MOST PERFECT UraNep EVER EVER EVER EVER, but also because their shows are the only ones also bringing original content to life. They’ve did a few pieces from the 5 arcs, but mostly, it’s the only time this franchise has ever done something outside their 5 arcs and I LIVE AND BREATHE FOR THIS. It’s about vampires. It’s about wrestling matches. It’s gold. IT’S THE ONLY KISS WE’VE SEEN TO THIS DAY. Also, pay close attention to the talented Hikari Ono in villain roles. (My favorite Moon is Miyuki Kanbe (rest in peace), btw) 

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to watch this year’s Kaguya-hime yet, but I’m super interested in it since it also leaves the 5 arcs way. Also, UraNep look cuuuuuuuuuuute

So my recs are:

Shin Densetsu Kourin Kaguya Shima Densetsu => I would start with this one. It’s my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE and an easy way to get into this. It’s super fun and romance-y and the music is SO GOOD OH MY GOOD MYU MUSIC IS SO GOOD Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban) Natsuyasumi! Houseki Tankentai Shin / Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi - Last Dracul Jokyoku Kessen / Transylvania no Mori - Shin Toujou! Chibi Moon wo Mamoru Senshi-tachi Kessen / Transylvania no Mori (Kaiteiban) - Saikyou no Kataki Dark Cain no Nazo Last Dracul Saishuu Shou - Chou Wakusei Death Vulcan no Fuuin Tanjō! Ankoku no Princess Black Lady Tanjō! Ankoku no Princess Black Lady (Kaiteiban) - Wakusei Nemesis no Nazo 10th Anniversary Festival - Ai no Sanctuary Mugen Gakuen - Mistress Labyrinth

Don’t be afraid of the past musicals’ sometimes weird looking costumes! (They’re more sleek 2013 to 2017. When watching these ones, please pay close attention to RIONA TATEMICHI OH MY GOOD). Also, in these ones it’s an all ladies cast, so yes. Unfortunately, the singing voices of the Inners get less and less good the younger the musicals are ... I guess it’s because they went more for models than dancers/musical actors. There’s also the theory that actors evolve with each and every show like their characters, BUT NAO AND YUUKA WERE ALWAYS PERFECT

Top 5 favorite soundtracks (in terms of how much I like the songs and how well I think they work/flow together)

Hands down, Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban) Natsuyasumi! Houseki Tankentai. I don’t know the word for this (is it leitmotif? maybe?), but the theme that plays throughout the musical in the overture, “5000nen Kaguya Shima”, “LINK”, and  “Minna Dareka ni Aisarete”, makes the whole soundtrack flow together beautifully and adds a lot of emotion, especially at the end. Plus, I feel like having some form of “Sailor War” is essential and Fumina sounds so nice singing it. :)

Sailor Stars/Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban)

Kessen / Transylvania no Mori - Shin Toujou! Chibi Moon wo Mamoru Senshi-tachi  (I hate putting this one in the middle because it’s my favorite musical, I just feel like  “We'll Be The Last Victory”  and  “Kaikou ~ Lilith to Astarte” don’t fit as well with the other songs)

Eien Densetsu (Kaiteiban) - The Final First Stage. This one also has a theme that plays throughout this musical (”Orleans no Sei Senshi”) and I think that really helps connect everything well, especially in  “Orleans no Sei Senshi ~ Uranus - Neptune no Uragiri”. I wish they hadn’t cut out “Oitsumerarete”, Anza’s performance of it was really moving. Adding several songs from earlier musicals was also a really nice touch.

 Sailor Moon SuperS - (Kaiteiban) Yume Senshi - Ai - Eien ni... Saturn Fukkatsu Hen

I get why they would want to use some songs from Fumina’s Kaguya Shima Densetsu musicals in Marina’s but I feel like using the “5000nen Kaguya Shima”/”LINK”/ Minna Dareka ni Aisarete” theme along with the “Junketsu no Narcissism” overture and battle song feels kind of awkward. I still enjoy the musical a lot, but “Junketsu no Narcissism” is a cool song, they should’ve focused more on it!

September 10th is Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury’s birthday!

So how can you celebrate?

☿ Rewatch or reread your favourite Mercury-centric chapter, episode, or musical! As the second Sailor Soldier introduced after Sailor Moon, she’s a main character throughout every season; try episode 008, her introduction episode; episodes 027 and 041, where Ami meets and later reunites with an apparent genius boy to whom she is both his rival and role-model; episode 062, where Ami gets the opportunity to fulfil her dream of studying abroad, but at the cost of leaving the Sailor Team; episode 071, where Ami faces off against Berthier in a chess match; episode 080, where a Droid manipulates Ami into hallucinating her friends have turned against her; episode 097, where Ami begins to feel like she’s a nuisance to the other Sailors, and is targeted for her Pure Heart; episode 151, where she is so moved by a music piece she finds online that she writes lyrics for it and endeavours to deliver them to its composer personally; and episode 191, where the Sailor Soldiers find themselves embroiled in a very different fight - a video game tournament, and it’s up to Ami to win first place. The plot of episode 062 was expanded on slightly in the musical Shin / Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi - Last Dracul Jokyoku, making Ami a more prominent character in that musical. Lastly, she is, most notably, the main character in the animated short Ami-chan no Hatsukoi [“Ami’s First Love"], based on the manga special of the same name.

☿ Fix yourself Ami’s favourite food, sandwiches! Ami herself has stated she loves them because she can eat them with one hand while reading/typing/studying with the other. So you could probably apply this logic to any one-handed finger-food. She seems particularly fond of cucumber sandwiches, but any filling would suffice - just steer clear of yellow-tail tuna, her least favourite food.

For sweets, another favourite food of hers is anmitsu, a combination of agar jelly, fruit, red bean paste, and “kuromitsu” treacle. And if you’re in the mood to bake, then here’s a tip Ami learned from her mother - use the engraved base of a drinking glass to pattern some sugar cookies.

☿ Ami’s hobbies are all befitting of a cold-seeming but warm-hearted genius schoolgirl; Why not relax in a bubble bath with that book you’ve been meaning to finish? If you’re already an avid reader, why not try something in the non-fiction genre, which Ami seems to prefer?

She’s also proficient at chess. Beginner or master, why not see if there’s a chess club in your area you could visit for the day, play a round online, or visit a park frequented by those looking for a match?

Ami is, of course, known for her talent at studying, but it’s not just to assure she gets into a good high school (and later, university). She is passionate about studying for self-improvement, including proficiency in multiple languages; teach yourself something new today in her honour. Go on a random-page wiki walk or watch a documentary or two. If you have a new hobby, or a hobby you’ve been neglecting for a while, now’s the time to do that boring practice or study you’ve been putting off that you know will help you improve in the long-run.

For sports, Ami is a talented swimmer. She prefers the pool to the beach, but you could visit either today for a dip in her name.

Ami’s most surprising hobby is video games, for which she has a competitive edge. Pick up a new title or host a casual competition online or with friends (if you throw a blue shell you’re dead to me). Why not play one of the many, many Sailor Moon titles for the Nintendo or other systems?

☿ Dress like Ami for the day! Ami’s style fits firmly in the “preppy” category, occasionally veering into vintage and couture, probably thanks to her rich doctor mother who drops diamond rings like it’s nothing. Common articles of clothing include cardigans, oversized coats with shorter skirts/shorts, and dresses. She typically dresses modestly, but does occasionally show off her legs. She doesn’t often wear trousers, but sometimes likes to dress down, showing a casual, sporty side. As expected, she wears a lot of blue, but also a lot of red, soft pinks, yellows, and pastel minty greens. Common accessories include jewelled brooches, belts, and headbands.

As Sailor Mercury, she wears simple blue studs that later turn into triple-studs, which she can press to summon her iconic “VR” goggles (though they are better described as augmented-reality). Anyone still have Google Glass?

Random Sailor Moon Trivia:

In the musical Shin / Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi - Last Dracul Jokyoku, Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon used Moon Princess Halation in conjunction with the talismans of the Outer Senshi in order to purify the Inner Senshi after they had become vampires.

Interested in Myu-original storylines, i.e. ones not based on the animanga seasons/villains. Any recommendations on which one to start with? I'm interested in worldbuilding if that helps.

Ooh awesome ask! The musicals you want to watch are the Kaguya ones, the Dracul Series and even though its more of a celebration, it does have an original story: The 10th Anniversary Festival - Sanctuary of Love (Ai no Sanctuary).  Also, in my opinion, the runners up of having an “originalish” storyline would be the two SuperS musicals and The Eternal Legend (Eien Densetsu). While those shows do cover certain arcs, the musicals add enough of their own twists and changes to the story that they practically become an original telling of those arcs on their own.

I’ll break it down the Kaguya and Dracul Series with a tiny synopsis!

First up are the Kaguyas:

1999 Spring - The Legend of Kaguya Island (Kaguya Shima Densetsu)

1999 Summer – The Legend of Kaguya Island (Revised Edition) - Summer Vacation! The Jewel Expedition Party(Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban) - Natsuyasumi! Houseki Tankenta)

2004 Summer - The New Legend of Kaguya Island (Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu)

2005 Winter - The New Legend of Kaguya Island (Revised Edition) - Marinamoon Final (Shin Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban) - Marinamoon Final)

The story between the original Kaguya Island and the “new” Kaguya Island musicals are similar but they have some differences in plot, a few characters and music. I highly recommend watching both and taking from either or as I find each version adds something to the overall story. Kaguya’s story, to simply put it, is about the Usagi and co. getting stuck on an island while being pursued by Loof Merrow and her band of Pirates looking for the Silver Crystal and a new enemy, Dark Plasman, the personification of a comet who wishes to take the place of Earth. The revised version of the original musicals offers a fun scene of Neo Queen Serenity, King Endymion and Chibiusa in Crystal Tokyo that is worth seeing. :D

Second, is the Dracul Series. We highly recommend that these musicals be watch in order as they are the only ones that actually have some semblance of a continuity (all the other shows are basically stand alones).

2001 Spring - Last Dracul Final Chapter - The Seal of the Super Planet Death Vulcan (Last Dracul Saishuu Shou - Chou Wakusei Death vulcan no Fuuin)

If I try to give a “brief” synopsis on the Dracul series, I might end up writing a mini essay. Sooo..lets just go with the Dracul series features a smorgasbord of monsters and mythology from vampires to undead serial killers to werewolves to heavy Judaic references to the mysterious 10th planet, Vulcan. This series is probably some of the darkest material in Sailor Moon and sometimes most complicated storyline. (Just note that the the 2001 Winter revised edition of TnM acts as both a revision and sequel to help tie the story into the 4th show, so don’t skip it!)

Annnnd that got really long but I hope you end up watching these wonderful shows! They are probably my favorites of all the older shows. :)

September 26 is the birthday of Nao Inada, the seventh actress to play Minako Aino/Sailor Venus in the Sailor Moon musicals. She performed in Kaguya Shima Densetsu,  Kaguya Shima Densetsu (Kaiteiban) Natsuyasumi! Houseki Tankentai, and  Shin / Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi - Last Dracul Jokyoku.

May 24 is the birthday of Ayano Gunji, the fifth actress to play Chibiusa/Sailor Chibi Moon in the Sailor Moon musicals. Her first musical was Shin Densetsu Kourin in 1998, and her final show was in 2000's Shin / Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi - Last Dracul Jokyoku.

Ayano was the longest running Chibi Moon actress. She was also the oldest to play Chibiusa in the first run of the musicals, graduating four months before she turned 12; when Petite Étrangère began, Airi Kanda was only two months away from turning twelve.

April 7 is the birthday of Teruyo Watanabe, the fifth actress to play Setsuna Meiou/Sailor Pluto in the Sailor Moon musicals. Her only performance was in Shin / Henshin - Super Senshi e no Michi - Last Dracul Jokyoku.
