Saint Grégoire l'Illuminateur

Saint Grégoire l'Illuminateur (auparavant connu sous le nom de Grigor Lusavorich, c. 239 - c. 330 de notre ère) fut le premier évêque de l'Église arménienne. On lui attribue généralement la conversion du roi Tiridate le Grand au christianisme, l'établissement formel de l'Église arménienne et la diffusion de cette religion dans tout son pays. Saint Grégoire est le saint patron de l'Arménie.

El monte Ararat

El monte Ararat (armenio: Masis; turco: Ağrı Dağı; kurdo: Çiyaye Agiri; azerí: Ağrıdağ; persa: Kūh-e Nūḥ) es un volcán compuesto inactivo, formado por dos antiguos picos volcánicos, situado en la actual Turquía oriental muy cerca de la frontera con Armenia. Fuertemente asociado a la cultura, mitología e identidad armenias, el monte Ararat es también el lugar donde, según algunas leyendas, aterrizó el Arca de Noé tras el diluvio bíblico.

Armenia's Khor Virap Monastery

Khor Virap is an ancient Armenian monastery located near the border with Turkey some 8 km (5 mi) from the town of Artashat, Armenia. It is situated on the Ararat Plain and offers fantastic views of Mt. Ararat in good weather. Legend has it that St. Gregory the Illuminator (c. 257-c. 331 CE) was imprisoned here for 14 years by Tiridates III of Armenia (r. 287-330 CE). Historical record states that a chapel built on the site by Catholicos Nerses III (r. 641-661 CE) — who was also responsible for the construction of Zvartnots Cathedral — in 642 CE. Continuously reconstructed througout the centuries, Khor Virap remains one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in modern Armenia.

Day 17: Faith can move Mountains. I think this is one of the most repeated verses in the Christian faith, our rallying cry, so to speak. Such a simple sounding phrase, yet the weight behind those words... I'll admit, while I was working on this one, I was dragged down memory lane. I started by thinking I needed a picture of mountains in the background for this picture, but then I realized I only needed one mountain: Ararat. Those who know me well know it has been almost six years since I stood in Khor Virap monastery and looked at that mountain with my own eyes. I won't go into the entire story about the monastery, or the mountain itself, because I can't possibly type all that I want to in one post. But I will say that I don't think I could find a picture that encompass the power of faith than Mt.
