The problem with having a "kitchen darkroom" is that one must actually clean the kitchen part to be able to use the drakroom part :/ (IE: you can't process film in a sink that's full of dirty dishes)

I came downstairs this morning & my mom was running her iRobot Mop Machine in the kitchen & was like “don’t walk on my floors”, so I was tiptoeing in socks around the kitchen getting a bowl of cereal for breakfast... ‬

An Adventurous First Week
So, I have finally met someone weirder than me.
Or at least, that's what Clara, my roommate and fellow intern, told me to say when I mentioned that I didn't know how to start this post.  Clara and I get along great.  We both like Miyazaki films, brownies, and spicy food (which we both order and then end up drinking a gallon of water... or a bottle of wine).  We both get up super early for work because we know that if we didn't, in two weeks we would be racing out the door to get to work.
We both go to bed a 9 PM.  We send each other ridiculous emails during work, and combined we are on all of the listserves that are supposed to be sent to both of us individually.
We have also survived our fair share of minor house catastrophes together.  Here are a few things we have learned;
1. Open the windows when you are about to cook chicken.
Tumblr media
2. So far, bagels are the only things we can prepare without incident.
Tumblr media
3. Check water coolers for cracks that let air in.  Otherwise you have to scour your apartment for containers to empty the water into.
Tumblr media
4. Our apartment barely had enough containers for us to get the water line below the crack.
Tumblr media
5. We know nothing about water coolers because next thing we knew, our kitchen was flooding.
Tumblr media
6. Central Residences is awesome because they provide us with extra towels we could use to clean the floor.

In other news, working at the Consulate has been amazing so far.  Everyone is super nice.  For example, my sponsor, my boss, and various co-workers have all gone out of their way so far to invite me out for meals.  They are always ready to offer some advice, and have invited me to various meetings that aren't necessarily related to my job, but are good educational experiences.  They put in a lot of effort to make sure that I feel included and that my work is interesting.  I am already extremely grateful to be working with them.
Unfortunately, the summer is a period of transition for the State Department with officers at the end of their tours leaving their current posts to go onto their next adventure.  Clara and I were fortunate enough to meet the Consulate General briefly at his farewell party, but will probably be gone before the next Consulate General arrives in Shanghai.  I have already attended two other farewell parties, and am guaranteed to attend many more.  The only upside is that these officers know how to through a good-by party.
Only one week has gone by, but I am excited for the weeks to follow.  Hopefully Clara and I will figure out our kitchen problems, and work will remain interesting as my workload increases as people leave.
