for all my cosmere-loving mutuals, if you hadn't realized, the acronyms of the stormlight archive books is a palindrome, symmetrical just like vorinism would love. we have TWoK(The Way of Kings), WoR(Words of Radiance), O(Oathbringer), RoW(Rhythm of War), and KoWT(Knights of Wind and Truth). so all together: TWoKWoRORoWKoWT, which is symmetrical !! I just found that awesome because symmetry in words is a whole thing in the series.

I actually really like how Sanderson has barely given us any focus on the other radiants in the various orders and focusing on our core cast. I believe he’s said we’ll get to see more “average” radiants in the back half, so my interpretation is that our core cast represents not the best or even baseline of the order, but rather the exact kind of person who needs those ideals, but hasn’t embodied them.

Spoilers ahead

Kaladin doesn’t become a Windrunner as a Soldier fighting valiantly with his squad; it’s him desperately trying to free his fellow bridgemen and needing just a bit more something to be the person he knows he should (one who can protect).

Szeth doesn’t become a Skybreaker while being a lawyer clerk of the court, or perhaps whatever his position was before being made Truthless. Indeed being Truthless couldn’t put him further at odds with law and order. But he needs it, especially when the only think holding order in his life is revealed to be a sham.

Lift has the grace of a greased ferret. Okay a little less jokey, Lift lives a life of pure ephemerality. She is forgotten and is usually taken aback or a bit offended when that isn’t the case (the cook leaving food for her). We don’t get to see her bond Wyndle, but her being a drifter and taking whatever she can stuff her face with doesn’t exactly scream austere empathetic man of the people that you’d expect from an Edgedancer.

Renarin is a Truthwatcher who is plagued by the inability to articulate what he knows to be true. He rarely finds the words, and usually ends up playing the role of a Cassandra; one who speaks truth that falls on closed ears.

Venli as a Willshaper is supposed to represent freedom and autonomy, all while she enslaves her people to a false god she knows is bent on anything but saving them all. She is the catalyst of the chains that have re-bound Roshar in endless war and she had given up on doing anything about it.

Shallan lacks finesse and refinement. Constantly going for the low hanging fruit of creativity than something more meaningful and artistic, meanwhile losing herself in her assumptions and delusional thinking (Kabsal, Taravangian, and Jasnah are all deceiving Shallan during this period of growth.)

While radiants like Shallan and Kaladin have mostly risen beyond their circumstances, do not forgot what brought each radiant there. It was not them being an Ideal Radiant, it was them needing to be made Radiant.
