Blessed with a three octave voice, Norway’s Rebekka Bakken has just put out her 15th album, and it certainly belies her categorisation as a jazz singer.

Here you’ll find a veritable kaleidoscope of styles - some soul, some blues, some pop and some folk. Oh yes, and a touch of jazz.

A musical beachcomber of sorts, she has built up a fascinating collection of handcrafted delights and curios, an approach that bears particularly sweet and juicy fruit.

Creating some vivid tales and presenting them with her enigmatic vocal style, her songs are carved out with one ear for the experimental and the other keenly attuned to the simple, straight to the core, melody.

The songs are hers and their presentation is quite unique, with her slightly Teutonic vowel fracture, combined with a delightfully wicked wordplay wit.

From the rambling back alleys of New Orleans, she drags out Black Shades and rolls it around a bit before casting it aside for some Weimar Republic polka on the rasping title track.

Other highlights include an understated reading of Time After Time, the sensually swaggering Yankee Days, the lovely True North and the four scotches too many Shelter.

Well worth investigating, Rebekka Bakken has spent most of her career trying to get away from the jazz tag, and Things You Leave Behind is simply a great album by an extremely talented singer/songwriter.

On savait la Scandinavie friande de musiques américaines old school, avec un public et une scène dynamiques et ouverts à ces genres.

Repéré en 1991 et ayant déjà publié neuf albums, le guitariste-chanteur norvégien Knut Reiersrud offre ici un blues étrangement progressif, passant de rythmes saccadés funky à des textures atmosphériques et méditatives, dues à la présence sur tout le disque de claviers variés, de l’ orgue Hammond aux sons carillonnant du Fender Rhodes. Un style de blues-rock teinté de soul music, par ses climats voluptueux ou ses chœurs « gospelisants » (« They only ask for love »). Ceci sans jamais tomber dans l’ écueil de la mièvrerie. Entre compositions d’excellence rappelant JJ Cale et élégants solis de guitare aux accents presque « gilmouriens » parfois, cette musique originale nous prouve que Knut Reiersrud et son groupe sont des acteurs de la scène blues-rock européenne avec qui il faut compter.

En prime, une très jolie pochette, ce qui ne gâche rien au plaisir de découvrir cette nouvelle acquisition du fonds Blues de la médiathèque à la cote 1.1 REI.

Den nye  Gorillaz - Humility (2018) Gorillaz fans venter normalt flere år på en ny udgivelse. Ikke denne gang, bandets 6 album, The Now Now udkommer kun 427 dage efter sidste års Humanz. Jeg valgte her det sommerlette nummer Humility, hvilket er et af to numre der er kommet som en aperitif før selve albums releasen d. 29 juni. Ligesom de forrige albums, loves der at være nogle interesante gæster. På dette nummer medvirker jazz guitaristen George Benson, så hvis du nyder guitarspillet, bør du også lytte til albummet Breezin' fra 1976. Nummeret var ikke en del af et nyt albumsprojekt, blot et nummer Tina havde lyst til at optage da hun legede rundt i studiet med en banjo guitar og en fod percussion. På albummet her kan du lytte til Knut Reiersrud på guitar og Iver Kleive på orgel. Nummeret The Ship Is At The Landing er dog kun vokal og guitar. Albumet er indspillet i Sankt Knuds Kirke i Odense. King, men hører så absolut stadig til eliten indenfor soul og blues musik. Kun med sin stemme har Bobby "Blue" Bland skabt sig sin karriere, og her i det valgte stykke musik, der kommer fra albumet Years of Tears, er blot et nummer der er fyldt til randen med den sorg der nu er, samt en underlagt humor. Sangeren ville kontakte politiet, da der er en fremmed i hans hus, at denne fremmed er hans kone, der netop har kommet salt i sin the og peber i hans kaffe, måske har noget hun bør fortælle. Albumet er stemningsfyldt, dystert og man kan til tider høre adrenalinen pumpe fra scenerne de er knyttet til i filmen. Trail of Souls - Solveig Slettahjell (2015)

Solveig Slettahjell (pronounced:��Sul-vay Shlet-I-Yell) was born in Bærum near Oslo in 1971 and grew up in the small town of Orkanger near Trondheim. As her father was a pastor, she grew up in church. She sang in choirs from the age of 7 and began accompanying various youth and gospel choirs on the piano from the age of 13. She also sang and played her own versions of hymns, negro spirituals, Norwegian religious folksongs, as well as her own compositions.

Solveig studied classical piano and singing at a secondary school for music in Trondheim, before going on to jazz studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music in 1992. Here she met Sidsel Endresen, who was her teacher from 1993 and until Solveig finished her master’s degree in 2000.

Hvilken sjanger dette skal sorteres inn under aner jeg ikke. Her var det både køntri, blues, gospel og et lite hint av jazz. Det som er sikkert er at dette var bra musikk. Både Solveig Slettahjell og Knut Reiersrud er i verdensklasse på sine instrumenter, og resten av bandet er vel ikke dårligere de heller. En strålende start på dagen.
