Athens is one of the sketchiest places I’ve been to, which is saying a lot considering I write international crime fiction and have traversed the world of sketchy places to fill my realistic fiction. Last time I was in Athens in 2008, I a) encountered a screaming young blonde with backpack who had just been jumped and robbed by a gang of youths a few seconds earlier. She was yelling “Why me?!” This was right near the Parthenon, b) was accosted by a man who literally emerged from the bushes near a major museum and tried to convince me to traffic contraband into the USA, c) was consistently harassed by the Arab host of an international youth hostel for “being American”; d) deliberately received the wrong change at the first shop I went to in Syntagma Square—had to insist on the correct amount. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, not including all the weird stuff I encountered in Mykonos. Anyway, this time around I was determined to avoid Athens and go straight to the islands, but Fate had a different algorithm in store for me. My Lufthansa connecting flight from Frankfurt, once a perfect connection time of 2:30, to Crete was changed to depart 7 hrs before I arrived, at 5:10am. I eventually got my money back but I had to book a different itinerary with Delta. This time I flew directly to Athens but had to wait there for 9.5 hours, during which time I took a day trip to the hip neighborhood of Kolonaki and went to the Benaki museum. Turns out it was a fine experience, the museum was okay but the mocha and pasta I had at a random coffee shop was sweet and the people watching, Greek style, was exquisite . Not even to change my total opinion of Athens, but nothing bad happened anyway! #travel #greece #athens #foodblogger #travelblogger

The Aeropagus: A Reflection
Tumblr media
This past month, I stood again on the Aeropagus in Athens, just below the Acropolis. It was almost seven years to the date when I first stood there and read aloud the story of the Apostle Paul's speech on that site from Acts 17
In the Acts account of Paul's speech on the Aeropagus, there is this line:
34 Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.
Let me share a bit about the traditions and historical accounts of who Dionysius and Damaris were.
Tradition holds that, at a young age, Dionysius found himself in Heliopolis of Egypt (near Cairo) just at Christ's crucifixion in Jerusalem. On that Great Friday, at the time of the crucifixion of Christ, according to the gospel, "From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land." (Matthew 27:45).
The young boy, Dionysius, was shocked by this paradoxical phenomenon and exclaimed: "God suffers or is always despondent" ("God suffers or is lost all"). He noted the day and hour of this supernatural event of the darkness of the Sun.
When Dionysius returned to Athens, he heard the preaching of the Apostle Paul in the Areopagus Hill in Athens and was stirred to believe Paul's teachings about Christ. He was baptized with his family thereafter.
Historical accounts wrote that when he learned that the Mother of Christ, Mary, lived in Jerusalem, he traveled to Jerusalem to meet her. From this meeting, he said: "Her appearance, her features, her whole appearance testify that she is indeed Mother of God."
It is also noted that he attended her funeral in Jerusalem and wept "torrents of tears," along with the Apostles at her passing.
Dionysius suffered a Christian martyr's end by burning. His story was preserved by the early Christian historian Eusebius of Caesarea in his Ecclesiastical History.
Dionysius eventually became the first Bishop of Athens. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches. He is the patron saint of Athens and is venerated as the protector of the Judges and the Judiciary.
In Athens, two large churches bear his name, one in Kolonaki on Skoufa Street, while the other is the Catholic Metropolis of Athens on Panepistimiou Street. The pedestrian walkway around the Acropolis, which passes through the rock of the Areios Pagos, is also named after him.
Dionysius is the patron saint of the Gargaliani of Messenia, as well as in the village of Dionysi in the south of the prefecture of Heraklion. The village was named after him and is the only village of Crete with a church in honor of Saint Dionysios Areopagitis.
Damaris (Δάμαρις) was one of those present when Paul preached in Athens. Her name means "Gentle." Like Dionysius, the Areopagite, she embraced the Christian faith following Paul's speech.
Because women were not present in Areopagus meetings, Damaris was traditionally assumed to have been a hetaera (courtesan, high-status prostitute), but modern commentators have alternatively suggested she might have been a follower of the Stoics (who welcomed women among their ranks) or a foreigner visiting Athens.
Damaris is a Saint of the Greek Orthodox Church, remembered on October 3rd with Dionysius the Areopagite and two other disciples of Dionysius, who also became martyrs.
In modern Athens, Saint Damaris is also honored by having a street named after her — Odos Damareos — near the Profitis Ilias Square, one of the main urban open spaces in the Pagkrati neighborhood.
Years ago, I uncovered this beautiful poem by Jessica Coupe about Damaris:
Damaris of Athens
It was on Mars Hill I first heard the small man preach. He whom some called ‘the Babbler’.
“I noticed,” he said, “you have an altar inscribed ‘To the Unknown God’. Listen, as I tell you about Him whom you ignorantly worship.”
His voice sounded as sure as a lion, as he spoke of the God who had met him on the road to Damascus.
Around me people scoffed. Each day we wake to a multitude of stories. Athens is full of stories. Full of distractions. To them this seems but one more.
But to me this story is different. This story has a Spirit about it… The Babbler, whose name is Paul, says that we are the offspring of God.
Not just any god but the Almighty. The Creator of sun and moon and stars. The Creator of order and beauty and bounty.
“He is not far from us, his children.” Not far from us… My heart sings for very joy, even as those around me mock. The Spirit of Life, my Father’s spirit, whispers through my soul, brushing the cobwebs from my heart, and filling me with heaven’s love.
The short man leaves the scoffers to the cold comfort of their own intelligence.
“Wait,” I call to him. He turns with a smile. I would learn more of the Unknown God. I will feel after him.
I will find him…
These two people were changed forever because Paul wasn't afraid to share his faith and to do so in a way that was inclusive and filled with grace and peace.
As I stood on the Aeropagus, reflecting on all this and more, I remembered my previous visit, which occurred during a crossroads in my life.
When I read those words of Paul back then, I had no idea that seven years later, I would be there once more. On that first visit, I wept as I read Paul's words, realizing that they were placing a renewed sense of call upon my life.
It was a call to continue sharing my own story, reaching out to those who might not ever give church or Christianity a chance.
The words of that short rabbi from Tarsus, the "Babbler," are still alive and powerfully moving all these two thousand-odd years later.
And to that, I say, "Amen." And also this: May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you now and always. Amen.

Survival Handbook for Greece
I traveled to Greece for vacation and wanted to get vape kits, e-cigarettes, Shisha, hookah, CBD juice, and cigars. My buddies and I planned to throw a wild party in Mykonos, and we knew we'd need a lot of "nice things" to pull it off. Regrettably, we had no idea who to approach in order to meet our requirements. Let's face it: as a visitor, you have no idea where to look for "the good things." Tourists can be duped, especially when purchasing smoking accessories such as cigars, pipes, Shisha bongs, and legal marijuana. It's worth noting that recreational cannabis use is outlawed in Greece. As a result, the only "Legal cannabis" that is accessible contains a high amount of CBD but no TSH. I found the highest level of CBD in legal pot in Greece, which was 35 percent, on WWW.Vapour2smoke.gr. Visit https://vapour2smoke.gr/cbd.html?cat=485 for more information.
I felt a little goofy while smoking this, but it was quite relaxing. Anyway, to cut a long tale short, I inquired about legal cannabis with the hotel receptionist. They were completely unaware. Then I inquired of a hotel guest, who was adamant about not discussing anything with us. In Greece, "legal weed" is still quite taboo, which makes it difficult to find a place to satisfy your smoking cravings. Anyway, I decided to go out on my own and hunt for legal marijuana, which I found in four different stores. I went to Omonia but was unsuccessful. Omonia, for those who don't know, is the heart of Athens, where you can find almost anything. Unfortunately, I searched the entire square for CBD goods or a smoking shop without success. Despite the fact that I was inclined to ask folks standing on corners where I could find legal marijuana. The only thing that kept me from going was the fact that I didn't know Greek. Anyway, after walking around Omonia square a few times and staring at people in the hopes of finding someone who could assist me, I decided to take an older woman's advice and go to Kolonaki, which is also in the heart of Athens. Kolonaki is located in the heart of Athens, however it is regarded as a more affluent neighborhood. I got a taxi to the location.
The trip was brief, and I could have easily walked there, so if you decide to travel the same route, you won't need to use a cab. I was walking down Academias Street when I came across a nice boutique that seemed quite interesting. Vapour2smoke and CBD living had a very good sign that said "cash-and-carry." I could read everything on the business sign because it was written in English. "CBD items," "Shisha/hookah," "electronic cigarette," and "tobacco accessories" were all included on the vapour2smoke sign. I was overjoyed to have discovered such a lovely shop. When I entered the business, I noticed how clean it was and that the person who wished to assist me spoke English. I could find almost whatever I needed in the store. Electronic Shishah bongs, liquids, and kits in a rainbow of colors. Vape devices with a fashionable external lining, as well as "legal cannabis." "Finally, legal cannabis," I thought to myself. I came across "legal weed pollen" as well as Lebanon Kush. I also found Cohiba cigars and outstanding fruit tobacco for all of my party guests. Because the costs at vapour2smoke were so low, I was able to buy a lot more for my money. &, K is the exact location of the shop. 10671, as well as an online store at www.vapour2smoke.gr It goes without saying that my Mykonos party was a success after shopping from vapour2smoke. People were extremely calm while smoking "legal pot," and I was ecstatic that I could be such an excellent host. Thank you for visiting www.vapour2smoke.gr. Thank you for accommodating all of my visitors' smoking requirements at a price that I could afford.

Visiting Greece?
Tumblr media
“Athens, the eye of Greece, mother of arts and eloquence” – John Milton
Athens; the capital and the largest city of Greece, the city of magnificent historical background and its importance that no other city in the world can come parallel with!
Athens has so much to its past that its history spans over about 3400 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the world. Interesting, right?
Classical Athens was an epicenter of arts, culture and philosophy, and home to Plato’s Academy and Aristotle’s lyceum. Athens, even today, has a great impact on the European continent and is referred to as “ cradle of democracy and western civilization”. Being the capital of Greece, the city is a metropolis cosmopolitan and a hub of economic, financial, industrial and cultural activities.
If you are planning on visiting Athens, here is what you will love to do.
Discover one of the greatest examples of ancient Greece;  the high city- The Acropolis
Each antiquated Greek city had an Acropolis to ensure the sanctuary of the patron divinity and the city treasury.  Athens' Acropolis has been written in capital letters.  The explanations behind this date back 2,500 years. Athens won the Greco-Persian Wars, however, the last attack of the city had left its acropolis – it was still written with a small 'a' at the time of siege – in ruins. In 460 BC the Athenian ruler Pericles, a famous military administrator started huge development on the acropolis. His objective was to transform the slope into a self-important exhibition of triumphant Athenian popular government. The development harmonized with the pinnacle of a then-new pattern in what we call Classical Antiquity
Check out the Evzones!
With their creased skirts, white leggings, tuft shoes, the Evzones guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma are a sight of great fascination for tourists, who snap photographs of these world-class fighters and try to crack a smile on their faces for the picture. Just 120 individuals from the Greek armed force – all of them taller than 1.86 m, or six feet one –  wearing the three-kilogram, or 6.6-pound clogs and the astonishing regalia displayed on garments worn by the klephts, rebels who battled in the War of Liberation against the Ottoman Empire. Each Evzone irons his own skirt, whose 400 creases symbolize 400 years under Ottoman principle. These Evzones are great warriors when it comes to fighting. In 1941, a German official arranged the Evzone guarding on the Acropolis. Konstantinos Koukidis brought down the Greek banner, enveloped himself with it and hopped off the Acropolis. During demonstrations in 2001, someone set fire to one of the Evzone's guard boxes and the watchmen didn't move until the official on watch requested them to move. Insane, right? The best time to watch the Evzones is on Sunday at 11:00, when they demonstrate a whole powerplay wearing their most amazing white outfits.
Add Pireus in your to-do list.
Piraeus is Greece's third-largest city and it is located so close to Athens that they in actual are thought to form one city. Piraeus, situated on a peninsula with three harbors, has consistently been considered as a part of Athens rather than a free city. This shared relationship dates back to 478 BC, when Themistocles manufactured the Long Walls associating Athens and the ports. During the Middle Ages, the main occupied structure in Piraeus was a religious community. Nonetheless, individuals started coming back to the port city in 1834 when Athens turned into the capital of recently freed Greece. What is there to see in Piraeus? Certainly don't miss the harbor, which houses one of the biggest merchant naval forces in the Mediterranean.
Don’t miss the Monastiraki!
The Monastiraki neighborhood is situated along one of the best routes to the Acropolis – and it displays. souvenir stands, little shops, and a crowd of foreigners. From them you can purchase everything from leather shoes to silk shawls, grapes, rubbery tomatoes, pirated CDs, "I Love Athens" tops, icons, works of art of Greek bar scenes. For a progressively wonderful and less crowded Monastiraki shopping experience, go to the little Avissynias Square. You'll discover a swap market there, and if you like old spoons, weaving, furniture, and ouzo glasses, you can easily kill an hour or two there chasing in the midst of the garbage: a really Greek adaptation of Portobello Road short the improvement
Shopping Galore!
Five minutes into the excited, uncontrollably gesturing and yelling swarms at the antiquated market will persuade you that Athenians love shopping. In any case, their shopping lunacy goes a long way past wheeling and dealing over new ground hamburger and artichokes. Local people are captives to mold and hit the boutiques in the Kolonaki neighborhood or brand-name stores on Ermu Street with genuine energy. Shopping centers have shown up on the Athenian shopping scene a little late, however, they've just cut out their specialty inside it, and are growing. Shopping center Athens, the first of its sort, and Attica Department Store, which is progressively similar to a very gigantic mall, are as of now filled to flooding.
So, When Are You Visiting Athens?
Spare a few days out of your hectic life and spend them in the Greek capital city of Athens and you will be found saying that you’ll never want to leave! Because if you are someone who is always searching for lively destinations to visit, your search is over Athens has it all! Lively destinations, mouth-watering cuisine, hospitable people, and a long long history. You will fall in love with Athens I bet you a million dollars on that. So when are you visiting Athens?
