Writing update...

I cannot believe (and am honestly ashamed) of how long it has taken me to get through the next chapter of "The Road Less Traveled" but good news! I'm just about finished with the first draft of the chapter (just need a few more scenes to wrap it up) and it's a pretty long chapter. I'll need a bit of editing and then hopefully will be posted in a week or so.

The chapter is finally what I wanted it to be, with some great Kurtbastian moments, and the focus on Kurt and his past trauma.

hey i just wanted to say- me and my sister are huge glee fans (like, HUGE it’s unhealthy) and i remember finding your stuff years ago and sending it to her. we fell in love, your writing is so insanely good, both of us reference your fics all the time, come back to them often, etc. specifically we’re kurt stans and YOU GET HIM (a kurtbastian fic wouldn’t go astray if you were into that, but i wont push). we only just found out that you’re still active in the glee fandom and we’re so happy!! anyway, this is basically just a message of appreciation - we wanted to go a bit crazy and talk about three of our favorites and why we love them if you don’t mind:

Il Maestro - OMG a must read anytime we rewatch diva, you wrote blaine’s reaction to what tina did so fantastically. i love that you chose to have it from someone else’s perspective, because i can only wonder what was going on in blaine’s head, but it’s also so obvious from your description of his face. also there’s a part where you talk about artie empathizing with the feeling of your body being treated as if it’s not your own, and we both thought it was just so fantastically written and really hit the nail on the head of that feeling.

ash and the phoenix - this one’s just so damn fun 🥳 it’s got everything you could possibly want from a rewrite fic, imo it’s perfect

how hard you’re trying - how you write kurt’s conflicted feelings about mr schue and how schue has treated him is so accurate and such a realistic look into kurt’s mind! so satisfying to read

Oh my gosh thank you so much!!!! (And sorry I am a bit late in replying, I have been under a rock for the past 2 weeks.)

It's always exciting to hear from someone enjoying my old episode reaction fics. I remember back when I decided to start doing them and what a wild ride it was. Some weeks I felt like "WTF am i writing?" (this sucks) and sometimes I felt like "WTF am i writing?" (where did this come from? this is great!).

That's the thing about deciding to write on a regular basis and in response to a television show where you have no idea what's coming next. Not everything I wrote pleased me, but if I hadn't made that commitment, I never would have written the stories that did. And the three you mentioned are among the ones that make me so happy I made the commitment to write regularly for the Glee fandom.

I am delighted to hear that they are your favorites and what you like about them 💕 I write as a way of connecting with other fans, so thanks for connecting back!

I have started writing my Kurtbastian fic!!!! Probably will be a slow process bc I work a terrible 40+ hours a week warehouse job lol I also need to find the Kurtbastian fic that inspired the premise. Hint: it takes place at NYADA and there's a musical *cough* Wicked *cough*.

blaine/sebastian roleswap au

kurt meets sebastian on the dalton staircase and sebastian sniffs out the insecurity on him like a police dog and decides to mess with kurt for the long con (is what he tells himself.) while he was sternly advised to get normal by his dad and stop dicking around (which is why he is back from france and forbidden to go to scandals but what he doesn't know, doesn't hurt) he is far from developing a frontal lobe just yet so he thinks some twink wandering into HIS school should be fair game to mess around with.

even if sebastian tells himself he is being mean for the funnies, he is also terrified of intimacy and everytime kurt gets a little too close he wants to ruin his relationship with him. he does come to care for kurt but in the meantime but it's easier on his psyche if he tells himself he does not gaf.

kurt is at his loneliest and desperate for someone to at least understand him so he develops codependent feelings for sebastian anyway.

all burt ever hears about sebastian is that he is pissing off kurt. he really hates sebastian.

sebastian's os confession is much clumsier but kurt finds it endearing anyway.

in season 3 sebastian transfers to mckinley because he is not immune to kurt's powers and he feels extremely off balance. none of the new directions like sebastian either.

sebastian gets the role of tony (it is season 3. kurt can never win) and invites the warblers as a semi-apology for leaving one week into september just because his boyfriend asked him to and meets blaine who at this point only really has some vague ideas of sabotage in mind but then meets kurt at the lima bean and quickly shifts tracks to "stealing kurt from his good for nothing boyfriend i've only heard bad things about."

kurt hates blaine because he thinks blaine wants to steal his boyfriend, blaine is in love with kurt and hates sebastian (even if he doesn't show it), sebastian likes blaine and finds it funny how much he can piss kurt off.

in michael blaine wants to slushie sebastian but kurt protects him. blaine starts throwing up and crying. even though kurt needs surgery for his eye, he keeps bringing up the clothes he wore and got ruined. sebastian and santana confront blaine who just really wants to meet kurt. but obviously that's not going to happen.

pre-omw blainofsky is a loose thing and blaine still photoshops that picture of finn because he is stupid and now (through dave) knows that finn was forgiven for his kurt crimes, but apparently if you almost accidentally blind a guy you can just go fuck yourself.

in season 4 he is so inconsolable that kurt is not even in the same state as him that dalton needs to recruit hunter as the warblers captain. blaine is depressed enough to not care about show choir integrity so he is part of the steroid scandal.

all sebastian did in seasons 2-3 is be horrible to kurt and everyone so he would be careful and reedemed enough to not cheat (let's give him an award) and kurtbastian actually does make it work long distance, despite blaine's scheming (details undecided).

they don't get married in season 5 or 6 because kurt needs to boil that frog longer. but he's getting there.

Writing meme about me!

@lusthurts tagged me over two weeks ago but I have been so busy with work I haven't had a chance to answer it.

How did you get into writing fanfiction?

Unofficially I just liked messing around with the characters in the media I consumed, I've always had a habit of pausing in my watching or reading to daydream and theorize about what could happen, or maybe just what my brain wished would happen and so at a very young age I started writing those ideas down.

At some point when I was twelve or so I discovered FF.Net through the Supernatural fandom, I don't remember exactly how. But that was when I went from writing Stargate and Inuyasha fanfiction purely for myself and started writing and publishing Supernatural fanfiction. I really love the weekly 100 word drabble challenges that fandom had back in the day and most of my oldest surviving fic are for those prompts as most of my other stuff I've deleted over the years.

2. How many fandoms have you written in?

So Glee is obviously my most prolific, and then Supernatural would be just behind that. In the past I've also written for Stargate, Inuyasha, Naruto, Buffy, Harry Potter, The Vampire Diaries, Doctor Who, and Takin' Over the Asylum, but most of those have been deleted and lost over the years. I do have unpublished WIPs for Stranger Things, OMGcheckplease, The Real O'Neals, Captive Prince, Magnus Archives, Hatchetfield, and probably more, no idea if any of those will actually see the light of day though.

3. How many years have you been writing fanfiction?

I've been publishing it for about fifteen years but writing it for probably twenty which is an insane number to type out. Like I know I've been writing for pretty much my whole life but seeing it in words puts it in a new perspective. But yeah, my earliest posted work is from 2009.

4. Do you read or write more fanfiction?

It depends on the era? Currently I've been writing more fic than reading, purely because I've been focused on reading so many regular books at the moment (my roommate and I are in a race to read the most books this year, and I'm currently winning, but the rules are that I can't count anything that isn't already on StoryGraph and most of the fics I read are not).

5. What is one way you've improved as a writer?

I think my ability to write banter has improved a lot. I've been writing for so long that everything has improved, but the most noticeable to me is my dialogue, especially when it's witty. I used to struggle so hard with that even though I loved good banter in stories. It's part of why I used to not write Kurtbastian, because banter is so integral to their relationship, but I've been getting more and more comfortable with it .

6. What's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?

I'm going to ditto Lusthurts Ohio geography, which is especially frustrating considering how much Glee itself ignores Ohio geography so there's this line of making it not sound completely stupid while also remaining true to Glee's own absolute disregard for it. Also songs and movies that came out in 2012 specifically since I write a lot of stuff set in season 4 of Glee and I try to keep the media I reference contemporary.

7. What's your favorite type of comment to receive on your work?

I love all comments! But if I had to chose my favorites it's probably anytime that I drop subtle hints or foreshadow something and people pick it up and point it out, either on the original read through or during a reread. I also love when people point out symbolism I didn't intend or realize I was making.

8. What's the most fringe trope/topic you write about?

Idk I kinda write a lot of infidelity and toxic relationship stuff. Seblaine is the main ship I write for nowadays, and the nature of their relationship lends itself to a lot of infidelity in their process of getting together. I also just love writing angst, so even when I'm writing established relationships, they end up being sort of toxic throughout especially given the traits of both characters. I just find it more fun and probable to write a slightly toxic relationship than a 100% healthy one.

(I did not intend to just leave Lusthurts answer for this one, but also, ditto. I love the messy toxic relationships, they've always intrigued me and they're so fun to sink your teeth into. I also love writing a lot of polyamory, which idk how fringe it is nowadays but I've been trying to breakaway from the throuple mold and branch out into more interesting, complex, and realistic polycules)

9. What is the hardest type of story for you to write?

I tend to stick very much to the emotional side of things, so stories that get too physical or actiony are the ones I struggle with. Since I've been reading more I've been getting better but it's still not great.

10. What is the easiest type?

Hurt no comfort, lol. Like I do enjoy writing the comfort but sometimes my brain gets hung up on it not being realistic, things getting better too quickly, things like that. But it gets less anxious about just having the angst, even with no happy ending.

11. Where do you do your writing? What platform? When?

I tend to write on my couch, I do like going to the library down the road when I really want to focus, but usually I just write in my living room. I usually just write to google drive, I'm interested in alternatives but I've been using google since jr high so I'm just very used to it and it has so many years of documents. And I just write whenever, but usually in the evening after work, but really whenever I have time.

12. What is something you've been too nervous/intimidated to write, but would love to write one day?

I love ensemble fics and all the distinct personalities of the different characters and I would love to write one that focuses on many characters one day. I'm kind of trying that with my Season 2 AU but that still mostly focuses on Kurt, Blaine, Sebastian, and Sam, which is exactly who most of my fics focus on, so I'm not sure if it will fit full ensemble status by the time I'm done.

13. What made you choose your username?

So Daisy is an old nickname of Darren Criss' (he's talked about it in a few interviews, how he was studying abroad in Italy and when you say his initials in an Italian accent it sounds like Daisy) and when he was in Hedwig and the Angry Inch the username DarrenisHedwig was already taken but I thought DaisyisHedwig would be fun and I've been it ever since.

6: Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?

mmm maybe not to that extent but there are def ships i used to not care about/dislike and that i've since grown to appreciate! i'd say kurtbastian is the main one (shoutout to bella) and to a lesser extent kurtofsky (shoutout to robin). for the most part i think my opinions haven't drastically changed tho

10: Most disliked arc? Why?

whatever they had going on in ikag... kinda ties into my answer for 12 but i feel like there was a way to approach the idea of finn outing santana and then both of them dealing with the ramifications of that and it could've been interesting but my god it was handled so poorly in canon. honestly it doesn't even last long enough for me to consider it an arc bc most of it gets dropped after that episode. like idk can u imagine if finn had actually faced any consequences or taken any accountability for doing that and grown from his mistakes instead of somehow turning the tables and "helping" santana get through it like it wasn't his fault in the first place... if they hadn't done the stupid lady music week where people are just singing at santana and picking songs that didn't really do anything (puck i am looking at u in particular but i also think that i'm the only one gcv is one of the better songs in the ep ngl) (like context aside i think the gcv is fine and there are worse ones in there)... if there had been literally any scenes involving brittana bc it's kinda crazy that we didn't get to see britt, santana's girlfriend, supporting santana through a major shitty event (i don't think she even has that many lines?? she barely speaks the whole time and more of her lines are about the student council election than about the shit santana is dealing with? unless i'm remembering incorrectly?) (ur telling me that we get pezberry singing i kissed a girl instead of like. idk. a britt solo or a brittana duet or even just them talking about it???).... that ep has exactly one good scene and everything else makes me want to scream into a pillow and break things. it's not real to me. there was a way to make that storyline work but the writers just went "nah lol"

kurt probably! maybe this is just a by-product of being close friends with bella, a kurt multi-shipper with whom i've had many convos about almost every kurt ship, but i feel like most of his ships have sth to appreciate there

hmm i'd say finn bc i don't feel like any of the finn ships i've seen have ever gripped me? i think with every other glee kid there's like. a default ship that i'm at least ok with (if not super invested). but with finn i don't really have that

It depends. Direct compliments, yes, I'll reply to say thank you. I'll also answer questions, or drop little bits of behind-the-scenes info if there's something fun attached to a detail that a reader pointed out. If the comment is simply "wow!!" or "oof" or something else that doesn't really call for a response and that I don't have anything to add to, I'll just leave it as it is.

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Toss up between two:

Heartless ends with Kurt getting hit with another wave of grief after having Finn's letterman returned to him, and while he's hugging it and sobbing, for a second it feels like Finn's hugging him back.

The Longest Distance Between Two Points Is Arm's Length ends with Cisco accidentally vibing a moment from earlier in the fic, and misunderstanding what's happening in it. If he'd had context, he would've realized he was seeing proof that his mom loves him, but instead he takes it as a painful reminder that he'll never be enough for her because he's not Dante.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably Alive Again. Just two dorks playing in the rain, on the brink of falling in love.

Do you get hate on fics?

None so far.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Absolutely not.

Do you write crossovers?

Not usually, but I have a few. Maybe Our Real Soulmates Were The... is considered a crossover fic by AO3 and FFN's standards, but not by mine. My most ambitious crossover (and the one I'm most invested in) is Preppy In Pink, which is gonna be so much fun when it's ready for posting.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I certainly hope not. Doesn't look too likely, though.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Pretty sure I haven't had that happen, either. It'd be cool though.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Smoke and Mirrors started as a few lines of dialogue that @kurtbastian-land had sitting in her notes app that she didn't have a full story developed for, and posted on Tumblr for anyone who wanted to expand on it. I wrote a very dramatic continuation (the majority of chapter 1), and then @jwmelmoth gave it a happy ending (chapter 2). But then she realized we left a couple loose ends untied, so the two of us collaborated on how it should end, and wrote a few more chapters together.

What’s your all-time favorite ship to write for?

I honestly don't know. I think I have the most WIPs for Kamisco at the moment, but Barrisco and Kurtbastian are both incredibly fun as well.

What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I started a crossover AU ages ago where Kurt Hummel ends up with Eric van der Woodsen. I don't think I'll ever finish it, but I like to reread the snippets I've already written every now and then.

What are your writing strengths?

Viscerally describing emotions, setting a scene, nailing characters' voices.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Titles, titles, titles, and titles. Oh, and also titles. They HARD!! Also, I'm very bad at following my own advice to write badly and edit later. I want everything to sound pretty immediately! This is how I get stuck on the same paragraph for weeks with a whole big chunk of the fic still unwritten.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Not something I'm going to attempt a whole lot of in the near future. I have already slipped a little bit of Spanish (+1 word of French) into a couple fics, but only like a single word/phrase at a time, spoken by bilingual characters in mostly English sentences. There are also a few spots where a character says more in Spanish, but I don't write the actual dialogue, I just imply a general idea of what they're saying. I'd love to include more, but I'm not about to make a fool of myself with Google Translate—I'm sticking to very minimal Spanish until I can speak it better.

First fandom you wrote for?

First fandom I finished a fic for was Gossip Girl. As for first one I started writing a fic for, it was either Gossip Girl (not the same fic) or Boy Meets World (a still unfinished Shawngela fix-it).

Favorite fic you’ve written?

I mean, A Little Help From Your Friends is pretty hard to beat. It's got everything—humor, angst, fluff, ambiguity, movie references, ROOMMATES!! And funnily enough, I gave it a title with a little help from my friend, @daftydraw (and by "a little" I mean she suggested the whole title and I ran with it).

Kurtbastian Week - Day 4

Kurt blinks at the picture of himself, dressed in a pretty nice ensemble which is, unfortunately, paired with the world’s worst hat. Seriously, it looks like he melted down a raccoon and molded it around his forehead-- but that’s not his primary concern.

That concern would be why, exactly, Sebastian’s that far down his consistently active Instagram page.

Kurt approached the desk in the waiting room and waited, but eventually gave up. “Could I interest you in taking out an ad in our playbill?”

The middle-aged woman at the desk finally looked up. “What?”

“McKinley high school is staging West Side Story, and I’m looking for sponsors to put ads in our playbill.”

She still looked like she had no idea what he was talking about, so he held up the mockup he had done for the front cover with the pricing on the back.

“Oh, you mean like in the handout?”

“Yes. At the back of the playbill, we’re offering ads to local businesses, starting at one-eighth of the page, the equivalent to a business card, up to a full-page ad.” He turned the page over to let her see the options.

“I’ve never done anything like this. How many people are likely to see this?”

“Well, the show runs for four days, and the auditorium holds about 300 people, so potentially about a thousand people.”

“Give me a few minutes. I’ll go see what my boss thinks.”

While she was gone, a guy about his age came in the front door. He gave Kurt a once-over. Noticing that the front desk was vacant, he said, “Is there something I can help you with?”

“Do you work here?”

“No.”

“Then I don’t see how you could help me. The receptionist should be back soon.”

He tipped his head just slightly and raised an eyebrow. “Why are you here?”

“I’m looking for sponsors for our fall musical.”

“Which is?”

“West Side Story.”

“Nice. I once played Baby John.”

Kurt smiled politely but refrained from inquiring further.

“When is the show?”

Kurt gave him the dates.

“Maybe I’ll come watch.”

Before Kurt could say anything else, the receptionist returned. “We’ll take a business card-sized ad.” She picked up a card from the wood display on her desk. “Just use this.” She handed him cash. “I hope it goes well or whatever the right thing to say is.”

“Thanks.”

Just then, a tall, dark-haired man stepped out of the office that the receptionist had been in. “Oh, good. You’re here already.”

“Yes. I didn’t get in as much traffic as I did the other day. Mallory is in the car.”

“I’ll just grab my coat and be right out.” He turned and went back into the office.

“I’m Sebastian, by the way.” He reached out to shake Kurt’s hand but was interrupted by his father coming back out of the office.

“Kurt,” he said as he stepped back.

Sebastian crossed the room and opened the door, letting his father step out first. Before he left, he turned back and winked at Kurt. “It was a pleasure to meet you, Kurt.”

LMAO Y E S- Sebastian and Kurt absolutely hate it at first, then realize, “hey it’s a way to get free coffee and cookies.” So they actually start talking and getting to know each other-

Maybe one day one of them walks in with a friend, and the baristas get jealous on Kurt/Sebastians behalf, so they do petty things like get the friend’s coffee order wrong or, “accidentally” spill coffee on them. 😭

how come you ship kurt with someone who canonically wanted to hurt him? sebastian was nothing but rude to him and hated everything about kurt especially everything that made him special, and he regularly put kurt down. i'm not hating i promise i'm actually confused bc i've never understood this ship.

Hi anon.

First of all, I don't think you necessarily need to think that two people would be good together/have a healthy relationship in order to ship them together. You just need to think there's an interesting story there.

Canonically, I think they could have been a really interesting midgame (not endgame, and maybe not even officially together, but at least Sebastian showing an interest in Kurt) if some things had been different, but really I'm fine with them not being canon.

Now, onto my personal opinions and thoughts as to why I ship Kurtbastian.

I just really like Sebastian. Yes I know he's an ass. He's a "villain" in the story so he's supposed to be. But I just find his character really interesting to explore. I know a lot of people don't like him, and that's fine.

I love Kurt and Sebastian's canon interactions. Every single time they're in a scene together I just love it. Obviously they aren't being friendly, but that's not the point. I just think they had really good chemistry and I would have loved to see more of them.

Enemies to lovers. I mean, I feel like I don't need to explain this one? It's a pretty classic trope and imagining how they could go from what they are in the show to being together is really interesting to me.

Fanon Sebastian. Sebastian isn't a main character, so he really isn't all that fleshed out, but in fandom we can do that, which I really enjoy. Giving him backstory that explains some of his behaviours and how he approached situations, changing some of the events that canonically happened, all that jazz.

I'm sure there are more reasons that I'm forgetting at the moment. I just have a lot of fun thinking, reading, and writing about all the things that could have been with these two characters

I'm not sure if you've seen this ask I got about Blaine, but I think it's sort of similar. In that case it was the opposite, I think Blaine is ultimately a good person but I just find it interesting to explore that what if of it all if he weren't. Similarly with Sebastian, it's not that I think he's a great person canonically, it's that I like to explore the what if.
