Yes, Scientology is an evil cult that ruins people’s lives, yes, he spent a lifetime as a con-man and pathological liar, but I feel this should be said: L. Ron Hubbard was not just a good writer, but a great writer, even in the context of the Golden Age, which had no shortage of them, and he was a popular one as well, regularly topping reader polls in Unknown and Astounding.

His contemporaries, like Asimov and L. Sprague de Camp, were in awe of him (at least until things started to get weird with Dianetics). He was the first major writer of scifi to prioritize characterization over a science fiction idea, to write stories that dealt with neurosis and everyman protagonists over adventure stories where an engineer solves a problem, and because of that, his 1930s-40s work has aged so much better than nearly everyone else from that time. 

His best work, in my opinion, was not his scifi but his fantasy/horror, published mainly in John W. Campbell’s Unknown, a magazine he created for horror and fantasy (the two were, really, one genre until the 1960s, like twins conjoined at birth, there was scifi and then there was everything else, witch’s brews and dragons). They include Slaves of Sleep, which starts with a millionaire in modern times who was cursed by an Ifrit inside an artifact he finds, so that every time he goes to sleep, he wakes up in an Arabian Nights realm ruled by an evil genie queen, and whenever he wakes up, he vanishes from that world back into ours, and it’s unclear which is the dream and which is reality. This was a major theme of Heinlein’s work, the blurring between reality and fantasy in a story to the point where it was unclear which is which. He wrote two other fantasy novels with a similar theme: Typewriter in the Sky, which starts as a traditional pirate adventure story, but then there is a sound of a typewriter clacking in the sky, and then everything in the story is rearranged. 

The most fascinating work of Hubbard’s fantasy/horror, and the one with the best insight into his psyche, is Fear, a psychological thriller where a man is visited by demons and ghouls after mocking black magic, and it’s not clear if he’s hallucinating them or if he is going insane, and both possibilities are equally horrifying. There’s no Soldier of the Mist (or Gene Wolfe in general) without Fear. The reason this story is the most fascinating insight into Hubbard as a man is because I actually suspect that L. Ron Hubbard, who wrote about the blurring between fantasy and reality, and had a tendency to write nervous, unheroic, nebbish main characters, may not have been a complete scammer. I think he was the kind of scammer that believed his own bullshit and got high on his own supply, a pusher and user simultaneously. This reminds me of stories Scientology insiders tell where he would have auditing session after auditing session when he felt tormented, something it’s hard to imagine a completely cynical fraudster would do.

This is completely random but the way J.K. Rowlings views and political associations have effected the perception of her work remind me a lot of how L. Ron Hubbard is now best known for founding the church of scientology, which has completely overshadowed the fact that he was at one time a very prominent pulp fiction writer.

I mean, given it's commercial success I doubt Harry Potter will be overshadowed so easily, but hot damn if Rowling ain't working for it.

The reason for this declaration is the consistent disaster visited upon her "allies" by the United States government and the efforts of that government since 1955, stepped up since 1963, to seize Scientology in the United States rather than forbid or stop it and the role played by the United States in inspiring the Victorian State attacks in Australia. Scientology technology is no longer offered to the United States government in any effort to assist her in political ends. Our participation extends only to our willingness to process U.S. officials as individuals unconnected with their political aims, if as individuals they are not debarred by other existing policies relating to treating the insane or our Ethics system.

No sétimo episódio (Glorificação do Escolhido) do primeiro ano do seriado Strange Angel (criado por Mark Heyman, baseado no livro Strange Angel: The Otherworldly Life of Rocket Scientist John Whiteside Parsons, de George Pendle), as frustrações de Jack Parsons (Jack Reynor) o levam a uma sessão de emergência com uma alta sacerdotisa da Thelema. Agora obcecado em "manifestar sua vontade", ele se ajoelha na frente dela enquanto ela corta a palma da mão e mistura seu sangue com substâncias estranhas em pó e vinho.

Depois que ele toma um gole, experimenta uma sequência alucinatória, criada em CGI, obviamente, que de uma parte externa do sistema solar, passa pelo sol, pela Terra, até culminar na lua, tudo sincronizado lindamente aos sons dos gemidos extáticos da alta sacerdotisa. A visão final que desperta Jack de seu devaneio de magia sexual é a de um astronauta plantando uma bandeira com a suástica nazista na lua!

Mas o detalhe que mais me foi revelador, é que o solo da lua é composto por centenas de cadáveres humanos, representando certamente as vítimas do vindouro Holocausto Nazista.

Ocorreu-me então algo que talvez os realizadores da série ("Magos Negros" de Hollywood, entre eles Ridley Scott, que foi o produtor executivo) quiseram subliminarmente esclarecer ou sugerir ao público: que não seria por acaso que o solo da lua fosse parecido com um "pó fino" que lembra o de cadáveres cremados.

Se as missões à lua não passaram de uma fraude perpetrada pela NASA, esta, que foi praticamente fundada e consolidada por cientistas nazistas capturados, anistiados e remanejados aos Estados Unidos pelo Projeto Paper Clip logo depois da rendição da Alemanha, estando entre eles o próprio Wernher Magnus Maximilian von Braun (1912-1977), engenheiro alemão e figura de proa no desenvolvimento do foguete V-2 na Alemanha Nazista e do foguete Saturno que pôs o homem na lua, podendo ser considerado o "pai" das Missões Apollo, por um toque de sutileza e ironia macabras e em homenagem aos próprios nazis (aliás, a sigla NASA não passa de uma corruptela de NAZI), poderia ter inventado que o solo ficaria sendo parecido com o pó de cadáveres incinerados.

Foi o que me veio imediatamente à mente assim que vi essas cenas macabras dessa excelente série. Pode ser tudo mera especulação conspiratória minha, mas que é muito tentador fazer associação, isso é.

Jack Parsons teve essa alucinação pouco depois de ter se encontrado com o professor Filip Mesulam (Rade Serbedzija), que depois de assistir aos filmes de Jack documentando seus testes com foguetes, em um momento de vulnerabilidade compartilha uma anedota pessoal com Jack sobre sua juventude e como lhe foi recusado uma cadeira na universidade na Europa porque havia "muitos professores judeus no conselho". Depois de ser o crítico mais duro de Jack, ele finalmente simpatiza com Jack e compartilha algumas equações matemáticas com ele que teoricamente confirmam os esforços de Jack com combustíveis sólidos.

Em uma cena posterior, Mesulam recebe um pacote com o selo nazista, presumivelmente de sua família na Europa. A embalagem revela duas velas com um bilhete escondido escrito em hebraico. À medida que as velas queimam, as joias começam a derreter da cera. Embora nunca nos digam o que a carta diz, a reação de Mesulam é suficiente para sugerir que seus entes queridos estão agora dentro ou a caminho de um campo de concentração.

Jack teve vários prenúncios da corrida espacial, pelo que advoga que “Ir à lua não é apenas uma inevitabilidade científica, é uma necessidade estratégica. Esqueça a Europa. Lá em cima está o futuro. E a primeira nação a colocar sua bandeira em sua superfície será a maior superpotência que o mundo já viu. Agora você quer que essa bandeira tenha a suástica ou estrelas e listras?"

De acordo com a linha do tempo do seriado, a premonição de Jack ocorre 30 anos antes de os Estados Unidos colocarem o primeiro homem na lua a vencer a corrida espacial e reivindicar seu título como superpotência global (usando foguetes desenvolvidos a partir dos primeiros protótipos de Jack).

Nunca o ocultismo e o lado oculto da ciência, da física espacial e da própria NASA foram tão expostos e de maneira tão escancarada por uma série televisiva, que talvez por isso mesmo acabou prematuramente encerrada em seu segundo ano em 2019, quando se esperava ver ainda o desenrolar da amizade de Jack Parsons com figuras como Aleister Crowley e L. Ron Hubbard, o fundador da Cientologia. Para saber mais, o negócio é ler o livro de Pendle, disponível apenas em inglês.

Quase todo mundo ainda pensa que há uma cisão ou distinção entre a magia e a ciência, quando ambos sempre andaram juntas e de mãos dadas.
