Along with its focus on "communications," this issue introduced columns covering the Atari 2600 and 5200 game consoles. The Atari 2600 VCS column led off with a comment that the impending "plug-in expansion module" to add a keyboard would eliminate the distinction between game console and computer, and concluded that "Unless those ten million VCS owners find a better video game system, with a library as extensive as the Atari 2600 VCS, it may be around in the year 2600."

Midnight Gaming: Long Live Eggbug

So last night I played Atari 50th anniversary collection, checked socials later to find.... cohost will shut down by the end of the year... aww..

So Atari is a company thats been around for a long while in the gaming industry, all the way back in the 70's with pong and asteroids, leading to the atari 2600 or vcs as it was called and finally leading to thier last console, the atari jaguar which flopped hard. It was a console that was advertised as a true 64 bit console even though it was really just 2 custom 32 bit processors, making it difficult to make games that run well, in the same decade that has the playstation and the nintendo 64. Yeah, "do the math".

Never really got to experience much of Atari when they were a contender in the scene, heck I wasn't even a year old when the Jaguar was launched so it wasn't really a part of gaming that I had a hands on experience with but I have heard of them. In my general interest in all things gaming in my youth, Atari was brought up sometimes in some gaming mags and online media, AVGN is probably for many people how they heard about Atari as he covered some games on the 2600, even did an episode on the failed 5200 and the Jaguar consoles.

So Digital Eclipse (not to be confused with digital extremes, the warframe folks) has done a 50th anniversary collection that has various games from atari's history, including some unreleased games. Naturally since these games can be easily emulated, a collection of old games wouldnt mean much but theres more to this than just that. You also get a bunch supplemental material such as artwork, behind the scenes documents and videos of interviews with several employees and key figures in atari's history, talking about various things. Cliffy B is there too for some reason.

For me its damn fascinating to follow along a timeline of events, looking at various media and playing some games, getting a feel on Atari's journey over the years. You do learn a few things about the company and how it ran at the time and uhhh.. it certanly looks a bit familiar. Developers having to work overtime, upper management ignoring concerns from thier employees, games being marketed beyond what could actually be delivered leading to consumer backlash, employees losing their jobs in mass. Yeah those problems are still around nowadays huh. 50 years later and nobody has really learnt anything, still making the same mistakes that one time led to the most infamous market crashes in history. Funny thing tho, while the games market did indeed crash in 83, leading to several businesses going bankrupt, for the average 2600 player it was just an odd time in which new 2600 games werent made. Because the 2600 had such a massive install base, eventually new 2600 games got made again, even during the time when the Sega Master System and the Nintendo Entertainment System were leading the console scene. To quote one Garry Kitchen "No one told consumers that there had been a crash. No one went to their house and said "You don't like video games anymore"".

Digital Eclipse also did some other games in the documentary style, the art of karateka and llamasoft. I wouldn't mind checking those out as I feel a documentary that covers a particular subject sounds fascinating to put the lenses of an interactive game, though I suppose it does veer a bit close to "edutainment" territory.

So now with that done, lets move onto the.... news. Cohost is announced to be closing down at the end of year with it converting to a read only format in October. I genuinly enjoyed my time on cohost even if it was short. From looking for alternatives to Tumblr, I stumbled onto it and found a chill sort of site that I felt comfortable browsing, chatting with peeps and sharing posts. It was a site that had an independent vibe that was unique and humble compared to some of its contemporaries. Tumblr weared the mask of being queer friendly despite nuking the odd trans blog every now and then, twitter is a cesspit run by that nepobaby bastard, discord seems to have issues with power tripping mods and creeps. A lot of social media seems to either be.full of techbro crypto ai weirdos or algorithmic data-harvesting software or both! But cohost had the vision of a place that didnt had user-unfriendly practices, instead of just making a site that demands engagement from the user for the sake of profit, the team made the site comfortable to browse and post on, letting people build up communities to hang out and chill in. Sadly that ambition wasnt sustainable due to the issues with both work and finance and in the end, it'll all be shut down.

I'll still be posting Midnight Gaming on Cohost until October as well as on tumblr until I find another site to host this series. Maybe I'll try that dreamwidth place I heard about, maybe i'll actually make a neocities site. We'll see what the future holds.

Captain N: The Game Master (A better brand ambassador than Nintendo cereal)

One cannot understate the popularity of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the late 80s. Unlike the previous “king” (the Atari 2600; yes, the 5200 was released 3 years before the NES, but it didn’t have the traction the 2600 did), the processor was powerful enough to play games that looked exactly like they do in the arcades.

And what games they were! Aside from the arcade ports, the NES had games that would be the start of several franchises that are still releasing new games to this day!

In fact, the NES was so popular they had their own fan magazine (Nintendo Power) that had an advice column headed by an entity known only as “Captain Nintendo (later “Captain N”)

Eventually Captain N got a comic within the magazine, which the led to Nintendo contracting DIC Animation to make a television series.

And what a series it was! In addition to the main cast (more on them in a bit), nearly EVERY franchise on the NES made an appearance at one point or another, except one…

Kevin is rechristened “Captain N” (good thing he already had a letterman jacket with an N on it) and is the Chosen One, destined to save the realm. Assisting Captain N in his quest are…

Princess Lana, the de facto ruler of Video Land after her father’s disappearance

Simon Belmont (the main character from the original Castlevania), who is a pompous ass, has a massive crush on Lana, and believes he’s the Hero of the Story. He’s mainly used for comic relief, but mainly through his interactions with the other heroes (he’s obviously not incompetent; Nintendo’s trying to sell his video game after all!)

Kid Icarus (from the video game of the same name), who is a crack archer and can obviously fly, though he has issues with his height; he’s the shortest of the heroes besides…

…Mega Man (from the game of the same name), who has a variety of devices and attachments.

But what’s a hero without villains, and have they got the who’s who for a mastermind…

Mother Brain from Metroid (for some reason, the show doesn’t have the game’s hero Samas Aran) Unfortunately, she has a “Who’s that?!” for henchmen.

The Eggplant Wizard (from Kid Icarus) and King Hippo (from Mike Tyson’s Punch Out), who are the incompetent comic relief on the villain side.

Fortunately, she does have some competence in the form of Dr. Wily (from Mega Man) Unfortunately, he doesn’t show up that often.

The plots are run-of-the-mill. Mother Brain comes up with a plan to take over Video Land (or ay least one of the realms within) and it’s up to Captain N and his allies to stop her (usually aided inadvertently by Hippo and Eggplant’s bumbling) And somewhere along the way, Simon awkwardly tries to hook up with Lana despite the fact that she’s clearly not interested.

For the analysis project, I originally planned on exploring how love is depicted visually in film. After beginning to explore how I would complete this analysis, it became clear that this topic is not only something that would be extremely difficult to complete a project about, but I also completely lost my passion for the subject. I no longer had any drive to complete the project using this prompt. For the last week, I have tried to find any direction that I felt I could make a quality analysis over, and that I would find a natural curiosity to explore. My search led me to many places, but ultimately, I knew I wanted to explore depictions of fashion. So, for my project, I have finally decided to explore how sexualization is depicted in men vs. women in fashion editorials. My final driving question is this - 

How do fashion editorials sexualize men and women differently through pose, gaze, and styling? 

Other questions include - 

Does contemporary fashion move toward more equal, ethical, and diverse depictions of sexualization, or are traditional gender and sex norms continuing to thrive?

Are depictions of sexualization only for the heteronormative gaze or is there is there a gaze targeted towards homosexual individuals also?

Are editorials that focus on LGBTQ+ fashion more or less likely to depict sexualization in a dangerous way?

What visual strategies do companies use to eroticize the human body, and how do these reinforce traditional gender stereotypes?

The question that I answered is what visual strategies do companies use to eroticize the human body, and how do these reinforce traditional gender stereotypes? After looking at many pictures depicting male and female models in different publications, some things became clear regarding the difference in their depictions. No matter how they are posed or shown specifically, men more often than not appear in a power position, their clothes, and overall visual appearance is supposed to convey a sense of power. When shown nude, the male figure is supposed to show a sense of musculature not in terms of beauty but strength, power, and dominance. Conversely, the female figure is usually shown in a much more submissive and passive state. Female nudity is significantly more common, and as opposed to men who are shown nude because of strength and athleticism, women are shown nude almost exclusively for “beauty” purposes. Women depicted nude, or almost nude, are almost entirely shown this way to sexualize them. Sometimes, women are shown extremely revealing, and the ad has no relevance to nudity, like in perfume ads.

This Gucci fragrance ad is one of the images that I chose to analyze. The woman in the ad is shown in an extremely submissive position, with her eyes closed, pressed against the man, facing away from the camera, and no clothes on. Conversely, the man is shown in the dominant position in the ad. He is facing forward, looking at the camera, and has a calm and collected expression. This ad is just one example of a reinforcement of the male gaze in the fashion industry. Additionally, when searching for an ad to analyze, this was not even close to one of the most sexualized ones. In fact, this one is relatively tame. This shows that this practice of sexualizing women and reinforcing gender stereotypes is extremely normalized and dangerous to society.

The withdrawal of US foreign aid to South Africa is a “wake-up call” and an opportunity for transformation, according to South African politician and youth activist Khalid Muhammad.

organizers touted the expansion as part of a plan to build a competing multipolar world order that uses Global South countries to challenge and compete against the western-dominated world order.[71] China Daily used the expansion to claim that more developing countries were interested in joining BRICS.[72]

On 24 October 2024, an additional 13 countries, namely Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, were invited to participate as “partner countries”. … On 6 January 2025, Indonesia joined BRICS officially as a full member. The BRICS nations see the USA debt risk and despise USA sanction policies. They clearly want to topple the dominance of the US and its dollar (as do the Europeans, which is part of why they came out with the Euro).

Those in Iran and some of the Arab lands, along with nations such as Brazil, China, and India have discussed plans for the removal of the dominance of the U.S.A. in global trade as well. The former (again current) President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, even claimed that eliminating the U.S. dollar’s reserve currency status was one of the reasons that the BRICS alliance (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) was formed in the first place. The Bible clearly warns against cheapening the money supply and encourages having money hold its value (Proverbs 25:4 Isaiah 1:25, Ezekiel 22:18-22). Debt is also warned against (Habakkuk 2:6-8). Yet policies enacted under the Obama, Trump, and Biden Administrations, following certain other administrations, have ignored these warnings.

Yes, the impact of the USA dollar losing its reserve status would be horrible–and even worse than Donald Trump asserted. And things like 100% tariffs are inflationary.

The BRICS+ nations, which compose nearly half the population of the world, still want to bypass the US dollar.

US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened 100 percent tariffs on BRICS nations if they replace the dollar in international trade.

However, Brazil has indicated that it aims to boost the effort during its presidency of BRICS. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s government has said its objective is the “development of means of payment” to facilitate trade between member countries.[i]

Furthermore, some suspect that more countries in BRICS+ may destroy the ‘petrodollar’ system that supports the dollar.[ii]

The USA dollar will ultimately crash and be worthless. That “pride” of American power will be broken (cf. Leviticus 26:19).

One day the US dollar will be toppled–but that will not fully happen in 2025. But let me add that the Bible teaches that a coming European power will accumulate gold too (cf. Daniel 11:38,43; see also The Plain Truth About Gold in Prophecy. How Should a Christian View Gold?).

Based upon several biblical prophecies, I have long written that the Asians and Europeans will cooperate, for a time, and eliminate the USA and its Anglo-Saxon-Celtic descended allies. They will divide their lands among them per Daniel 11:39, and many of the survivors will be made slaves (for more details check out the article Will the Anglo-Saxon Nations be Divided and Have People Taken as Slaves?).

It should be added that part of the purpose of the Euro was to bypass the USA dollar for international trade. And, that has happened completely within the Eurozone block in the EU.

Steps towards pushing away the Anglo-American dominance of the world for the past couple of centuries is happening.

Donald Trump has made statements and endorsed policies that are impacting the current world order–many of which will end up harmful to the USA.

Although BRICS will not dominate the world economically like the coming European Beast power will, the BRICS nations and their actions will have major impacts on the world.

BRICS Push Aside USA Dollar

The BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) have as one of their founding goals, to eliminate the need to use USA dollars in cross-border trade. Six additional nations have been invited to join BRICS in 2024, and India reports that six more are also being looked at. The BRICS nations have already began to drop the USA dollar for some cross-border trading with Russia and China indicating that they had almost done so completely in late 2023. What will happen to the economy and value of the USA dollar if more and more nations stop using it as a primary reserve and trading currency? What about hyperinflation? Tecno Spark Slim: تصميمٌ ثوريٌّ في عالم الهواتف الذكية

It has become apparent very recently that the American government is afraid of this. Take the TikTok ban, for example. In decades past, Americans had little to no knowledge about how our government was funding wars around the world. Although we might’ve known it was happening, it was hard for the average American to see exactly what hospitals our tax dollars were blowing up. Today, however, through mainstream social media, the most widespread being TikTok, we can see entire cities in the Middle East flattened by American bombs hours after it happens. The government never wanted us to see this. This is proven by their swift movement to ban TikTok shortly after public opposition to the funding of the Israeli genocide machine hit new highs. The American government is well aware that unless they can control or ban social media apps that promote global communication, the people will realize what the government is doing and oppose it. If we can see where our government is going wrong around the world, and examples of governments that don’t have this problem, citizens can begin hoping for a restructured government for themselves.
