GX Finalized-Subs!114 (WIP): Screaming into Place

Getting some work going to prep everything for finalizing my subs for GX 113 and 114, and as part of that, I thought I'd try to take a crack at an error that happens here which first turns up in 113's preview for 114, and then wasn't addressed in-episode, subsequently being kept by the dub too.

So, as Judai orders Neos to attack Professor Satou's Attack-Mode Scab Scarknight, Satou activates his Scab Scream Trap Card, which reduces the Battle Damage there to zero before letting Satou send Scarknight to his Cemetery/GY to destroy Neos and summon Crying Scarknight through it. The way it plays out, Satou declares the activation, tells Judai that he won't lose to him, and the card here glows as we fade into Scab Scarknight before it starts to glow and chip away, its pieces flying towards Neos and making him go boom.

But given that, I thought it an error because it doesn't really make sense for Scarknight to be the card glowing, since the effect Satou described isn't coming from it--and throughout the series, shots like this are used as a card's effect comes into play, typically as a Magic or Trap Card gets activated on the field. (And since it's in Attack Mode, Scarknight's card wouldn't be on the field with it [it'd be horizontally under it if it was in Defense Mode].)

So, I thought I'd apply some AfterEffects skills (and a Light Rays tutorial) to try and fix it, giving me what I have here after messing around for a few days (albeit very briefly each day bc work). First, I made a proxy for Scab Scream in Photoshop, then CC-Power-Pinned it into place in AE with some color correction and light blurring. After that, I tried to see if any YouTube creators made AE tutorials on lighting up a card like the original shot, to no avail; most of them were around setting and then flipping cards up in 3D, which while useful wasn't quite the goal, lol. So, I found one on the CC Light Rays effect and was able to play around with it enough to get something that I liked in replicating the original glow here decently.

To account for the fade into Scarknight, I took this into Sony Vegas, where I faded it into about 12-14 frames of Scarknight post-fade that I reused (the original shot actually loops it some too--the dub, meanwhile, hilariously faded into a still shot of Scarknight because of how they dubified the card, and you can tell because his aura suddenly jumpstarts). I then played it a few times (or 20) with the audio from the episode to make sure I felt it natural with the SFX and all, lol.

But overall, hopefully that looks good! Not as 1:1 as I'd like, and if anyone has dabbled in AE for things like this, it would be nice to make it a bit more similar (I would've liked a way to make a few points on the art light up rather than just the total center, for example [and it did make sense to center it on Scarknight's body in the Scream art], or try to recreate the glowing lines around the card more [which I couldn't really keep due to the fade to Scarknight]). I did toy with the idea of masking out the original light-up spots for use with a new solid-color layer to redo them some, or masking Scarknight out from Scab Scream's art and making a light-up glowing effect from that, but wasn't really feeling how those were coming out. But that said, I think this'll work nicely enough--though yeah, open to improvements on the off-chance anyone else has dabbled with making cards glow like this in AE, lol.

So this was basically my very first edit when I was slowly getting myself back on the YGO hype train. Thought I fixed Val's hair since I tried to match more the YGO style so it doesn't look like that now lmfao xD. I am gonna write a little story under the cut for anyone interested in reading it !!

I don't know how long it might turn out to be so I am just gonna write a little summary of the concept of this image that I made.

Basically this was their official first encounter (other than the very first one but he just saw her for like a mere moment.)

It started when Seto detected on Yugi's duel disk the use of a card that he had destroyed a long time ago , that's right it's the Blue-Eyes White Dragon (There is a different origin behind that but it's still connected to the main plot) . So he went in to see it for himself upon how Yugi will 'stoop so low' to tape up a card and use it against him , but little did he know that someone else was using it. Yugi and Kaiba get into a small argument , Val stood in the middle of the whole argument and she couldn't live with the idea that someone was taking the blame , Kaiba basically claiming Yugi of 'cheating' for using a ripped card , she steps up and speaks up. Of course Kaiba ignores her from the start , but after she shows her own 'evidence' of the card , he quickly shifts his attention to her.

Of course a lot of questions begin to form into Kaiba's head as he is trying to figure out where on earth some random girl would even have her hands on such a powerful card. His prideful and rude attitude however doesn't even flinch when he directs his words towards her. Eventually he challenges her to a duel on the spot and she has no other choice , so she accepts the challenge. Yugi lends her his own duel disk for this short lived battle.

She doesn't win , but she doesn't lose either. Before the duel can get to a certain point Kaiba had to leave urgent because his system had detected a use of a 'God Card' as much as he wanted to claim the Blue-Eyes first , he was after the God Cards prior , so he basically dropped the duel in the middle. Before he leaves however , Kaiba asks her if she is a participant in his tournament which she responds with a 'No.' He didn't waste a moment before he pulled out a duel disk out of the helicopter he had arrived in and threw one at her direction and said the following before he felt "I better see you at the finals , so I can rip that card out of your hands. " It came out more like a mock than an actual praise coming from his mouth since he doubted that she would reach them , but since she had her hands on such a powerful card in her hands he didn't lose hope just yet on the matter , because no matter what he was going to claim that card and destroy it.

Another thing for @lazella! Like my last post, this is based on her TWST x YGO crossover fic, And You Thought Things Were Over. This time, I did the Bracelet Girls from Arc V!

Like Yuto, Yugo, and Yuri, I don't know if they'll be making any appearances in lazella's fic, but I really hope they do. These are just my headcanons, so take them with a grain of salt.

First, Yuzu Hiiragi! I imagine her in Scarabia along with Yuya. She's very thoughtful and smart, has a good head on her shoulders, and despite her hot temper, she has a kind heart and is always looking out for others. She has blue bows to mimic the blue hair clips she always wears. (The game also didn't the right shade of pink for her little hair dangles. I made them lilac to contrast her hair.)

Second, we have Serena (Celina) in Heartslabyul. Now, I know what you're thinking; she's a rebel. Why put her in a place with all those rules? It's two fold. One, the most basic answer is because of her uniform in the anime. It's red, and I just couldn't help myself. Two, she kind of gives off Alice vibes. A girl who lived in a straight and uptight community suddenly thrown into a place where nothing makes sense. I feel like she would question Riddle a lot about the rules and maybe get collared once or twice because of it.

(Her hair bow is white because the game doesn't have a yellow bow option. I think she would have a diamond like in the first picture, but the second was inspired by @wearepopcandies' art of the girls as Queen Cards.)

Next, we have Rin in Ignihyde. Like Yugo, Rin is a mechanic and is very good with machines. She would be the motherly figure that I think the dorm needs, telling them to take breaks, reminding them to take care of themselves, and, probably most importantly, keeping Yugo in check. Idia would learn to fear her since she appears to be everywhere at once and scolds him for his own neglect to his health. Basically, she gives off major Big Sister vibes.

(Again, the game did not have right shade of green for her hair, so I made two, one dark green and one blonde, in order to try and create sort of a visual point of reference for her hair? If that makes sense?)

Finally, we have Ruri Kurosaki, or Lulu Obsidian in the English dub. I put her in Octavinelle with Yuto. Like him, she has a calm disposition and a kind heart. She is also the most graceful of the Bracelet Girls and gives off Kind Big Sister vibes. She's one of the few people that can tell Floyd off without being threatened that he's gonna squeeze her. I couldn't get her hair completely accurate due to the game's limited options.

Edit: Thinking more about it, Ruri might also be a fit for Pomefiore too.

And yes, all the girls have their bracelets. I imagine in this world, the bracelets act like magic pens, letting the girls use magic for a short amount of time. I don't know how magical the bracelets actually are, but considering that they allow the girls to teleport the boys away from each other in order to keep Zarc at bay, I would imagine that the abilities of the bracelets would expand in a world full of magic, and the girls would develop their own magical abilities, like the boys.

Again, take this with a grain of salt since this is not my AU. I know lazella has something amazing planned for the future chapters and I for one cannot wait!

Yeah, I usually try to. I've definitely fallen behind in the last few months, though. I'm sorry. I try to tackle it when I have energy, but it's a rare commodity and I use it to write usually.

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

These are more open endings than specifically sad/tragic endings, but they could end up there because they're open. It's a toss-up between Chilled to my bone and the recent ficlet where Jounouchi was kidnapped by Hirutani.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of them are fairly happy because I tend toward happy endings. But I can't really think of which is the happiest?

8. Do you get hate on fics?

No.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Somehow in the last two years, I morphed into being a majority smut writer. I'm still in the experimental phase, trying to write different kinds of kinks/tropes, but I feel more practiced at it compared to when I started. Overall, my preference is to try and use smut as a way to advance character/relationship development.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Yes. It's maybe not crazy per se, but some of them may feel discordant(?) in their source materials. Like I find it amusing to write crossovers between animes and Western live-action properties.

Dialogue, especially in a way that distinguishes between characters via appropriate voice/cadence is something I generally struggle with. I also tend to be verbose even in dialogue, which means they require a lot of editing.

Unless the point is for the reader to also not understand the dialogue, I prefer to not do that.

In terms of how things went down with the Organisation, I was super, super satisfied.

First of all, talk about ACTION-PACKED? I'm so glad that we got to see Kazuki shooting and actually hitting targets! As he said, he can show up sometimes, lol

Ogino's death being the product of TEAMWORK was very satisfying. Personally, I would say that Kazuki dealt the final blow — but yeah, Rei's kick definitely sealed the deal

The stupid book burning up? Perfection. Ogino appears to be a literary man; he talks about the immortality of words and as @lilyginnyblackv2 mentioned in a post, his gun was inscribed with Jane Austen's last words. I feel that he's a reader. And yet, his sick little collection was not afforded immortality. It's perfect

@bbfeelings said that Rei wouldn't be ready to finish his father, which turned out to be the case — but I think the way it did go down was very, very fitting. We saw that Suwa Shigeki was ensconced in a much smaller and barer office, one that lacked the grandeur of the room where he'd had his last two conversations with Rei. This symbolised how he, and the Organisation, was losing power. It was SO good

Rei finally had the power to retaliate — and he shot Shigeki, thereby taking out Shigeki's 'killing arm' (assuming that Shigeki is right-handed; EDIT: I just realised that Shigeki was holding the gun in his left hand). Rei then proceeded to injure himself. In effect, Rei symbolically ended the Suwa family's ability to kill (I say symbolically because, in my opinion, Rei will always be deadly). Also, his father gets to go on in misery, knowing that he was rejected — the ideal world he presented Rei — was rejected. Having seen the ep, I think it's more satisfying than if he got KO'd

And... yeah. Just the amount of blood was fitting? The AIBOU mention had me super emotional (thanks YGO, lol!)

Rei patching up Kazuki? The lighter serving a purpose? Kazuki freaking out over Rei's arm and then instantly accepting it when Rei got in the car? REI BEING A LIVING WEAPON?

I am sad that Kazuki's yellow car is gone... I hope he gets a new one

anyway. they find out the truth of the ohdo lineage or some shit and yuuga reveals his backstory, from his duel against otes, to getting freaked out by dinois' earmuffs to naming his suit an acronym that spells out OTES for some reason....

and uh the stream died so i had to switch to another soooo

catyuuga ends up with luke, the past ohdos call luke the great king of terror because he resembles him, and tiger's there ig. they arrive the day before and not the day that the shuttle enters the atmosphere tho and uh we don't get to see who's in the ship.

they meet that one big ko girl and yuuhi's alien thing acts up. she goes on abt how the others have decent lives or something idk
